The Requiem Mass is a musical form deeply rooted in the Roman Catholic liturgical tradition, originally written to accompany the Mass for the Dead. The word “Requiem” comes from the Latin phrase “Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,” meaning “Grant them eternal rest, O Lord.” Over the centuries, this sacred text has inspired composers to create profound musical settings that embody prayer, mourning, and the longing for eternal peace. Though its origins are religious, the Requiem has evolved into a universal expression of remembrance and compassion that transcends boundaries of faith and culture. Among the most celebrated settings are those by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Gabriel Fauré, and Johannes Brahms—each offering a distinct musical reflection on life, death, and the promise of peace.
The fact that Mozart passed away before finishing one of his best-known works, Requiem Mass (Missa pro defunctis), is possibly the main reason for the myths and rumors surrounding the commission of the piece. The romanticization of Mozart being commissioned by an “unknown messenger” in the Hollywood film Amadeus (1984) has also played a significant role in spreading the myth to the public.
Requiem in D minor, K. 626 was, in fact, commissioned in the summer of 1791 by Count Franz von Walsegg (1763–1827), an amateur musician, under a contract requiring Mozart to keep the commission confidential, as Walsegg likely planned to claim the work as his own. The work was intended to premiere at the memorial service for Walsegg’s wife, Countess Anna von Walsegg, who died on February 14, 1791, at the age of 20.
Mozart, however, was busy with his operatic commissions for La clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte, both scheduled to premiere in September, and postponed work on the Requiem until late November, when he began to succumb to his illness. By December 5, the day of his death, he had completed the Introit in full score and had written the vocal parts, continuo, and sporadic instrumental passages for the Kyrie , the Sequence (the first 8 measures of the Lacrymosa), and the Offertory. The Requiem was therefore left unfinished.
Constanze Mozart, his surviving wife with two children, enlisted the help of his students—Joseph Eybler (1765–1846), who completed only the orchestration of most of the Sequence, and Franz Xaver Süssmayr (1766–1803), who completed the rest of the work. To this day, several different versions of the Requiem have been produced based on Mozart’s sketches—either as new completions or revisions of Süssmayr’s version. However, Süssmayr’s version, which has remained the most widely known for centuries, is used in tonight’s concert.
An early performance of Mozart’s fragment of the Requiem took place on December 10, 1791, at his own memorial service organized by Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an Austrian nobleman with a Dutch origin and an avid patron of the arts. Then, on January 2, 1793, the work was premiered in its entirety in a benefit concert for Constanze Mozart and her children, also organized by van Swieten. The concert, however, was held unbeknownst to Count Walsegg, who later conducted what he considered the “premiere” of the work in memory of his wife on December 14, 1793, with his name listed as the composer.
Missa pro defunctis, or Mass for the Dead, developed as a significant part of Christian liturgy in the 4th century and was standardized in the 14th century, with the Sequence being the latest addition to the prescribed text. Mozart and Süssmayr employed the Requiem text in its entirety, without omission or repetition, adhering to the sacred music tradition. The musical structure follows the Baroque cantata mass genre, in which the longer texts of the liturgy are divided into shorter movements. The work is sung by a solo quartet and chorus accompanied by an orchestra in a predominantly colla parte style, which doubles the choral parts. Fugues and complex double fugues—characteristic of Baroque choral music, especially in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach—are also employed.
Though the Requiem is a posthumous collaboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr, and not solely by Mozart, the work has proven to be a masterpiece in music history—admired for its beautiful contrapuntal writing from the Baroque, lush harmonic texture within the clarity of Classical harmony, and profound emotion that reflects the meaning of the text. Tonight, more than two centuries later, the Requiem
remains one of the most moving and enduring works in the choral-orchestral repertoire.
In this concert, the Requiem is presented as a musical homage in reverent remembrance of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother of the Kingdom of Thailand—a tribute to her boundless grace, benevolence, and the everlasting inspiration she has bestowed upon the Thai people.
