Small Business Spotlight: Al "Leal" Smith – From Marketing to Mentorship and Filmmaking

Irecently had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Al "Leal" Smith, a fellow Clark Atlanta University alumnus and dear friend. Al is one of the most affable and genuine individuals I've had the honor of knowing, with a heart as big as his passion for education. His commitment to leaving no one behind is evident through his mission to empower others using his gift for marketing and media.

Leal holds a BA from Indiana University and an MBA from Clark Atlanta University, combining his formal education with real-world experience to inspire others. His transition from a successful career in marketing, where he spent 16+ years developing campaigns for Fortune 500 companies, to education

speaks volumes about his desire to give back. He saw a need for more positive male role models in communities of color and decided to fill that gap by becoming an educator.

But Leal didn't stop there. His passion for film continued to burn brightly, leading him to launch Purpix Media and Future Filmmakers. Through these ventures, he masterfully merges his love for education and film, creating thought-provoking content while teaching the next generation how to tell their stories through filmmaking.

One of his most impactful initiatives is the One Day Film Skool. In just a

As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is vital to recognize the stories of resilience within the Black community, where breast cancer disproportionately affects women at higher rates and often with more aggressive forms of the disease. This month, we highlight the brave individuals who have not only survived breast cancer but also turned their experiences into powerful advocacy for awareness, early detection, and better healthcare access for Black women.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., but the statistics are particularly concerning for Black women, who are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer compared to their white counterparts. Despite these challenges, Black women across the country are standing strong— sharing their journeys and fighting to ensure that others in their community receive the care, support, and education they need. Here are a few remarkable stories of Black breast cancer survivors whose voices are making a difference.

Ericka Hart: Unapologetic Activism

Ericka Hart, a Black queer femme, and sexuality educator, was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer at the age of 28. Facing cancer at such a young age was daunting, but Ericka transformed her diagnosis into a platform for awareness. Following a double mastectomy, she began speaking publicly about the challenges that Black women and LGBTQ+ individuals face in the healthcare system.

Ericka’s boldness—often baring her scars in public as a symbol of both her survival and advocacy—has sparked vital conversations about health dispar-

ities. She emphasizes the importance of self-advocacy and challenges the biases that often make accessing quality healthcare more difficult for Black women.

Her message: “It’s not just about surviving cancer, but about surviving in a healthcare system that doesn’t always see us. We deserve care, respect, and attention in all spaces.”

Beverly Johnson: Using Her Platform for Change

As a trailblazing model and the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Vogue, Beverly Johnson has long been a symbol of beauty and success. In 2012, she faced a different kind of battle when she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Fortunately, due to regular screenings, her cancer was detected early, and she was able to undergo treatment.

Johnson has since become a powerful advocate for breast cancer awareness, especially within the Black community. She frequently emphasizes the importance of regular mammograms and early detection. Her high-profile platform has allowed her to reach thousands of women with the critical mes-

sage that early detection can save lives.

Her advice: “Do not put off getting a mammogram. Early detection is key, and it can make all the difference in your treatment and survival.”

Vanessa Bell Calloway: Actress Turned Advocate

Actress Vanessa Bell Calloway, beloved for her roles in Coming to America and What’s Love Got to Do with It, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. She opted for a mastectomy to remove the cancer and shared that decision publicly to destigmatize the challenges many women face. Vanessa has since used her platform to encourage Black women to prioritize their health and seek medical care even when facing fears and apprehensions.

Vanessa’s advocacy has focused on breaking the silence surrounding breast cancer in the Black community. She emphasizes the need for regular checkups and open dialogue about health concerns.

Her advice: “Fear is real, but it should never prevent you from taking care of your body. Get checked regularly, talk to your doctor, and make sure your health is a priority.”

