from the head of school Our wonderful school is blessed by the meaningful and personal relationships developed over the years with each one of you—the men and women who sustain our lofty mission in service to young boys in true need. And so let me begin by acknowledging you for every prayer and gift made on our behalf during the past year. Beyond the awareness you have about what we endeavor to do on a daily basis, we are sustained by your commitment to be a support to boys who know what to do with the opportunities you make sure are available to them here. Therefore, this 2013 Annual Report, A School Bound by Values, is in many ways a tribute to what we have accomplished together in the past year and the relationships that continue to bloom even in full view of the on-going work that lies ahead. Take a moment to read about the relationships highlighted in the pages that follow. They will reveal something special about the uniqueness of our work and the quality of achievements and relationships won. Most especially, they will speak of boys whose expanding vision of who they are and what they can do with their God-given talents is made possible at Church Farm School (CFS). Highlights of the year will be mentioned in other places, but I certainly want to appropriately thank here a few organizations and individuals who have helped CFS achieve important goals in the past year. The William B. Dietrich Foundation offered the school a challenge grant to rebuild the organ console and we are grateful to all those who answered the call to meet this goal,

especially the 25th Century Foundation. I am also pleased to report that CFS will remain in partnership with the Institute for Global Ethics, Camden, ME, serving as a featured school program highlighting the success we have had in identifying and living more fully into our core values. Former Board Member, Mr. N. Peter Hamilton’s original gift has now been complemented by the Huston Foundation for the coming year. Lastly, a good number of individuals and corporations have raised the bar as contributors to the Griffin Scholarship Program and made time to spend a day with those boys named as Griffin Scholars. As for the record, our financial position remains sound and we are determined to expand our circle of friends that can help close the gap between income derived mostly from a 5% investment draw and other income, even some modest tuition charges. Our challenge is to house, feed and educate over 190 boys living together under the watchful eyes of a dedicated faculty and staff. Your annual support, and more especially your efforts to introduce us to others who share your sense of duty and responsibility to those in need and the desire to reach them through meaningful programs like ours, will continue to sustain our work and make an important difference to some great boys living in communities where hope and opportunity are scarce. For these and every blessing of friendship and support you offer, thank you. And we look forward to visiting with you either on campus or perhaps somewhere near you in the coming year.

The Reverend Edmund K. Sherrill II

from the chairman of the board Earlier this year our two-year-old granddaughter Addison joined us in a 5k walk for charity. When I proudly displayed the picture that accompanies this letter on Facebook, one of my friends kiddingly replied, “Nice—but next year, she has to carry her own weight!” “Carrying one’s own weight” is shorthand that we all use, and we all know what it means: that each of us has to take responsibility for quite a bit in life—both for ourselves, and for the larger world in which we live. As our children grow they need to move from learning to put away their toys, to learning how to respect (and help) others, and finally, as adults, learning how to care for others, including eventually their own families. Responsibility and its concomitant values—brotherhood, respect, and personal integrity—are taught in many ways. We believe that school—and especially a boarding school like Church Farm—has an important role to play in this effort. From our founding in 1918, Church Farm School has always been about nurturing both intellect and character. Learning responsible behavior, the value of hard work, and respect for others has been accomplished over the years in many ways—through farm work in our early years, to today’s community service programs and ethical leadership programs. Preparing our diverse student body for college is only one of our goals. Preparing our young men to be responsible adults who contribute meaningfully to society and guide their own children in the future is equally important.

The many contributors highlighted in this report are crucial to the achievement of these goals. Without your support, we could not provide the intellectual and moral foundations that will serve our students—and our world—so well in the decades to come. On behalf of the entire Church Farm Community, I thank all of you who have helped our students “carry their own weight.” If you have not yet chosen to support Church Farm School, I ask you to consider joining us in this very noble cause.

