Other big radio personalities such as Fearne Cotton, Greg James and Tim Westwood presented awards such as Best Presenter, Best Factual Programme and Best Studio Sound. Introducing: The long arm of the law on campus Daniel Webb, Campus PCSO

I [Dan] have been one of the University Police Community Support Officers for a year. I joined the constabulary after working for 4 years in the retail sector, as an Operations Manager, dealing with members of public and the issues they faced on a regular basis. I met a Neighbourhood Officer whilst working at the local Flight training centre, and was inspired to join the service after chatting to him. The University is also policed by PC Eddie Courts, who has been an officer for nearly 20 years, serving originally in Welwyn Hatfield as an intervention officer responding to urgent calls such as road traffic collisions , burglaries thefts and assaults. He transferred to Potters Bar as a Neighbourhood Officer, dealing with local issues. He also has experience in training and assessment of new officers. Eddie believes that all of his previous experience is being put to good use on campus . We have also been recently joined by PCSO Alex Smedley, who used to cover South Hatfield. Alex has always wanted to join the constabulary and has had some fantastic ideas for ways to engage with the students. Alex has worked for the police service before in a community safety role, and before that he worked as a flight attendant. Our duties are extremely varied, especially for such a diverse place as the University. Our main purpose is to ensure the safety and welfare of the students. We deal with taking crime reports, investigate crime, offer crime prevention advice, deal with issues on and off campus, and run beat

surgeries, where students can drop in and chat, ask questions and get their property security marked. What kind of things should students be contacting you about and how? The students are always welcome to contact us about any issues they experience on campus. We deal with immigration issues on behalf of International students and we can advise on driving rules and regulations. We answer a lot of ‘ what if...’ questions. Don’t hesitate to just stop us and ask, that’s why we’re here! If we are unable to help in our capacity as police officers and PCSOs, I guarantee we will know what direction to point you in. Do you have any ideas about how the student population and Hertfordshire policing can continue to work together? The University is unlike any other area anywhere in the county. We are really interested in doing things for the students, and for that we need to know what you want from us. We have a Police/ University of Hertfordshire Facebook site, hold regular police surgeries and spend most of our patrol time on campus, so don’t hesitate to approach us with ideas. Crime in Hatfield is low, but we cannot investigate crime that’s not reported to us. We take every report seriously and in the unlikely event that a student becomes a victim of crime, we urge them to report it to us. Your crime report could help us to catch those responsible and prevent others from being victims of crime . There has historically been some tensions between local residents and the student body, does this feature heavily in your job? Issues raised between local residents and students is something we deal with, happily not on a regular basis. In my experience a very large majority of students study hard and never cause any problems. In fact, I’ve even had residents approach me and tell me how well they get on with their student neighbours! In those rare instances where residents and students do clash, we work with both parties and the Deputy Dean of Students to resolve the issues. This works really well and we

very rarely see any repeat issues. What is the best way to contact you? Posters with our photos and contact details (phone numbers and email) are going up all over campus. We’ll be in College Lane LRC every Tuesday, and de Havilland every Wednesday. We also have a Facebook site for students (Just type

in University of Hertfordshire - Student Safety), which gives seasonal advice and tips on keeping safe. Very soon I’m hoping to run Online Police/Neighbourhood surgeries to connect with more students.

We have had the National Demonstration, and for the most part it was very nice and civilised. I have to say that I feel a huge disappointment because of the small minority who caused violence and trouble at the event.

We finally have our SoapBox’ers! I’m soo excited to see how 6 average student’s lives have been going so far at UH. Hopefully these honest accounts of what goes on around campus will really help the Students’ Union and UH get a greater understanding of how you guys need to be supported.

University of Hertfordshire students were not involved in any of the trouble.

Nica de Koenigswarter President

I have met with Stephen McPartland MP for Stevenage, and therefore one of our representative MPs from Hertfordshire County. Despite speaking with me for 40 mins he refused to vote in the best interests of students, and against tuition fees.

Thom Palser VP Communications & Media

So it’s been a busy few weeks, with lots of bits and bobs going on. From focus groups with mature and International students, to the ISA elections, National Demo, and first aid training. I’ve also been running some more student rep training sessions which have been going really well, I’m thrilled with the feedback I’ve had from the students in my groups so far!

Yasmin Bastow VP Academic Support & Campaigns

I had my graduation yesterday and just wanted to say a huge congratulations to all the 2010 graduates who’ve worked so hard to get to where they are today, and a massive thank you to Tim Wilson our Vice Chancellor, you will be missed next year! This week I have been holding focus groups for active universities. Im half way through the 6 meetings and so far they have been really productive! One of the main themes coming through is that some students would like the social sports to be held on the College Lane Campus for easier access. Another good idea has been a UH students version of weight watchers.

Szabo (4/12 for 51yds and 2 TDs) and runningback #28 Temi Oduyemi (159yds from 21 carries and 2 TDs). Despite fumbling the PAT attempt, this opening touch down gave the Hurricanes a wealth of confidence to build from, and after the defense came on to shut down a spirited UEA offense, the Hurricanes Offense returned with another scoring drive, this time led by QB #5 Joe Thompson (6/17 for 107yds and 2 TDs; 5yds from 1 carry) and rookie RB #29 Martin Nzenga(21yds from 6 carries). This pattern was repeated throughout a one sided half as the Hurricanes strode into the lead. The large lead going into the second half allowed Hertfordshire to blood some rookies, and the inexperience began to show. UEA seized the opportunity by playing a new boy of their own in #42 Carson, who quickly showed a talent nurtured playing for the Carrickfergus Knights, rushing through the Hurricanes D to a pair of touch downs. The Hurricanes’ defense quickly reasserted itself, however, and Carson’s running could not make up for the five turnovers achieved by the Hurricanes’ D. The offense picked up where they left off, however, completing a haul of seven touchdowns through the fantasy numbers of #3 Gareth Davies’ rushing (120yds from 6 carries and 1 TD). The Hurricanes offense moved the ball with confidence and variety, picking up an incredible 305 yards and three touchdowns rushing and 137 yards and four touchdowns passing. The Hurricanes passing attack showed similar success, with Quarterbacks #13 Szabo and #5 Thompson sharing four touchdowns equally between them. They connected with returning Hurricanes #89 Dom Husbands (6 catches for 82yds and 2 TD) and #25 Tom Roberts (2 catches for 15yds and 1 TD), as well as breakout rookie #83 Mark Flatman (3 catches for 41yds and 1 TD). Defensively, the Hurricanes picked up five turnovers, with interceptions coming from DBs #14 Chris Cowley, #7 Leslie Wilson as well as two from rookie LB #52 Izu “OJ” Ojika. Captain #54 Richard Ward led the tackling with 5 tackles and 3 assists, followed closely by rookie LBs #40 James Drake and #51 Kalaba “KC” Chibwe, with three tackles each.

Hurricanes Blow Away Pirates in Explosive Season Opener Lynne Pestle

The Hertfordshire Hurricanes opened their season last Sunday with a dominant display against the University of East Anglia Pirates, running out a 47 – 12 victory. The comprehensive offensive display was underpinned by solid defense that was only undone by an inspired second half performance from Pirates #42 Christopher Carson, who scored both Pirates touch downs. In a match-up in which both teams showed some opening game teething problems, it was the Hurricanes that started the stronger, scoring on their opening drive, led by returning QB #13 Alexandre