Karen Jackson: From Survivor to Founder

Karen Jackson, a long-term breast cancer survivor, turned her experience into action by founding Sisters Network Inc., a national organization focused on breast cancer awareness specifically for Black women. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993, Karen felt that there was a lack of support and education tailored to Black women’s unique needs. Sisters Network has grown into a national movement, connecting Black women with the resources, support, and advocacy they need to navigate breast cancer. Karen’s work has made a tremendous impact in raising awareness and promoting early detection among Black women.

Her belief: “When one of us is diagnosed, we all have a responsibility to ensure she is supported. No one should fight this battle alone.”

Mathew Knowles: Breaking the Silence for Men

While breast cancer is most often associated with women, Mathew Knowles, father of Beyoncé and Solange, shared his own experience with male breast cancer after his diagnosis in 2019. After discovering a small lump in his breast, Knowles underwent a mastectomy and became an outspoken advocate for breast cancer awareness in men.

Knowles’ story is important because it reminds us that breast cancer does not discriminate by gender. His advocacy emphasizes the need for men to pay attention to their bodies and understand that breast cancer can affect them, too.

Meet the Candidate: Lavonté Heard for Lansing School Board - A

Champion for Community-Centered Education

Lavonté Heard is a dynamic candidate running for the Lansing School Board, bringing a vision deeply rooted in community, empowerment, and the well-being of every student.

As a parent, educator, and advocate, Heard’s campaign is centered around the idea that true educational reform starts with the involvement of families and communities—what he calls.

Parent and Family Engagement: The Village as Key Stakeholders

Heard passionately believes that parents and families are not just participants but essential drivers in the educational journey of their children. "The Village knows exactly what our babies need," Heard emphasizes, advocating for a more significant and meaningful role for families in the educational process. He argues that bridging the gap between schools and student learning outcomes begins with giving families a powerful voice, recognizing them as the cornerstone of stu-

dent success.

Empowering Teachers as Partners in Education

Lavonté Heard is equally committed to empowering teachers, viewing them as the experts who can bridge

the cultural and educational gaps that often exist between schools and communities. He envisions a strengthened partnership between "The Village" and teachers, where relationships are built on mutual trust and respect. Heard advocates

for a paradigm shift that honors teachers' expertise while recognizing the community’s role in the self-determination and success of its youth.

Improving Educational Outcomes: A Community Responsibility

For Heard, improving educational outcomes is not just the responsibility of schools— it’s a collective mission. He calls for the community to take an active role in addressing the gaps in student achievement. "We must take our babies' academic, cultural, emotional, and societal literacy into our own hands," he asserts. Heard’s vision includes a partnership between school communities and families to ensure that every student not only crosses the graduation stage but does so with the tools to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society.

Supporting Student Well-Being in a PostPandemic World

Recognizing the unique

challenges that students face in the current climate, Heard is an ardent supporter of initiatives that prioritize mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. "Our babies are screaming, telling us they need more support," Heard says, pointing to the need for more enrichment and mental health resources in schools. He is committed to advocating for policies that address these needs, ensuring that students can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Lavonté Heard’s candidacy for the Lansing School Board is a call to action for the community. He believes that by empowering families, supporting teachers, and focusing on holistic student outcomes, Lansing can create an educational environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed. "We know what to do to promote the achievement of our community," Heard declares. His voice on the School Board promises to be a powerful advocate for ensuring that education officials listen and respond to the needs of "The Village."

Lansing Branch NAACP President Calls Barrett’s Ad Grossly Misleading

Campaign ad in black newspaper has wrong election date, allegedly tries to confuse black voters

LANSING – A recent ad in the black-owned newspaper, Michigan Bulletin, from GOP House candidate Tom Barrett list the wrong election date, which could confuse black voters. Barrett’s ad calls for voters to hit the polls on Nov. 6, when Election Day actually is Tuesday, Nov. 5. This appears to be a gross attempt to mislead black voters. The Lansing Branch NAACP stands by the Michigan Legislative

Black Caucus, who filed a complaint with the Ingham County Prosecutting Office alleging that Barrett’s campaign violated state law.

