Things Above from Fr. Bilot I mentioned a few weeks ago that my siblings and I planned a 90th birthday party for my mother, Virginia. Her birthday was Monday, January 21, and we had a party for her on Saturday, January 19. Between family, relatives and friends, we had a large gathering to celebrate the occasion. If you recall, God, in his Divine Wisdom, decided to have our first major snowfall of the season last Saturday. In case you don't know, I love the snow (as I look out the window), but I dislike driving in it. Oh, and the party was held in Clinton Township. (As a side note, this is my plug for autonomous vehicles. Or, if I was independently wealthy, I would have a driver!) But, I digress. Despite the weather, the party went on without a hitch. Most of the people showed up and, of course, I got grief from everyone, asking why I didn't do anything about the weather. You know -- the priest/God connection. I was at a loss as to how to respond, because I felt I was caught off guard by God, too. I just smiled and thanked the guests for venturing out in the terrible weather for my mom! All her living children were present, along with all her grandchildren except one, and even all of her greatgrandchildren were there! My mom had a wonderful time, and the rest of us were excited to see her enjoying her 90th birthday! Happy Birthday, Mom! Catholic Schools Week begins today. We are very blessed to have grades K - 12 at our Catholic schools. It takes an immense amount of work, energy, resources and faithfulness to maintain our beautiful schools and keep them updated for those who work and study in them. I want to thank Sr. Cecilia Bondy and Mrs. Ann Marie Grabarkiewicz for leading the elementary school, and thank you, as well, to Mr. Eric Haley, Mr. J. Michael Courage and Mrs. Jessica Spearman for leading the high school. I am honored and blessed to work with such wonderful, dedicated people. I give thanks to the Lord for their goodness and care for Divine Child Catholic Schools! Both schools have some wonderful events scheduled for the week. Please keep our schools and their missions in your prayers. Last weekend, with the help of the Parish Commissions, we hosted a Ministry Fair. We had over 20 various ministries, all offering opportunities for us to live out our baptismal call by serving God and one another. We do not necessarily have to go away from Divine Child to serve the Lord; there are plenty of opportunities to serve right here in the parish. If you did not have an opportunity to stop by the ministry tables, and you feel the nudge to serve (that's the Holy Spirit, by the way), please

call the Rectory Office. We will refer you to the appropriate ministry coordinator. It takes many hands to ensure that our parish is beautiful, and we serve everyone with dignity! Have a blessed week... Fr. Jim Bilot

Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me Body of Christ, save me Blood of Christ, inebriate me Water from the side of Christ, wash me Passion of Christ, strengthen me O good Jesus, hear me Within your wounds hide me Permit me not to be separated from you From the wicked foe, defend me At the hour of my death call me And bid me come to you That with your saints I may praise you Forever and ever Amen. The prayer that I used on my holy card for my ordination was the “Anima Christi” which is a Latin translation of the first words of the prayer, “Soul of Christ.” I first became familiarized with the prayer when I participated in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which was a thirty-day directed silent retreat. During the Exercises, St. Ignatius encourages the retreatant to pray the Anima Christi during the times of prayer throughout the day. While the prayer was largely attributed to St. Ignatius, he is not the origin of the prayer, which dates to the Middle Ages, but he did popularize the prayer and promote it. The reason that I chose this prayer for my holy card was that it serves as an intimate and beautiful reflection on our relationship with Christ. It is His soul that sanctifies us; His Body that saves us; the water from His wounded side that washes us clean; etc. It is a powerful prayer that can help us to intimately recall how we share fully in Christ. It is also a prayer that is recommended for after receiving the Eucharist. In the context of the Mass, the words take on an even deeper meaning. Fr. Matthew Hood

Some people struggle with a sense of belonging, particularly in church. There seems to be this belief that in order to belong, you have to be front and center and for some people, front and center is a very uncomfortable place to be. Remember this: a disciple is, first and foremost, one who follows. As a missionary disciple, you are a member of a body of people -the baptized Christians of the world. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul reminds us that we don't have to be a "hand" in order to belong to the body... "there are many parts, yet one body." Therefore, it is not possible for the body to disregard one of its members, nor is it possible for one of the members to deny belonging to the body. Instead, we must help one another discover our talents. We must encourage one another and be grateful for one another. "If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy." Catholic Diocese of Wichita

