2016 REPORT ON GIVING TO OUR BENEFACTORS
The Monumental Impact of Your Gifts
“ Our PATH Forward — Spohn’s $335 million transformation of health care in South Texas — made great strides in 2016 and we are excited about the future of our mission and ministry.” Dear Champions of Care, I am proud to serve you as Chair of the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation Board of Directors. CHRISTUS Spohn’s mission, values and vision align NANCY BEAUCHAMP with mine, and it’s amazing to see the dramatic difference that our gifts are making right here in the Coastal Bend for the residents of our entire community. Our PATH Forward — Spohn’s $335 million transformation of health care in South Texas — made great strides in 2016, and we are excited about the future of our mission and ministry across South Texas. People & Actions Transforming Healthcare will provide the very best in advanced
technology, innovative facilities and the latest medical practices to better serve each of Spohn’s patients and their families. One cornerstone of Our PATH is the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Family Health Center, which is open and serving as a medical home base of care for thousands of patients. The Garcia Family Health Center serves as a beacon of hope for those battling chronic diseases and conditions, providing accessible, coordinated care whenever it’s needed. The other major cornerstone is the transformation of the Shoreline campus, which currently houses the only Level II Trauma Center in South Texas and will become the tertiary referral center for the Coastal Bend. Construction is moving quickly and it’s exciting to see the future of our health care ministry taking shape right before our eyes. Thank you for your support of CHRISTUS Spohn and thank you for helping extend our healing legacy through your monumental gifts.
“ You are among an exceptional group of individuals committed to ensuring that all South Texans receive the best health care for themselves and their loved ones.” Dear Friends and Benefactors, As Vice President for Philanthropy with the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation, it is an honor to recognize the wonderful and caring people, companies and foundations listed in the pages of our 2016 Annual Report on Giving. KAREN BONNER You are among an exceptional group of individuals committed to ensuring that all South Texans receive the best health care for themselves and their loved ones. Please know how honored we are when you choose to make a gift to the CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation. Every gift you make toward our health care mission is special and important, and helps Spohn extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ each and every day.
Your gifts provide invaluable support for advanced technologies, programs and facilities that ensure that you and your loved ones who rely on Spohn have at your disposal the most innovative and respected health care, provided in a caring and compasstionate setting. It is a privilege to work with the finest surgeons, physicians, nurses and specialists in South Texas. It also is an honor to work with our chaplains and Spiritual Care Department, who extend their own healing touch to those who seek comfort in times of their greatest need. You, our generous benefactors, also are a vital part of our healing ministry, helping Spohn continue our commitment to excellence. That commitment has remained at the forefront of our mission for more than a century and that will never change. Thank you, and God bless each of you!

CHRISTUS Spohn’s volunteers making a difference.

HRISTUS Spohn’s volunteers are a vital component of our Health System’s mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ across South Texas. Not only do they provide comfort to patients and help them in times of great need, the men and women in the purple vests do it with a smile and a caring touch. Pat Rimar and her daughter, Terry Sherman, are two of those Spohn volunteers who make a difference each day to fulfill our healing ministry. Pat, a volunteer at the Shoreline campus, and “ The Lord tells us to serve one another. That’s just the way we look at what we do for others,” says Pat. Terry, who volunteers at the campus in Beeville, say they owe their service to another longtime volunteer. Frances McQuay, Pat’s mother, volunteered with Spohn hospitals in the 1950s, says Pat. “She was a Pink Lady and went around pushing a cart with all sorts of amenities, asking if folks needed anything. She also was there to just talk to people and see how they were doing. She passed along being a family of service to others who were in need, and that’s something that just stuck with us,” says Pat. Pat, who brings a background in banking to her role at the Shoreline campus, handles deposits in the hospital’s gift shop and is the volunteer treasurer. “Volunteering with Spohn has been enjoyable because of the impact it brings. It allows you to do something worthwhile and also allows you to make lots of friends,” says Pat. Terry agreed with her mother’s sentiment, especially because she volunteers at a smaller campus. “It’s really been a great way to get to know people in the community,” says Terry. “Obviously, Beeville isn’t as big as Corpus Christi, but I’ve gotten to know lots of people from different backgrounds through volunteering at the hospital.” “Terry does everything, really,” says Gina Cunningham, Coordinator of Volunteer Services at the Shoreline and Beeville campuses. “She’s the only nursing unit volunteer at CHRISTUS Spohn-Beeville. She isn’t one to brag, but she’s very proactive and takes her volunteering experience to heart every day. She always goes above and beyond because that’s just how she is. We’re lucky to have both Pat and Terry.” Pat and Terry said they believe they are the lucky ones. They also believe in making the most of their time spent at each Spohn campus. ■ Pat Rimar and her daughter Terry Sherman.

The best and most generous people anywhere work at CHRISTUS Spohn. They are dedicated to the patients we are privileged to serve and many selflessly give back to CHRISTUS Spohn through the GIVING FROM WITHIN associate campaign, raising almost a million dollars. Associates can choose an area to support that is meaningful to them such as The Sister Margaret Mannion Helping Hands Fund, Cancer Care or projects at their hospital campus.

Your Guide to Giving WHY IS YOUR SUPPORT IMPORTANT?
From its humble beginnings in 1905 as Spohn Sanitarium on Corpus Christi’s North Beach, CHRISTUS Spohn Health System has emerged as the healthcare leader in South Texas. Today, our physicians, nurses and specialists continue the legacy established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and Dr. Arthur E. Spohn by providing the most advanced, compassionate care for our entire community. While healthcare has changed during our more than a century of serving the Coastal Bend, our commitment to extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ remains resolute to the heart of our mission in our 12-county service area. The CHRISTUS Spohn Foundation relies upon the support of our generous benefactors to help us continue to meet the expectations of individuals who look to us for the best in medical care for themselves and their families. The Foundation raises funds that provide equipment, education, improved and new facilities and new programs in our South Texas area of care. We are a 501(c) (3) nonprofit. All gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