“This appears to be a blatant effort

to misinform and confuse black voters in Lansing, ” said Harold A. Pope, president of the Lansing Branch NAACP.

“The NAACP will do everything iln our power to help ensure that voters in

Lansing have the correct information regarding Election Day, which is Nov. 5.”

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the largest and most pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation. On April 14, 1919, the Lansing Branch was chartered under the leadership of Branch President C.A. Campbell. Lansing Branch is one of 2,220 branches in the association with the mission to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.

Vice President Kamala Harris Engages In Powerful Conversation With Hip Hop Legends Fat Joe And Too Short At The “Bet Hip Hop Awards” 2024

October 16, 2024 (New York, NY) — Last night, the “BET Hip Hop Awards” 2024featured a pivotal conversation as Vice President Kamala Harris sat down with legendary hip-hop artists Fat Joe and Too Short to discuss her vision for the future and address the key topics facing Black communities today. The impactful exchange aired during the awards ceremony and tackled critical topics, including the economy, small business support, misinformation, and the vital importance of voting.

In the discussion, Vice President Harris shared her long-term vision for the country and outlined her goal to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve success. She discussed her plan to support small businesses and start-ups, noting

that as part of her plan for economic equity, she intends to increase the current tax deduction for start-up businesses from $5,000 to $50,000. This significant change would provide much-needed financial relief to new business owners, particularly those from underrepresented communities, giving them a better chance to succeed.

Fat Joe reflected on the importance of this conversation, saying, "This is about more than just music—it’s about using our platforms to uplift the community and make sure we’re all informed, educated, and empowered to make real change."

MSU Women’s Basketball: Transfers Out of the Program

In recent years, the transfer portal has become a significant part of the college athlete experience. If a school isn’t the perfect fit, another one might be. Before last season, we had five players transfer, though only a couple had received consistent minutes. Mathilda Ekh left and may be bound for the WNBA after performing well for both the Spartans and Virginia Tech. Taiyier Parks left more for academics than for basketball, receiving limited minutes last season

on a strong Ohio State team. The other transfers—Brooklyn Rewers, Olivia Porter, Lauren Walker, and Maddy Skorupski—went to smaller programs where their talents would be more appreciated. This year is similar, with one starter, one bench player, and two depth players transferring out. Below are the departing players, the gaps they’ll leave, and how the Spartans plan to fill them this season:

Deedee Hageman

Deedee has been a leader on this team since her freshman season. As

the highest-ranked recruit to come to Michigan State in the last ten years, she made an immediate impact, quickly becoming one of the best floor generals in MSU history. In her freshman year, under Susie Merchant, with a very different-looking MSU team that included Nia Clouden and Mathilda Ekh, Deedee posted impressive assist numbers, totaling 144. She also tied the best assist rate in school history at 30.4 percent, a record held by her coach Kristin Haynie, a fan-favorite player from the early 2000s and now in her second year

as head coach at Central Michigan. Last year, under new leadership, Deedee had less complete control of the offense. Head Coach Robyn Fralick opted to spread the ball around, taking advantage of a lineup full of guards after early injuries to the team’s bigs, while allowing sophomore Theryn Hallock to take on some of the point guard responsibilities. Despite less time with the ball, Deedee recorded more assists than ever, thanks to a talented Spartan squad full of shooters. Her shooting also improved, making her more of a scoring threat and one of the deadliest weapons on the team in her final season as a Spartan.

Deedee’s primary strength over the last two seasons was her assist-to-turnover ratio; she finished last season ranked 8th in the country with 2.84 assists for every turnover. Her shooting steadily improved throughout her college career, and last season she shot a staggering 51% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc. She has always excelled at attacking the rim, but in the 2023–24 season, particularly in close fourth quarters, she became a dominant offensive force with a versatile layup game.

