In today's gospel passage Jesus taught us that He is a faithful God, always by our side, even in the most difficult situations of life. Jesus also appears by our side when the wind blows against us; when we are brokenhearted, in the darkest hours of our lives,when our boat is close to collapse. It is then that He comes to us and talks to us. He says: “Take courage,it is I; do not be afraid.”

But the gospel passage also presents, through Peter's personality, two aspects of human nature. In it, Peter showed us how faith can make us able to perform actions that our human weakness has not even imagined. It is a clear example of how we human beings can be strong when we trust in the Lord, but very weak if we deposit our trust in our own strengths and resources. Peter believed for an instant, but a second later he doubted. For a moment, Peter perceived himself as indestructible, only to become immediately after a person consumed by fear.

For centuries, Scripture scholars have seen today's passage as the Church in the world. On one hand, the sea represents an outraged world, with all its violence and huge temptations trying to eat us alive. On the other hand, Peter, and we Christians with him, are the Church. A Church that perseveres with all our struggles, with all our anguishes, with all our weaknesses; bottom line, a Church that struggles with all our human failures, but walks always through Christ. St. Augustine used to invite his faithful to hang on to the Church, to the rock who protects us against the strong wind, the storm, the flood, and against all worldly temptations.

En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús nos enseña que Él es un Dios fiel que está siempre presente a nuestro lado, aun en las más difíciles circunstancias de nuestra vida. Jesús aparece también junto a nosotros cuando el viento sopla en contra, cuando estamos despedazados, en la hora más obscura de nuestras vidas, cuando nuestra barca parece naufragar. Es entonces que el viene hacia nosotros y nos dice "Animo,no teman,¡soy yo!”

Pedro mismo nos muestra hoy dos caras de la naturaleza humana. Con su acción, él nos enseña que a través de nuestra fe somos capaz de lograr lo que nuestra debilidad humana nunca sería capaz de realizar Por un momento el cree, pero al siguiente duda; por un momento Pedro se siente indestructible, al siguiente está lleno de miedo Es esta una muestra de que los humanos somos fuertes cuando nos apoyamos en Dios, pero muy débiles si confiamos solo en nuestras fuerzas.

Los estudiosos de la sagrada escritura han visto en este pasaje al mundo y a la Iglesia. Por un lado, el mar representa a un mundo embravecido, con toda su furia y grandes tentaciones que amenazan con tragarnos vivos. Por otro lado, Pedro, y nosotros con él, somos la Iglesia.La Iglesia que persevera, con todas nuestras fallas, con todas nuestras debilidades; en resumen, con toda nuestra humanidad luchando siempre por caminar hacia Cristo San Agustín acostumbraba a invitar a sus fieles a sujetarse a la Iglesia, a la roca firme que es fuerte contra viento, tormenta, torrentes; contra todas las tentaciones de este mundo.

Trong bài Tin Mừng hôm nay Chúa dạy chúng ta rằng Ngài là một Thiên Chúa trung tín, luôn ở bên cạnh chúng ta, ngay cả những lúc khó khăn nhất của cuộc đời. Chúa luôn hiện diện bên ta lúc phong ba,bão táp; khi chúng ta tan nát cõi lòng, trong những giờ phút đen tối nhất của cuộc đời, khi con thuyền đời của chúng ta gần chìm. Chính vào giờ phút đó thì Ngài đến với chúng ta và nói với chúng ta rằng: “Hãy can đảm lên, Thầy đây; đừng sợ.”

Nhưng bài Tin Mừng,qua nhân cách của Thánh Phêrô, cũng nói lên hai khía cạnh về bản chất tự nhiên của con người. Qua đó, Thánh Phêrô cho chúng ta thấy là đức tin có thể làm chúng ta có khả năng thực hiện những điều mà xem ra sự yếu đuối, sự giới hạn của con người không thể tưởng tượng được. Rõ ràng là khi chúng ta tín thác vào Chúa, con người có thể trở nên mạnh mẽ, ngược lại sẽ rất yếu đuối nếu chúng ta tự tin vào sức mạnh và nguồn lực của riêng mình. Quả là thánh Phêrô đã tin, nhưng rồi ngài lại nghi ngờ. Chính cái giây phút thánh nhân nhận ra mình không thể chìm, thì ngay lúc ấy ngài hoảng sợ.

Qua nhiều thế kỷ, các học giả kinh thánh đã cho rằng đoạn Tin Mừng hôm nay nói về Giáo hội trần thế. Một mặt, biển tượng trưng cho một thế giới cuồng loạn, với bao nhiêu bạo lực và đầycám dỗ như muốn ăn tươi nuốt sống chúng ta. Mặt khác, Thánh Phêrô và những tín hữu theo ngài là Giáo hội. Một Giáo hội kiên tâm bền chí trong mọi thử thách, cùng với những đau thương phải chịu, cùng với sự yếu đuối của con người; điểm chính yếu là một Giáo hội chiến đấu với tất cả sự thiếu xót bất toàn của con người, như luôn đồng hành với Chúa Kitô Thánh Augustino đã khuyên các tín hữu hãy bám chặt vào Giáo hội, tảng đá bảo vệ chúng ta chống lại phong ba,bão táp,lụt lội và mọi cám dỗ của thế gian.
