In the heartwarming short documentary, Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World, we are introduced to a remarkable young girl whose spirit and determination defy all expectations. As the holiday season arrives, The Chronicle is proud to spotlight a tradition deeply rooted in African-American culture: Kwanzaa. Celebrated from December 26 to January 1, Kwanzaa is more than just a holiday; it is a time for reflection, unity, and a renewed commitment to community. For our Chronicle readership, Kwanzaa offers an opportunity to embrace shared values, honor heritage, and celebrate the resilience and creativity of Black culture.
The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa Kwanzaa, created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, is centered on the Nguzo Saba, or Seven Principles. Each day of Kwanzaa focuses on one principle, celebrated with the lighting of a candle on the Kinara and a reflection on its meaning. These principles guide families and communities toward collective empowerment and cultural pride:
1. Umoja (Unity): To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves.
3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and solve
our problems collectively.
4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and sustain our own businesses and profit together.
5. Nia (Purpose): To collectively build and develop our community, restoring greatness and pride.
6. Kuumba (Creativity): To always strive to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
7. Imani (Faith): To believe with all our heart in our people, parents, teachers, leaders, and the righteousness of our struggle. Each of these principles speaks to the heart of what The Chronicle strives to celebrate—a thriving, unified, and purposeful community.
Music has always been a cornerstone of African-American culture, serving as both a form of expression
As we celebrate the contributions of Black history during this holiday season, let us reflect on the importance of December 26, a day that not only marks the beginning of Kwanzaa but is also significant in the broader history of African-American resilience and achievement.
26, 1862: The Second Confiscation Act and the Dawn of Freedom
On December 26, 1862, the Second Confiscation Act took effect during the American Civil War. This act, passed earlier in the year, declared that enslaved people in territories under Confederate control were to be freed. While often overshadowed by the Emancipation Proclamation issued just days later,
this legislation was a key moment in the fight for freedom and justice for African Americans. It signified the U.S. government's growing commitment to ending slavery and laid the groundwork for a future defined by emancipation.
December 26 is also notable for the
birth of Carlton Moss in 1901, a pioneering African-American filmmaker, playwright, and educator. Moss used the power of storytelling to address issues of racial injustice and elevate the experiences of Black Americans. His most famous work, "The Negro Soldier," was a groundbreaking film produced during World War II that showcased the contributions of African Americans to the U.S. military. Moss's commitment to empowering Black voices remains an enduring legacy.

On this day in 1966, Dr. Maulana Karenga established Kwanzaa, a holiday designed to honor African heritage, strengthen community bonds, and pro-
and a means of connection. During the holiday season, the powerful sounds of gospel and the soulful rhythms of jazz bring joy, unity, and reflection to celebrations, including Kwanzaa.
Gospel music, deeply rooted in African-American church traditions, is a natural companion to the holiday season. Songs like "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Silent Night," as performed by gospel legends like Mahalia Jackson, elevate the spirit of the season with their powerful messages of hope and faith. Gospel music reflects the principle of Imani (Faith), encouraging listeners to believe in themselves and their communities even in the face of challenges.
mote cultural pride. Rooted in African traditions and history, Kwanzaa continues to inspire generations to reflect on their shared values and aspirations.
As we remember these moments in history, let us take inspiration from the resilience, creativity, and unity demonstrated by those who came before us. Whether through legislative milestones, cultural contributions, or new traditions like Kwanzaa, December 26 reminds us of the importance of honoring our past while building a brighter future. From all of us at The Chronicle, we encourage you to carry the spirit of reflection, celebration, and action into the new year.

