ny attempt to translate the true power of music into words is practically doomed to failure. Music is not only one of the most surprising and mysterious phenomena in the entire universe, at least what we know of it, it also has the power to touch all of our emotional and physical depths, because, naturally, it is linked to the foundations of human existence. From pure sensation to the intuition of beauty, from pleasure to pain, from love and passion to mystical ecstasy and death - all the things that are fundamental, all the things that, for the human spirit, are most profoundly significant, can only be experienced, felt... and hardly spoken. “The rest is always silence. After silence, what comes closest to expressing the inexpressible is music,” wrote Aldous Huxley, in the essay The Rest Is Silence.”When the inexpressible had to be expressed, Shakespeare dropped his pen and appealed to music. What if music also failed? Well, there was always silence to resort to.

Forever, always and everywhere, the rest is silence.”

Perhaps because we feel music with our whole being, body and soul, it is impossible to consider it as just a sound. Like light, it seems to be both a particle and a wave, a container, a shape, a space to discover who we are and what we crave - a language for our essence, a narrative pillar of our identity. When I was asked to talk about the song of my life, for the article that brings together the songs of the life of each person in our team, I felt unable to. Almost to the point of preferring not to have enthusiastically approved the idea, at the editorial meeting*. The impossibility of a single song and not of an extensive soundtrack as diverse as the emotions and memories that a life is made of made me feel that there were not enough pages for it. And there is not. The feeling of somewhat an injustice in choosing a theme or album, to the detriment of many others, made me return to the nervousness with which I chose the first vinyl in my father’s collection so that, for the first time, I could handle his precious record player. I was 5 or 6 years old and he thought I was already worthy of his confidence, after a brief lesson on the immense fragility of the arm, the needle and, above all, that of the records themselves. I still didn’t know how to read and my musical culture was limited to Rua Sésamo. I chose my first LP for the cover. It was the flower in the hair that caught my eye. With all the solemnity, and fear of scratching, both the record and my father’s vote of confidence, I put the needle on the vinyl, and sat down at the sound of the first rotations until Billie Holiday’s voice aroused my senses and a rapture that I didn’t know before, with a “Don’t know why there’s no sun up in the

sky ...”. Stormy Weather was my first foray into the world of jazz and blues, which led me to explore and listen repeatedly, or compulsively, to the rest of my father’s blues collection. Summertime, by Ella Fitzgerald, Ella and Louis albums, Nina Simone, Chet Baker... everything I felt, continued to make sense, even after being able to understand the lyrics. And life was happening, as well as all the inevitable discoveries and new musical additions. From buying my first vinyl single to teenage mixtapes. Almost all musical styles, from classics to avant-garde, many hundreds of songs were the songs of my life, in the moment I lived, and in my memory forever interconnected to sound.

Why can music run through our deepest memories, overwhelm us with pleasure and passion, soothe us in suffering or even save our lives? Music stands out from all art forms. We do not consciously recognize the mathematical basis, repetition, arithmetic in the nature of sound. An entirely universal language, in a cosmic order or divine geometric pattern that is the antithesis of our emotional chaos.

This issue of Nu-BEAT is about the power of sound and music, in a score written in words and images... the soundtrack that will accompany your readings is your choice. The choice can be one or several songs of your life, or simply the sound of silence...

Because the rest is always silence.

Pinocchio-P A VOCALOID producer known mainly for the fast paced and unique lyrics in his songs, including several unique characters in his PVs such as Aimaina and Doushite-Chan. He mainly uses Miku, though he also uses Rin, GUMI, Yukkuri, and MAYU. His most notable song “SLowMoTIoN” has over 15,600,000 views.

Hachioji-P A Vocaloid producer who first started using Miku and also a popular electropop producer and DJ. His most famous songs are Sweet Devil featuring Miku and Killer Lady featuring Gumi. He is an active producer and is well known throughout the community. He also created remixes of other producers songs.

Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku The game that made Vocaloid rise again

roject SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku is a rhythm game developed for iOS and Android. The game is a collaboration between SEGA, Craft Egg, Colorful Palette, and Crypton Future Media. The game was released on September 30, 2020 for iOS and Android devices.

On September 5, 2020, Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! Rehearsal was released, showcasing the rhythm game itself, along with the Virtual Live room, where players can interact with one another.

The demo ended on September 11th, 2020, and has not been playable since then.

Story The game is set in Shibuya, Tokyo. A girl named Hoshino Ichika, walks through the streets and sees an LCD screen displaying Hatsune Miku.

The game was released on September 30, 2020.

Pre-registration was originally set to begin in late April, but it was delayed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at the fifth Project Sekai livestream, it was announced pre-registration will start on July 22. For reaching various preregistration milestones, there would be rewards for everyone who downloaded the game from then on.

