Things Above from Fr. Bilot As we were all making preparations for Christmas, a parishioner we know of who has had major health concerns and other issues needed help this Christmas. Through the generosity of our parishioners, Christmas gifts were purchased for her family. When she came to the Rectory to pick up the gifts, she saw them all nicely wrapped and carefully placed in boxes for delivery. She became overwhelmed and stood there in shock. "These are for me?" In disbelief, she just stood there and started to cry. And she cried. I held her in my arms and just allowed the tears of humility and joy to flood her being. One of our young men from our Operations Department was there to help her put the gifts in her vehicle, stood there in silence witnessing the beauty of the Lord in action. A part of me wished that the family who took the time to purchase the gifts, wrap them and bring them up to the Rectory was there to witness this love in action. Yet, many times, love must be given and not seen. This is just one story of many who were overwhelmed by the love and generosity of our parish community. I want to thank everyone who purchased gifts or donated money to help our families in need this Christmas. We collected over $10,000 in money or gifts to distribute to our own parish and school families in need. In addition, I am grateful for the many gifts that were purchased, so festively decorated, and placed in the Sanctuary to be given to other Catholic parishes in the city of Detroit. Also, the generosity of all of you who brought in food items made our Gathering Space look like a local grocery store! I know the pastors of the other parishes were humbled and grateful to receive these gifts to give to needy families in their parishes as well. Know of my prayers of gratitude for your kindness and thoughtfulness. I believe our actions bring great honor and glory to God. Finally, to all who helped in any way during these holy days, especially with the decorating of the Church, I thank the Lord for your generosity in serving the parish. Without your sacrifice of time and energy, our church would not look so beautiful and elegant, and our liturgies would not have been filled with wonder and awe. The beauty of those who worked together, in the end, helped us to focus our attention on the great gift of the Incarnation- God becoming man! There is so much that I can write about during this time. Just know how thankful I am for your outpouring of love with the cards, goodies, gifts, prayers and help. Your care brings goodness to my life. Thank You! We have a very exciting opportunity occurring this week. Our parish has been honored with hosting the relic of Blessed Father Solanus Casey, which arrives on Thursday, January 10. Please see the schedule in the bulletin for many opportunities to come and venerate the relic of a holy man who ministered right here in Detroit. If you recall, on November 18, 2017, the Beatification Mass for Fr. Solanus Casey was held at

Page 33 Page

Ford Field, Detroit. The Mass was overwhelming and filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit. We are blessed in the Archdiocese to have this precious relic, so please make time to come and pray in its presence. In Thanksgiving for all that God has done for us and continues to do for us, may this New Year bring us even closer to the heart of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Fr. Jim Bilot

They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11

Opening Doors For years, Fr. Solanus Casey, the beloved Capuchin priest, had the simple job of porter at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit. His job was simply to open doors. The porter is simply the one who opens the door. While certainly a mundane and repetitive task, the role of opening doors is closely linked with the mission of Jesus. In the Book of Revelation, Jesus is the one who says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me (Rev. 3:20).” We all have doors in our life that we need opened. On January 11 at 7 PM, here at the parish, we will be hosting the event, Opening Doors: Night of Adoration with Blessed Solanus. Dur ing the event, we will be asking the Lor d, with the help of Blessed Solanus Casey, to open the doors of our hearts to receive God’s love and mercy. It will be a night filled with heartfelt worship of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, priests available for prayer or confession, engaging music and preaching. Please consider inviting friends, co-workers, or loved ones to join you for this event, especially those who are looking for peace, healing and an encounter with God. Fr. Matthew Hood

A Prayer by Blessed Solanus Casey LIFE is to live, and life is to give, and talents are to use for good if you choose. Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger. Do no pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks, then the doing of your work shall be no miracle but you shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself at the richness of life, which has come to you by the grace of God. But everyone needs someone knowing that somewhere someone is thinking of you.

Ministry Fair

No Bystanders: How to live as a

JOYFUL MISSIONARY DISCIPLE! In the last two months, we’ve joined others in the Archdioceses of Detroit to learn about our call to mission: to Unleash the Gospel in our family and community. Every baptized person, according to their gifts and state in life, is essential for this mission to be fulfilled. There can be no bystanders. How do you get started or grow more fully in this mission? One way is to participate in the life of the Church by serving in parish ministry. After each Mass January 18 & 19, we will hold a Divine Child Ministry Fair. Your fellow parishioners, who represent various ministries, will be available to explain their ministry and answer your questions. Some of the ministries include: Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion, Readers, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Sacristans, Fiber Arts Ministry, Ushers, Music Ministry, New Parishioner Welcome Ministry, Knights of Columbus. Begin by asking the Holy Spirit how you are being called to serve. To assist in your discernment, please pray with the readings from this Sunday’s Mass, and consider the reflection below. January 6, 2019 The Epiphany of the Lord Is 60:1-6 / Eph 3:2-3A, 5-6 / Mt 2:1-12 Christmas is a time for sharing gifts, but our secular world has contorted what those gifts ought to represent. We can look at the gifts shared by the magi to help us return to the true intent of gift giving. The first gift presented to Jesus was gold -- a gift that foreshadowed His Kingship! The second gift was incense -- a gift that foreshadowed His Priesthood. The final gift was myrrh, oil used in preparing a body for burial -- a gift that foreshadowed His sacrificial death. While the gifts were quite valuable, monetarily speaking, it was even more special that they were clearly inspired by the Holy Spirit and served the Magi well as they worshipped the newborn Lord. In this light, let us consider the gifts that WE bring to the Lord. How do those gifts represent our sacrifice? Do we believe that those gifts were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and do we allow the gifts to help us worship Jesus Christ? Do we allow our gifts to help us live our missionary discipleship more fully? As we begin a new year, it is important to be purposeful and loving in sharing our gifts with God and with one another. Exodus 90 is a challenging 90-day period of prayer and asceticism, supported by a fraternity of 5-7 likeminded men that will begin this January here at Divine Child. The journey of Exodus 90 is centered around 4 Pillars.

