Meeting Rooms

Western Financial Place Meeting Room 1 accommodates 12 -15participants. This includes tables, chairs, a Whiteboard, and sink. Memorial Arena accommodates groups up to 50 participants. This includes tables and chairs, and a small kitchen area.

Leisure Access Program

The Leisure Access Program is for Cranbrook residents whose limited income may prevent them from participating in basic recreation services. Applicants are screened to verify that residents with low income may receive access to the program and the reduced rate it offers.

Registration Policy

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis

All fees are payable in fullat the time of registration unless otherwise advertised.

DON'T WAIT TO REGISTER- Some courses fill up quickly, while others are cancelled there is insufficient registration prior to the class start date if If a course is full, request to be placed on a waitlist. New courses are sometimes added if there is enough interest

Withdrawal from a program registration with no less than 72 hours' notice- Full Refund

Withdrawalfrom a program registration with less than 72 hours' notice - Full Refund less a $10 administrativefee.

Withdrawal from a program once it has started- No Refund

Refunds for programs withdrawal due to medical or special circumstances can be requested with appropriate documentation and must be approved by an authorized Recreation and Culture staff member. Refunds will be pro-rated base on withdrawal approval date and a $10 administration fee will be applied.

Recreation & Programming

Volunteer in a multitude of programs such as art, sports, and special events. Examples of responsibilities include:

Running or supporting a program (basketball, volleyball and soccer)

Running or supporting skate programs (public skating, stick and puck)

Helping with a special events

Youth Volunteers (minimum 14yrs)

Youth Volunteers support the recreation team while they gain valuable experiences and even graduation volunteer hours. Examples of responsibilities include:

Providing assistance in programs (basketball, volleyball and soccer)

Sharing their talents as they mentor younger children.

BRONZE MEDALLION

Pre-requisites: 13 years of age by last day of course

Description: Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self -rescue techniques, defence and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 400m swim.

Description: Take your foundational rescue skills and techniques, and apply them as an Assistant Lifeguard! Learn how to scan and supervise a pool setting and execute rescues in a team! In this course you will practice more complex and difficult rescues, as well as learn about leadership and how to work within a team dynamic.

Squash

Squash is an exhilarating, high-paced, competitive racketand ball sport played by two opposing players, one versus one, within a court that is walled off on all four sides. The two players alternate hitting the ball with their racket at playable surfaces of the walls. Squash is also sometimes played with four total players with teams of two.

Wallyball

A fast-paced and fun sport played on a racquetball court where teams of 2to 4 players volley a ball over a net using volleyball ruleswith a twist! The walls are in play, adding exciting angles and strategy to the game. Great for allskill levels and perfect for indoor recreation.

PROGRAMS- AQUATICS

Program Descriptions

Adult Lanes and Leisure: Adult Lanes and leisure is available for adults to swim laps, exercise, water walk, hot tub, and enjoy the facility at their leisure. This runs during all operational hours.

The main pool and leisure pool are both available with the exception of the leisure pool being unavailable during Swim Lessons.

There will often be more than 1 lane available, however the following times will be restricted to 1 available lane:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11am - 12pm

Monday-Thursday 4pm - 6pm

*Subject to change due to bookings.

Parent and Tot: A time where caregivers with toddlers can come and enjoy the water in the Leisure Pool. Enjoy our tot slide, water toys, and water features. Expect to share the leisure pool and hot tub with lots of little kids during this time. Waves & slide are left off.

Family Swim: A time set aside for families with young children to enjoy the warm and shallow water of the wave pool without the crowds. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 16 years. Waves & slide are left off.

Public Swim: All facilities will be open including the main pool, leisure pool, hot tub, steam room, and sauna. Other water features will beopen and running periodically throughout the swim as well, including the bubble pit, rain drop, waves and slide.

Swim Lessons: Organized instructional programs and lessons are being provided. Priority for space will be given to our instructional programs therefore most ofthe facility is not accessible for public use. There is no access to the leisure pool, and much of the lane pool will be occupied as well. Waves & slide are left off.

Lunchtime Laps: come enjoy our main swimming pool for an hour dedicated to lane swimming. Additional lanes will be added to accomodate increased traffic, ensuring plenty of space for swimmers of all paces! Whether you're looking for a quick workout or a refreshing break, Lunchtime laps is the perfecrt way to energize your afternoon. Please note: the wave pool is closed during Lunchtime Laps.