Like many others, Jaimie Hutchison had put off her mammogram during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Routine health screenings, including cancer screenings, saw a significant drop during this time due to stay-at-home orders and other disruptions caused by the pandemic, leaving a gap in early detection of cancer.

The Chronicle Small Business Spotlight-D.U.S

My name is Dasjahnne Unique Swanson, though many know me as "Dash" or by my initials, D.U.S. Fashion has been my lifelong passion, an affair that began when I first realized that clothing is more than fabric—it's a form of self-expression, a way to tell a story without uttering a word.

I launched my journey in the fashion industry by opening D.U.S Couture, a women's clothing store in Lansing Mall. This venture provided a platform for me to share my vision of empowering women through style. As the women's store thrived, I noticed a significant demand for men's fashion in the area. In response, I expanded the brand with D.U.S for Him, located in the same mall. Today, these stores have merged into a cohesive brand, D.U.S for Him & Her, where my goal is to create a fashion-forward environment that caters to both men and women.

Couture: Empowering Lansing Through Fashion Strategies for Solidifying Your Spot in the Market

Standing out in the marketplace is crucial for any business aiming to thrive. Whether you’re a startup or an established entity, solidifying your spot in the market involves a mix of innovation, strategic planning, and understanding customer needs.

Here are five strategies for solidifying your spot in the market to help you secure your market position, foster growth, and enhance brand visibility.

Building a Strong Brand Identity

A strong brand identity sets you apart from competitors. Start with a compelling logo and color scheme that reflects your brand’s values and vision. Consistency is key, so ensure your branding elements are uniform across all platforms.

Create a brand voice that resonates with your target audience. Your tone should be consistent in all communications, whether it’s professional, playful, or authoritative. This builds trust and

D.U.S Couture is more than a brand—it’s a lifestyle. It's designed to elevate everyday looks into something extraordinary, while offering high-quality, stylish clothing at accessible prices. D.U.S for Him & Her is not just a retail space; it's a place where people feel seen, heard, and inspired. Our mission is to provide more than clothing—we offer confidence, style, and the chance for customers to express their unique

selves. Our new location in Lansing Mall serves as a community hub, where fashion, creativity, and empowerment come together.

At D.U.S Couture, we believe fashion has the power to transform not just how people look but how they feel and engage with the world. Whether it’s a perfectly tailored suit for a big presentation or a statement dress for a special occasion, our goal is to provide pieces that help people own their power and command any room. Our VIP program and special events are designed to bring the community together, offering exclusive rewards, experiences, and opportunities for those who are passionate about personal style and self-expression.

Looking ahead, my vision is to leave behind a legacy where fashion and community build on one another. Through offering not just products but also events, collaborations, and mentor-

recognition over time.

Engage your audience with storytelling. Share your brand’s story, mission, and the people behind it. Authentic narratives foster emotional connections, making customers more likely to choose your brand.

Leveraging Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is essential for reaching a broader audience. Use SEO to improve your website’s visibility on search engines. Focus on relevant keywords, like “market positioning strategies” and

“brand visibility,” to attract organic traffic.

Content marketing, including blogs, videos, and social media posts, is vital for engaging your audience. Provide valuable information that addresses their needs and interests. This positions you as an industry expert.

Email marketing remains a powerful tool for nurturing customer relationships. Send personalized emails with offers, updates, and valuable content to keep your audience engaged and informed.

Networking at Trade Shows

Trade shows are excellent opportunities for networking and showcasing your products. Invest in an eye-catching booth design that reflects your brand’s identity. A well-designed booth attracts visitors and creates a memorable impression.

Prepare engaging presentations and demonstrations to draw attention. Interactive elements like product samples or

ship opportunities, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own style journeys and discover the confidence that comes from within. At D.U.S Couture, we are creating a space where people from all walks of life feel uplifted and empowered.

This is just the beginning of the impact I hope to make, both in fashion and in our local community. The new store launch marks the first step in growing a brand that Lansing can truly be proud of, and I am excited to continue this journey with the support of those around me.