Respect Integrity

“Respect is a two-way street,” declares long time teacher and administrator, Rich Lunardi. He adds, “We certainly want CFS students to be respectful young men, but it is also essential that the adults in our community consistently model respectful behavior in our interactions with each other and with our students.” No individual at CFS is more highly respected than Rich Lunardi, who through the past 32 years has done his best to be a positive role model within the school community, both personally and professionally. Fighting serious illness over the last year with humor and determination only strengthened his humanity and didn’t prevent him from, once again, helping the entire senior class achieve placement at competitive colleges and universities. Mr. Lunardi has witnessed profound changes at CFS over the decades, yet believes that, while the School continually evolves, its core mission remains. “Indeed, the Board of Directors was ahead of the curve in integrating the School in the sixties,” he suggests, adding that, in the intervening years, CFS has moved

forward as a serious college preparatory school, which demands a great deal of its students academically and otherwise. Yet, while 21st century technology, modern instructional techniques and creative use of resources are taking CFS to new heights each year, some things remain the same. “We have as many students involved in the chapel program as I can ever remember and we talk about the spiritual dimension of life frequently,” ponders Mr. Lunardi, adding that, “Today, we encourage students and faculty to live into their faith through community service.” Turning back to the topic of respect, as well as other values that shape the culture at CFS, such as integrity and responsibility, Mr. Lunardi believes that, “Given the world in which our students live and the degree to which they are bombarded with negative messages through the media, we can’t do enough to emphasize the importance of these core values. As teachers, we plant seeds in the hope that they’ll take root, grow to maturity and eventually be passed on to future generations.” Rich Lunardi Director of College Counseling

The diversity of the student body is what encouraged Marcus Pereira, as a twelve-year-old entering 7th grade, to choose Church Farm School over other attractive schools proffered by his participation in the Young Scholars program of New Jersey SEEDS, a non-profit that helps highly motivated students obtain excellent educational opportunities. He recognized and valued this diversity on his first visit, when he shadowed a student through a typical day of classes. “At first boarding school is overwhelming,” says Marcus, explaining that the rigorous CFS schedule keeps students from becoming homesick, and the demands of residential living make it imperative that they quickly settle any disagreements with other students. “We must solve problems among ourselves, since we see each other day and night,” he explains. Marcus appreciates life at CFS. He enjoys his classes, especially Dr. Broadrup’s Advanced Placement Chemistry where students

took on “real world” projects this past year. He also valued 9th grade English, since older students continually visited Mr. Stout’s classroom bridging the gap between middle and upper school for the younger boys. Finally, simply being with other students in the dormitories is one of the best parts of student life for Marcus, who looks forward to weekends of good conversation, movies in the cottages and playing pick-up basketball games. Respect is two-fold, Marcus asserts: “At Church Farm School, student to student relationships transcend respect. We all do the same things, have the same understanding of each other, and undergo the same hardships. The result is true camaraderie.” The value of respect is also manifested in student to faculty relationships. “Often,” Marcus concludes, “because we are away from our families, a teacher or a dorm parent becomes a parental figure in a time of need. We respect these adults enough to trust them to help us with our problems.” Marcus Pereira ’14 Student

“With three wonderful sisters, I love it that I have found brothers at CFS, students from many cultures who are enough good friends for a lifetime,” says 10th grader Uche Egonu. A Better Chance, a national program that places students of color in high performing high schools, recommended Uche to CFS. The then 8th grader, who is from California, was thrilled and intrigued by the idea of attending an eastern boarding school and has flourished at CFS. Uche, who has a smile that lights up a room, participates avidly in school activities. “I love Interact Club because we truly make things happen and experiment with social leadership,” he explains adding that DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), an on-campus organization that stresses business and communication skills, has taught him how to navigate the business world as an adult. A Student Ambassador who often gives campus tours, the Community Service program occupies many of his weekends. Church Farm School Board Member Norman Strate and a few of his Lehigh University classmates made it possible for Uche

to attend the Iacocca Institute’s Pennsylvania School for Global Leadership at Lehigh University this summer. This international program, which brings teenagers from all over the world to gain real world business experience, was an incredibly broadening opportunity for him. Easily able to connect with a diverse student body as a result of his CFS background, Uche and the others studied global economics, micro financing and entrepreneurship. After learning how to construct business and marketing plans, they were paired with Lehigh Valley companies in order to apply the classroom concepts to these businesses. They also gleaned the many different aspects of entrepreneurship from daily guest speakers. Uche concludes, “I really feel that brotherhood is the core value of the student body and that we are all deeply connected.” He adds that, “I am grateful to Church Farm School for the opportunity to become a better young man with an interest in helping those around me.” Uche Egonu ’15 Student

