We' ve

Gotta Fight For the Right To

Repair!?

SUPPORT H.R. 906!

Do you enjoy working on your motorcycle? Do you want to guarantee access to the parts, tools and service information needed to modify, service and maintain your bike?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES to these questions, it’s time to contact your member of the House of Representatives and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 906, the “Right to Equitable and Professional Auto Industry Repair Act” or the “REPAIR Act”.

The REPAIR Act ensures that vehicle owners or repair shops are NOT denied access to the information, software or tools needed to work on vehicles. The proposed law also establishes rules regarding vehicle data access. This common sense law will help preserve consumer choice and a fair marketplace.

As of July 1st, 32 members of the House of Representatives have signed on in support. That is twice as many as were on the bill before the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) held its Bikers Insider the Beltway event in May! The MRF is making a difference, let’s keep up the pressure!

Congress returns to Washington D.C. Tuesday, after a two-week break. That makes it the perfect time to contact your lawmaker and tell them you support H.R. 906.

About Motorcycle Riders Foundation

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) provides leadership at the federal level for states’ motorcyclists’ rights organizations as well as motorcycle clubs and individual riders. The MRF is chiefly concerned with issues at the national and international levels that impact the freedom and safety of American street motorcyclists. The MRF is committed to being a national advocate for the advancement of motorcycling and its associated lifestyle and works in conjunction with its partners to help educate elected officials and policymakers in Washington and beyond. Special Risks to Motorcycle Riders

We who ride motorcycles are particularly exposed to this risk when we respect the school bus stop arm, especially when we’re in the opposing lane of traffic. Opposing lanes are required to stop for a school bus stop arm unless the opposing lanes are separated by a concrete barrier or other solid medians. Even then, we’re required to slow down and use caution in the presence of children.

When You See a School Bus

School Bus Stops Present Risk to Motorcycles

School Bus Stops Present Risk to Motorcycles

I was told about an accident; years ago, a motorcyclist was killed when he stopped at a school bus stop arm and the car behind him either did not see the school bus stop or did not see him because they were distracted and collided with the rear of his bike.

When you see a school bus in the traffic ahead or if you are following behind it, anticipate that the school bus is likely to stop and require all traffic to stop along with it. Leave yourself plenty of room, make sure that you cover your brake, and maybe even flash your brake light as you are stopping. This will help the vehicles behind you see you and be aware that you are stopping.

Leave Yourself an Exit Route

In addition, make sure to leave yourself an exit route. You may need the ability to swerve or maneuver your motorcycle into a safer place. This is especially true if you have reason to believe that the vehicle behind you does not see you and is likely to collide with you. With our

future bikers riding the school bus, this is a friendly reminder! Remind your family, friends and especially new driver!

The Seasons of our Sessions:

As we head into the later part of the summer, we will be heading into the start of getting our pencils sharpened and paper ready. Although ABATE has always worked to defend and maintain our liberties as bikers, that cannot be done without each of us actively being involved with our representatives. That includes Federal, State and Local representatives.

Who is YOUR representative?

That’s a great question and even if you do know who it is do you really know them. I have personally worked on this as my #1 priority since I joined ABATE some years ago. It doesn’t matter what the bill is if you can’t talk to your representative they can and should represent you.

The How:

If you go to the South Carolina Legislature Website at www.scstatehouse.gov you will see a spot in the bottom left-hand corner where you can type in your information to find your legislatures just by putting in your address. Here is what I get, and I will explain why this is important. You see with just a little typing and a click you can get to each one of your state or federal representatives and let them know how you feel on our issues. That doesn’t mean that they will reply, answer, or even work on your issues but it does mean you have a way.

The rest takes a lot of time and patience to build a relationship of trust, which will help us work on issues that concern our liberties.

The Homework:

So now that you have some tools to use let’s go out and start applying them and see what results we get. Next month I am going to write about three different individuals and their work to get their representatives in the House to cosponsor on the hands-free bill. The results may surprise you or at least the stories will.

