In today’s gospel, St. Luke reaffirms for us one of the more important teachings of the OT. “You cannot serve both God and mammon” says the evangelist. We must serve the Lord fully, with all our heart, without hesitation, and without any commitments to other interests. But the word he used has a limited meaning for this our modern society. The power of the original expression: “You cannot serve God and mammon” in the Aramaic language is completely lost in our modern English expression. Mammon means much more than money; it means a treasure saved in the bank. Mammon means the object in which we are trusting to obtain power and recognition. Mammon fully excludes even the slightest consideration about God and our neighbor.

No servant can serve two masters!
Mammon can be easily transformed into an idol, a golden calf as the one the Israelites worshiped in the desert. And this idol is sustained by the injustice that chooses to exploit the many for the benefit of the few. On the one hand, to serve mammon means to manipulate even God, and to use Him for the benefit of our needs and desires. We continually pray for our economic well being, and any material or economic progress will be considered the result of God’s blessings showered over our lives. The risk here is to transform God into the servant of what we worship. To serve mammon means to live in loneliness and self-sufficiency.
On the other hand, to serve God instead of mammon means to be concerned with the wellbeing of our brothers and sisters, and to practice reciprocity. To serve God means to use our wealth and riches for the benefit of those in need. How can we Christians, followers of a humble carpenter from Nazareth, be so indifferent before all the needs around us?

Por otro lado, si decidimos servir a Dios no al “mammon,” significara estar siempre preocupados por el bienestar del prójimo, y practicar la reciprocidad. Significa usar nuestras riquezas para beneficio de los necesitados. ¿Cómo es entonces que nosotros católicos, seguidores de un humilde carpintero de Nazaret, podemos ser indiferentes ante tanto sufrimiento?

Estas son las intenciones de oración del Papa Francisco
En el Evangelio de hoy, San Lucas reafirma una de las más importantes enseñanzas del AT. “No pueden ustedes servir a Dios y al dinero,” dice el evangelista. Como cristianos debemos servir a Dios por sobre todas las cosas, con todo nuestro corazón, sin distracción o interferencia alguna. Pero la palabra utilizada en el evangelio tiene un significado limitado en estos tiempos. El lenguaje original utiliza en vez de dinero la palabra aramea “mammon,” que no existe en nuestro lenguaje moderno. “Mammon” significa mucho más que dinero; significa un tesoro celosamente guardado. “Mammon” significa aquel objeto en el que confiamos para obtener poder y reconocimiento. “Mammon” excluye aun la mínima creencia o respeto por Dios, y también por el prójimo. “Mammon” puede fácilmente transformarse en un ídolo, un becerro de oro a quien adorar.
“Mammon” es además soportado por la injusticia, aquella que justifica explotar las mayorías, en beneficio de los poderosos. Por un lado, el servir a “mammón” significa querer manipular hasta a Dios mismo, y usarlo en beneficio de nuestros deseos. Debemos entonces tener cuidado cuando rezamos continuamente por nuestro bienestar económico, y cuando nuestro progreso material es considerado como el resultado de las bendiciones que el Señor derrama en nuestras vidas. El riesgo aquí es considerar a Dios como una herramienta de hacer dinero. Servir a “mammón” significara siempre sentirnos autosuficientes, y vivir en soledad.

Vật chất tiền tài có thể dễ dàng chuyển đổi thành các thần tượng như là tượng bò vàng người Do Thái đã từng thờ phượng trong sa mạc xưa kia. Và những thần tượng này tồn tại bởi những chọn lựa bất chính Để mang lại rất nhiều lợi ích cho một ít cá nhân. Với cách nhìn này thờ tiền bạc có nghĩa là lạm dụng chính Thiên Chúa để phục vụ quyền lợi, những tiện ích, và những thèm khát của con người. Chúng ta vẫn đang cầu nguyện cho nền kinh tế tiếp tục vững mạnh. Cầu cho kinh tế đất nước tiếp tục phát triển như là kết quả do Chúa chúc phúc, tuôn đổ muôn ơn xuống trên đời sống của chúng ta. Điều nguy hiểm là chúng ta đang biến Chúa thành nô lệ cho những gì chúng ta đang thờ lạy. Thờ lạy vật chất tiền bạc có nghĩa là sống cao ngạo và đơn độc.

Bài Phúc Âm hôm nay, thánh Luca xác định lại với chúng ta một điều luật quan trọng đó là “Ngươi không thể tôn thờ vừa Thiên chúa vừa tiền bạc được!”. Phúc âm kêu gọi chúng ta phụng thờ Thiên chúa cách trọn vẹn với hết tâm hồn, không ngần ngại không tính toán. Những từ ngữ của thánh Luca dùng có ý nghĩa hạn chế đối với xã hội ngày nay. Câu văn nguyên thủy của thánh nhân dùng là “Ngươi không thể làm tôi Thiên Chúa mà lại làm tôitiền của được” trong ngôn ngữ Ả Rập hoàn toàn không thích nghi với ngôn ngữ Tiếng Anh hiện đại. Danh từ vật chất tiền bạc có nhiều ý nghĩa bao quát hơn là đồng tiền. Tiền bạc bao hàm cả tiền có được trong ngân hàng, chúng còn bao hàm cả những tài sản của chìm của nổi. Có thể nói chúng bao trùm toàn thể mọi thứ ngoại trừ những gì thuộc về thiên chúa và tha nhân của chúng ta.