her life grappling with a rare form of autism that renders her essentially nonverbal. However, her parents, filled with unwavering belief in their daughter's potential, embarked on a transformative journey to discover the true depth of Makayla's inner world. Directed by Julio Palacio, the film runs for 25 minutes.
Diagnosed with autism and unable to speak, her world began to transform at age 14 when she learned to spell using an ABC Letter Board. This simple yet powerful tool unlocked her ability to communicate her thoughts and emotions, opening the door to remarkable progress in her social and intellectual development.
Her parents, Khari "Needlz" Cain and Manana Cain, have walked this journey alongside Makayla every step of the way. While Khari is a Grammy-winning music producer, known for his work with artists like Drake, Bruno Mars, and Cardi B, he and Manana have faced the everyday realities of raising a non-verbal
child with grace and determination. Together, they have tirelessly sought specialized therapies, clinicians, and resources to ensure that Makayla— and all non-verbal children—have access to tools that unlock their potential. Their joint effort reflects an unwavering commitment to their daughter’s growth and wellbeing.
This shared dedication led to the creation of Makayla’s Voice, a foundation devoted to empowering non-verbal communicators and their families. With a mission to provide safe, supportive spaces and resources, the foundation offers therapeutic programs, grants, and community outreach initiatives. Central to its mission is promoting letter boarding as a transformative tool for communication. Through its Atlanta-based center, the foundation works to improve the lives of children and young adults under 22, helping them connect meaningfully with the world.
Makayla’s remarkable journey captured the attention of award-winning
filmmaker Julio Palacio, who worked closely with her parents to produce this heartfelt documentary. Supported by her siblings, Amani and Nasir, and guided by the unwavering dedication of both her parents, Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World has become a powerful testament to love, resilience, and advocacy. The documentary has already earned top honors at prestigious festivals such as the Atlanta Film Festival, Slamdance Film Festival, and the New York Tribeca Film Festival. It is also on track to contend for an Academy Award nomination in March 2025.
Adding another layer to Makayla’s story is her grandmother, Dr. Maxine Hankins Cain, who offers a deeply personal perspective in her book, When Makayla Smiles. Originally drafted years ago and recently reimagined, the book chronicles Makayla’s transformation from a girl once thought to be intellectually limited to a brilliant advocate for children with autism. Dr. Cain
reflects on the profound emotions Makayla’s smile evokes, inviting readers to share in the joy and hope of her journey.
As Makayla’s story continues to inspire and break barriers, we encourage you to witness her incredible journey firsthand. Watch Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World on Netflix beginning December 11, 2024, and learn more about the foundation’s work at MakaylasVoice.com.
Join us in celebrating this extraordinary family and their shared mission to amplify the voices of those once thought to be silent. Together, Khari and Manana Cain, alongside Makayla, are proving that every voice holds immense power, and with love and determination, even the quietest among us can change the world. Don’t miss this life-changing documentary—Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World promises to uplift, inspire, and leave an indelible mark on your heart.

Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy
gives doctors a non-surgical way to biopsy spots in the lungs. This system takes the CT scan of your lungs and builds a 3D airway map that provides the doctor performing the biopsy turn-byturn directions of your lungs.
Once the catheter used to collect the biopsy arrives at the spot in the lungs, it has a flexible tip that allows doctors to collect multiple biopsies of different areas in the lung, including very small spots (the size of a pea) in hard-to-
reach areas.
McLaren Greater Lansing purchased this almost $700,000 system in August, and the feedback from patients so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
“I had a chest X-ray and CT scan of my lungs, and a spot showed up on my right lung,” said Merialice Jensen, a patient. “My doctor recommended a bronchoscopy with the Ion machine so we could take multiple biopsies.”
To prepare for the biopsy, Jensen had to discontinue all food
the night before and liquid two hours before her procedure. This is because, for an Ion bronchoscopy, patients receive general anesthesia. It’s important to check with your insurance to avoid any unexpected medical bills, dress for comfort, and arrive early with your identification and insurance cards.
In today’s fast-paced world, stress is an inevitable part of life, often creeping into our daily routines and affecting our well-being. However, there are practical strategies that can help mitigate its impact, allowing us to lead more balanced lives. From exploring alternative therapies to engaging in fulfilling hobbies, these methods offer a pathway to improved mental health and emotional resilience. By incorporating these practices, individuals can transform stress from a burden into a manageable aspect of life, fostering a sense of control and peace.
Engaging in hobbies is a powerful way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. Whether it’s painting, gardening, or playing a musical instrument, dedicating time to leisure activities can lower fatigue, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. These activities not only offer a break from daily responsibilities but also foster positive emotions and reduce depression. By prioritizing hobbies, you create a dedicated space for relaxation and enjoyment, which
is crucial for maintaining balance in a hectic lifestyle.
Participating in social physical activities, such as team sports or group fitness classes, can significantly enhance your stress management capabilities. These activities provide a physical outlet for stress relief while fostering a sense of community and belonging. The endorphins released during physical exertion help reduce stress hormones,
promoting a calmer state of mind. By integrating social elements into your exercise routine, you can enjoy both the physical and psychological benefits, making it a powerful strategy for stress management.
Staying hydrated is essential for managing stress and maintaining overall well-being.
Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, and eliminate waste, all vital for opti-
mal health. Dehydration can exacerbate stress by increasing anxiety and irritability, creating a cycle where stress and dehydration feed into each other.
Recognizing signs of dehydration, such as headaches and fatigue, allows you to take proactive steps to maintain adequate fluid levels, supporting cognitive function and emotional stability.
Incorporating safe alternatives into your stress management toolkit can be both effective and enjoyable. Ashwagandha is known for its stress-relieving properties, as it helps regulate cortisol levels and promotes a sense of calm and balance in the body. Essential oils, like those from thyme and coriander, are renowned for their soothing properties and can be used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation. Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated between December 26 and January 1. It is holiday created to honor African American culture, uplifting community and togetherness.
First created as a holiday in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Africana Studies at California State University, it's always been centralized on seven core values, including Umoja (unity), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), and Nia (purpose). As we approach the holidays, this is an incredible time to introduce and expose our children to the deeper mean-
ing and purpose of Kwanzaa. It is empowering to celebrate and be thankful for our Black experience and our commitment to liberation and together in our communities. This is a wonderful opportunity for all children of all backgrounds and ethnicities to come together and understand more about African American culture.
To make educating your child on Kwanzaa simple, here are 5 kid-friendly YouTube channels about Kwanzaa:
This UK-based award-winning, educational program provides inclusive and diverse content, enriching young minds. Marketed from 0-7 years old,
the Kwanzaa episode features a young girl telling all about the holiday and why she enjoys it.
This channel has a main host, Kujo who explains topics to children with fun animations that keep their attention well. In the Kwanzaa episode, Kujo dissects the different parts od the holí day with word definitions, 7 principles, ways for celebrating, and even has some other kid guests stop by. This episode would be great for young schoolaged children.