Personal relationships with friends and mentors were what Steve Loney enjoyed most when he entered CFS. “Living with 15 brothers was great for an only child,” he says, adding that, “You don’t fully appreciate the importance of these relationships until after graduation.” Only ten when his father died, a fortunate coincidence brought Mr. Loney to the School: His aunt, a paralegal at Dechert Price & Rhoades, told attorney and CFS Board Member Morris Kellett, about her nephew whose situation placed him squarely within the mission of the school. Mr. Kellett encouraged the family to apply, and Mr. Loney entered the 8th grade. Today, having come full circle, he is an attorney practicing with Hogan Lovells’ Litigation Group and Secretary of the CFS Board of Directors. Knowing that his mother worked long hours to afford the School’s modest tuition inspired Mr. Loney to try harder and pursue greater dreams, especially college. Following high school, he attended St. Joseph’s University and worked part time at Dechert—the same

firm that had sent him to CFS. Now married and a parent, he is a graduate of New York University Law School and a former clerk for The Honorable Franklin Van Antwerpen of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. In addition to brotherhood, Steve learned personal responsibility at CFS. “I notice that some are less careful, but I have an inability to act that way, because it wasn’t acceptable to do anything halfway at CFS. These were important years in my life, and the culture of doing things right, coupled with a willingness to ‘put ourselves out there’ and try anything whether it be singing in the choir or creating a yearbook, permeated the School,” he concludes. Today, Mr. Loney and most of his class of 1997 “brothers” stay in touch. And, as a Board Member and now a “big brother,” he especially values the opportunity to have a direct impact on current students’ lives. Steve Loney ’97 Board of Directors

Georgina Bissell, a member of the former Board of Managers and long time friend of Church Farm School, is every inch a great lady and the personification of responsibility for others—especially CFS students. Many years ago, her aunt, Mrs. Irving Warner, brought her to CFS for the first time. Immediately moved by the School’s mission, she began decades of involvement. A graduate of Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut (where another member of the Board of Managers, Brent Roehrs, was a classmate), Mrs. Bissell is active in the Philadelphia and Wilmington arts communities as well as the Philadelphia Flower Show. Once a member of the Board of the Philadelphia Orchestra, she has also been President of the Garden Club of America. “How Church Farm School carried out its work always impressed me deeply,” she explains. “The boys took pride in their appearances (always coats and ties for school and Chapel) and in their responsibilities, which exceeded those of most

teenagers,” she says, explaining that, as a member of the Board of Managers, she was constantly updated on the triumphs and challenges of daily life at CFS. Mrs. Bissell served CFS through years of transformation—from the devolution of farming through the strengthening of the college preparatory program, from the days in which donors received scrapple and sausage to the present, when donors’ gifts are often honored through the Griffin Scholars Program. Through it all, her encouragement and generosity has been felt by many. Having met the two students she sponsored last year, she enjoys knowing their plans and successes. She declares emphatically, “These boys are gentlemen, and this shows in their commitment to responsibly maximizing the opportunities they receive at Church Farm School.” Georgina Bissell Friend