AQUAFIT

Deep Aquafit

Deep-water training provides a unique and open environment free from gravity and impact. Classes will incorporate cardiovascular and muscle conditioning exercises. This is a challenging workout for both skilled and unskilled aquatic fitness participants. It is recommended that participants utilize the buoyancy belts (available in the equipment room), however is not mandatory. This class takes place in the deep end of the main pool

Shallow Aquafit

Shallow water aquafit has the benefit of providing excellent cardio, strength, and flexibility training. Swim For Life - Lesson Overview

Parent & Tot Levels

Jellyfish 1

Recommended age:4-12months

Provides an orientation to water for infants and their parent/caregiver. Parents/caregivers will learn how to swim safely with their infant in the pool through instruction of holds and supports. Infants will be introduced to getting their face wet, blowing bubbles, and floating with the help of their caregiver.

Goldfish 2

Recommended age:12-24months

Teaches toddlers how to play in the water safely! They'll learn how to enter and exit the water with help from their parent/caregiver and will play games to encourage them to get their face wet and blow bubbles in the water. Toddlers will also develop floating and kicking skills with the support oftheir parent/caregiver.

Seahorse 3

Recommendedage:2-3years

Teaches toddlers how to safely enter the water wearing a PFD. They'll develop underwater skills such as submersion and opening their eyes underwater. 'starfish' floats, 'pencil' floats and kicking skills are taught using songsandgames.

Preschool Levels

Octopus 1

Recommended age: 3-5 years

Transitional level which transfers the preschooler to the care of the instructor. Preschoolers will have fun learning to getinand out ofthe water. They'll learnhow to put theirfaceinthewater,blowbubblesinthe water, and how to float and glide.

Crab 2

Recommended: Completed Octopus Preschool 1

Teaches preschoolers how to safely jump into chest-deep water and how to swim wearing a PFD. They'll learn submersion skills and continue to work on floats, glides, and kicking with buoyant objects. Orca 3

Recommended: Completed Crab Preschool 2

Teaches preschoolers how to safelyjumpinto chest deep water safelywearinga PFD. They'lllearnhow to submerge and exhale underwater, retrieve objects underwater, and will continue developing their floating, gliding and kicking skills.

Sea Lion 4

Recommended: Completed Orca Preschool 3

Teaches deep water entries and treading water wearing a PFD. Become skilled at retrieving objects from the bottom of the pool in chest-deep water and performing front and side glide. Front crawl wearing a PFD is also introduced.

Narwhal 5

Recommended: Completed Sea Lion Preschool 4

Teaches Swim to Survive skills wearing a PFD. Front crawl and back crawl are introduced as well as interval fitness training. Also learn how to tread water and perform vertical whip kick with a buoyant aid. *once complete, preschoolers can register in Swimmer2.

SWIM LESSONS

Swimmers Levels

Recommended age: 6-12 years

Swimmer 1

These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They'll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They'll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Swimmer 2

These advanced beginners willjump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They'll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

Swimmer 3

Thesejunior swimmers will dive and do in-water front somersaults and handstands. They'll work on 15 m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15 m.

Swimmer 4

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to SurviveĀ® Standard. They'll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or backcrawl interval training

Swimmer 5

These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They'll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they'll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke.

Swimmer 6

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They'll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They'll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they'll complain about the 300 m workout.

SWIM LESSONS

Rookie, Ranger, Star Patrol Academy

Age: 8Y-12Y

Swimmers will continue to develop their swimmer skills while increasing focus on first aid and lifesaving skills. Each level is broken into three categories. H20 proficiency. First Aid and Recognition and Rescue Swimmers will receive a poster to track their progress in each category with completion stickers for each and a badge for completing an entire level. These courses better prepare swimmers for the Bronze level courses as well.

Junior Lifeguard

Age: 9Y- 12Y

*Must Have Completed Swimmer 6

Candidates should meet the swim to survive standard: roll into deep water, tread water for 1 minute, and swim at least 50 meters

Canadian Swim Patrol training provides a head start for the Bronze Awards needed to become a certified National Lifeguard.

Kids will have fun in a club atmosphere focusing on water proficiency, first aid, recognition, self rescue and rescue of others.

Adult Swimmer

Adult 1

You'll work towards a 10-15 m swim on your front and back. You'll do jump entries from the side and recover an object from the bottom in chest-deep water. Improve your fitness and your flutter kick with 4 x 9-12 m interval training

Adult 2

Kick it up a notch working on two interval training workouts of 4 x 25 m kicking and front or back crawl. You'll be able to perform dive entries and demonstrate breaststroke arms and breathing over 10-15 m. You'll be supporting yourself at the surface for 1-2 minutes, and showing off your handstands in shallow water.