Upon returning home, she discovers a song named “Untitled” on her smartphone. Out of curiosity, Ichika plays the song, only to get surrounded by a white light, and arrives at an unknown place.

Miku stands in front of Ichika, welcoming her to Sekai, and inviting her to sing together.

The Taiwanese version of the game was released on September 30, 2021 and the English version of the game will be released on December 7, 2021, under the name “Hatsune Miku COLORFUL STAGE”.

Preview of a 3DMV

Project SEKAI‘s gameplay consists of tapping notes as they slide toward the bottom to the rhythm of a chosen song; players have to tap, slide and flick to match new free-form rhythm notes, and special yellow notes that are worth more points towards your score. Color Palette wanted to create a game everyone could play, regardless of skill.

The overall gameplay is similar to Sega’s Persona Dancing (Atlus), Chunithm and Bandai Namco’s The Idolmaster series, the players are given 1,000 health points to clear a song, and one can adjust song speed and difficulty to their liking. In lieu of a energy system that is prevalent in most free-toplay games, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage utilizes Live Boosts that increases rewards for completing a song, and players can continue playing even when they run out of boosts.

Players can switch the version before start

The game will feature multiple VOCALOID songs.

Players can switch between the original versions and Project SEKAI versions. Virtual singers will perform the originals songs. The original characters joined by a virtual singer will sing Project SEKAI’s versions.

Some songs have 3DPV or 2DPV, but players can switch to a 2D background if they want. Not every song will have a 3DPV or 2DPV. This is because there’s a huge variety of VOCALOID songs and not every song can be accompanied by dancers. 3DPV are saved for more fast-paced songs.

Project SEKAI includes two types of lives, and that includes #Solo Live and #Multi Live. You will need to use cards from any character in VIRTUAL SINGER, Leo/need, MORE MORE JUMP!, Vivid BAD SQUAD, Wonderlands x Showtime and Nightcord at 25:00.

In Solo Live, you get to choose any song you would like to play and choose the vocal for the song of your choice, whether if it’s the VIRTUAL SINGER version, Sekai version or Another Vocal version. There are 3 notes available in game: flick notes, tap notes and hold notes.

In Multi Live, there are two rooms available: Free Live (any one can join) and Veteran Live (only those who have BP over 15000 can join). For Veteran Live, you can get more shards than Free Live. You can also make your own private rooms to invite your friends to play with you. You can unlock the room to public if you don’t want the room to be public. The gameplay is the same as Solo Live except all players in the game gets to choose a song and a song will be chosen on random. You can not replay or pause in anytime you want in Multi Live.

There are 5 levels of difficulty: • EASY (For Beginners) • NORMAL (For Beginners/Intermediate Level Players) • HARD (For Intermediate Level Players) • EXPERT (For Advanced-level Players) • MASTER (For Super Advanced-level Players) To unlock the Master difficulty on a song, you need to beat the Expert difficulty with less than 7 GOOD Judgements.

There are a variety of costumes that the characters will be able to wear. Some have color variations.

One way to gain costumes is to buy them in the costume’s shop.

Conversation between characters

Players gain experience points (EXP) by clearing songs and listening to overworld conversations between characters. Such talks are fully voiced with 2.5D movement via Live2D technology, and their conversations are depicted in a visual novelstyle presentation that is prepared for each group, including the Virtual Singers such as Miku. Further dialogues are added over time through events. EXP also improves a unit’s rank, which unlocks additional chapters in group stories.

Gacha System Cards, which use a star ranking system to determine rarity (four stars being the rarest), are acquired via the gacha system, a luck-based mechanic in which players spend the in-game currency Crystals with the hope of winning their desired cards. Although Project Sekai is a free-to-play game, players can spend real-life money to acquire more crystals.

Virtual Live

The game also features Virtual Lives, a mode where you can go to a virtual concert, similar to augmented reality or a Vocaloid live concert, where players can interact with one another.

You can see players all around the world and your favorite group performing. Encourage them with your penlight and items. First, when the live hasn’t started yet, you’re in a room with other players waiting for it starts. You can talk with them by using the chat or sending emotes. You have also a shop where you can buy with your virtual coins accessories and set for your skin, penlights, and actions (move). You can use your penlight and your actions in the live only, and you have to put your skin in the room before going into the live.

When 10 minutes are left before the live starts, you can go to the live room and wait. The live will start at the hour displayed on the ticket in the virtual room menu. You can change the color of your penlights do actions with your penlights, and send items. You can do emotes here too. When the live has finished, you can leave.

