Scary night in April: some VB residents woke in the wee hours of April 28 to find the swamp adjacent to the west side of Highway 59 ablaze.

Photos depict the scene at 4am and then the next morning as a helicopter drops water on hotspots. See story on page 14. Photo: Janie Gardner

Children’s Masquerade This year the Children’s Masquerade is on Saturday, July 16. We’ll get started. That gives you a couple of weeks to come up with a fun costume. Assuming we’re organized enough, we’ll have prizes for Best Original costume, Best VBthemed and Best Group costume. The Masquerade isn’t just for kids either so we’ll also award a prize (and lots of glory) for the Best Adult costume. After the costume parade, we’ll have a musical performance by children’s entertainers Aaron and Kim Burnett. So come on down to the Village Green and check the show out. I’m sure you’ll have fun and maybe even learn a new dance move or two. Kristie and Doug Pollard

President’s Message

Welcome back to VB! Volunteers have been working hard over the winter to help make the summer fun for you and your family. We kept some things the same, changed some things back to the way they used to be done and came up with a few new ways of doing things. We’ve kept the following the same: Same fun activities and events that we’ve been enjoying for decades. $5 day passes are available so that a non-VB Club member can participate in a day’s worth of activities. We’ve changed some things back to the way they used to be: Back to a 6 week calendar for activities starting on July 4th and ending on August 14th. The season ends around the same date as last summer but starts a week later to allow for all kids to be done school and for the membership drive to happen on the long weekend. We came up with the following new ways of doing things: Rather than Velcro bands, we now have red gel bands which we hope will become a fashion statement and be worn by all VB Club members all summer. We ordered about 15% of the bands in a smaller size for younger children and will adjust the order for future years based on the number needed this year. Do to the popularity of yoga, it will now be held Monday/Wednesday and Friday at 10:0011:30. Aerobics will now be held on Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00-11:00. We are now charging a $15 user fee to attend yoga for the summer. There will be purple gel bands for yoga sold during the membership drive and where memberships are sold (library, visitor center and tennis kiosk). You must purchase a VB Club membership as well as a yoga band to participate in yoga. Children under 13 will not be permitted to participate in yoga, so do not purchase yoga bands for them. Tennis activities for the most part are being

moved to the afternoon to allow members additional time in the morning to use the courts. Some improvements have been made to the clubhouse: We replaced the old white wooden doors with green (their original color) steel doors. The roof was repaired and, fingers crossed, it doesn’t leak anymore. The sand was cleaned out from underneath and beside the clubhouse where it had blown in. A new projector was purchased. The VB Club offers a fabulous opportunity to meet community minded people and give back to the community we all love! Two new volunteers have stepped up this year to replace two volunteers who have donated a tremendous number of hours over the past several years. Cathy Finnbogason set the bar high as our treasurer over the past 5 years. In February, Dave Wilson took over this position following in the footsteps of his grandfather who held the same position decades ago. At the last AGM, Mike Clement, a Sandy Bay cottager, took over from me as Vice-President when I became President as a result of Anil retiring from his dedicated and enthusiastic Presidency. We are lucky to have such fabulous volunteers! If you are looking for an opportunity to get involved at VB, there are two opportunities opening up at the end of the summer. Wendy Derksen, our secretary, takes minutes, coorganizes the Volunteer Appreciation Event, organizes popcorn machine and supplies and various other duties. Leslie Sarchuk, our Director at Large, co-organizes the Volunteer Appreciation Event, applies for and manages grants for VB Club employees, sits on the VB Clubhouse Restoration Committee as well as various other duties. If you would like more information on either of these positions, please let me or another member of the Executive know. The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime. Suzy Hester

Letter to the Editor

My name is Jack Fotheringham and I have a cabin at 202-6th Ave. and would like to complain about the amount of cars/trucks driving down Arthur Ave “way too fast.” Most of the time these people do not even slow down at intersections expecting the other traffic to stop. Well I have seen many cars not slow down and almost cause an accident, it happened to me. I was driving down Arthur towards my cabin and I had to brake fast so not to collide with another car that was driving south on 6th avenue. He never even slowed down and when he went thru the intersection and saw me, he looked at me as if I was in the wrong. I feel that we should have stop signs at every intersection to prevent any kind of accidents. I know there is a speed limit but don’t think people obey to it. Even when we cannot drive in, many taxis and contract trucks also do not obey the law. Jack Fotheringham