If you want to have the most current information make sure you are part of the Legislative Alerts email list. Just send me an email stating you want to be added.

THE NEW RAINSUIT

Back in late 2021, five brothers and I took a week off work and just went for a ride. While we did have a couple of destinations in mind, the plan was to wake up every day, pick a direction, and roll out.

We started our trip by heading up into Kentucky with plans to visit the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum. Since I am a Christian and Baptist minister, both of those destinations had been on my bucket list for quite some time.

On day two, we toured a giant replica of what Noah’s Ark would look like based on dimensions and building materials found in the Bible. There are no words to describe how awesome this experience was for me! After an early breakfast, the next morning we headed 45 miles north to the Creation Museum. Again, an AMAZING day!

We had discussed our next stop during supper the night before. Ultimately, we decided to ride south to Nashville, TN and pick up the Natchez Trace Parkway.

As we were leaving the Creation Museum, we began to encounter a light drizzle. Always cautious, and seeing rain forecasted in the direction where we were headed, the group stopped and donned rain gear.

My rainsuit of choice is the fluorescent orange and black, twohundred-dollar Harley Davidson version. While I had tried many different rainsuits in the past, this one seemed to work the best. The suit had served me well for nearly ten years, and I assumed it would last another ten.

This was not to be.

Initially, the light drizzle was no big deal. I rode happily along, wiping my face shield every so often so my vision would not be impaired, and was enjoying the ride. Then, the rain began to get worse.

Within thirty minutes, the light drizzle had been replaced by a torrential downpour! Water was ponding on the roadway and visibility was limited to just a few feet in front of the motorcycles. I was beginning to wonder if I would see animals lining up two-by-two and walking back toward the Ark we had left in Kentucky!

At first, as it had always done, my rainsuit was keeping me dry. Then, I began to feel some water creeping through to the seat of my pants. This was somewhat uncomfortable, but not intolerable. Next, water sneaked down my shirt, which bothered me even more. When it was all said and done, I was soaked.

I was still not convinced I needed a new suit. I bought seam sealer, and some kind of spray stuff hoping to repair the rainsuit, but on the very next trip, it failed me again.

Now, I am very frugal… My wife has another word for me, CHEAP!

Because of my lack of wanting to spend another two hundred bucks, I dealt with that leaky rainsuit for the next two years. With every road trip, poker run, and biker benefit, the leaks got worse. Then, on a trip home from Richmond VA, I’d had enough! I was tired of being wet and miserable.

Earlier this year, I walked into the Greenville, SC Harley Davidson dealer with one purpose in mind, to buy a new rainsuit. The sales associate assisted me in picking one out, I walked up to the register, and begrudgingly slapped my card on the counter!

Fast forward to Memorial Day weekend 2023. We were headed home from “Rolling to Remember” in DC in a horrible rain storm, and I was once again nice and dry. Why had I waited so long? Why had I continued down the same path knowing the results would not change? All I had to do was go get another one and all would be well.

The solution to my problem was as easy as buying a new suit, but because I was stubborn and greedy, I refused. When I finally made the change, my ride was so much better.

We as people do this all the time. We willfully continue down the wrong path, fully aware of the disastrous results, until we have made a miserable mess of our lives. Whether it be pride, selfishness, greed, or whatever else, we make no effort to change.

Just as that sales associate directed me to where I needed to go to solve my problem, Jesus Christ stands ready to lead us down the righteous path. No matter how many bad decisions we have made, no matter how long we have run away from him, He stands ready with open arms to lead us to Salvation.

Are you tired of that same old road you’re traveling? Why not make a change? Jesus is waiting to help you live your best life today!

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life!” Romans 6:23

Ride on and stay safe, Dennis Reynolds

Fundraiser for “Butter”

was struck by a deer while riding his motorcycle, and broke his leg. He’ll be out of work for a while, and he needs help paying bills. He’s an active member of the CMA Jabez Riders in Spartanburg. The deer wasn’t so lucky. It died as a result.

