Today’sdemands.readings are meant to teach us that the choices we are making now have everlasting consequences. They are also a reminder of our duty to share our goods with the poor. The down side of the riches is that they can lead us to forget about God, and everyone else, except ourselves. If we do not learn the lesson, we will forever be in danger of destroying human beings, the most important creature in creation, while our selfishness will be dressed in purple garments and fine linen.
We pray that the death penalty, which attacks the dignity of the human person, may be legally abolished in every country.

St. Luke’s gospel, the gospel of God’s compassion, the gospel of the lowly being raised up, challenges us with the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. The parable, dressed with blindness, isolation, and faithlessness, is meant to help us all recognize the responsibilities our position in life

For the abolition of the death penalty
Very often, we walk by the Lazarus of the world without even really seeing them. Our possessions, and the hard work it takes for us to obtain them, can easily render us blind. Are we inclined to believe that we do not see them? Do our eyes glance elsewhere so we do not meet their eyes? Today, let us ask the Lord to help us to get beyond the blindness inflicted by our possessions. Let us ask Him for wisdom to understand that we do not need somebody to rise from the dead, because we already have someone who has risen from the dead. He has called us to have faith in Him, instead of faith in our possessions. His name is Jesus, and He is the Lord!

En el evangelio de los humildes que son enaltecidos, San Lucas, con la historia de Lázaro y el hombre rico, cierra hoy el ciclo de parábolas del evangelio social. La parábola, salpicada con ceguera, marginación, y falta de fe, nos invita a reconocer las responsabilidades que nuestra situación en la vida demanda de nosotros.Laslecturas de hoy intentan enseñarnos cómo nuestras acciones cotidianas tendrán consecuencias eternas. Son también un recordatorio acerca de nuestro deber a compartir con el pobre. Lo malo de las riquezas es que nos llevan a olvidarnos de Dios y de todos los demás, excepto de nosotros mismos. Si no aprendemos la lección, estaremos siempre en peligro de destruir a nuestros semejantes, las creaturas más importantes de la creación, mientras que nuestro egoísmo se vestirá de purpura y telas finas.
Muy a menudo nos encontramos con los Lazaros del mundo, sin siquiera voltear a verlos. Nuestras posesiones, y el trabajo difícil que nos han costado, pueden fácilmente dejarnos ciegos. ¿Pretendemos acaso que no los hemos visto? ¿Desviamos nuestra vista a otro lado para no verlos a los ojos? Pidamos hoy al Señor poder quitarnos la venda de nuestras posesiones. Supliquemos sabiduría para entender que no necesitamos que alguien resucite, porque tenemos ya a alguien que ha resucitado de entre los muertos, nos ha llamado a tener fe en Él, y no en nuestrasposesiones. Su nombre es Jesús, y ¡Él es El Señor!

Những của cải mà chúng ta phải cực nhọc hằng ngày để có được đã che mắt biến chúng ta thành những người mù rồi. Có phải chúng ta giả vờ là chúng ta không nhìn thấy họ không? Có phải đôi mắt của chúng ta liếc nhìn nơi khác để khỏi phải nhìn thấy đôi mắt của họ chăng? Ước chi ngày hôm nay, chúng ta cùng cầu xin Chúa giúp chúng ta vượt qua sự mù lòa che khuất bởi tiền tài của chúng ta. Hãy cầu xin cùng Ngài ban cho sự khôn ngoan để hiểu biết rằng chính Ngài đã chiến thắng tử thần và đã sống lại từ cõi chết. Tin tưởng vào Ngài thay vì tin vào tiền tài vật chất. Ngài là Đức Giêsu, và Ngài là Thiên Chúa.
