2021|2022 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

We are so grateful that the fiscal year of 2021-2022 brought the Children’s Home Society more opportunities to serve our community’s children. We continued to adapt our practices and services based on what we have learned since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since early in the pandemic, Idaho has faced a healthcare worker shortage, which affected countless healthcare clinics. Children’s Home Society was no exception. And despite growing economic well-being and positive improvements in family and community factors, Idaho’s children are demonstrating increasing anxiety and depression. In fact, nearly 10% of Idaho’s high school students attempted suicide in 2019 and approximately 12% of Idaho’s children aged 3-17 were diagnosed with anxiety or depression in 2020.

However, there is good news. The National 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was created to connect people of all ages with a trained professional who can help them through a behavioral health crisis and serve as an entry point into the care system. In Idaho, the YES program was expanded, allowing access for 35% more families to connect with our Targeted Care Coordination program. And here at Children’s Home Society/ Warm Springs Counseling Centers, with support from the board, we have adapted to the health care worker shortage by becoming a more competitive place for providers to work, with a renewed priority placed on improved benefits and working conditions.

We are proud to be a safe place and lifeline for our children in crisis at our counseling centers in Boise and Meridian, as well as in various school campuses in the Treasure Valley. We are assessing ways we can expand our services to even more children. We’ve brought back in person trainings for clinicians throughout the valley with our Warm Springs Training Institute. In the coming year, we will be focusing on growing our clinician base and attending to our capital campaign needs. These priorities will ensure that we can help a growing number of children in an important historical space in our beloved community.

We continue to be eternally grateful for the support from all of you - foundations, individuals, corporations, and other supporters. Thank you to the Board of Directors that has helped us adapt to the changing health care landscape. And a very special thanks to the staff and clinicians whose quality professional care helped over 2,748 children and their families last year, regardless of ability to pay.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of us here at Children’s Home Society/ Warm Springs Counseling Centers, thank you!

What last year looked like and looking ahead

COMMUNITY SCHOOL-BASED COUNSELING

Our Community School-Based Counseling program is evolving as we grow our relationships with area schools. Last year, Warm Spring Counseling Center (WSCC) clinicians worked with students on campus at North Junior High, Boise High, Cardinal Academy for parenting teens, and Elevate Academy, a career technical charter school in Caldwell, Idaho. We aim to cultivate new relationships with more schools this year so we can reach more children and be of service to parents who might have trouble getting their child to an appointment.

PEER CONNECTION GROUP

We held virtual and in person peer connection groups for girls, boys, and parents in FY 2021-2022. These groups provided the opportunity for community connection, to strengthen self-esteem and to give participants the tools to express themselves. For FY 2022-2023, the Children’s Home Society (CHS) plans to introduce music, dance and yoga-based groups as well as parent/teen groups. We will also re-introduce our Touchstone Grief Group which was put on pause due to COVID.

WARM SPRINGS TRAINING INSTITUTE (WSTI)

Our training institute is open to all clinicians regardless of where they are employed. WSTI helps clinicians stay current on their credentials while attending local trainings. We are pleased that we were able to return to offering in-person trainings again this year. The trainings included farm-based therapy and trauma-based therapy sessions.

This year will bring more exciting opportunities for WSTI trainings. In September, WSTI offered a self-care therapy training for clinicians, and we plan to offer new specialist trainings in areas such as trauma, play, EMDR and autism throughout the year.

CLINICIAN RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION

CHS successfully researched and implemented a clinician recruitment/retention plan to help address impacts of Idaho’s ongoing healthcare worker shortage. With improvements in salaries and workplace procedures, CHS is now a more competitive employer in the Treasure Valley.

This fiscal year, we will build on this strategy by providing specialist trainings for clinicians to help them better utilize practices that are in line with their interest and skills and encourage longevity at WSCC.

TARGETED CARE COORDINATION (TCC)

Our Targeted Care Coordinator provided treatment and service coordination for over 29 families this fiscal year. TCC is a family-centered, team-based approach that brings youth, families, and informal support together to create the best possible care plan and prioritizes the families’ and youths’ voices and choice for services. With the expansion of the YES program, we anticipate being able to connect a growing number of families to resources related to housing, respite care, occupational therapy, and transportation.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

We publicly announced the 2022-2024 Capital Campaign at this year’s Annual Gala. CHS aims to raise 3.5 million by the end of fiscal year 2023-2024 to help restore and maintain our beautiful historic stone building located at 740 Warm Springs Ave. CHS will be inviting the community to open houses and other events to share the importance of our building and engage in fundraising efforts.

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.”

building community partnerships

The Speedy Foundation has been an instrumental partner with us over the years. Because of their belief in our organization we are able to participate in life- changing events, such as “Finding KIND”, a screening of “My Ascension”, and Connection is the Cure. Just this last spring, we partnered with them to present the IndieFlix film “LIKE”, a documentary that explores the impact of social media on our lives. Look for more events to come from our partnership!

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO SUPPORTED US THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

Warm Springs Care Farm is a not-for-profit located in Boise, Idaho that offers farm-based therapies for children, adolescents, and young adults. Over the last year they have generously donated their beautiful grounds to host our Farm-Based Trainings and Music Therapy Groups. We are grateful for their hospitality and we look forward to partnering with them again soon, as we both work toward our mission of improving the mental health and well-being of children and their families.

We are excited to see how their outreach grows and how we can continue to partner with them this year.

in-kind awards

In September of 2021, we won a SelectHealth Award. A selection committee of representatives from SelectHealth, St. Luke’s Health System, and the community evaluated submissions from more than 140 organizations, and awarded 22 recipients from across the state. As a winner, we received a grant for $3,000, a large branded banner, and an organization video that has been instrumental in telling our story. Stoltz Marketing Group awarded CHS 100 free hours of marketing for FY 2021-2022. It was an honor to be selected. From their generous gift of 100 hours, we walked away with marketing tools that will strengthen our branding, tell our story, and help us grow throughout the years. Stoltz put new life and color in our logo, created impactful videos and built up our social media arsenal. Each one of their team members worked very hard for us and we cannot thank them enough.
