Things Above from Fr. Bilot On Tuesday, February 12, we are hosting a Vocations Day here at the parish. In the morning, the 7th grade boys will convene in the Gathering Space, and the 7th grade girls will go to the Convent. During this time, we all will share stories, answer questions and bring awareness about vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life. Fr. Matt and I will share our stories of the priesthood and how the vocation of priesthood is lived out. Sr. Cecilia, along with Mrs. Jan Pierce, will talk on religious life and how it is lived out in our world today. The same day, in the evening, a group of high school and college guys were invited to attend a dinner with the Archbishop, focusing on the gift of priesthood and helping young men to discern how God may be calling them to serve the Lord. I ask that you please pray for these young people so that they will hear the voice of the Lord's call in a world filled with great distraction. Our Education Commission is focusing on the Vocation of Marriage, along with dating and engagement, with a gathering on Friday evening, February 15, in the Gathering Space. The event entitled, "Warming our Hearts," is an evening for couples to help them strengthen their relationship, have an opportunity to spend time together, and share common values with other Catholic couples. If you are married, engaged or dating, I encourage you to block out Friday evening for a wonderful opportunity to grow closer to the Lord through your relationship. See the bulletin for more details. Our current culture doesn't encourage us to embrace a vocation through the life of the Church. It focuses on a career, opportunities to be together without commitment, and to do what it takes to advance in order to have all the amenities of life, without sacrifice. God designed our life in a particular way so that a call to marriage, priesthood, consecrated life and single life have a purpose and meaning. It is important that we see our lives through the eyes of the Lord and His vision for us. Many feel that if we ask the Lord for direction or follow His lead, we will not be happy or fulfilled. The principle of spiritual discernment reminds us that if we listen to the Lord and respond to His call in our lives, we will indeed have fulfillment and proper purpose. I see so many people "settle" in relationships, careers and life because they made all the moves. Nothing was done with spiritual discernment -- asking the Lord to reveal His great and awesome plan for our lives. We should never settle but always move in a direction that will bring glory to God. By moving toward the Lord in our actions and thoughts, it will make sense as to where we need to be, who we need to be with, and how we need to live our lives. If we trust in the Lord, He will see us through.

Page 33 Page

Thursday is Valentine’s Day! St. Valentine offered his life in love for the Lord. On Thursday perhaps, we can do a random act of charity, especially for someone unexpecting, to show our love for the Lord. Blessings, Fr. Jim

Christ the Fount of Life A few weeks ago, I shared with you the Anima Christi prayer which is one of my personal favorites and the prayer that I chose for my ordination card. On the reverse side of my ordination card, I had a picture commissioned by a young artist named Cecilia Lawrence. When I first reached out to her to work on the artwork for my ordination card, I wanted something that related to the main altar at my home parish, St. Joseph in Lake Orion, MI. My home parish has a beautiful wood carved altar that is based on Psalm 42 (“As the deer longs for running streams, so my soul longs for you, O God”). The altar at St. Joseph’s would be the place where I would say my first Mass and Psalm 42 has always been very important to me. Psalm 42 captures the deep desires of the human heart that can only be fully satisfied by drinking from the stream of God’s life. Here is an image from the main altar:

A new LENTEN SERIES coming to Divine Child Parish Two options for this 5-week series: Monday afternoons and Wednesday evenings The final image, which Cecilia entitled “Christ the Fount of Life” beautifully incorporated all the elements that I was looking for and also included Christ as the eternal high priest. It is through Christ’s priesthood that the channel of divine life is made open to us. I hope that you might find some time this week to contemplate this image and that it might be enriching for your prayer.

Greeters Ministry “Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God” Romans 15:7

Welcome to the new Divine Child Greeters Ministry! 

We are looking for a variety of ages, male, female, singles, couples, or families, those who have been longtime parishioners and those who are relatively new to serve in this important ministry! Our goal is to provide each person who enters and leaves the church the experience of a warm Christ-like welcome and a fond farewell with the invitation to come back and celebrate Mass with us again the next week. Greeters will be scheduled for specific Masses throughout the year, particularly those attended by many new visitors or those with many people returning to the church like Easter, Jubilarian Mass, Mass of Remembrance, Christmas, etc.

Greeters will be able to select the Masses and times at which they will serve.

Greeters will arrive about 30 minutes before Mass and stay for about 15 minutes after Mass.

If you are interested in serving in this new ministry, please contact Jacquie Ferracciolo at divinechildgreetersministry@gmail.com or (734) 765-0774 for more information! I look forward to serving with you!

Assists with Burials SVdP, a short while ago, received a request for assistance on delinquent rent when the client had the sole responsibility to handle the burial of two family members. None of her family members or friends could assist with those burials, so she took it upon herself to do the unthinkable. To “skip” the rent payment. She explained that she had no choice in the matter and showed two recent receipts for the burial. She was in a temporary fix and she was grateful and thankful that SVdP could help her out. Although a rare request, SVdP did not want her kicked out and homeless. SVdP thanks contributors immensely. The above great deed was a result of loyalty from contributors. Just remember, when you sow seeds of kindness, God makes blessings grow! ~ Mindy Delano

2018 Ed Hermann Parent Award This award was established in 1995 as a tribute to Ed Hermann for his dedication to the athletic programs at Divine Child High School. This award is unique because it focuses on parents who are a vital key to the success achieved by our sports programs.

