Chinese New Year Tradition 2022 By Elle Factoran There is no doubt that the Chinese New Year is one of the most anticipated holidays in the Philippines. In the Chinese Lunar calendar, it marks the start of spring and the beginning of a new year. It is undoubtedly China's biggest festival celebrated throughout the world, especially in nations where there are large numbers of Chinese immigrants, and the Philippines is no exception. Wondering how such a well-known festival became so widespread in the Philippines? Well, This is of course possible, as a result of the Proclamation 295 issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III signed last Nov 24, 2011 and was released later in December the same year. Subsequently, it became possible to celebrate Chinese New Year in the Philippines as a non-working holiday, which allowed both Filipinos and Chinese-Filipinos in the country to celebrate the occasion. As per the late president, "is a manifestation of our solidarity with our Chinese-Filipino brethren who have been part of our lives in many respects as a country and as a people." As a result, Chinese culture in the Philippines has been recognized as being very influential due to Filipinos participating in the celebration using Chinese food, consulting Feng Shui experts for good luck, and reading their Chinese horoscope. There was also an apparent recognition of the Chinese celebration among Filipinos on social networks like Twitter and Facebook, where Filipinos (who may have not a speck of Chinese blood in their body) flooded their news feeds with greetings for their friends, such as "Kung Hei Fat Choi," "Gong Xi Fa Cai," or "Happy Chinese New Year." Hence, here are the top 5 most influential Filipino Chinese New Year traditions that you will encounter when celebrating Chinese New Year in the Philippines!