I saw the flyer for the June 24th event on the Armored Saints Motorcycle Ministry Facebook, and decided to go. Registration started at 10:00AM at High Voltage Harley-Davidson in Spartanburg, with additional stops at Dark Horse Motorcycles in Gaffney, Iron Powersports in Inman,

D2 Power Sports in Greer, and the last stop at C&C Thunder in Cowpens where hot dog plates would be available along with 50/50 drawing, and a silent auction. All stops were in South Carolina so motorcycle helmets would be optional.

I arrived at the dealership at about 10:00AM to see many of the bikes already lined up for the run. I parked in front with the other bikes, walked inside the building, and placed a stack of Carolina Chrome magazines on the registration table when I gave my donation. I wasn’t going on the run because I had plans for the afternoon.

20 WWW.CHROMESC.COM

I met members of the Armored Saints and started talking with them inside the showroom when the sales manager walked up, and tried to sell me a new Harley. I told him that I wouldn’t trade in “Miss Vickie” for any new Harley no matter how many new features it had. I teased him a bit on how great a Victory was compared to a Harley, and Harley riders should thank Victory for the upgrades that Harley made on their motorcycles to try to match the Victory. It was all in fun. I wouldn’t buy a new motorcycle of any kind. “Miss Vickie” fits me perfectly, and I’m too old to change now.

I walked outside, and met “Butter”. He wasn’t on crutches anymore but he wasn’t healed either. He had steel rods placed in his leg, and that takes time to heal. He told me a little about

the accident, and how he went back to get the dead deer but someone took it before he could get there. He wanted to mount the head as a reminder of the accident, and maybe have a few venison dinners too. I started to walk around to see who was there. I noticed “Cowboy”. He rode his bike into the service department to get air in his back tire. It only had 15psi. We talked for a while. Then other bikers walked up to say hello and they all got into a picture or two. At about 10:30, bikes started to leave. They weren’t going in one large group. I took a few pictures as they left, and then left myself. I headed back north on I85, and exited at Rt 105. I then stopped at the Strawberry Hill outlet to buy Cindy a delicious cantaloupe. When I got home we went out for a delicious lunch before I went to another biker event in Gastonia.

Dr. Dilligaf

Dear Dr. Dilligaf, How do I attract more women when I am on my Bike?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

Since you didn't send a picture or give any other important information: such as physique, looks, age, or even gender I can only help with general things.

First, be confident.

It's a big attention getter. Next, be funny.

People are attracted by a sense of humor.

Radiate calm. Humans are naturally drawn to those who seem comfortable regardless of circumstance. But, I have to warn you, that if you follow these suggestions, the end result is that you may find someone. You may even fall in love. But given time the things that drew you together: Confidence, Humor and Calmness will become the reasons you can't be together. For Confidence will become Ego. Humor will mean immaturity and Calmness suggests that you don't care. So, my question to you is: Are you SURE that you want to attract one?

Dr. Dilligaf PSA

I just wanted to put out a couple of reminders about safe summertime riding. Everyone can stand to be reminded of a few things that will make summertime riding both more comfortable and safer.

When riding in dry, hot weather on the highways make an effort to get behind a large GM automobile or an Ice Cream truck. These two vehicles produce the most air conditioning condensation and will provide needed hydration while riding.

If you ride a bagger or if you sport a backpack, you should always have another shirt. Be certain to put summer air in your tires so they don't get as hot. Remember to look where you want to go. Slowing down as quick as you can beats laying it down.

When on a motorcycle you are invisible. On a loud motorcycle you are both invisible and noisy.

The really big bugs hit you like kamikazes. "Yep, I'm dying but this is going to hurt you long after I'm gone."

Be careful when you are maneuvering around other people, bikes only fall over when others are watching.

When you are two-up be twice as careful. Have a safe summer and fall riding season.