It is getting cold here in Michigan. Most days, we are only able to stay outside 30 minutes at a time. I have had to reimagine, plan and curate focused activities that will decrease the chaos during this season, in our home. While I still value free play along with time spent cooking in the kitchen together, I realize that a solid, intentional project or activity:
> allows for deeper connection
> builds a team mentality/teamwork amongst child-parent and siblings
> decreases mess after mess
> decreases chaos and dis-regulation
> allows children to feel a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their work
> gives opportunity for child to work through organic, natural adversities in safe spaces
While I don’t know all the statistics, I realize it is fortifying, fun and exciting for them...and for me! It breaks up the
days and allows us to do something special and out of the ordinary block stacking, book reading and coloring. Now, I know many of you will be home on break with your children for a couple of days, or in some instances... weeks (gasp) during the holiday season. Here are some of our most favorite cold weather activities this holiday season.
Yes, that’s correct. Let your kids paint the shower. I purchase our washable paints, paint brushes and ice trays online or at Dollar Tree. Budget friendly and pretty simple, squirt a bit of paint in the ice tray, skipping every other section to minimize paint mixing (because one of my kids does not deal well with paints touching....you guess which one).
After that, we get down to underwear and diapers, climb into the shower and go at it. I believe part of the allure and excitement comes from the feeling of “painting on the walls”. This allows them the freedom to make a huge mural and a big mess, too.
When we have squeezed that phase dry of its excitement, we move onto cleaning the shower together. This builds a sense of teamwork while seeing these duties as fun and engaging. Everyone takes a rag to the walls and floor with dishwashing soap and/or all-purpose cleaning spray (we make a kid friendly one: baking soda, lavender & vinegar).
We don’t quit until it’s all off and white, again. Hello, is that you persistence. I love interweaving activities with building values. It is also a bonus for this mama who (sometimes) needs some extra motivation to scrub the showers. I also enjoy that the craft washes right away. Is it just me or do any other moms feel like they are swimming in their toddler’s artwork? As much as I love to archive special projects, this cuts down on paper waste which the planet perserver in me really appreciates.
I enjoy the three-in-one action of this activity as I usually do it in the afternoons after rest time. It is an art project. It is a fulfillment of the household cleaning responsibilities. It is also bath time. Which makes me feel like we are one step closer to bedtime....(long exhale) IYKYK

This night was different or, perhaps, I was just more aware. I heard whimpering from upstairs. Instead of a baby’s shrieks and squeals piercing the air in our home, my son’s voice was moseying downstairs in a drawn-out call from his crib “maa maa”. At that moment, I realized that his cries of need had changed into calls of want. I was not exactly sure when that transition happened, though.
As I walked upstairs to attend to him, the reality hit me -- my “baby” will never really be a baby again. I scooped him up in my arms, and he rested his head on my shoulder with a look of perfect peace about him, as if to say “Yeah, you came for me”. The
dialogue in my head followed up: "I will always come for you and your sister whenever you call, from across the house or across the country."
I walked across the hall and laid him down on our bed before climbing over to take my rightful position. Laying on my right side, pulling him close, we became two C shapes fitting as nicely together as ever before.
As he cupped his hands around my
breast and suckled himself back to sleep, I gazed down at him noting that his fingers seemed longer than they did just last week. His hands shifted form from one month to the next. His body was long and lean, his feet reaching near my knees.
I traced his handprint with my eyes and drew a line gently across his knuckles. As my finger went back and forth a few times, I felt less dimpling and softness under my touch. I came to the conclusion: he is slowly losing his “baby hands." You know, the pillowy soft ones.
His forearm housed a trail of scattered temporary tattoos. His palms told the story of his and his sister’s days painting and marking and creating messes. I thought about the falls he had taken off of his bike recently and the skinned knees and bruises that had
appeared. I remembered the week before- standing over the sink and rubbing at grass stains on his pants. Life now sat apparently on his skin. He was no longer the untouched human I once held within me. No, it seemed in that exact moment he grew right up into a little boy.