Thank you for giving me the platform to share my story. I look forward to building something beautiful and lasting with this community.

Best regards,

Building strong relationships with customers encourages loyalty and wordof-mouth referrals. Offer exceptional customer service by being responsive and attentive to their needs. Ways Teen Centers Can Enhance Their Social Space

Creating an engaging and inviting environment in teen centers fosters social interaction, personal development, and community engagement. Teen centers that focus on enhancing their social spaces can significantly impact the lives of those who frequent them. In this blog, we’ll explore ways teen centers can enhance their social space to ensure a positive and enriching experience for all.

Creating Comfortable Seating Areas

Comfortable seating areas are a fundamental aspect of any social space. Teen centers should provide a variety of seating options, including sofas, bean bags, and chairs, to accommodate different preferences. These seating areas encourage teens to relax and engage in conversations with their peers, making them feel at home in the center. Ensuring the furniture is durable and easy to clean will maintain a welcoming atmosphere over time.

Incorporating Technology

In today’s digital age, incorporating technology into teen centers’ social

spaces can greatly enhance the experience. Access to computers, tablets, and charging stations allows teens to stay connected, complete homework, and enjoy digital entertainment. Additionally, offering Wi-Fi throughout the center ensures teens can use their devices without any connectivity issues.

Designing Interactive Areas

Interactive areas within the teen center are crucial for fostering creativity and engagement. Spaces dedicated to gaming, arts and crafts, or music can significantly enhance the

social environment. For instance, setting up a gaming zone with consoles and board games provides a fun and interactive way for teens to connect. Similarly, an arts and crafts area with supplies can encourage creative expression and collaboration among teens.

Using a Whiteboard for Communication

Communication is key in teen centers, and using a whiteboard can be an effective tool. A whiteboard can serve multiple purposes in social settings,

When embarking on a Midwest fishing adventure, having the right gear makes all the difference. Sturdy fishing rods, reels, and lines are essential for handling the larger fish common in this region’s waters.

A well-stocked tackle box with various lures and hooks will help you adapt

to changing conditions and fish behavior. Choosing durable equipment ensures you won’t be left empty-handed after a long day on the water.

Dress for Success in Unpredictable Weather

The Midwest’s fall weather can change rapidly, making it essential to dress appropriately to stay comfortable.

such as displaying upcoming events, daily schedules, and inspirational quotes. This visual element keeps teens informed and engaged with the center’s activities and fosters community. Encouraging teens to contribute to the whiteboard can also give them a sense of ownership and involvement in the center.

Offering Diverse Programs and Activities

A wide range of programs and activities is essential for keeping teens engaged and interested in the center. Offering diverse options such as sports, arts, academic support, and social events ensures that there’s something for everyone. Tailoring these programs to the interests and needs of the teen population can significantly enhance their experience and encourage regular participation.

Waterproof outerwear will protect you from unexpected rain showers, while insulated layers keep you warm during chilly mornings. Don’t forget a good pair of boots to provide traction and support while navigating muddy shores and rocky terrain.

Prioritize Safety on Your Fishing Excursion

Safety should never take a backseat when heading on a fishing trip, especially in the Midwest’s remote areas. Packing a well-equipped first aid kit prepares you for minor injuries or accidents that may occur.

A reliable map and compass will help you stay on course and prevent you from getting lost in unfamiliar surroundings. Carrying an emergency communication device is a wise precaution, as it means

help is just a call away if needed.

Prepare for a Comfortable Overnight Stay

For those planning to camp during their fishing excursion, packing the right camping gear guarantees a comfortable experience. A high-quality tent and sleeping bag provide shelter and warmth as temperatures drop after sunset.

Cooking equipment allows you to enjoy hot meals at your campsite, fueling your energy for another day on the water. Lightweight, durable items make packing and transportation much more manageable, so be mindful of how heavy your equipment is.