“For me responsibility means holding myself accountable and then striving to improve my decision-making the next time around. Responsibility also ties in the importance of self improvement, that is never truly being satisfied with myself and constantly seeking ways to be the best version of myself. It also means living life honorably—turning boys into honorable men is what Church Farm School does,” says Rock Ward, now a freshman at Swarthmore College. Rock’s journey to Church Farm School is an extraordinary story. Living in a marginal neighborhood and surrounded by drug abuse and violence, he moved with his godmother to Brazil where he had to adapt to a subsistence life in a foreign country. This experience totally changed him. Returning home, he found himself slated to enter a failing high school and contemplating not attending school at all. However, volunteering with a nearby church group, he met CFS student Marco Lorenz who told him about Church Farm School—and Rock immediately applied. While then Admission Director Bart Bronk hesitated accepting a new tenth grader five days before School started, Marco talked

him into giving Rock not only a chance but almost a full scholarship. “Church Farm School saved my life,” says Rock. From a hard scrapple beginning that lacked security in some of the most basic ways while exposing him to some of society’s riskiest temptations, Rock developed into a terrific young man. Pursuing an arduous application process on his own, he was one of 250 recipients (out of 114,000 applicants) for a Coca Cola Foundation Scholarship for college and beyond. As a Philip Evans Scholar at Swarthmore College, he will have an opportunity to study abroad and/or create service projects that interest him anywhere in the world. Rock explains, “I’ve had my fair share of mistakes and the value of responsibility has allowed me to learn from those mistakes. Because of the small, diverse, and tight-knit community CFS is, everyone has to take responsibility for not just themselves but those around them, and even the school itself. This allows for a friendly and inviting atmosphere where young men can build each other up and celebrate everyone’s achievements. All students want the absolute best for themselves, their classmates, and Church Farm School,” he concludes. Rock Ward ’13 Alumnus

“I recognized the community spirit right away,” says Nnamdi Render, a senior who came to CFS from New York City in tenth grade. “You really can’t hide from anyone,” he adds, explaining that, “I knew right away that I had to sit down and complete my school work before anything else.” Nnamdi, who played varsity basketball in 11th grade, loved the team and the friendships it engendered. He relates that his coach and teammates were there for him and encouraged him to improve his school work when his grades dropped and he wasn’t allowed to play for a short time. “They brought me back, because everyone is important on the team,” he says.

Individuals profiled are not the persons pictured.

According to Nnamdi, “Integrity, one of the values students have identified as integral to the CFS culture, filters through the entire community. It begins with Mr. Sherrill, the administrators and teachers and spreads to the student body. While we are encouraged to make our own decisions, dishonesty is never tolerated at CFS,” he declares. Graduation in June 2014 will be bittersweet: “I will miss all the people who helped me get to this point,” he concludes. Nnamdi Render ’14 Student

Miari Roberts, a mom with a full-time teaching job in New York City, knew that her son Nnamdi would flourish in an all-boys boarding school, one with structure, few distractions, and small classes. Having met (previous) CFS Admission Director Bart Bronk at a high school fair, she later remembered that all these things were true of CFS, two hours away in Pennsylvania. Nnamdi applied and was accepted into the 10th grade. This year he will graduate, having enjoyed many athletic successes while overcoming a few academic challenges. Since Ms. Roberts is a special education teacher at an alternative high school (in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn) she was especially aware of the importance of a place like CFS for a vulnerable teenager in a big city. “Nnamdi has learned the importance of

being organized, the value of working hard, and the necessity of completing assignments,” she explains. Ms. Roberts adds that “CFS teachers are caring and guide the students, but they expect them to produce on their own.” For Ms. Roberts, integrity at CFS is evidenced by the School’s expectation that all students “stay true to the School’s college preparatory requirements.” For instance, although her son is on the varsity basketball team, he must keep his grades up in order to remain an active participant. “Even though it’s sometimes a struggle, the boys must do well academically,” she explains praising Nnamdi’s teachers and coaches for upholding the School’s rigorous expectations. Sources of Revenue 2012-2013 from the chairman of the development committee sow verb [soh]: 1. to scatter upon the earth for growth; 2. to introduce into a selected environment; 3. to set something in motion As a lifelong suburbanite who was raised outside Philadelphia, my relationship with farming mostly consisted of drives through scenic Lancaster County and trips to the local farmers’ markets in the summer. Despite my lack of hands-on experience, I have always been fascinated by the agricultural cycle—the amazing annual rhythm of activities related to the growth and harvest of a crop, including sowing, cultivating and harvesting. Tuition and Fees

