2020 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR Sportsman of the Year Kobe Matsen, freshman The 6-foot-7 Matsen played both basketball and baseball for the Blazers, earning North Region Freshman

of the Year after averaging 11.7 points and 6.4 boards per game. He also pitched five innings while striking out five and allowing zero hits in a shortened season.

Sportswoman of the Year Selena Cudney, sophomore Cudney was North Region MVP in basketball after averaging 13.1 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 59.7 percent from the field. She helped the Blazers end the season on a 14-game win streak.

Boys Athlete of the Year Boys Athlete of the Year Lucas Ashley, Adna (left) Ashley became the first two-time state champ in Pirates history after capturing the 182-pound title at Mat Classic XXXII after winning the 152-pound bracket in 2019.

Ashton Haight, Onalaska (bottom left) Haight was named the Associated Press 2B Player of the Year after leading the Loggers to the 2B state title as a running back. He was also the All-Area Offensive MVP. Brody Klein, Rainier (bottom right) Klein battled for a 10-6 win over Kalama’s Abram Foreman to win the 160-pound Class 1B/2B title.

Girls Athlete of the Year Girls Athlete of the Year Kal Schaplow, Toledo (right) Schaplow not only won the 2B girls state javelin title in 2019, the Eastern Washington University-bound senior was named the Central 2B League basketball MVP and the All-Area basketball MVP.

Carmen Cleveland-Barrera, Onalaska The Western Washington University-bound senior won nine of 13 shot put events in 2019, culminating in a personal-record throw of 41 feet, 4.5 inches to win the 2B girls state shot put title.

Payton Aselton, Adna Aselton was named the All-Area girls soccer co-MVP, helping the Pirates finish third at state, and was an All-Area selection in basketball, as well.

Carter McCoy, W.F. West (bottom left) A first-team all-league selection in both basketball and football, McCoy’s athleticism allowed him to average 13.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and two steals per game.

Girls Basketball Player of the Year Kal Schaplow, Toledo (right) Schaplow was the county’s lone girls Associated Press firstteam all-state selection, averaging 17 points, five rebounds, 2.3 assists, two steals and one block per game. She was All-Area MVP, as well.

Drea Brumfield, W.F. West The 6-foot-2 sophomore is the nation’s 22nd-ranked small forward in the 2020 class, per Prep Girls Hoops Washington. She’s collected multiple Division-I offers, including Washington State, after posting 12.3 points, seven rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.4 assists per game.

Paige Winter, Rochester The William Jessup signee is a two-time All-Area and first-team all-EvCo pick.

The formidable post averaged 16.3 points per game as a senior while finishing with over 1,200 career points.

Boys XC Athlete of the Year Nicholas Marty, Toledo Marty was the county’s top boys finisher at state in 2019, placing sixth in the 2B/1B championships with a time of 16:12.70.

Girls XC Athlete of the Year Selena Niemi, Rainier Niemi placed 12th at the 2B/1B state meet as a sophomore with a time of 20:38.9

Football Player of the Year Ashton Haight, Onalaska (left) Haight ran his way to the Class 2B State Player of the Year, racking up 2,714 yards on 345 carries (a 7.8 yards-per-carry average) while tallying 35 touchdowns.

Alex Frazier, Onalaska Frazier was named the All-Area Defensive MVP and was likely the best 2B lineman in the state.

Leandre Gaines, W.F. West The Eastern Washington University-bound two-star defensive end compiled 45 tackles, 12 for loss and five sacks to earn the 2A Evergreen Conference Defensive MVP.

Volleyball Player of the Year Andee Nelson, Mossyrock (right) The Central 2B League MVP and All-Area MVP is heading to Centralia College after posting 303 kills, 193 digs, 35 aces, and 15 blocks in 2019.

Paytton Crawford, W.F. West An All-State and All-Area selection, the 5-foot-6 senior setter dished out 282 assists with an 89.6 percent passing efficiency.

Morgan Houghtelling, Mossyrock The 5-foot-7 junior setter amassed an astounding 502 assists with 116 digs, while connecting on 92 percent of her serves with 42 aces.

Baseball Player of the Year Leandre Gaines, W.F. West (left) Gaines was a first-team all-EvCo selection in 2019, going 2-0 with 2.52 ERA, 26 strikeouts and two saves before rupturing his appendix. His 90 MPH fastball brought interest from LSU, Oregon and Gonzaga.

Jeremy Wood, Centralia Wood, a firstteam all-EvCo and All-Area selection, hit .346 with seven stolen bases in 2019. He was also 3-3 on the mound with a 1.58 ERA in 35 innings.

Logan Brewer, Tenino The shortstop and Grays Harbor signee was a first-team 1A Evergreen Conference pick after batting .360 with a .410 on-base percentage. He also posted a 3.00 ERA with a four-pitch arsenal.

Softball

Haley Rainey, Adna The C2BL MVP, Rainey posted a 1.40 ERA during league play and hitting .684 with a .703 OBP, four home runs and 27 RBIs while helping the Pirates capture the 2B state title.

Player of the Year Ashlyn Whalen, W.F. West Whalen is a home run machine. She owns the Bearcats single-season HR record (11) and has 21 career dingers in just two seasons. The Boise State signee helped the Bearcats finish third at state last season.

Britney Patrick, PWV The Pacific 2B League MVP, Patrick batted .554 with 31 runs and 54 RBI and eight home runs. The Saint Martin’s University signee owns the Titans’ single season home run record (14).

Golf Girls Golfer of the Year Elizabeth Twining, W.F. West (left) Twining was the lone 2A girls golfer in the county to qualify for state in 2019, narrowly missing out on the day-two cut to place. The second-team all-league selection was 18th at the District 4 Tournament.

Boys Golfer of the Year Rudy Voetberg, Centralia Voetberg, a state alternate, was the 2A EvCo MVP after finishing with a conference-best average of 39.5.

Brett Wasson, Centralia (bottom left) Wasson was the lone boys golfer in the county to advance to state after shooting a 158 to place seventh at the District 4 Tournament.

Lexi Erb, Centralia (bottom left) Erb was a second-team all-league pick in the 2A EvCo as a junior in 2019 after finishing 23rd at the District 4 Tournament.

Camryn Bostwick, W.F. West (bottom right) Bostwick made the second day of the District 4 Tournament after recording a twoday total of 173 to finish in 27th place.

Laney Barker, W.F. West (bottom right) Barker shot a two-round score of 225 to place 29th at the District 4 Tournament in 2019.

Girls Player of the Year Brienna Dell, Tenino (top) Dell is an offensive eruption, exploding for 42 goals and 10 assists for the Beavers while garnering the All-Area co-MVP.

Alex Brummer, W.F. West Brummer was named a first-team all-2A EvCo keeper as a junior in 2019.