Adult 3

No sweat (or at least none anyone can see). You'll learn eggbeater, stride entries and compact jumps. You'll be doing a 300 m workout and sprinting 25-50 m. You'll master your front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.

AQUATICS Guidelines

Upon entering any municipal facility, participants agree to put safety firstandtreatthe facility, fellow users, and staff with respect. Those who act in a disrespectfulmanner or fail to follow policies and procedures may have their access suspended.

Safe, Respectful, Inclusive.

Cranbrook Recreation and Culture promotes a positive environment based on mutual respect and cooperation. Staff and visitors can help achieve this by: Creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all participants. Treating fellow participants, staff, equipment, and facilities with respect. Ensuring expectations, regulations, and policies are followed. Everyone has a role in supporting a positive, safe environment.

Cell Phones

To protect the privacy and property of customers and visitors, we have guidelines for the use of cell phones, cameras, camera-equipped cell phones and PDAs, as well as other recording devices in City of Cranbrook facilities.

The public must speak withthe Aquatic Manager before taking any photos while at the pool. Arrangements can be made to accommodate requests for individual and group photos.

Change Rooms/Washrooms: Please turn off and store cell phones/PDAs/cameras/recording devices when using the change rooms or washrooms. Taking pictures within change rooms or washrooms is against the law.

Cell phones are restricted to the viewing area and bleachers within the pool vicinity. Swimmers are now permitted to leave their cell phones in the aforementioned areas at their own risk.

Cash Counters: For security reasons and to protectthe personal information of patrons, taking photos in the cash counter area is prohibited.

Public Areas (Lobby, Arena, Courts, Classrooms, Party Room): Photos are permitted in these public areas with the permission of a staff member.

Patrons are encouraged to report any individuals using a cell phone/PDA/camera or other recording device in a suspicious manner to a staff member immediately. If patrons have any concerns or questions regarding these guidelines, they should talk to the Aquatic Supervisor.

Individuals who do not comply with these guidelines or are using these devices in a suspicious manner will be asked to leave and/or be banned from the facility or be charged by Cranbrook Police Service under theCanadian Criminal Code.

Emergencies

If someone needs your help, please assist if it is safe to do so.

If you witness a dangerous situation or an emergency, notify a staff member immediately.

In the event of a major emergency, an alarm may be sounded, and the area evacuated. Please follow staff direction and assist if asked.

Be prepared to provide a statement if you were a witness. It will help staff and emergency responders handle the situation, and help prevent a reoccurrence.

First aid assistance is always available.

Change Rooms

Children ages 0-4 yearsoldmay use the male or female changes rooms with their parent or guardian. Children of the opposite gender ages 5 years or older must use the family change room or the change room of their gender.

Family Change Room is for use by parents with children up to ages 12 years old and individuals who require assistance or privacy due to special circumstances. A parent or guardian must accompany their child when using the family change room. Family Change Room is gender neutral.

Lost,Stolen, Damaged Items

Lost or stolen items are not the responsibility of the City of Cranbrook's Recreation and Culture Department. Clients are encouraged to leave valuable items at home, or locked away if lockers are available for use.

The City of Cranbrook's Recreation and Culture Department is not responsible for damage to vehicles that take place on municipal property.

Private Promotion/Business

Individuals are not permitted to promote products or services they represent while using the pool. External fitness instructors, swimming instructors, therapists and personal trainers are not permitted to privately train or hostclassesatthe pool unlessauthorized by Municipal staff.

Release, Waiver, and Indemnity

The participant (or parent or guardian if Participant is undertheageof 18) voluntarily assumes anyriskof injury or damage in connection with the use of services or facilities, and releases, discharges, andagrees to indemnify and save harmless the City of Cranbrook and its employees, agents, and volunteers from any liability, claim, demand, or cost whatsoever incurred arising out of the participation of the Participant in the program at the facility.

Discover, giggle, make a little mess-repeat! Toddler Tuesday is our fun, hands-on program for little ones and their grown-ups. Sessions featurethemed story time (often in partnership with the Cranbrook Public Library), followed by engaging crafts and activities inspired by the season or the museum's collections.

Seniors' Knitting Program

Drop-ins Welcome

Timeline: Wednesdays from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

A program where seniors can meet to share and learn knitting techniques. The knitting program promotes fine motor skills, creativity, social connection, and combats loneliness and depression.

Scrapbooking Cro

Timeline: irregular, generally once per month from September through May

Weekend-long sessions where participants bring their own scrapbooking projects to work on. Scrapbooking in a group promotes socialization, decreases stress and anxiety, exercises cognitive skills, and enhances overall well-being.

Technology Tutoring

In-person one-to-one technology training is available through appointment.
