Brief introduction of main Catalan parties:

 Convergence and Union From Wikipedia

Convergence and Union (Catalan: Convergència i Unió, CiU; is a centre-right electoral alliance in Catalonia,Spain. CiU is technically a federation of two constituent parties, the larger Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) and its smaller counterpart, the Democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC). It is currently led by Artur Mas, who is the current President of the Catalan Government. CiU is a Catalan nationalist party. It is usually seen as a moderate nationalist party, both in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain. Depending on the observer it is regarded as either conservative or centrist. Still, liberal leanings may be found in the larger CDC, while Union is a Christian democraticparty. As for its position in the nationalist debate, it is deliberately ambiguous so as to appeal to the broadest spectrum possible, from voters who seek full independence from Spain to those who are generally satisfied with the present self-government status. In general, the CDC tends to be more supportive of Catalan sovereignty, while the UDC is considered closer to traditional Catalan autonomism and more nuanced nationalism. Its leader, Mas, recently declared that he did not support full independence from Spain. In the most recent regional elections, held on 28 November 2010, CiU won by 38.5% of the vote. It gained 14 seats in the Catalan Parliament, which brought them to a total of 62 deputies. While they hold more than twice as many seats as any other party, they are still 6 seats short of a majority in the 135 member body. Although they have stated the determination to rule without a formal coalition, in certain issues they seek external support from other political parties, especially Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and People's Party (PPC).

 Republican Left of Catalonia From Wikipedia The Republican Left of Catalonia (Catalan: Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, ERC; IPA) is a left wingCatalan independentist political party in Spain. It is also the main sponsor of the independence movement from France and Spain in the territories known among Catalan nationalists as Països Catalans. Occitan Republican Left, formed in 2008, acts as the Aranese section. Its current president is Oriol Junqueras and its secretary-general is Marta Rovira.

 Socialists' Party of Catalonia From Wikipedia The Socialists' Party of Catalonia (Catalan: Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya, PSC) is a social-democratic political party in Catalonia, Spain resulting from the merge of two parties PSC Reagrupament led by Josep Pallach i Carolà and PSC Comgres. It is the Catalan referent of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), and its Aranese section is Unity of Aran. The party had also been allied with federalist and republican political platform Citizens for Change (Ciutadans pel Canvi) until the 2010 election.

 People's Party of Catalonia From Wikipedia The People's Party of Catalonia (Catalan: Partit Popular de Catalunya, Spanish: Partido Popular de Cataluña, PPC) is a centreright political party in Catalonia, Spain. It is the Catalan affiliate of the Spanish People's Party.

COVERAGE PLAN NEWSPAPER (THE NEW REPORTER) A. INTRODUCCTION On the occasion of the Catalan elections The New Reporter, will organize two different plans to hedge against the elections, where the first, will be a summary of content prior to election day, consisting of interviews, counts, opinions and previous elections to position the reader against new elections, and that are based on comparative data collected compared to previous elections, proposals and improvements every game and raises the possibilities that lie ahead, according to surveys. While on the other hand, the second cover, will exclusively focused on the analysis of the results and what it will mean to each party, once the results have been revealed. Each of this coverage will have its own cover, different but same theme. Where the first shows a representative image (for example, the people voting) and the second, of course, show a picture of the winning political representative. Each will have a number of pages devoted to these elections, where coverage prior to, will have less information dedicated to be a review of the history of the games. While, the second publication, having known the election results, will roughly double pages, analyzing the whole day, and what they will assume those results. a. SUNDAY – pre-elections day Being the day of elections, where people still are voting, and the results can not be known even in this pre-election edition, contains five main pages, with the cover, dedicated exclusively to review the history of the main candidates, as well as exposing government plans for this new application.

It will include a brief survey of estimates so far obtained of potential finalists, a graph of the results of the previous application, a brief survey of the expectations of citizens, opinion columns and reviews section of readers.

a. PAGE CONTENT ANALYSIS

o COVER: In the pre-election cover of this issue, as it is a story from which not even know the final results, and therefore, the importance of this, for now, his treatment will be like any other news more, only adding to the end of the cover, because as the day of voting, is the most important of the day. Therefore, they choose to put the lead story of the day ("German population, also revealed"), accompanied by a picture of ample size to four columns, followed by his narrative summary. Then, in the bottom-left parties, we find a small ad on the cover. The news of the Catalan elections, has been occupying the central part of the lower-left daily, accompanied by a small picture where you can see the voting citizens, and where the story develops such participation.

o PAGE 1: On this page, we find a review of the main political forces of power that exist in Catalonia (CiU and ERC) and whose order of appearance will be followed by its more likely to be candidates for the government, according to encestas when made, will be discussed briefly his career, and exposed, so that readers

are more present, both offer proposals for Catalonia, whether they are winners in voting. The first news, talk about CiU (Convergence and Union) presenting the main ideas and proposals of his party and the possible settings that would face, as the representative of Catalonia. Will be accompanied by a photograph of the representative leaves the party, Artur Mas. Then a little more than halfway down the page, we find exactly the same internal structure as the one above, but this time, talking about the second power, which would ERC (Republican Left of Catalonia), which also accompany a photo of the main members: Oriol Junqueras, as president, and Marta Rovira as general secretary.

