LA TARASCA: Ayala Family Serves Authentic Recipes, Homemade Tacos By Lydia Denney

With a love for cooking and a dream to open her own restaurant, M a r g a r i t a Ay a l a o p e n e d L a Tarasca in Centralia in 1997. Margarita’s son, Juan Ayala, initially

encouraged her to open her own restaurant and helped her look for a location, eventually buying a building on Main Street. Now, the brightly colored restaurant is known for the authentic, homemade Mexican dishes made from recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Juan has helped Margarita run the restaurant over the past 10 years along with his siblings and other family members. Though Margarita is now retired, she still oversees the restaurant, Juan said. “This is my mom’s passion,” Juan said. “My mom loves making

tortillas, and she gets excited about food. She knows Mexican food really well.” The restaurant’s name comes from what indigenous people from Michoacan are called; the Tarascans. La Tarasca refers to an indigenous female. The food served at La Tarasca is authentic Mexican food, which is why many customers are surprised to be served pickled carrots as an appetizer instead of chips and salsa. Some people have walked out after learning the restaurant doesn’t serve chips and SEE PAGE 5.....................................

We truly stayed authentic.” Juan eventually suggested that they start offering chips and salsa, but Margarita decided against it. If someone travels in Central Mexico away from the tourist spots, they won’t be served chips and salsa, Juan said. “She said, ‘Well I don’t know how to make those, they’re not authentic and I never grew up making those. If we don’t make them with my food, we don’t make them at all,’” Juan said. “That was the best decision she ever made.” La Tarasca has customers who come from all over, especially on the weekends when people from out of town visit, Juan said. Everything Juan knows about food comes from his mother and he said he appreciates that the restaurant is family-oriented. Something that sets La Tarasca apart from other Mexican restaurants are their homemade corn tortillas. When people think of the best way to celebrate the Americanized version of Cinco de Mayo, most people turn to classic tequila. While a quick shot is a popular type of consumption, there are some other unique ways to spice up a tequila drink for the holiday. Market Street Pub in Chehalis spices their tequila up (literally) with a fresh jalapeno margarita.

The margarita is taken to another level with chili salt around the rim of the glass. Owner Tara Bird said like many, she was also originally skeptical of the jalapeno margarita. However, with just the right amount of shaking, the jalapenos make a refreshing drink. “The more you shake it, the spicier it gets,” Bird said. “Three shakes gives you the perfect drink.” McFiler’s in Chehalis also has

The women at the free self-defense class on Saturday, April 13.

Rochester Taekwondo Instructor Offers Free Class for Women By Lydia Denney

LDENNEY@CHRONLINE.COM

As a woman, I have always been told to be careful: don’t walk alone at night, don’t leave your drink unsupervised, lock your doors as soon as you get in the car. When I was a little girl, my mother ingrained in my mind rules like never go anywhere with a stranger and, when I was deemed old enough

to go places on my own, that someone always needs to know where I am going. While I have been fortunate enough to never experience an assault, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in five women will be raped at some point in their lives. I figured it’s never too late to learn how to defend myself. On Saturday, April 13, I attended my first women’s self-defense class at Kim’s Taekwondo in Rochester. The class was presented by 8th degree Grandmaster Cheryl French, who periodically offers free women’s self-defense classes

for the “average woman.” The class was free, but the instructors accepted donations that would be given to the Human Response Network because it is an organization that helps women who experience domestic violence, Grandmaster French said. The other instructors included Master Hull, Master Laurel and Ms. Peggy, who all helped teach the class participants the importance of selfdefense. Grandmaster French has practiced Taekwondo for 35 years and originally gained interest when she took a women’s self-defense class herself. As an 8th degree

black belt, she is the highest she can go in the rankings. She was also the first woman in Portland to ever break three boards with a punch in front of the Great Grand Master in 2017. The class began with a discussion about awareness and tips that we should keep in mind while going about our days, like always park in a well-lit area and to get out of any dangerous situation right away. Grandmaster French said most of the information was common sense and that women’s intuition will always kick in, but she designs the class in a way that accommodates SEE PAGE 9.....................................

all skill levels. We received the list of awareness instructions and a diagram of the best places to hit on someone’s body when defending yourself: the eyes, throat, nose, solar plexus, knee and groin. After our discussion, we paired up to begin learning and practicing defensive moves. The moves we learned covered a variety of scenarios in which we might have to get out of an attack or assault. We lear ned moves for when someone grabs your wrist, shoulder and hair as well as what to do if you are being choked or if someone grabs you from behind.

At the end of the class, participants got to break a plastic board using our elbows. Each of us successfully broke the board, the equivalent to one and a half ribs. Most of the attacks done on women are up close, Grandmaster French said, which is why we used our elbows. Many women who take self-defense classes think they will get hurt while breaking a board, but it’s because they lack confidence, Grandmaster French said. “From the very first class, it gives them confidence,” French said. “When women start, the first thing they always tell me is, ‘I don’t want to break boards…’ But after they’re

first board, they’re hooked.” Grandmaster French said she is also planning to have another free women’s self-defense class in August to prepare young women who are leaving for college. Since taking the class, I have kept in mind the tips and instructions that I learned from Grandmaster French. A few days after taking the class, while I listened to “My Favorite Murder,” host Karen Kilgariff gave her advice for anyone being unwantedly touched or attacked by a man: “The knee goes to the nuts, the fingers go to the eyes and you f***ing go for it, animal style, like they serve at In-N-Out.” Coming from someone who has no Taekwondo or self-defense experience, I would encourage all women to take a self-defense class. Not only do I feel more informed and confident, but I feel Lydia Denney / ldenney@chronline.com empowered knowing ways I can The women’s self-defense instructors. Centralia Resident Creates Social Media App to Connect Cannabis Users, Products, Brands By Lydia Denney

