The A r t of I DENTI FICATION

H

ow do you identify the difference between a turtledove and a carrier pigeon, between a petunia and a snapdragon (or for me, between a plant and a weed!)? Usually we either enlist an expert who can tell us from experience, or we read a field guide to identify things that puzzle us.

Usually we’re just learning these differences for the fun of it.

But sometimes identifying the right choice can literally be life and death: Which of these mushrooms is delicious, and which one is poisonous? Get your field guide to identify!

That’s what we want to do this summer: Help one another identify the best path for your unique wiring.

This month we’ll start by identifying the path to grow in each of our personal relationships with God, because we’re not wired the same—we’re ALL different. Do you respond positively to this or that, grow better here or there, find life with your head or hands?

How do you identify your spiritual connection to God? Take the quiz on the next page to see where you land.

As we continue through the summer, we are going to continue the practice of identification. In July, what people can we identify in our neighborhoods to share life with? Then in August, what issues can we identify that impact our world for good and for bad, and how can we engage with them?

Look for a Field Guide each month this summer as we look to our Guide—and His Guidebook—to identify and seek a path that leads to an abundant life in Him.

I

feel like I’ve always had an interest in service. But I haven’t always done it, that’s for certain. The times I’ve actively served, I would think, That’s fun. I enjoyed that. Yet it didn’t really carry into my life any further. Not long after my wife, Michelle, and I became members of CPC, Rob Lund, co-worker and fellow CPCer, recommended the Lay Care ministry as something for me to get involved in. He wasn’t pushy about it, but he thought it would be a really good fit for me. And he was right! I went through training and began doing hospital visits in 2002. As a radiologist, hospital visitation has worked well for me—I’m comfortable with the sights, sounds, and smells of a hospital that a lot of people could find a little intimidating or even scary. And over the years, visiting those in the hospital has become a rhythm of my day.

A lot of service acts aren’t necessarily associated with faith. Someone who is a non-believer can visit someone in the hospital or make a meal or build a home. So I was trying to figure out what the difference has been for me, and something that’s been really impactful has been the prayers I’ve shared with those I visit. The act of actually praying with someone at the hospital completely changes the interactions that we have. Beforehand it’s just two people chatting about how you are feeling. But that time in prayer pulls everything together.

What am I really here for? To be a representative of Jesus and be present for that person, who might just need someone to listen to them. That’s where I’ve seen the difference—it’s the powerful, almost intimate interaction that you have with another person.

Honestly, prayer wasn’t something I was comfortable with at first. I grew up where the extent of our prayers would be saying the Lord’s Prayer at dinner and prayers at bed—but even so, they were rote prayers, nothing natural or spoken from my heart. If someone asked me to say a prayer before dinner, I would just panic and say, “God is great, God is good —something like that. I didn’t know what to do.

So visiting someone in the hospital was intimidating—but Lay Care Training gave me the tools. And then you just have to practice it.

Repeat it, keep doing it and doing it, and then it becomes easier. And it has. Used to be when it was time to visit I’d have to breathe deeply, catch my breath, and really work myself up for it. And now it’s just part of my day. It’s what I do now.

The book of James says that faith without works is dead. And I’ve thought about how faith and works really build off each other, support each other.

When I started going to services here, I had faith but it wasn’t a strong or deep faith. Yet I’ve found the more you get into a relationship with God, the more you study His Word and the more you start praying and having conversations with Him, you actually want to go out and serve. Not out of a sense of obligation or a sense of earning points—it’s just the response I now have to God’s grace to me.

Let God use the skills you already have, the interests you have to experience Him in a deeper way—it’s okay to do something you like to do! The hardest thing is the actual first step . . . but I encourage you to take it and see where it leads you.

I learned what a unique church CPC is in 2002 when I was working for World Vision and watched CPC members sponsor more kids in a single campaign than any church had ever done.

That drew my wife, Molly, and our kids to this community. Our early involvement at CPC profoundly shaped our ideas around loving our neighbor that ultimately culminated in a two-year move to Zambia. In recent years we have been involved in High School Ministry, local service opportunities, and various small groups. I look forward to serving on Session and supporting our outstanding staff as they lead us in this next exciting chapter of CPC’s life.

SCOTT PETERSON As

a baby, I was baptized at CPC. This church has continued to be a core part of my faith journey ever since. In recent years I have served as a deacon moderator, participated in men’s and couples’ small groups, helped organize Men’s Breakfasts, and led new member small groups. Across a lifetime, I have seen how God has worked wonderfully in this community, and I am eager to see what God has in store for CPC. My prayer is for wisdom and discernment as I offer my energy serving as an elder and that we as a church will faithfully advance God’s Kingdom.

DAWN LOCKLEAR My husband, Bruce,

and I have been attending CPC since 2009. Over the last several years I have served as a deacon, worked with the New Members’ class, baked for the Lay Care ministry, and my husband and I have recently become Marriage Mentors to engaged couples. I love the excitement and energy at CPC as we share God’s love with each other, our community, and our partners around the world. I am deeply honored and humbled to be serving as an elder next to an amazing team of pastors and leaders, and I pray for wisdom as we discern God’s plans for our next steps.

BECKY WALKER Our youngest daugh-

ter gets the credit for helping us choose CPC as our church home. She followed her best friend, we followed her, and we have been growing in our faith for seventeen years. I have so enjoyed serving as a deacon, leader of Moms of Teens, member of the YouthLink Board, host of a Wednesday night HSM group, and nursery volunteer. For ten years I was the CEO and President of TreeHouse, one of CPC’s Mission Partners, and through that I was blessed to work with CPC’s Mission staff. I am humbled and honored to serve this Christcentered, generous, and supportive church as an elder.