o PAGINA 2: This page is dedicated to the proposals and explications of the secondary parties, which are, PSC (Catalan Social Party); PP (Popular Party); IPV (Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds); C´s (Ciutadans) y CUP (Candidatura d'Unitat Popular). So, this page is divided in five parts, where which one, is for each party explanation. In case of talk about PP, we will include a picture of it, because actually, it is the party which govern in Spain, and at the same time, depending who wins, could means or positive things to Spain or even negative. So the situation between some Catalan parties and the Spanish one, PP, could be hard in term to negotiate or could not. o PAGE 3: This page is going to be divided in two parts: first one, a study as a memory about the last candidature results, with a graphic which includes the situation and the explanation about the possible differences that could happen in some hour, based on the surveys conducted so far, and reminding the alternatives proposed by them.

And the second part is going to be headed by a big picture about the empty Catalan congress, talking about the expectative, and talking deeply what could happen between Spain and Catalonia relations if each one of the parties won.

o PAGES 4 AND 5: Those two pages are only dedicated to the opinion sections. The fourth is just about columns of the NEW REPORTER journalists and some columnist collaborators, talking about their impressions and opinions about those elections in Catalonia. Is going to include about five or seven different columns. At the bottom, a whole advertisement is going to be positioned. While the last page, the fifth, is going to include some selected readers opinions about that question. Will include nine to twelve views of readers. That one, have an advertisement at the right side of the bottom.

o FRONTPAGE: Been today when we know the election results, almost all the mains news are going to be about that issue, so the whole front page of the NEW REPORTER, is about that topic: Catalonian lections results. The structure is simple; we have the election graphic at the top, to the right of the main picture, which will be the picture of the winner. Below of the graphic, we have a simple introduction about the explanation of it, and below the main picture, we begin with the main article, talking about the winners, his political plans, the agreements with the national government, and some details that happened during the Election Day. This is going to be a big article, so at the front page, we just include the introduction of it. Maybe, we could even have an advertisement at the bottom of the front page, very expensive, and very little.

o PAGE 1: The main article is going to be developed in that page, including the whole review about the elections, talking about the winner party, and his points to carry out, the agreements between them and the national party, PP, and what it means to Catalonia and Spain, working each one, and working together. At the bottom, we collect the PP impressions and some commentaries done by PP about that result in Catalonia

o PAGE 2: That second page amplify the first one, including the graphic about the results, comparing with the last elections, and explaining what it could mean to the independence CIU proposal.

At the middle of the page, with a little picture, we talk about mains points about the winner party against the financial crisis in Catalonia, using if were needed, the top of the third page to expose the conclusion.

o PAGE 3: That one is dedicated to the parties’ pact. Not only the Catalonian parties, also, and as the mainly topic, expose the points in which the national party, PP, and the Catalonian winner, are going to be agree or disagree, and analyze what it could means to the Spanish unity and the government process. Will talks about the second and third parties, and his repercutions after this elections, and his situation compared with the last one.

o PAGE 3 BACK: All this page is to advertisements; one bigger, a second one with medium size, and a third at the bottom little and with some text.

o PAGE 4 AND 5: Includes relevant and curious news about these elections, a little scrutiny about the citizens’ expectations after and before elections and also some of the possible secondary parties’ pacts. Just using the fists half of the fifth page.

o PAGES 5 AND 6: Those pages are dedicated to the analysis of the second parties (ERC [Esquerra Republicana de Catalonia]; PSC [Social Catalonia Party]; PP [Popular Party]) situation and results. May include unless tree pictures: one of each party represented. The order of the apparitions in the pages, depends on the votes results of each party, so the NEWS COVERAGE PLANNING 9

second one, will have more space, the third one a little bit, and the last one, just the final part of the page.

o PAGE 6 BACK: All this page is dedicated just to advertisements. Will be one big adv. situated on the middle of the page, occupying almost all the page, and just at the bottom, a little adv. at the left side, and next that, a bigger one.

o PAGE 7: Here, the NEW REPORTER is going to include the editorial page, dedicated to the examination of the results in representation of the entire newspaper ideologist, trying to be correct.

o PAGES 8-9: Pages dedicated to the columns of journalist and usual collaborators.

o PAGE 10: Is a page exclusively dedicated to show public surveys carried out after the results, done in Madrid, Barcelona, and Gerona (as principles political conflict areas) to know the percentage of people who agree with the results, and to know what to expect from this mandate. Depending on the deeply of the study, an advertisement could appeared at the left side of the bottom.

o PAGES 11-12: This is finally dedicated to expose the reader’s opinion about the elections results and the possible arising pacts.
