In this kickoff issue of CPC Life, let’s take stock of where we are individually, what we’re into corporately, and where we’re all headed this fall.

e all know that we are not supposed to find our identity in external things.

But if you ask me about myself, I’ll tell you I’m a wife, I’m a mom, and I work at CPC. Important things, yes. But we all know there is more to the story.

Several years ago, my family experienced a crisis, during which John Crosby met with us to offer wisdom and support. A couple of days later, I received a card from John. To be honest, I have no recollection of what it said other than this: The salutation read, “Beloved of God.” Those words went so deep into the core of who I am that ten years later, I still feel the emotion of that moment. John didn’t even use my name, but he named me in the most powerful way possible: Beloved of God. I began to wonder what my life would look like if I could just hold on to that and live as if I really believed it.

Beloved of God: When life feels scary and overwhelming, I am safe and provided for.

Beloved of God: When I fall into comparisons and self-criticism, I remember my value comes from how God sees me.

Beloved of God: When I am hurt or angry, remembering I am beloved allows me to expand with compassion and forgiveness. Because I am not the only beloved one.

When my children were small, I loved to hold them. They didn’t need a reason to curl up in my lap. I could literally hold them for hours because they were so beloved to me.

Sometimes when I long to go deeper into the truth of God’s love, I do the same thing. I close my eyes and imagine I am crawling up into His lap. I don’t need to say anything. In my mind’s eye, I lay my head on His shoulder and allow myself to experience His love. In those moments my soul experiences deep restoration. In that stillness, I realize that He longs for me to understand how wide and long and high and deep is His love for me (Ephesians 3:18). It changes everything.

Author and psychologist James Finley put it this way: The deepest form of my powerlessness is that I am absolutely powerless to be anything but infinitely loved by God. May you realize today your powerlessness in the face of the infinite love of God.

TELL US A BOUT YOUR JOURNE Y TO CPC. Over the past twelve years I’ve worked in churches with college students, young adults, and missions. I have a passion for helping churches figure out what it means to be the Body of Christ in the world, and I was very interested when I learned of CPC’s legacy of both outreach and leadership development. Plus the chance to work on the Lead Team with Sarah Norton, Mara Amiot, and David Hammond, and of course with John Crosby, was compelling!

For our family, I honestly wasn’t expecting for CPC to feel like a place where we’d say, “Oh, we can see ourselves here.” But when we hung out here for a visit with staff and lay people, we felt that the culture was a good fit. I knew it’d be exciting to be a part of.

And I wanted to be in a construction zone for a few years!

When we interviewed, I was surprised by how warm and friendly people were. Someone told me this was just Minnesota Nice, but hey, it’s still nice!

YOUR JOB DIDN’ T E X IS T BEFORE YOU CA ME .

HOW DID YOU FEEL A BOUT TH AT? That was the most exciting thing! I have to prove that I have value to the church and staff because they were functioning just fine before I got here! I’ll be working with Discipleship, Missions, Care, and Connections to create more cohesion among Adult

Ministries. For me, the beauty of a multi-generational church is the opportunity to see people grow in their faith from the time they are children all the way through adulthood. I know it doesn’t always happen that neatly, but we get to design systems in ministry that can accommodate and accomplish that. That is really fun for me to think about!

CA N YOU SH A RE A BIT A BOUT YOUR FA ITH S TORY? As a child my family was not regularly involved in church, but in junior high my brother and I got invited to play basketball for a church youth team. So even though we sort of ended up being suckered into going to youth group, we found good connections with people who cared for us and taught us about Jesus.

I started walking with Jesus and began leading in youth group and college ministry. I didn’t think I would go into vocational ministry, but as a college senior I was offered a ministry position after graduation. I thought I’d just do it for a couple years, enjoy the change of pace. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was called to minister in the church, and I’ve loved doing it ever since!

I

was kind of a party animal at Marquette University, and that became my identity. It turned toxic for me, and one April night in 2013 I overdrank and fell, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. I was rushed to the hospital, and doctors told my brother there was a good chance I wouldn’t come out of surgery alive. I woke up the next day paralyzed on the left side of my body.

