The role a mask plays in our society today is very different from my association of a mask from when I was a kid. Today, a mask is used for protection, to keep us safe from “the virus. To contrast this definition, a mask can also be used as a tool to hide your identity and as a child, that is how I perceived a mask as. A mask holds the power to allow people to present themselves however they want. In light of Halloween, I took this opportunity to explore a different side of an object present in each of our lives as we speak. For this series, I captured images in the dark to highlight the power of the mask on the models face and used direct lighting to show the fear and strength the mask holds. The photos are in their raw format, emphasizing the purity of identity and shedding light on how light and reflection can manipulate and cause an effect in an image.

Being a teenager has never been easy, but social distancing and the isolation that go hand in hand with living in 2020, make the experience of being a teenager difficult in ways that adults will never understand. My students have shared that they are angry, disappointed, and numb after 8 months of separation from the life they were hoping they would live. These teens question the society their parents, teachers, and political leaders have presented to them throughout their young lives. Take Me Away is a visual representation of my desire to rescue this generation from the problems they are not responsible for creating. Face coverings, a broken health care system, forest fires, climate change, racism, poverty, homelessness, and outrageous student loan debt loom over the heads of these bright students. It is not easy to generate optimism about the future amidst the storm of mismanagement we currently face. Take Me Away seeks to honor the unique experience of my beloved photography students, members of the newly entitled Gen Z. Set in the center of a Pacific Northwest Forest, disenchanted teens await their abduction to a new world, a better world. They are patient, focussed, and ready.

For the Chroma Magazine, Ilume, I wanted to work with some things that I don't usually touch on in my photography. I mostly do nature and landscape photography, with a few model shots here and there, so for this series I used my brother in his plague doctor costume, hinting on covid19 and how plague like it is. In some of the photos you see a building, this building is an abandoned building at Fort Vancouver. It was a post hospital for the military up until the mid 1990s, and was one of the main hospitals used for the spanish flu. I decided to do this series based on the plague and adding that spooky feel because that's what current day feels like, anyone can catch covid and die from and a lots have already lost their lives due to lack of action to the virus taken by the government, it is almost as if we are back in plague times.

When I began this photo series I knew I wanted to play with small amounts of light, and the Halloween decorations I had just brought out for the season. I didn’t brainstorm exactly what photos I was going to take before the shoot. I got all of my materials out and started experimenting, the basic theme of the photos around them being creepy and having lots of shadows. To shoot this series all I used was my phone camera, a flashlight, and some of my halloween decorations. Mainly the only light I used in the photos was from candlelight. There were only a few photos where I used the flashlight for some extra shadows on the skulls. What I was most excited about for this photo series is that I had never done an October Chroma before. I haven’t taken many spooky photos and was excited to see what I could do. Most of the time, when I don’t have a specific plan for the photos I am about to take, I will try as many things as possible to see what works. This series is a good example of that, I would always tweak the lighting in every shot by a little and change the composition of my photos. Also, I made sure that I had a good mix between portrait and landscape photos in this series to make them more varied.

This is my spin on the infamous sheet ghost we've seen on halloween night for years. Sheet ghost are a classic and always will be.The placement of the images reflect a ghost appearing and then disappearing swiftly. This is portrayed through the opacity of the ghost in each image.

My idea came from playing the game “Destiny 2, in which there were shadowy, floating humanoid figures that would hover over the player as they walked. This left an impression on me, as I love creepy horror, and I wanted to recreate that same feeling for this series. I grabbed some friends and hauled them, along with a few lights and a step stool, into the woods at dusk. The harsh, single source lighting was provided by a very bright flashlight, which represented and imitated moonlight. After shooting, I pulled the images into photoshop and added fog, shadows, and generally tweaked the photos to improve the effect. I am happy with the result, although I wish I could have produced more photos.
