St. Luke’s gospel speaks today about ten lepers being cured by Jesus. All of them were people living a very marginal existence on the very fringes of ancient Middle East society, and Jesus was their last chance for healing. The lepers even had an incipient faith in Jesus. By calling Him “Master,” they were placing themselves in a position of subordination to Him; what they were really longing for was a merciful visitation from God. Master, have pity on us! They were crying for help. It is the same cry that we express in our penitential rite at the beginning of mass when we say: Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy!
Jesus instructed the lepers to go and present themselves before the priests. These men would have every reason to be skeptical of Jesus’ instructions, but they had faith in Him. “As they went, they were made clean.” It was the fact of their going, in faith and obedience to Jesus, which was “the catalyst” in their healing. But the gospel also reveals a demolishing truth: after the healing, only one leper returned to give thanks. It is again, according to Luke’s gospel, a foreigner, a Samaritan, a leper, the one who demonstrates the proper behavior before God, the one who returned and worshiped in humility, honesty, and truth.
In a biblical image of conversion, the Samaritan leper is embarked on a radically new direction. His behavior is an indication of how a physical healing in the gospels is indicative of a more profound spiritual healing. By then, he was seeing Jesus as the focal point of his pilgrimage. And the other lepers did not return. Experiencing thanks requires going beyond what is expected of us. Genuine gratitude and thanksgiving should simply arise from our soul and disperse itself all over. Today, let us turn to Jesus’ presence in the sacrament of the Eucharist, and hear Him express: “Stand up and go on your way, your faith has saved you!”

Recemos para que la Iglesia, fiel al Evangelio y valiente en su anuncio, viva cada vez más la sinodalidad y sea un lugar de solidaridad, fraternidad y acogida.
San Lucas narra hoy en su Evangelio la historia de diez leprosos curados por Jesús. Todos ellos vivían una vida de marginación y rechazo en la sociedad del medio oriente, y Jesús era su última esperanza de sanación. Los leprosos tenían al menos una fe incipiente en que Jesús podía curarlos. Al llamarlo “Maestro” estaban poniéndose en una posición subordinada ante Él; pero lo que verdaderamente deseaban en sus corazones era una visita misericordiosa de parte del altísimo. “¡Jesús, maestro, ten compasión de nosotros!” era su grito de angustia pidiendo ayuda. Es esta la misma súplica que expresamos al inicio de la Misa en el rito penitencial: “¡Señor, ten piedad de nosotros; Cristo; ten piedad de nosotros; ¡Señor, ten piedad de nosotros!”
Jesús instruye a los leprosos a ir, y presentarse delante del sacerdote. Aquellos hombres podían haber tenido todas las dudas del mundo acerca de las instrucciones recibidas; pero en cambio, ¡escogieron tener fe en El! “Mientras iban de
camino, quedaron limpios de la lepra.” Fue el hecho de haber escogido ir, en fe y obediencia a Jesús, el detonador de su sanación. Pero el Evangelio revela también una demoledora verdad: después de su curación, ¡solo uno regresa agradecido! Y es otra vez, de acuerdo a San Lucas, un forastero Samaritano leproso, aquel que muestra el comportamiento correcto delante de Dios; el único que regresa para alabar a Dios en humildad, honestidad, y verdad. Es en esta imagen Bíblica de conversión pura que aquel leproso escoge embarcarse en un rumbo totalmente nuevo. Su comportamiento es una señal de cómo cualquier sanación física en el evangelio es solo una señal visible de una sanación interior mucho más profunda. El leproso identificaba ahora a Jesús como el destino de su peregrinación terrenal; por otro lado, los demás leprosos ni siquiera se tomaron la molestia de regresar. Un corazón puro estará siempre dispuesto a experimentar agradecimiento. Gratitud y acción de gracias nacen necesariamente de un corazón humilde y agradecido, abierto a contagiar siempre nuestro derredor. Será entonces que escucharemos las mismas palabras que Jesús le dijo al samaritano: “Levántate y vete, ¡tu fe te ha salvado!”

Lạy thầy Giêsu, xin thương xót chúng tôi!
Phúc âm theo thánh Luca hôm nay kể câu chuyện về mười người phong cùi được Chúa Giêsu chữa lành. Họ là những người sống vất vưởng và bị bỏ rơi, bị xa lánh trong xã hội Trung Đông thời bấy giờ. Và chúa Giêsu là cơ hội cuối cùng để họ được chữa lành. Những người phong cùi đã hết lòng tin tưởng vào Đức Giêsu, họ gọi Ngài “Lạy thầy”. Họ đã sấp mình xuống dưới chân Ngài. Họ hết lòng cầu khẩn van xin đến lòng thương xót của chúa. Xin thầy hãy thương xót chúng tôi. Họ cầu khẩn xin cứu giúp. Chúng ta cũng cầu khẩn như thế trong nghi thức đầu mỗi thánh lễ, Xin chúa thương xót chúng con, xin chúa Kitô thương xót chúng con, xin chúa thương xót chúng con.
Đức Giêsu bảo các người bị bệnh phong cùi đi đến trình diện với các thầy tư tế. Những người cùi có nhiều lý do để nghi ngờ về điều Đức Giêsu vừa bảo họ, nhưng họ tin tưởng vào Ngài. “và đang khi họ đi thì họ được lành bệnh”. Thật khi họ tin và vâng lời Đức Giêsu. Quả là một một đức tin mạnh mẽ cho việc chữa lành của họ. Nhưng phúc âm cũng đã nêu lên một sự thật đáng buồn là sau khi nhận biết đã được chữa lành chỉ có một người phong cùi trở lại tạ ơn. Thể theo phúc âm thánh Luca anh ta là người ngoại kiều, người Samaritano, một người cùi, một người biết cư xử đúng đắn trước mặt Chúa. Người đã trở lại ca tụng Thiên Chúa trong khiêm tốn, chân thành và trung thật.
Trong hình ảnh của kinh thánh, người cùi Samaritano đã hướng đến một căn bản mới, góc nhìn mới. Cách hành xử của anh ấy cho thấy rằng, sự chữa lành về phần xác, trong phúc âm, lại là rõ nét hơn dẫn đến việc chữa lành phần tâm hồn. Nhờ vậy anh nhận ra Đức Giêsu là trọng tâm cuộc đời lữ thứ của mình. Và những người cùi khác đã không trở lại, cho chúng ta nghiệm ra rằng lòng biết ơn phải được tự nó dấy lên từ đáy tâm hồn. Phải chi hôm nay chúng ta cùng hướng lòng đến Chúa Giêsu đang hiện diện trong bí tích Thánh Thể, và lắng nghe Chúa phán dạy: “Hãy đứng dậy mà đi, Đức tin của con đã chữa con!”