In that Milwaukee hospital, my friends were told to leave the waiting room because there were just too many people—God had built this incredible army of support around me, and I was never alone. Laura Mulliken, who had been my Sunday school teacher at CPC, showed up immediately after my accident. Though I’d been lukewarm in my faith, when I was in a haze of drugs and painkillers, I just wanted Laura to sing “Amazing Grace” and the Sunday school songs I remembered.

I got through the surgery, and I was brought to the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in the Twin Cities. During intense, eighthour-a-day rehab, I began walking again. God was with me for each one of those steps. But I also was growing depressed. While I had all those friends behind me in the beginning, I was slowly becoming old news. People moved on, friends still partied. I was hoping I’d be some sort of model for them to slow down their lifestyle, but I wasn’t. I felt incredibly lonely.

When I completed rehab, suicide was, quite frankly, on my mind.

One book that fell into my hands (and I believe saved my life) is Man’s Search for Meaning by Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl. He wrote: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.” So I made the choice that I had to fully turn to Jesus. Growing up at CPC, Kyle Jackson shared with me this verse: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).

Here I was facing the greatest challenge of my life, and I was asked to consider it pure joy. How do I do that? I wondered.

Rehab lasted a year, and after that I went back to Marquette for a semester. But there were too many people expecting me to be “Eric the gregarious partier,” the one who didn’t care if he was hurting someone’s feelings. I realized that my identity as the big man on campus was fruitless. I didn’t have that identity anymore, because God was creating something new.

I had been on the law school track at Marquette because I was chasing after the money life. But when I decided to transfer to Whitworth University in Spokane, I reevaluated my path. I was a lazier student in high school but still got As and Bs. I never read a book in my English classes, but during my recovery I went back to read all those books I missed. And I realized, Hey, these are pretty good!

I’ve now changed my major to literature, and I’m going to be a high school teacher.

At Whitworth, I’m not the cool kid; I’m a wallflower in a lot of ways.

It’s been a humbling experience to see I can still succeed and enjoy this life without having a bottle of booze in my hand.

Though I’ve always had epilepsy, my injury has made it worse.

I hadn’t had a seizure for ten years prior to the accident, but now I have one a year.

I said to God, “Come on, just give me a break here!” I was so angry.

Laura shared 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 with me: “I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’”

This has transformed my life because even though I have so much anxiety about when I’m going to have another seizure, I know God is the glue holding my body together. No matter how broken I am either mentally or physically, I still have the cornerstone of Jesus in my life. He’s healing me day by day.

I had been a really good golfer, but after my accident I wasn’t able to do that anymore. So one thing I’ve been able to consider pure joy is biking. It has become a super meditative part of my life.

Doctors never saw it coming, but I just got done cycling from Seattle to Virginia Beach in August. It was an amazing time to thank Jesus for knitting me back together enough to be able to accomplish a feat like that. When doctors were cautious after my accident, my brother refused to believe I’d have any limitations in life. I think God used his voice to remind me there is always hope. Good things can still come of this.

During the long ride, God showed me that I can be too hard on myself. A few times I had to take a city bus to help get me out of some of the dangerous roads and to the outskirts. I would beat myself up over that; I felt I was cheating. That’s been a theme of my life, this struggle with perfectionism. But God showed me that I don’t need to be perfect. Because of His grace, I’m perfect in His eyes.

Even though it seemed like I was doing the trip for myself, the truth is I was really doing it because God wanted me to rejoice.

He wanted to show me He has given me these abilities. And I have enormous calves to show for it.

WHAT’S NE X T? Work will focus on the new Great Room restrooms and renovated balcony rooms, along with completion of a new stairwell. Once the stairwell is complete, the stairwell between Pathway Bookstore and the first floor bathrooms will be torn down in preparation for construction work of the Commons area.

WHAT ABOUT THE FIRE SIDE ROOM? We’re glad you asked! If you’ve been gone over the summer, you may be surprised to see that our former Fireside Room has been demolished. Current work involves digging out a basement, and our expansion will occur in this space. However, our renovation of Room 107 includes a lovely meeting space with a fireplace . . . so we will have a new Fireside Room completed this fall.

W E NEED A NEW NAME . . . & WE’RE ASKING FOR YOUR IDEAS! Our large expansion to the west (where our old Fireside Room was located) will be a flexible space for Sunday evening services, weddings and memorials, classes, and student gatherings. While it will have a stage, large windows to the west, and easy access to the kitchen and Commons, it will no longer have a fireplace.