LDENNEY@CHRONLINE.COM

After spending years involved in the cannabis industry, Dan McMahon noticed a need that hadn’t been filled: a platform built for consumers. In 2016, McMahon began creating Budwiz, a free social media, gamified app that allows cannabis users to connect with brands, retailers and friends. As the industry changed, the app was built and rebuilt, but it is now available for both Android and iOS users. “All the other applications out there were all business-focused,” McMahon said. “What I found to be missing here in the industry was that the one stakeholder that wasn’t really represented was the end consumer. So, I built something to actually get their direct feedback, their choices from the bottom-up, instead of having that information trickle down.” Prior to recreational legalization in Washington, McMahon gained experience on the medical side of marijuana as a cultivator. Ironically enough, McMahon voted against

legalizing recreational marijuana because of flaws he saw in the proposal, he said. “I’m probably one of the very few people in the state that actually read the original proposal,” McMahon said. “As someone who is used to reading financial contracts previously, I found a lot of holes in the way that it should be rolled out and I found that a lot of the stipulations that were currently in there and how it was set up were against what I believed the intent of the voters actually was.” McMahon has always considered himself more of an advocate for

the patient and consumer side of cannabis, instead of the business side, he said. As a medical cannabis patient for nearly 10 years, he was looking for a way to get consumers more involved in the industry and help small retailers compete. The tax structure, the approval process and other barriers to entering the industry all work against smaller retailers, but big businesses won’t be able to buy their way to the top with Budwiz, McMahon said. “One of the main premises of the SEE PAGE 11.....................................

TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE

If you’re inspired by the Avengers movies to read more about Thanos, you’ve probably found a bewildering array of hardbacks, trade paperbacks, comics and miniseries, whose online or backcover descriptions don’t indicate what’s good, what’s bad and what’s mind-numbingly redundant. Fear not! Captain Comics comes to the rescue, with a host of recommendations of various Thanos collections:

‘AVENGERS VS. THANOS’

The very first Thanos story, collected here, meandered through “Avengers,” “Daredevil,” “Iron Man” and “Marvel Feature” in 1973-74 before climaxing in the pages of “Captain Marvel.” It served as the blueprint for Thanos stories for literally years. Plot: The mysterious and ruthless Thanos is introduced as being in search of the Cosmic Cube, a device created by A.I. M. that can turn wishes into reality. The Red Skull

had used it (ineffectually) a couple of times, but Thanos has bigger plans: He intends to become God. Needless to say, Captain Marvel and the Avengers take issue with this plan. Some aspects of this story will seem odd to modern readers, like how B-list Iron Man was, and how male Captain Marvel was. Things have changed! But as an introduction to Thanos and his wackadoodle ambitions, the Cosmic Cube story is indispensable reading for any fan of Ol’ Purple-Puss. Rating: Five Infinity Gems (out of six), Also included in this collection is the second Thanos story, which appeared in 1976-77 in “Warlock,” “Avengers Annual,” “Marvel Two-InOne Annual” and, weirdly, “Logan’s Run.” It’s essentially the Cosmic Cube story all over again, but much bigger and more ambitious. And it includes Adam Warlock, a character yet to appear in the movies, but who is vitally important to the Thanos saga in the comics. Wa r l o c k i s a g o l d e n - s k i n n e d

character with vague cosmic powers who, when killed, retreats into a cocoon, only to revive with a new costume and a new set of vague cosmic powers. He is sort of Thanos’ opposite number, a character who appears in most Thanos tales and routinely thwarts the Mad Titan’s plans. Plus, he has the Soul Stone (called a “Gem” in the comics) smack dab in the middle of his

forehead. In addition to the usual mix of Avengers, Spider-Man and Thing of the Fantastic Four also appear, with the former having a couple of standout scenes. (One is a panic attack. Seriously, it makes sense.) Another fine effort, if slightly redundant. Rating: Five Gems.

‘INFINITY GAUNTLET’

This is the big one, the 1990-91 miniseries adapted in “Avengers: Infinity War,” where Thanos gets all the Infinity Gems and wipes out half the universe with a snap of his fingers. Once again there’s a feeling of deja vu — this is Thanos’ third bid for godlike power — but the scale is even larger and the fate of the Avengers is shocking (until the inevitable third-act reversal, of course). This series gives Thanos a different reason to wipe out half of all life than the movie _ to impress his girlfriend, the personification of Death — and includes Mephisto, Marvel’s Satan stand-in, who adds sardonic wit and treachery to the mix. Also: Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer and the cosmic entities of the Marvel Universe do big, cosmic things. Rating: Six Gems.

But wait! “Thanos Wins” isn’t the first time we’ve seen Thanos do that voodoo he do so well. In 2010, Marvel was in some sort of selfloathing spiral, and in a cry for help published a bunch of stories that depicted possible demises for its

main characters. And in one spasm of nihilism, the publisher wiped out everything in the six-issue series “Marvel Universe: The End.” But, weirdly, this one series was actually “in continuity,” as we comic fans say, meaning it “counts.” And guess who wiped out the universe — and then brought it back? Yeah, that purple guy again. But it wasn’t just an exercise in pessimism; the series actually had a point. There comes a time when Thanos is sitting in a white void, having, you know, destroyed everything, as he does. And in that void, he is joined by, um, let’s say a friend — who teaches Thanos the surprising reason for his existence. Yeah, I thought that would get your attention. Five Gems.