Whatever would Victoria Beach do without its volunteers. Once again the Municipality is indebted to Kathy Brydon for spearheading our doctor recruitment drive. We will have doctors from July 2 to September 4th. Thanks also to the team from council and community who opened the building and spruced it up for the summer. This includes Brian Hodgson, Linda Kliewer, Linda McMillan, Kathy McKibbin, Dave McKibbin, Alexandra Mason, Mike Mason, Trish Richardson Mason, Abi Mason, Linda Murray, Phil Murray, Tamie Archer, Chris Archer, Sally Lawler, Sheila Grover, Kurt Engbrecht, and Jennifer Engbrecht. They made everything ship shape inside and out. We have a request of the community. We need a two drawer lockable filing cabinet for the doctor’s office. If you have one that you are willing to donate, please contact Kathy Brydon, Linda McMillan or Kathy McKibbin. We will come and pick it up and install it at the Doctor’s office 124 Birch Avenue. So once again, here’s to the work crew THANK YOU SO MUCH REEVE AND COUNCIL

Victoria Beach HERALD

Victoria Beach Club

2016 Membership

We are very excited for another fantastic summer at Victoria Beach! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. This year, we are pleased to once again offer seven weeks of programming. You will be able to see the full line-up in the Calendar of Regular and Special Events (printed in PINK this year), which is provided with the purchase of a family membership.

Membership Benefits

The Victoria Beach Club, an organization of volunteers, sponsors and coordinates many of the recreational programs and events held during the summer in this beautiful lakeside community. The Recreational Programs offered include swimming, tennis and golf lessons, yoga, aerobics, mixed-bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen-nights and family recreation nights – just to name a few. Some of the Special Events offered are: Sports Day, Beach Events, the Sandcastle Building Contest, the Cross-Country Run, the Masquerade, the Dog Show, as well as open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer and volleyball. The Club is also responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the Recreation Director, the Recreation and Tennis Court Assistants, the Librarians and certified Swimming Instructors. A major source of revenue to provide these programs and events is the sale of memberships, and so to participate in the above programs and activities, a membership or day-pass is required. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach so special. Please support the V.B. Club by purchasing one or more memberships for your family and any visitors you may expect. To help the Club out even more, in addition to buying your membership, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Club (a tax-receipt will be provided for donations of $20 or more). Should you not need a membership, perhaps you could still consider making a donation to the Club, to help maintain the cherished traditions of V.B. This year memberships again will be $50 per family (a great bargain for seven weeks of programming!). A single Family is defined as parent(s) and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters. If additional memberships are needed after the Membership Drive, they can be purchased at the V.B. Info Booth (at the Gate), at the Library or at the Tennis Courts during their regular hours. The family membership is valid for the whole seven weeks. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships can be purchased by cot-

tage owners, as well as by renters, guests and cottagers in other beach communities – essentially, by anyone who wishes to participate in the V.B Club’s programs and activities. A membership also entitles you to voting privileges (one vote for each $50 membership). Please remember that wristbands must be worn to all V.B. Club activities and programs in order to participate. Each family member will receive a RED wristband upon the purchase of a membership. Note to Parents – please consider writing your child’s name on their wristband in case it is left behind at an event. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00 at the library and tennis courts.

Where do I buy a family membership?

The door-to-door V.B. Club Membership Drive will take place from July 1st – July 3rd. Over this weekend, volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($15 per person). To obtain your shoe tag, please take your membership application receipt to the tennis courts. We will also be selling the yoga memberships for $15 this year. Please take your membership form to your first yoga class to receive your purple wristband. We will also be selling memberships at the following times; Clubhouse, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am on Saturday, July 2nd Tennis Courts and Library, during their regular business hours Information Booth at the VB Gate, during their business hours (8:00 am – 8:00 pm), Clubhouse, from 10: 00 am – noon on Sunday, July 3rd Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be made payable to The Victoria Beach Club. The Victoria Beach Club will be offering day-passes again this year. These passes will be available at the Tennis Courts, Library, and Information Booth at the VB Gate during their regular hours, at a fee of $5.00 each, and will allow the wearer to participate in all Club activities and programs for the day, as if they had a seasonal membership. The passes are for individuals, and are valid for the date for which they are marked only; wristbands may be purchased in advance, but the dates will be written on the wristbands by staff at the time of purchase. The Calendar of Regular and Special Events will not be included with the purchase of day-pass wristbands. Volunteers are always needed for the Membership Drive! If you are interested please contact Monica at 204 461 1694. We are currently seeking 15 more volunteers for routes. Have a wonderful summer everyone and see you on the beach! Cheers from your membership team, Monica White, Darcie Reimer and Jen Campbell

