KEYWORDS ELEMENTS

I know firsthand what we can accomplish when our community comes together. In my 30 years with Community Human Services, with the help of a caring community, we have grown from 3 to 15 programs located throughout Monterey County to provide a wide variety mental health, substance abuse and homeless services to meet the needs of our community. Community is at the heart of who we are and what we do.

Thankfully, Mark and Adriana Shuman have a “A Heart for Change.” They have approached Community Human Services with the lead gift and inspiration to develop and open a new shelter in Monterey for women and families, based on our success at Casa de Noche Buena. But Community Human Services and the Shuman family can’t do this alone. It will take a community with a “Heart for Change” to come together once again. Please consider joining us in making Shuman HeartHouse a reality by the summer of 2023.
In January of 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, CHS opened its newest program, Casa de Noche Buena in Seaside, the first homeless shelter for single women and families with children on the Monterey Peninsula. On the day we opened, we received calls from 21 families and 31 women – more than triple our capacity! There are currently over 250 people on the waiting list for admission and that number is rising, due in part to COVID-19’s impact on our community.

Anyone can find themselves homeless at any time. Many of our friends and neighbors are one paycheck, one mental health crisis, one injury, or one emergency away from losing their housing. We have been been standing in the gap for many families facing one or more of these crises for the past 50 years.
“We need shelters like Casa de Nocha Buena, because our guests need that stability or place to go. It gives them a chance to go to school or go to work without having to worry about where am I going to sleep tonight? They know they have a safe place. It’s providing this place where our guests can continue to be a part of society and not be outcasted.”
People experiencing homelessness need more than a handout, they need a hand up. It will take all of us having a heart for change to provide the opportunity, support, and resources they need to live happier, healthier lives.
WE HAVE A HEART FOR CHANGE TO DO SOMETHING THAT WILL IMPACT THE IMMEDIATE NEED AND HELP BREAK A POTENTIALLY GENERATIONAL CYCLE.
The statistics about homelessness are not just numbers. Each one represents a person who is doing their best to navigate a complex system. Each one represents someone who isn’t looking for just a handout but a hand up so they can provide for their families, ensure their children get a good education, and secure a safe, affordable place to live.
The last few years of the pandemic have shown how fragile “economic security” can be. We have seen an influx of requests for assistance the need is rising. The number of people experiencing homelessness in Monterey County is rising.
THAT’S WHY WE NEED SHUMAN HEARTHOUSE.