90 DAYS The 90-day benchmark is not an arbitrary number; it is essential for freedom. That’s the period it takes to re-learn the joy and satisfaction of selfmastery and freedom. Most men consider the 90-day period of purification a manly challenge, something that may have been missing in their lives for a long time. In addition, researchers have found that it takes about 90 days – the length of many rehabilitation models, including AA – for the brain to “reset” itself. Interestingly enough, people in recovery have known this saying forever “90 meetings in 90 days” because when the brain is engaged in a habit for 90 days it becomes easier to do. After Exodus 90, what was once difficult and a challenge, becomes a new way of life.

PRAYER Men will adopt the discipline of daily prayer – taking on the story of the Israelites journeying from the slavery of sin into the freedom of the promised land. With a daily passage from the book of Exodus and a corresponding, written meditation, as well as communal prayer with other men from Divine Child. ASCETICISM Learning to deny themselves, Exodus 90 men take up their cross, and learn to offer up cold showers, fasting from all alcohol, sweets, eating between meals, television and movies, televised sports, and more. In emptying themselves of modern comfort, noise and vice, men dispose themselves greatly to the voice and presence of God in their lives.

FRATERNITY Men band together, in groups of four or more, for encouragement and accountability as well as to share difficulties and challenges through the 90 days. Weekly fraternity meetings provide the context for a virtuous brotherhood, serving to foster greater communion and friendship within, and after, the 90 days.

Join the men of Divine Child in persevering through 90 days of prayer for our families, our Church, and for our own relationship with the Lord. Men will be separated into age groups (17+) and will meet once a week in the Divine Child Gathering Space. Materials can be purchased at exodus90.com.

An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15th @ 8 pm in the Divine Child gathering space. If interested in joining, please email: dcmen90@gmail.com Please provide your name, age and phone number.

THANK YOU TO DIVINE CHILD AND COMMUNITY FOR A SUCCESSFUL WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

DCHS Seniors, Sir Knight Erik Norwood and Elena Welker give a presentation on Liberty Freedoms and those veterans who fought to protect them

Last month on Saturday, December 15th cemeteries across the nation took part in the annual Wreaths Across America Service. Fraternal organizations raised money to place wreaths on veterans’ graves in cemeteries around the country. Locally, our Monsignor Schulte Assembly (4th Degree Knights of Columbus) raised enough money to purchase nearly 750 wreaths to be laid on the graves of some of the 10,000 veterans who are buried at St. Hedwig Cemetery. Thanks to the donations from around the Dearborn area the program was viewed as a success. There was a twenty minute ceremony in the garage of St. Hedwig’s that consisted of song, prayer and speeches. Event organizers and MCs Jim Pease and Bob Mincel along with the color corps from Msgr. Schulte Assembly and Honor Guard from the American Legion helped to make the ceremony both solemn and meaningful. Fr. Edmond from St. Hedwig Cemetery blessed the ceremonial wreaths for each of the military branches. Past & current students from Divine Child High School led the National Anthem, helped present the ceremonial wreaths and gave inspiring and heartfelt speeches praising the sacrifice of veterans who fought to protect our liberties and freedoms. After the ceremony, the nearly 100 volunteers that gathered to pay their respects went out to marked gravesites to lay a wreath on a veteran’s grave. The volunteers were asked to state the veteran’s name out loud and thank them for their service as they respectfully laid the wreath on the grave. It was a moving afternoon. Thank you to all who supported this worthwhile effort. Next year Monsignor Schulte Assembly has set a goal for 1,000 wreaths. With your help this should be attainable.

Left: Event Organizers PFN Bob Mincel and D5D Jim Pease open the ceremony. Bottom: DC Alum, Ronnie Norwood, lays a wreath on a veteran’s grave.

Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus that would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? There is a 4th Degree Exemplification coming up on March 2nd. To get your paperwork in and get more information contact GK Dominic Raona – 313-212-1835.

IF YOU ARE NOT YET A FOLEY KNIGHT – WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Knights will be available after all weekend Masses January 19th and 20th for the Parish Ministry Fair. We are looking for a few good Catholic men who want to be a part of our mission. There is a Major Degree (1ST, 2ND & 3RD) scheduled for February 17th. Don’t put off talking to a Knight about joining our order. You can always call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 – or talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council.

Winter: Adult Video/Discussion Program Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues Deacon. Tom of St. Kateri Parish is presenting Bishop Robert Barron’s DVD series The Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues, followed by group discussion. Every other Monday starting January 7 through April 29, (9 total sessions). These 75-minute sessions begin at 7pm at St. Kateri in “St. Martha’s Room.” Entrance is from the well-lighted back parking lot, all on one level with no steps. Bp. Robert Barron provides an engaging DVD presentation concerning the seven deadly sins, those great spiritual blocks that inhibit our flourishing in relationship with God and with one another. Based on Dante’s writings, the seven deadly sins correspond to the seven stories of Dante’s Mt. Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger, sloth, gluttony, avarice, and lust are all presented as patterns of dysfunction within us that lead to unhappiness. However, Bp/ Barron shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns through a conscious process of opposition, which are the “seven lively virtues.” The seven lively virtues offer antidotes to each sin and help set us on the right path to healing and happiness. While there is no fee for participating in these classes, the associated Student Workbook, which cost $15.00, is highly recommended. Please register and send check written out to St. Kateri Parish, 16101 Rotunda Dr. Dearborn, MI 48120, telephone: 313-3363227.