Tennis Etiquette

Victoria Beach HERALD

Of all sports, tennis is famous for its etiquette. While sticking to a bunch of rules about how to behave on a tennis court might sound stuffy and old-fashioned, tennis etiquette actually makes the sport more enjoyable and will make you more fun to share a court with. The most important thing is to HAVE FUN and relax when playing tennis! It’s a game, and should be enjoyed as such. Here they are as I see it. Avoid loud grunting, yelling, or loud talking when playing. It can be very annoying and uncomfortable for others and never swear. Don’t interrupt games on neighboring courts for any reason. Wait until a point is over to walk past a court or retrieve a ball. If a ball rolls into your court from an adjacent court, stop rallying if you have not begun to play. Return the ball immediately. If you are in the process of completing a point, and the ball disturbs either you or your opponent, stop playing immediately and call a “let”. Replay the point. If you are able to play on, return the ball as soon as the point has been completed. Our courts do not have individual entrances. So it’s necessary to walk across a court to get to yours or to get off your court. When preparing to enter the court, please wait quietly at the gate, with your partners, until the players on the courts nearest the gate have finished a point. Then, quickly go to your assigned court, ensuring that you are not moving behind a court where a point is in play. If you are playing Doubles, the four players should enter and exit together, if singles two. Wait until the point is over then move quickly along the fence line to your own court. Make sure you completely close the gate so the gate does not become a hazard or balls roll out. Servers should keep the score throughout the game. The server should announce the score at the start of each game and each subsequent point in each game. If the ball is out or it’s a fault, call it immediately and clearly. You are supposed to call all balls that bounce on your side of the net. Never call a ball on your opponent’s side of the net unless your opponent asks you for help in deciding on how to call it. Make all line calls promptly and accurately; never challenge a call made by your opponent or partner. In doubles, you should not call balls wide if you are on the far sideline and your partner is closer to the ball. Most likely, your partner has a better angle to judge whether it landed in or out, so rely on your teammate’s judgment. Similarly, let your partner make the call if you are receiving a serve and your teammate is standing near the service line. He has a better angle to see the ball, and you should trust that he will make the right call. Close calls. If you cannot clearly tell whether your opponent’s shot is in or out, it’s in. You must be 100 percent sure you’re making the correct call, so the benefit of the doubt goes to your opponent if there’s any uncertainty on your part. This are some of the basic rules of tennis etiquette that we should all follow.

Friday Nights I remember when we would walk down the old wooden staircase with its peeling green paint to meet the sunset sinking at our feet. Friday night at the beach became a kind of a weekly ritual for our family. It began with the sound of tires on gravel, the breaks of an old station wagon squeaking as it pulled onto our front lawn. The whole family would all run out to meet Dad and help carry in the groceries, taking little bags and avoiding the huge, heavy cooler. He had to toil away in the city all summer long, and would come down on Friday nights, in which he toiled some more -- painting, fixing, mowing the lawn, and do-it-yourself carpentry projects with the neighbors. We would take two chairs, a few towels and the faithful dog on his long, twenty-five foot long plastic leash. He would run along the shore, with the leash bouncing behind, making a trail of sand shooting into the air behind him. The kids would throw sticks for fetch, or toss a handful of pebbles into the water to hear what sounded like a waterfall. On days we were feeling brave, we would swim way out to the Big Rock which rose a few feet above the lake’s surface and sit on top of it. Tired and thirsty from its run, the dog would charge headfirst into the waves, the water gushing into his