HATSUNE MIKU

The most iconic Vocaloid of all time

atsune Miku (初音ミク), codenamed CV01, is a virtual Japanese pop star who works using the music software, Vocaloid. Vocaloid is an advanced voice synthesizer software. Musicians can input melodies and lyrics and the program, like a virtual signer, will perform it to produce new songs. Hatsune Miku is one the digital voices musicians can use, and to promote her, Crypton Future Media gave Hatsune Miku a profile and personality.

Crypton had the idea to release Miku as “an android diva in the near-future world where songs are lost. The name was chosen by combining hatsu (初, “first”), ne (音, “sound”), and Miku (未來, a personal name that shares its spelling with the word for “future”).

It thus means “the first sound from the future.” Her name was based on her concept of that when a sound is first spoken.

She was the first Japanese VOCALOID to be both developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc. She was initially released in August 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine and was the first member of the Character Vocal Series.

She was the seventh VOCALOID overall, as well as the second VOCALOID2 vocal released to be released for the engine. Her voice is provided by the Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita.

Although there are other Vocaloids, Hatsune Miku is perhaps the most well-known. She has a distinctive look; she’s an anime-style cartoon character with long teal hair pulled back in two ponytails. She’s performed real-life 3D concerts to audiences worldwide, has hit the top of Japanese album charts, collaborated with and opened for other artists including Lady Gaga, and appeared on David Letterman.

Part of the reason that Hatsune Miku is so popular is that she was created to be collaborative. The original illustrations of her are licensed under Creative Commons, and there’s a large community dedicated to creating and sharing songs for her. So far, Crypton Future Media boasts that over 100,000 songs have been produced using her vocal software.

There have since been numerous installments, such as additional voice libraries dubbed ‘Append’, as well as an upgrade for the VOCALOID3 engine, which contained an English vocal release. She received a VOCALOID4 update to her Japanese and English voicebanks in August 2016, as well as a Mandarin Chinese voicebank in September 2017.

On August 31, 2019, Miku received her first voicebank outside of VOCALOID, that being Piapro Studio with her NT release. While Crypton is focusing on their own program, they are still in collaboration with YAMAHA and will continue to sell VOCALOID products in parallel to the Piapro Studio editions.

VIRTUAL SINGER is a group consisting of all Piapro Characters. Hatsune Miku and her friends exist in the real world as Virtual Singers and live in the Sekai. They sing songs from creators all over the world. They appear inside Sekai of the groups in familiar and unfamiliar forms and help young people discover their true feelings.

Miku and her friends are virtual singers whom producers in our world can use to sing and express the songs that they create. Because anyone, anywhere can listen to the songs that they sing in any form of media, they have become very much known and loved by all. Miku and her friends exists in many different forms in each of the different “sekai” worlds, each one answering the wishes of the who want to turn their feelings into songs. The “sekai” are where the true feelings of the creators take on a physical form, and it’s there that the virtual singers help them realize their these feelings and sing together with them.

“Four childhood friends overcome thier differences to form a band.”

Leo/need is an all-girl band formed by a group of childhood friends who have learned to overcome their differences. Their Sekai is “Starry Sky”, consisting of a classroom bathed in the afterglow of the sunset. They are supported by Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka, who take on the form of band musicians. Their image color is Midnight Blue, and they represent memories.

The members of Leo/need were once childhood friends. However, a certain incident occurred during middle school, as the result their relationship became strained.

One day Hoshino Ichika discovers a song named “Untitled” on her phone. Upon playing it, she is transported to Sekai. There she meets Hatsune Miku who welcomes her to Sekai and invites her to sing together.

A school campus bathed in the afterglow of the setting sun. Miku and Luka wait for the four girls in one of its classrooms, and once they meet, they work together to help them discover their true feelings.

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION

MORE MORE JUMP! is an idol unit formed by one girl who dreams of becoming an idol and three girls who have quit being idols. Their Sekai is “Glitter Stage”, consisting of a performance stage illuminated by countless glow sticks. They are supported by Hatsune Miku and Kagamine Rin, who take on the form of idols. Their image color is Bright Green, and they represent hope.

Hanasato Minori is a big fan of Kiritani Haruka from the idol group ASRUN, she has always dreamed of becoming an idol. Three other members, Kiritani Haruka, Momoi Airi and Hinomori Shizuku were idols, but quit for various reasons.

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION Vivid BAD SQUAD is a unit of street musicians. They were originally two separate dance crews before their merger: Vivids and Bad Dogs. Their Sekai is “My Hometown”, consisting of an alleyway with walls covered in graffiti and concert posters. They are supported by Hatsune Miku, who takes on the form of a street dancer, alongside Meiko, who takes on the form of café staff, and Kagamine Len, who takes on the form of a DJ. Their image color is Vivid Red, and they represent passion.