Did you realize that you have a vital role in a similar cycle that transpires at the Church Farm School year after year? Your generous financial support provides essential “seed” capital that makes it possible for each deserving family to send their son to the school and set in motion the opportunity for nothing less than a life-transforming experience. I hope this report will help you visualize the intentional and personal cultivation process at CFS that provides ideal conditions for each student to grow and thrive through all of life’s seasons. A rigorous and relevant educational experience is foundational, but wise mentoring, nurturing healthy relationships, and building strong character are other essential elements.

from the treasurer For nearly a century, Church Farm School has successfully pursued its founder’s vision: a college preparatory education for disadvantaged young men. We continue to offer that opportunity in a boarding school environment, and this year two-thirds of our students paid tuition, room, and board of less than $7,000 per year. We are blessed to have a substantial endowment, from which we support 70% of our operating costs, while tuition covers only about 16% of our costs. Our goal is to position and sustain the School for the next hundred years, without compromising the mission. Thanks to careful stewardship, our endowment has consistently produced investment returns equal to or better than most benchmarks, even through the difficult times of the past decade. However, the annual draw on the endowment, to support School operations, has averaged close to 6% in recent years. Most institutions consider 5% a prudent maximum draw; some advisors are suggesting 4% as a sustainable target in today’s world.

The Church Farm School Forever Priscilla (left) and Karl Gabosch ’48 met while working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, wed in 1969 in the CFS Chapel of the Atonement, and were soul mates throughout a long and joyous marriage. When Karl died in 2011, a memorial service was held at CFS, with classmate Newt Disney presenting a eulogy. Throughout their marriage, the couple attended alumni picnics and reunions. A proud graduate of the milking squad, Karl gleefully shared cottage life stories. In a contest to stay up the latest, two students would stretch a towel through the hanging sheets that divided their bedrooms; the last one awake would retain the towel and be declared the winner. Worse, the boys determined if their socks needed washing by throwing them against the wall—only those that stuck were dirty enough. Mrs. Gabosch attended Blackburn College in Illinois, which also has a student work requirement, and felt the bond of a shared work ethic throughout the marriage. Their lives included eight delightful years in San Francisco and a return to Philadelphia where they began a long, fulfilling hobby of breeding and showing Rhodesian Ridgebacks, later downsizing to Whippets. She continues to be very involved in the dog world, attending and judging shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic States. Brotherhood was important to Mr. Gabosch who wore his class sweater at his 50th Reunion and framed an attractive CFS burlap potato sack for the School to cherish. And every year, Mr. and Mrs. Gabosch reunited with Church Farm School classmates and friends—Ed Mauer ’47, Bob and Jane Gulick ’47, Stan and Vivian

Hood ’47, Bill and Ellen Farley ’49, and Harold and Ann Kauffman ’46. Mrs. Gabosch strives to continue this tradition as best she can though Mr. Mauer, Mr. Farley and Mr. Kauffman have died. “Because Church Farm School meant a great deal to Karl, it has always meant a lot to me, and we always gave whatever we could afford to the School,” explains Mrs. Gabosch who has remembered CFS in her will. She adds that, “In spite of many changes, I continue to feel good about the School’s mission of service to worthy boys and the transformative powers of a good education.”

The Reverend Dr. Charles W. Shreiner Society The Reverend Dr. Charles Wesley Shreiner Society is formed to recognize those individuals who, with considerable forethought and generosity, have planned for Church Farm School to be in their wills or estate plans. In doing so they are joining Rev. Shreiner whose vision and determination established CFS. They are perpetuating this legacy of changing the trajectory of the lives of hundreds of young men. Current membership includes the following individuals: Mr. Samuel Hanger Mrs. Karl Gabosch (Priscilla) Mrs. Wilbur Hall (Jean) Mr. Fred Nahar Ms. Kinue Perkins Mr. Robert G. Rogers, Jr.

Dr. J. Gordon Schleicher ’62 Mrs. John L. Steigerwalt (Sanna) Mrs. Geoffrey Stengel (Louise) Mr. Lyle Schweitzer ’49 Mr. Christopher H. Washburn Mr. Ira Williams