open mouth. He would look up with a guilty look when my mother yelled at him for drinking the algae-laden greenish water. The dog then ran down the shore, free from being tied up all day in the yard and making the most of it. I remember chasing that long, green leash because he knew once we caught him, his fun was over. We would sit together and not say much, and watched the sunset and greeted passing neighbours and knew all of their children’s names and dog’s names. Without internet or television, watching a pack of dogs greeting one other seemed to be the only entertainment we needed. I have been lucky enough to visit many beautiful beaches in Hawaii, Mexico, Southeast Asia and other places. Even with their palm trees and their splendor, they just do not compare to King Arthur or Alexandra Beach. Maybe it’s because I look upon Victoria beach with nostalgic, romantic eyes. Probably because it is quiet and peaceful, there are no hotels or tourists lined up along the shore. Everyone knows each other and stops to share the latest news. Just up the stairs my grandfather built lies the white cottage we shared. It felt like people are sharing the land. It’s because Victoria beach is a very special kind of place, and very hard to find- a well-kept secret. There are no neon signs or bars or hotels to comCONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Friday Nights continued.... mercialize or ugly it up. Although the world spins and constantly changes, VB seems to stand still, resisting change -- a relic of the past, to remind us where we have come from. Where we grew up. A very powerful feeling of nostalgia dawns upon me, when I think of Victoria Beach. It seems when you visit there, it’s stuck in

a timeless time that just persists -- like a box of old photographs, and it reminds you of your childhood, of innocence, and joy. Even visiting now as an adult, I always feel like running along, playing, swimming, and going for jumps off the pier. It was like a passionate summer romance, short lived and doomed to die…but intense, with a magnetic quality to it. After a seemingly endless frozen winter of numb fingers and early morning hockey practices, it was an escape to paradise. What a simple spit of land can do to the memory! During the afternoons of long Winnipeg winters, it is nearly pitch black, at five o’clock. I’ve read every book in the house, watched every movie, and already tired of both watching hockey and the taste of hot chocolate. There are four more months of winter. I feel like going skating at the local outdoor rink but it’s too cold and no one will be there, which would be no fun. Then, I remember summer, and lean back, reminiscing. The memories come flooding back into my mind’s eye, and I see a copper coloured gravel road snaking through the white birch trees, and hear the chickadee calls…

Scary Night in April The final leg of Highway 59 into Victoria Beach winds its way through a causeway that is bordered on the west by an expansive marsh that extends across to Pelican Point Road. During the evening of April 27th we could see a significant fire burning across the marsh all along the edge of the causeway from our cottage on Pelican Point. We could see fire trucks working to extinguish it, and by midnight when we went to bed, it appeared that they had been successful. However, around 3:30 am, we were awakened by a very bright light shining through our windows, and were astounded to see the entire marsh ablaze! It was right up to the edge of the road behind our cottage with sparks flying into our trees and onto our bunkhouse roof. It was a very scary sight! Still in our p.j.’s, we grabbed our car keys and went outside to find that Brad

Patzer, VB Fire Chief, was driving his truck up and down our road spraying water on the trees and bushes. Other trucks could be seen doing the same thing on roads around the perimeter of the fire. We asked Brad if we should evacuate, and he calmly advised us that he didn’t think it was necessary because he was confident that the firefighters now had the fire under control. He was obviously correct in his assessment because, by daylight, the sun was shining and from our vantage point we could see only a few smoldering areas in the marsh. During our conversation with Brad in the middle of the night it was disconcerting to learn that the fire had been deliberately set. He told us that once the firefighters had extinguished the earlier fire along the causeway the “culprits” returned and relit it!

Scary Night continued.... Thanks to our volunteer fire department, working tirelessly for approximately 16 hours, all the cottages around the marsh were safe and the only property damage was to the boat slips that are stored in the winter on the shoreline at the south end of Pelican Point. During the day of April 28, we could see a helicopter water bomber flying low overhead, dropping water on still smoldering areas in the marsh. We learned subsequently that the helicopter, spotter plane and additional manpower were provided by the Office of the Fire Commissioner and Manitoba Conservation. We also saw members of the fire deptartment and emergency personnel patrolling the perimeters of the marsh throughout the day and evening. They deserve the highest praise for their prompt response, expertise and ongoing surveillance! I shudder to think what the outcome of this marsh fire, and others over the years, would have been without them and their equipment. With gratitude,  Janie Gardner