I bowed my head down to the top of his head, as I did most nights. I felt the mound of hair that grew from mere wisps. It seemed like I was time-traveling through warped spaces. In one moment, it does not seem that long ago when I was cradling his plump, insecure body close to me in the weeks following his birth.

Starting 2025 with a clear financial plan can set you up for stability and growth. Here are five practical budgeting and saving tips to help achieve stability, growth, and peace of mind in 2025.
Think about what you want to achieve this year. Maybe it’s saving for a down payment, building an emergency fund, or finally planning that dream vacation. Defining your goals gives you a clear destination and keeps you motivated. Need a little help getting started? Try the MSUFCU Fin-Life app to create a personalized plan in just three minutes a week.
A solid budget starts with under-
standing your income and expenses. List essentials like rent, utilities, and groceries, then map out funds for goals like savings, investments, or debt repayment. This clarity helps you make small adjustments so you can keep moving toward what matters most.
Set it and forget it! Automating your savings lets you make steady progress without the extra effort. Arrange for a portion of each paycheck to go directly into savings, so you’re building your future automatically. This is a great way to grow an emergency fund and stay on track.
Want your money to work harder for you? High-yield savings accounts and Certificates can give your savings a boost. Most financial institutions offer limited-time high-rate Certificates that let you grow your savings faster while keeping funds secure. MSUFCU’s Savings BuilderSM account for instance, offers a higher initial rate to help you reach your goals faster.

My name is Dasjahnne Unique Swanson, though many know me as "Dash" or by my initials, D.U.S. Fashion has been my lifelong passion, an affair that began when I first realized that clothing is more than fabric—it's a form of self-expression, a way to tell a story without uttering a word.
I launched my journey in the fashion industry by opening D.U.S Couture, a women's clothing store in Lansing Mall. This venture provided a platform for me to share my vision of empowering women through style. As the women's store thrived, I noticed a significant demand for men's fashion in the area. In response, I expanded the brand with D.U.S for Him, located in the same mall. Today, these stores have merged into a cohesive brand, D.U.S for Him & Her, where my goal is to create a fashion-forward environment that caters to both men and women.
D.U.S Couture is more than a brand—it’s a lifestyle. It's designed to
elevate everyday looks into something extraordinary, while offering high-quality, stylish clothing at accessible prices.
D.U.S for Him & Her is not just a retail space; it's a place where people feel seen, heard, and inspired. Our mission
is to provide more than clothing—we offer confidence, style, and the chance for customers to express their unique selves. Our new location in Lansing Mall serves as a community hub, where fashion, creativity, and empowerment come together.
At D.U.S Couture, we believe fashion has the power to transform not just how people look but how they feel and engage with the world. Whether it’s a perfectly tailored suit for a big presentation or a statement dress for a special occasion, our goal is to provide pieces that help people own their power and command any room. Our VIP program and special events are designed to bring the community together, offering exclusive rewards, experiences, and opportunities for those who are passionate about personal style and self-expression.
Looking ahead, my vision is to leave behind a legacy where fashion and community build on one another. Through offering not just products but also
events, collaborations, and mentorship opportunities, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own style journeys and discover the confidence that comes from within. At D.U.S Couture, we are creating a space where people from all walks of life feel uplifted and empowered.
This is just the beginning of the impact I hope to make, both in fashion and in our local community. The new store launch marks the first step in growing a brand that Lansing can truly be proud of, and I am excited to continue this journey with the support of those around me.
Thank you for giving me the platform to share my story. I look forward to building something beautiful and lasting with this community.
Best regards, Dasjahnne Unique Swanson Owner, D.U.S Couture & D.U.S for Him & Her Lansing Mall

Team education helps you stay on top of preventative maintenance in a few different ways. Something like a packaging machine at your business can be complicated to handle, but with regular and extensive education opportu-
nities, packaging machine preventative maintenance is easy. You can ensure your team can handle the equipment correctly and spot and address issues before they worsen.
