Twentieth Sunday In Ordinary Time
The Holy Father’s August Prayer Intentions
St. Luke presents the resurrected Jesus as the master that will come again at the end of times covered in His glory. And we, as Christ followers, will be the servants awaiting His arrival. Christ’s second coming will probably be something that we, almost certainly, will not experience. The idea of being prepared is therefore, as the readings explain it, our desire to be vigilant, and to maintain our candles lighted with Christ’s love, and His divine justice. This is an invitation to be constantly awaiting our master’s return, because, what is 100% true is the fact that anyone of us will experience our own personal encounter with the Lord at the moment of our death. It is for this moment that we all need to be prepared for. The question is shifted now to: how could we be prepared for a personal encounter with the Lord at the end of our own times? Today’s gospel contains some suggestions. First of all, it contains an invitation to be generous, an invitation to store in heaven a treasure that lasts forever. This will be a treasure well beyond the thief’s reach, a treasure that cannot be devoured by the mot.

On a Church level, to be prepared means to continually fulfill what Jesus has entrusted to us. It means to preach and to teach the gospel’s message, in time and out of time. It also means not to surrender the moral principles that we have received through Jesus’ word and ministry, even when those principles are being strongly questioned by our modern society. It also means to work unceasingly for justice and peace, without quitting our commitment to work for the kingdom of God. On a personal level, to be a Christian demand working for the establishment of God’s kingdom here on earth. To be prepared means to work against poverty and oppression. To be prepared demands an extra effort to fight against hatred and all the barriers that could divide us. To be prepared means to work for everlasting peace, among our families, in society, and among all nations. To be prepared demands abandoning our selfishness, and respecting human dignity in all its faces. To be prepared means to work tirelessly against injustice, even when all our efforts seem to be lost in the deepness of suffering, indifference, or human cynicism. How I wish it were already blazing!
Evangelio significa “Buena Nueva,” El mensaje evangélico prende fuego en nuestros corazones, algunas veces causa conflictos en nuestras vidas, o se convierte en una incómoda piedra en el zapato. En esta nuestra sociedad moderna, el evangelio no siempre es bien recibido, y continuamente enfrenta hostilidad y rechazo. El mensaje evangélico demanda continuamente un compromiso de vida que no todos están dispuestos a aceptar, lo que es más, algunos de sus mensajes encuentran fuerte oposición.Enelpasaje de hoy podemos aprender cómo el ser discípulo de Jesús demanda una lealtad más allá de cualquier alianza terrenal. De acuerdo a la lectura, el ser un discípulo cristiano demanda una decisión radical que algunos estarán dispuestos a aceptar, pero que otros rechazarán. El mensaje de hoy grita que Jesús no vino solo a ofrecer un lindo y cálido mensaje, o a traer una paz que nos permitiera solo gozar de una cómoda prosperidad. Por el contrario, el pasaje de hoy nos enseña como el evangelio pone delante de nosotros un reto que a veces hasta nos divide: “He venido a traer fuego a la tierra, ¡y cuanto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo!”Jesúsvino a salvar a este nuestro mundo que estaba perdido, pero sus acciones demandan decisiones que todo ser humano debe tomar. Aquel que no encuentre atractivo el seguir a Jesús, aquel que solo actúe con disgusto o resentimiento, aquel que evita o decide no incendiar su corazón con el reto de imitar a Cristo, esa persona se habrá entonces destruido a sí misma. Pidamos hoy humildad y sabiduría para ser siempre capaces de exclamar con el salmista: “¡Señor, date prisa en socorrerme!” Que con su auxilio y misericordia logremos siempre ¡Incendiar nuestros corazones con el fuego de su amor! ¡Cuanto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo!