Council Corner

Reeve Brian Hodgson and Councillors Kathy McKibbin, Linda McMillan, Penny McMorris and Gordon Ross would like to welcome you all back for another special summer at our wonderful Victoria Beach. We, like you, are looking forward to another memorable summer. In May, you received your water bill with a TEMPORARY boil water notice. The province requires us to send the notice but the water is now safe to drink. In that notice you also were informed about brush pick-up. When we moved from scoop and burn to mulching the brush, we had to change the pick up time frame. Mulching takes more time. The first 3 weeks of June have been set aside for that process. As a result, we could only allow residents to put their brush out in May. We want the beach to look good for the summer. Most people understood the request. Unfortunately, some people ignored the request. They chose to put brush out after the crews had cleared their area. This action causes unnecessary expenses for the community. PLEASE DO NOT PUT BRUSH OUT ON THE STREETS. Keep it in your yard until September 6, take it to the dump on Hwy 11 (about 6 k past Traverse Bay Corner) or hire a contractor to take it to the dump for you. If The Fort McMurray fires and an incident on the May long weekend brought forth the hazard that we live with. We live in a boreal forest. Balsam and poplar, our two most common species, burst into flame easily. Open fires on municipal land and beaches are illegal at all times. Fires on private land in approved fire pits may be allowed if a permit is issued by the Fire Chief or his designate. Please do not light a fire or use fireworks without a permit. Remember that construction activity is permitted from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day. Party noise and music must be kept to a reasonable level at all times. Not everyone is a dog lover. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. They are not allowed to be on the beaches between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. from June 1 to Labour Day. Maximum fines of $500.00 plus costs apply. And finally, think about getting a civic sign for your home. These green reflective signs make it easy for 911 responders to

VB FLEA MARKET

“Reuse, Renew and Recycle” SATURDAY, July 9th 12:30 pm–2:30 pm at the Victoria Beach Community Clubhouse Once again, here is a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Community Club and to pass on your treasures that are in good condition and need a new home. Last year, our Victoria Beach Community raised over $3000.00 for our clubhouse and all its diverse programs. As your retiring flea market conveners this year, we hope that everyone will continue to support this important VB Community Club event. Last year ten terrific truck driver teams came to help with the early morning transport and over 111 committed volunteers arrived to begin the challenging job of setting up, sorting, pricing and selling treasures. Later in the day, many volunteers returned to help our charity and clean up teams find new homes for the remaining articles. A very special thanks is extended to all of these wonderful VB volunteers especially the seven caring charity van volunteers, our clean up crew, our dedicated VB recreation team, our generous VB business sponsors, our friends at the VB Herald, the RMVB Council and our VB Public Works staff. Every effort was made last year and will be made this year to “Reuse, Renew and Recycle” and to avoid sending valuable items to the dump. The Formidable Clean Up is still our greatest challenge at the Flea Market. Unfortunately most of the charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding area are no longer able to make the trip to pick up our larger treasures, especially the charities that are trying to care for refugees arriving in Manitoba. If anyone at Victoria Beach could acquire a large moving van for us, we would be most appreciative. As well, we need more volunteers who would be willing to deliver unsold treasures to a charity of their choice in Manitoba and/or help us load the cars that our guest charities have provided. Last year we helped load two small vans for our guest charity – The Spence Street Thrift Shop, an inner city agency that offers pregnancy and family support services in Winnipeg. Addi-

