On Friday, February 20th, Coronado celebrated a huge victory in sports. Coronado’s Varsity Men’s Basketball team competed against the Liberty High School’s Patriots in an incredible battleforawin.Thegametookplaceat Valley High School at 7:00pm and was the 2026 NIAA 5A Boys Basketball State Championship game. The game was tough, but our Cougars did not give up. Eventually, our Coronado Men’s Basketballteamendedupwinningtheir state championship, scoring 60-55 against the Liberty Patriots. Though this wasoneofthemostimportantvictories madefortheteamthisseason, itwasn’t theonlysuccesstheyhad.

“The season was really good,” says senior Brayden Bauman, "We had over 20wins,anditwasareallyfunseason.”

The team was practically destined for the win, working tirelessly long hours during the season to build up strength as a team and improve so that they have a chance at their state finals. Naturally, they’re long hours and hard work paid off in the end, as this was Coronado’s Varsity Men’s Basketball team's first title ever, making history at the school. While the team did have an incredible season, there were of course many challenges, as all sports teams face.

“The most challenging thing we faced thisyearhasgottobemanagingthe

Thisisatoughsituationthatmanyschoolsports teams face. Managing and balancing games and practices with school is incredibly difficult, yet not only Coronado’s basketball team balances it well, but all of our teams do. While there were challenges and successes throughout the season, winning is not all that matterstotheteam.

“Thebestpartaboutbeingontheteamwasthe people,” Bauman explains. “Just hanging out with them, practicing with, playing with them andthebondsyoucreatewiththem.”

Oneofthebestpartsaboutbeingonanyschool sports team is the friendships and bonds you make along the way. This does also correlate withthesuccessesCoronadohashad, because, inordertomakeastrongteam, theplayers

Coronado’s Varsity Men’s Basketball team had an absolutely incredible season, one of the best in history. They celebrated victory after victory due to their strong, resilient team, and they deserved their first title. Although the 2025-2026 basketball season is now officially over, the team will no doubt inspire many players and continue to be successful in their games in future seasons.

““My coaches and teammates are the most important part. I can’t thank them enough for pushing me hard so I can do well at my competitions.”Rafiesaid.

With regionals behind them, the focus has already shifted to the biggest matches of the season. As they continue to prove they are a team to beat they will have to keep working hard. If regionals showed us anything it simplified that Coronado wrestling will be a teamtowatchatstate.

The Cougar credited all their success to the support behind the scenes. With all the practices that workeduptothistheybelievedthey wouldn’t have pushed as hard as they did. With so much motivation from their coaches and peers have helped with the mentality in wrestling. 4

Men’sVarsityBasketballvs. ArborView

Our very own Men’s Varsity Basketball earned a rather dominant win against Arbor View High School on January 29, 2026 at 6:30pm, defeating them 93-70 on our home court. The high-scoring game showcases Coronado’sconsistenthardwork, dedication, and ability to stay locked in from start to finish. Devaughn Dorrough, a sophomore on varsity, shared a little about what occurs on the court, leaning into what the audience doesn’tseeorhear.

“We usually communicate with each other and pick each other up after mistakes, letting each other know to have a next-play attitude,”Dorroughsaid.

According to him, this mindset, shared by the team, plays a major role in Coronado’s success especially in a fast-paced game when mistakes are inevitable. Instead of slumping into a negative headspace and allowing errors to affect their performance, the team stayed positive and focused, helpingthemmaintaincontrol.

When asked about what he personally believed he could improve on for the next game, Dorrough gave a great answer. As a mere tenth grader, Dorrough is already thinkingaheadabouthowhecangrowasa playerandcontributemoretothesuccessof his team. Developing a stronger leadership position is just one of the goals he strives to accomplishinthenearfuture.

“I want to improve on being more vocal and a leader,” he said. “My coach tells me to initiate contact insteadoflettingtheotherteamdoit.”

This emphasis on taking initiative and having confidence seems to help Coronado set a dominant tone early and keep the pressure up on the opposing team. With an intimidating 93-70 victory, Coronado showed their good team chemistry and determinationyetagain.

Withalotofdeterminationandworkoutregiments, the Women’s Basketball teams tied their laces and put all their work out on the court. This team focuses on strength in numbers as a team, as well as individual learning.

