Kieschnick Guest House Gets New Look Thanks to Eagle Scout CHRISTUS Spohn’s Kieschnick Guest House has provided family members whose loved ones are hospitalized at CHRISTUS Spohn Corpus Christi hospitals with a special, low cost, “homeaway-from-home” for over 30 years. Thanks to gifts from generous donors, family members who stay at the Kieschnick Guest House can have a safe place to rest, share a meal and converse with others who are having similar experiences, while still being close to their loved one. Most recently, Eagle Scout candidate, Brian Anthony Kostoch, from Troop 157 and his group of volunteers completed his Eagle Scout Service Project at the Kieschnick Guest House. The Eagle Scout Service Project gives a Boy Scout with a Life Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America the opportunity to demonstrate leadership while performing a project for the benefit of his community. Brian’s Eagle Scout Service Project was to transform an existing tired yard area at a local health care hospital house into a beautiful meditation and dining garden. Brian Kostoch proudly stands near the new weatherproof picnic table he After spending much time digging through oyster shells, helped place at the Kieschnick Guest House for his Eagle Scout Project. clay and tough roots, Brian and his team reached his goal of refurbishing the Kieschnick Guest House grounds by adding new mulch, numerous large plants and a brand new weatherproof picnic table for outdoor dining or simple rest and reflection. In addition, Brian and his team painted safety stripes to mark a step and ramp that is located near the back entrance of the house. CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and Kieschnick Guest House Coordinator, Jane Dykes, would like to publicly thank Brian and his team for choosing the Kieschnick Guest House to complete his Eagle Scout Service Project.

On November 27, 2018, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Foundation is proud to participate in #GivingTuesday. Each year on #GivingTuesday, non-profit organizations rally their supporters for a day of maximum impact. Following the retail events of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday provides an opportunity for people around the world to support what matters most to them and share that support with their social media networks. Our goal this #GivingTuesday is to raise enough money in a single day for the CHRISTUS Spohn Kieschnick

Guest House to provide low cost accommodations for family members of loved ones who are hospitalized in a CHRISTUS Spohn Health System facility – and we cannot achieve it without you. Through the generosity of individual donations, the Kieschnick Guest House is able to provide the comforts of home and an opportunity for families to remain together during hard times. Please consider joining the charge to reach our transformative goal on November 27th by making your gift online at christusspohnfoundation.org/ givingtuesday or over the phone at 361-881-3505.

Associate Giving Program Helps Fund New Equipment This summer, thanks to our Associates’ generosity and their Giving From Within (GFW) campaign, they made two significant purchases possible for the Alice and Shoreline hospitals. In Alice, the security operations team received a new E-Z-GO golf car to help patrol and secure multiple parking lots. The new gas powered vehicle allows the security team to respond to areas around the campus quickly and with ease. At CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline, two LUCAS 3.0 Chest Compression System devices were purchased for the Emergency Department. This life-saving device is designed to help improve outcomes of sudden cardiac arrest patients by delivering automatic and consistent, high-quality chest compressions even when doctors are on the move. CHRISTUS Spohn Associates provide high-level clinical care to our patients and generously support the health system financially through the GFW Fundraising Campaign. The campaign is an opportunity for Associates to make a personal, meaningful gift in support of state-ofthe-art equipment purchases, hospital updates, health education courses for Associates and even clothing for patients who have had a catastrophe and need help. Our Associates truly extend our mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in meaningful ways for which we are very grateful.

Thankful for You As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I have been thinking about how special CHRISTUS Spohn is to me, and reflecting on the things in life I am most thankful for – and I am especially grateful for all of you, our beloved donors. You do more than partner with us to strengthen CHRISTUS Spohn’s healing mission…you save lives. We can’t think of anything more deserving of gratitude than that. So for all the people whose lives are saved, whose health and outlook is improved, or whose loved ones recover, we sincerely thank you. I am thankful that construction of South Texas’ premier medical center on our Shoreline campus is nearing completion. Our new ten-story tower will house the region’s largest emergency department, Level II Trauma Center, two new Interventional Radiology Suites that will include state-of-the-art equipment, educational classrooms for our residents in our Residency programs, and a great Physical Rehabilitation floor.

I am also grateful for the great men and women of CHRISTUS Spohn Health System. It is because of the outstanding physicians, nurses, Associates, volunteers and hospital leadership that we are able to provide high-quality care to our patients each and every day. None of this would be possible without you, our community. We extend sincere thanks to you who Bonner, support our work. It is through your VPKaren for Philanthropy giving spirit that CHRISTUS Spohn’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, has remained the same for more than a century and we have been able to continue our service to South Texans. Thank you and God bless you and your family this holiday season.

Life of Dr. Arthur Spohn, Medical Pioneer and Innovative Physician, Explored in New Biography The new biography from the Texas A&M University Press, Dr. Arthur Spohn: Surgeon, Inventor, and Texas Medical Pioneer, is the first comprehensive biography of Dr. Arthur Spohn who founded the first hospital in Corpus Christi in 1905. Authors Jane Clements Monday, Frances Brannen Vick and Charles W. Monday Jr., MD, illuminate the remarkable nineteenth-century story of a trailblazing physician who helped to modernize the practice of medicine in Texas. Dr. Spohn was unusually innovative for the time and exceptionally dedicated to improving medical care. Among his many surgical innovations was the development of a specialized rubber tourniquet for “bloodless operations,” later adopted as a field instrument by militaries throughout the world. To this day, he holds the world record for the removal of the largest tumor—328 pounds—from a patient who fully recovered. Recognizing the need for modern medical care in South Texas, Dr. Spohn, with the help of his wife, Sarah Kenedy Spohn and the King and Kleberg families, raised funds to open the first hospital in Corpus Christi. Today, his name and institutional legacy live on in the region through the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, the largest hospital system in South Texas. “We are honored that these wonderful authors have chosen to research and shed more light on the life of Dr. Fall 2018

Spohn,” said Karen Bonner, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Vice President for Philanthropy. “His legacy has touched so many of our lives and I’m sure our community will enjoy learning more about his life and impact.” This biography of a medical pioneer recreates for readers the medical, regional, and family worlds in which Spohn moved, making it an important contribution not only to the history of South Texas but also to the history of modern medicine. The Dr. Arthur Spohn book is available just in time for Christmas! Purchase a copy of this biography as a gift for a loved one by contacting the Foundation by phone at 361-881-3505 or by email at christusspohnfoundation@ christushealth.org

Hospital Corpus Christi – Shoreline and Andrew Gilbert, Project Manager at CBRE and ask questions regarding the construction progress. The members were excited to hear about and see the new chapel, ICU rooms, trauma bays and emergency room center.