Azusawa Kohane one day stumbles upon a jam session with Shiraishi An and her fellow musicians.

Captivated by their music, Kohane decides to become a street musician as well.

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION

Wonderlands x Showtime is an eccentric musical theater troupe formed to “put a smile on people’s faces and make the world happy”. Their Sekai is “Smileful Theme Park”, consisting of a theme park filled with fantastical encounters like singing flowers and walking stuffed animals. They are supported by Hatsune Miku, who takes on the form of a troupe performer, and Kaito, who takes on the form of a troupe actor. Their image color is Pop Yellow, and they represent happiness.

Tenma Tsukasa was hired to work part-time at a theme park, but the Phoenix Wonderland Stage he was assigned to draws no customers. Then he met Ootori Emu who wants to restore the stage to its former glory.

CHARACTER INTRODUCTION

Nightcord at 25:00 is an underground music circle.

Their Sekai is “Empty View”, consisting of an empty room with nothing in it except for a few dim rays of light and distorted screens. The only singer to accompany them at game launch is Hatsune Miku, who is mysterious in her personality as well as gothic appearance, though this changes later on.

Their image color is Dark Purple, and they represent trauma. Nightcord refers to the online chat platform the group use.

The circle was created by Yoisaki Kanade. She recruited all the other members. The group communicates with each other over a voice chat tool named ‘Nightcord’. They were unaware of each other’s real names or appearances, until one day...

DECO*27: Hello Nu-BEAT readers! I am DECO*27, a Vocaloid producer from Japan.

When did you start composing music with Vocaloid? What inspired you to become a Vocaloid producer?

DECO*27: I started composing with Vocaloid since around 2007 or 2008, after getting inspired by kz’s song, “Packaged”.

Have you tried recording songs with other Vocaloid characters except Hatsune Miku?

Who is your favorite Vocaloid character and why?

DECO*27: I did make some songs with another character named GUMI, for example, “Mosaic Roll” and “Yowamushi Mont Blanc”. But my favorite character has to be Hatsune Miku. She is the first Vocaloid character I got to know, so I have a special feeling for her more than any other characters. And most importantly, I love her voice so much.

Lastly, may we ask for a message to overseas fans and our readers please?

DECO*27: After reading this interview, I hope those of you who haven’t heard about Vocaloid could start listening to some of the songs! Believe me, a fascinating world is awaiting you. And if the world you are going to enjoy includes my music, I’ll be super happy!

To start with, can you introduce yourself to our readers?

NayutalieN: Hello Nu-BEAT readers! I am NayutalieN, a Vocaloid producer from Japan.

Your first upload on Nico Nico Douga was in July 2015, but did you use Nico Nico even before that?

NayutalieN: I’d been watching Nico Nico not only before Miku started being popular, but since about right after it was founded.

Did anything unexpected happen in your three years of activity?

NayutalieN: To be honest, I didn’t expect this many people to listen to my songs. I received requests to compose songs from other, I didn’t expect that I’d compose songs for others. So it was fun, to not only produce the songs I had already planned, but also songs which go along with the requests of others.

Speaking of which, it was surprising to see you writing that you can’t play any instruments in your album’s liner notes.

NayutalieN: I lived in a small house, so that also helped to make it difficult to have any chances to play instruments. Many people were surprised by that. Recently I finally got an environment that would allow me to practice playing instruments, but I end up doing what I’m used to anyway, clicking away on my PC and creating songs with my mouse.

NayutalieN A producer who makes mostly space-themed songs. Many of his songs have been included in the Weekly VOCALOID Ranking.

His most popular work is “Alien Alien”, sung by Hatsune Miku.

IXima is the character designer of Project SEKAI and illustrator for VOCALOID3 KAITO V3, MEIKO V3, Megurine Luka V4X, Kagamine Rin & Len V4X, and Hatsune Miku V3, V4X, and NT. In addition to these, she also illustrated the reference sheets for the V3, V4X, and NT designs as well.

Miku collaboration. Some of her other illustrations include the cover art for the “Fire Flower” novel as well as its additional illustration, as well as additional artwork for the song Snowman, KAITO’s “Diamond Dust” and “V3” modules, Kagamine Len’s “Ice Fog”, MEIKO’s “V3” module, Hatsune Miku’s Fans consider her as the “next KEI.” She drew her “V3” module, and Megurine Luka’s “V4X” module renditions of the other Crypton VOCALOIDs in for Project Mirai and Project DIVA, the cover art for an illustration book, as well as the cover art for the Elegant Record, Glorious Blue, Lodestar, and Miku Flick/02.