“Every single day in the pre-season and when the season starts we use our own trainers,” Alivia Simon said. “I have no trainer anymore so to stay fit I go for runs, go to the gym, and go to practice with my teammates Our workouts consist of running, pushups, wallsits, etc”

Now, with all the training they have on their off time, their moves and game winning strategies become explosive. One of the biggest parts of this team is that everyonehastheirownstrengthsandtogether, theyall gooutonthecourtandusetheirskillstomakewinning shots.

“ThehighlightofmygamewasthatIwasmakingevery single one of my shots and we were rebounding really well as a team, Simon said. “We ran our plays properly and we played as a team. It was a good win for one of ourlastgames.”

Honorable mention doesn’t even begin to cover Simon as she scores 10 points in the first half, and racks 14 points from four free throws, two layups, and one mid range While the game was good, players can also find an area to improve on, and as they are ending their season, with many being seniors, they want to put their bestfootforwardandbewinners

“I would want to improve on talking on the floor to help therestofmyteamtobemoreawaresinceIaminthe back defending and I can see the rest of the court,” Simon said. “I want the team to have more energy so wecanstartoffaggressively.”

Secta

The Women’s Coronado Flag Football team played at Coronado High School on January 23rdat5:30pmlosingagainstSecta6-12.

Our Coronado Women's Flag football team started off the game very strong with an outstanding performance by pulling Secta’s flag and scoring a touchdown on them. While winning in the first half, they had to stick to being calm and trying to cheer each other on the sideline. But some of the preparation they did before the game made them start to overthinkandtrytobetoooverthetop.

“Whenwepreparedforthisgame, itwaswhat we have been doing wrong in our last game,” junior Jordyn Franklin said. “Our coaches told us what we have been doing good but also what we needed to work on. One of the things they tried and drilled in our head was being calm when we are up and even when we are down or tied, but as the game kept going we keptgettingmorechaoticasateam.”

At halftime the Cougars were winning. Being up, they were ready for the start of the next two quarters to come. They felt confident with howtheyhavebeenplayingandthoughttheir chemistry was really working out on the field as well. After their hard-fought game against Secta, they are now having to prepare for their upcoming game against Arbor View. Last Monday, December 8th, Coronado’s varsity flag football team pulled through, shutting out their opponent with a very impressive 26-0 win. They didn’t even let the other team try. From the opening snap to the ref’s final whistle, Coronado played with confidence, intensity, and sweet chemistry.

The energy on the field was truly electric as the team didn’t waste any time whatsoever taking control and asserting dominance. Strong offensive drives paired with good lockdown defense carried them to success, leaving little room for the opposing team to respond. Every play reflected the hours worth of practice and trust built among teammates.

It’s clear that the team really works well in harmony with their good communication skills and camaraderie. Chemistry is indubitably a necessity for sports, as it can make all the difference between winning and losing.

“Now that all of our non-conference games are over, I think everybody’s used to playing together. And all of our coaches have implemented new plays and defensive strategies, which is really cool to watch it all work out,” said Skupa.

“I think the defense definitely did a great job of communicating, along with our sidelines yelling out to help our defenders,” said junior Devyn Skupa.

Coronado’s Women’s Wrestling Team faced Sierra Vista High School away from home on December 3rd at 5 pm, securing a strong 47-06 victory in their first dual meet.

This win adds to the growing success of Coronado's wrestling program, as the wrestlers continue to display their strength, determination, and technical skill on the mat. Each match demonstrated the teams ability to adapt and fight hard, proving their commitment to excellence at the start of this season. Coronado wrestlers have been recognized for their talent and the hard work that drives their success. Sophomore London Miller shares her thoughts on what she believes makes the team stand out.

Team chemistry and collaboration is a vital part of the success of a team as well. Coronado’s athletes have built a close knit bond that translates into confidence during competition. The encouragement given to each other had helped the players perform to the best of their abilities. Miller explained how this connection has really helped the team.

“Ifeelliketheenergythattheteamgivesout whileI’mwrestlinghelpsalot,”Millersays.“It feels like an energy booster and it helps whenIfeellikeI’mgoingthroughsomething hard.”

“I feel like we’re all really connected and we just have a different kind of energy that most schools don’t,” Miller states.