Foley’s Forum Bishop Foley Council 2660 serving Dearborn since 1927

AS A BODY IS ONE THOUGH IT HAS MANY PARTS, AND ALL THE PARTS OF THE BODY, THOUGH MANY, ARE ONE BODY, SO ALSO IS CHRIST. (1 Cor 12:12) Does this sound familiar? This is the beginning of today’s second reading. St. Paul teaches us about the different PARTS of the BODY who work together to make one strong BODY. Each PART has its own function and yet we are all one! The concept of creation and life is pretty amazing in and of itself, when you think about our God creating us in an image and likeness of Himself! The Divine Engineering that went into every cell of our body has a unique purpose, right down to the hairs in our noses that filter the air we breathe! As Knights of Columbus, we work together as many different PARTS for the greater good of the BODY, or in this case the order. In our council we have great leaders who are PARTS who have stepped up to become Directors in our Faith in Action Initiative: Life Director Ronald Broekman, Family Director David Rich, Community Director Frank Paolini and Faith Director Dominic Raona. These roles are an important PART of the BODY of the council. All of our council’s programs stem from these directors and their committees. The directors, along with the officers who conduct the administrative aspects of the council and every man with their wives and families, help with our programs to make one strong BODY that we call Bishop Foley Council 2660. Thank you to all the Foley Knights for your continued support. With the continued growth and success of our Foley Council, we are only one PART of the greater BODY. Foley Council is one of nearly 16,000 councils worldwide. These local units, or PARTS, are made up of Catholic men who we call brothers. Foley Council currently has 171 members up from 146 members this time last year. That is a lot of new PARTS making up the BODY of Foley Council. Foley Council is a PART of District 5, which is a PART of the Michigan Jurisdiction, which is a PART of the BODY of the Worldwide Knights of Columbus. We are ALL brother knights. Here at Divine Child Parish, some parishioners are brother knights from different councils, but we are all PARTS of the same BODY! Sometimes we need to be reminded of the mission we are called to perform as brother knights. Be assured that the Grand Knights of the different councils work closely to build a strong relationship of unity between all of our PARTS so together we can make a strong BODY. As Catholic men of nearly 2 Million Knights of Columbus, we are called to be the PARTS that St. Paul speaks about in Corinthians. We are the PARTS that make up the BODY of Christ. We are the Catholic men called to serve others, to be the first to respond in national disasters, to be friends of people with special needs, to be patriots who love their country, to support men as fathers and husbands, to be the supporter of our priests and to be lovers of Life! At Foley Council, we brothers also have fun doing this.

IF YOU ARE A CATHOLIC MAN WHO IS NOT A KNIGHT, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Become part of the nearly 2 million-man brotherhood! There is a Major Degree (1ST, 2ND & 3RD) scheduled for February 17th. If you are a 1st Degree Knight and want to get your 2nd & 3rd Degree, now is the time. Don’t put off talking to a Knight about joining our order. You can always call our Membership Director Steve Lentz at 313-949-5162 – or talk to any Foley Knight about joining our council. Are you a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus who would like to join the Patriotic 4th Degree? The above article is a perfect lead into the Patriotic Degree. Complete your Knighthood and be a proud American Catholic. A 4th Degree Exemplification is coming up on March 2nd. Sacred Heart Elementary School Supports Chili Cha Cha Recently, a proposal was discussed with Sacred Heart Elementary School Principal, Gary Yee, who has endorsed the support of students and faculty to the Annual Chili Cha Cha. By allowing students a “dress down day,” of which a nominal fee is paid into the fund-raising coffers, students once again, realize the importance of charitable giving an integral part of religious education. Their fund-raising for our event is targeted for St. Valentine’s Day, February 14th. It is with great honor that we announce this important advancement for Chili Cha Cha, which would be split with St. Vincent de Paul and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. This announcement comes shortly before the event, with Principal Yee going “above and beyond” the attempt to make the fund-raising work for our Conference. Further, Principal Yee has offered to make this an annual event each year for the Chili Cha Cha. His dedication to education and compassion for the poor stands as a role model for us all. Principal Yee doesn’t just “talk the talk,” he “walks the walk.” ~ Mindy Delano

Right to Life - LIFESPAN Not Dead Yet Have you heard? In an open letter to medical students, the president of Not Dead Yet, a disability group dedicated to supporting those with severe disabilities and defending them from the current utilitarian ethic in medicine, Diane Coleman wrote, “One day soon, you will be a doctor to a person with a disability. He or she may be young or old, newly disabled or an expert in life with a disability, but they need you. We urge all medical students to recognize and reject ableism, to look behind the public relations images of assisted suicide and consider the dangers to the many elders, ill and disabled people who are not safe from the inevitable dangers of mistake, coercion and abuse that assisted suicide laws entail.” For more info: LIFESPAN 734.422.6230 www.miLIFESPAN.org