We are pleased to announce Brian Kukla as the 2018 Ed Hermann Parent Award recipient. In their letter nominating Brian, Girl’s Cross Country Coach Jack Benitez, Girl’s Track Coach Gordie McIntosh and Boy’s Cross Country and Track Coach Randy Williams wrote of the many ways he volunteered to help their programs. For six years he has given his time to both the girls and boys running programs. During Track and Field, Brian would help as a finish line judge or timer at home track meets. He would also help set up and break down the tent and other equipment during home competitions. Dual meets last about 2½ hours while invitationals can last 5-6 hours and there was Brian always smiling and providing valuable service. There wasn’t much Brian wouldn’t do during cross country season as he would be available for the teams from mid-August to early November. Brian would help at the Carpenter 5K, transport equipment and sometimes athletes to cross country meets and regional and state competitions. He even took his vacation to help the teams at camp in Lake City, MI. He worked in the kitchen with other parents to prepare three meals a day for a week. Brian and Laura helped coordinate team dinners and would feed the teams at Invitationals, Regional and State meets. For the past three years, Brian has been the Falcon Athletic Club representative for all the running teams. He provided an important link between the coaches and parents and helped sell tickets and put together the baskets for the Hall of Fame and Golf fundraisers. Needless to say, Brian has always been one of the most supportive parents these programs have ever had. Because of his character, faith, enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to assist DCHS Cross Country and Track and Field programs, we believe he is most deserving of this award. Brian is the proud parent of Robert ‘17 and Kristen ‘19.

Prayer To Our Lady of Lourdes O’ Holy Virgin, in the midst of your days of glory, do not forget the sorrows of this earth. Cast a merciful glance upon those who are suffering, struggling against difficulties, with their lips constantly pressed against life’s bitter cup. Have pity on those who love each other and are separated. Have pity on our rebellious hearts. Have pity on our weak faith. Have pity on those we love. Have pity on those who weep, on those who pray, on those who fear. Grant hope and peace to all. Amen.

FOLEY HOSTS 11TH ANNUAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS CHESS TOURNATMENT Smack dab in the middle of the snow storm and the bitter polar vortex, the weather cleared and warmed enough for twelve Catholic Schools from around the archdiocese to attend and participate in the 11th Annual Bishop Foley K of C Chess Tournament. On Saturday, January 26th, 168 first through eighth grade students filled the high school cafeteria and prepared for their five matches of Chess. Thanks to the 35 or so brother Foley Knights, their wives and families who helped out to make the event another great success. Eighty-four Chess boards were set up in the HS APR and prepared for the participants to begin playing their matches. Three separate (5 match) tournaments were running consecutively based on grade. There were 31 kids participating in the Kindergarten through 3rd Grade, 63 kids in the 4th and 5th Grade and a record breaking 74 middle-schoolers in the 6th through 8th Grade tournament. This was the second largest tournament hosted to date. Brother Knight Rich Norwood stepped up as the council’s new software pairing guru and he did a great job with little or no complaints from, parents, coaches or the Senior Tournament Director!

Right: Bernard Desjarlais 4th Place Winner in K-5.

After each match, the players reported their outcome and when everyone was finished, the players were re-paired for the next match. After the fourth match, Foley wives, Foley moms, DC Chess moms all chipped in to help serve the over 200 players, parents and volunteers. It is amazing when people come together to help and work together. St. Clair Shores’ St. Isaac Jogues dominated the K-3 Tournament with 5 players placing in the top 6 spots; they won the team trophy with a total of 17 out of 20 points. The 4th & 5th Grade Tournament was much more evenly divided. Divine Child club members Bernard Desjarlais & Rhett Cicotte took 3rd and 4th Place respectively. Divine Child was able to pull off a team win in this division with 15.5 out of 20 points, beating Plymouth OLGC by one full point. There was no stopping St. Isaac in the 6th-8th Grade Tournament. Their powerhouse players coveted 5 of the top 6 spots and won the team trophy with an outstanding 19 out of 20 points. Thanks to all the club coaches who continue to see the value that Chess brings to kids’ cognitive and analytical development. Bishop Foley offers these kids the opportunity to compete with others outside their Chess Club and play in a safe, friendly and faithful environment. Another one for the books! IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO BE A PART OF NEXT WEEK’S MAJOR DEGREE AND BECOME A FOLEY KNIGHT Become part of the nearly 2 million man brotherhood! There is a Major Degree (1ST, 2ND & 3RD) scheduled for NEXT Sunday, February 17th. If you are a 1st Degree Knight and want to get your 2nd & 3rd Degree, now is the time. Don’t put off talking to a

Knight about joining our order. You can always call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 – or talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council

Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus that would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? A 4th Degree Exemplification is coming up on March 2nd. To get your paperwork in and get more information, contact GK Dominic Raona at 734-604-8204.

Right to Life – LIFESPAN

Luminaries This year’s luminary kit distribution was very successful. We passed out over 2,000 luminaires to around 25 churches and numerous individuals. They were assembled by such wonderful volunteers. These volunteers made it possible for the luminaries to be available for parishes to light the streets of metro Detroit in memory of nearly 61 million lives lost to abortion since the decision of Roe v. Wade in 1973. If you did not participate this year and would like to next year, please call the Wayne County Chapter and sign up for our Luminary Participant List .