tional volunteers stepped forward to help salvage items for other charitable organizations and we loaded two more vehicles. As a result of these last minute efforts, a number of local not-for-profit organizations benefitted from many of the items that were not sold. We are very pleased that the Spence Street Thrift Shop is once again willing to come to Victoria Beach and is sending a small van to be loaded with appropriate items for their store. There are two large charitable organizations that could not pick up from Victoria Beach on the day of our flea market, but would welcome donations of our unsold household items to their large warehouses during the week. They are Centre Flavie-Laurent- 450 Provencher Blvd. open Mon.to Fri. 8:30 am-3:30 pm and Sat. 9:00 am-noon and Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape – 606 Selkirk Ave. open Mon. to Fri. 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Another charity, Hands of Hope (204 261-8607) has a smaller warehouse and fewer volunteers, so they’d like people to phone them before delivery so that they’ll be sure to have a volunteer to meet them. These three organizations give the items away to needy people, rather than selling them. If you might be willing to take a van or carload into the city on a day of your choosing, please contact Mavis Whicker for additional information at mwhicker@mts.net or at the beach 756-2894. As well, if you are willing to join the Formidable Clean Up Crew, please contact Lorraine Cook at growingupgreat@gmail.com and/or join us at 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm on Saturday, July 4th at the Clubhouse Our next Flea Market challenge is the Sunrise Set Up. If you are willing to get up early in the morning, just “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick ups, set up, etc. between 8 am and 10:30 am … the earlier, the better. Hopefully a few more volunteers will join us earlier this year, as it can be a little frightening being Home Alone at VB Clubhouse in the wee morning hours. Volunteer group photo is still planned for 12:00 noon. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise –pick up trucks, antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc. Volunteers may arrive to help anytime after 8:00 am on Saturday morning and are free to stay as long or as little as you like. If you have a pick up truck, please contact Deb Covernton at 7563505 to register as you will need a special entrance pass. Bring a partner or a crew if possible and pick up your assigned route sheet so that we do not miss anyone. Remember to bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew. We’ll supply the latex gloves for those volunteers who are sorting our treasures. VB Community outside the restricted area who wish to have items picked up, please call Deb with your address and we will try to accommodate you. Please put your articles out by 8 am Saturday morning, July 9th. Regretfully articles put out on Friday evening often disappear. Please note that the Flea Market will only accept small electrical appliances that are in good working order and CSA approved. Please box your books and label separately for the book sale on Sunday. The following items will NOT BE PICKED UP: life jackets, mattresses, sofas, love seats, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, electric fry pans, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, building supplies, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, gas BBQs and please … no dirty or broken items and sorry, no clothing! If you have a questionable treasure, please call Joanne at 891-1602 for advice before Saturday. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Flea Market continued.... Finally, after six wonderful and fun-filled years, Deb and I are DEFINITELY retiring as your Flea Market conveners. It has been a great experience for both of us as we have met so many wonderful new VB friends and families. If you might be interested in taking on this important event next year, please come and meet our Flea Market team on Saturday and know that we will always be there to support you in the future. Thanks to the ongoing support and encouragement of our wonderful VB community, we believe that our 2016 VB Flea market will again be a resounding success. We look forward to meeting everyone on Saturday, July 9th. Have a wonderful summer! See you at The Beach! POLICEMANS’ CORNER As you read this first edition of the Herald for 2016 I will ask you: 1) how many years have you been coming to the beautiful summers here at Victoria Beach, and 2) how many editions of the Herald have you read in your lifetime? If that number is large, then I should not have to remind everyone of the VB by-laws which govern so much of our lives here. And yet, so many disregard them as not important or not pertaining to them. Please take the time to familiarize yourselves with By-Law # 1509 (illegal dumping). The reason that the RM does not want brush piles during the Restricted Time is that they are a haven for mice, voles, rats etc. and they are a fire hazard. It costs money to have them picked up outside of the regular pick-up times and it adds to the road traffic if those vehicles have to come in to pick up in July/Aug. By-Law # 1516 refers to open fires and fire pits and ByLaw # 1523 concerns noise. I think most people are conversant with these 2 by-laws. By-Law #1486 refers to bird feeders and food attractants. We live in the country … in the woods … and wildlife is all around us which is wonderful. To a point. I don’t think anyone would welcome a bear on their deck at 2am going after a bird feeder or the remainder of your pet’s dinner which is still on the porch. Our food is very attractive to all kinds of wildlife. Who among you have tried scrubbing skunk smell off of a large, unhappy and uncooperative K9? Enough said. Remember that Police worldwide are prepared to engage violent acts on your behalf so that you make sleep peacefully at home in your beds undisturbed. And we are happy to serve you. Stewart MacPHERSON Victoria Beach Police Editor’s Note: For those who are curious about the RM’s Bylaws, a number are available to read on the RM’s website: rmofvictoriabeach.ca

8 at the Gate Like it says on the shirt, we ride every morning (weather permitting – road bike tires don’t like wet roads) at 08:00. Our pace varies from 25 – 35 km/h depending on the group, wind and discussion topic for those who can speak and ride at the same time. The distance varies from 40 – 50 kms to Lester Beach via Albert and Hillside with the occasional loop to Belair and Grand Beach to add kms and challenge. We provide a fun way to exercise and socialize. Our group consists of riders of all ages and abilities. Included in our group are retreaded runners whose knees need a rest, serious triathletes working on riding in a straight line, riders training for major events: Banff and Vancouver Gran Fondos as well riders who will be participating in fund-raising events: VB Police “Wish Ride” and MS “Biking to the Viking” ride later in the season. Participating riders will need a road bike in good mechanical condition, helmet and a positive attitude. Riders under 18 are welcome accompanied by a responsible adult. Future Events: VB Police Bike Auction, Saturday July 2nd, check elsewhere in this issue for exact times. For information contact Bob Marshall cell 204-261-4292, VB local 756-8255, email <jmarsha@ mymts.net>, we are also on FaceBook “eightatthegate”.
