This will be my last president’s report. It has been a fun two years as president, two years as vicepresident and seven (?) years as treasurer. Over the years, I had the opportunity to work with four dedicated presidents that I learned a tremendous amount from (Marj Birley, John Heppenstall, Maureen Neuendorff and Anil Kaul). Thank you for your leadership. Victoria Beach is full of people who are happy to spend their most precious time giving back to the community. I feel fortunate to have been able to meet and work with all of these people. It’s also a community full of people with strong opinions and demands on these volunteers. I would encourage those of you who fit into this category to remember these people are not getting paid. They are also not just volunteering in the summer. Their work continues in the winter months. They are doing it because they love VB and want to help keep the awesome programming we provide going. The VB Club Annual Meeting is Sunday, August 13th at 4:00 pm at the clubhouse. Should you

have any questions, compliments or suggestions for the Executive, this would be the time to raise them. This meeting will also be where the VicePresident and President will be elected. Mike Clement, the current Vice-President is prepared to let his name stand for President. Mike is an asset to the community and will make a fabulous President. He is super responsive, inquisitive and full of ideas. If anyone is interested in putting their name forward, please let a current member of the Executive know prior to the meeting if possible. The Volunteer Appreciation Night is this evening, Friday August 11th, at 7:00-9:00 pm at the clubhouse. If you convened an event, were on the Executive, or volunteered at an event this year or in previous years, please come and enjoy refreshments and snacks. Although I’ll no longer be on the Executive, I will still be at VB (new cottage on Centre!) and I’m sure will be volunteering again in some capacity in the future. The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime, Suzy Cramp

Welcome to Dr. Belynda Salter-Oliver and thank you to Dr. Katherine Kearnes The medical committee would like to say thank you to Doctor Katherine Kearns for her two weeks service to our community. We hope that you and your family enjoyed your time with us this summer. We would also like to welcome Doctor Belynda Salter-Oliver who will be with us until August 18. If you have just arrived at the beach for the summer, the clinic is open daily from 9:30 to 11:30 (except for Wednesday and Friday) and

every evening from 5:30 to 7:30. The clinic is located at 124 Birch Avenue. The phone number is 204 756 6305. It is available for use by everyone, whether you live inside or outside of the Vehicle Restricted area. Please remember to bring your Manitoba medical card and some cash or a cheque in case you need to buy medication from the clinic. Reeve, Coouncil and Medical Committee

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 92nd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

COUNCIL CORNER CIVIC SIGNS – It is imperative that all property owners display the civic numbers assigned to them by the Municipality. These numbers have been registered with the 911 call centre to identify the location of properties. The civic numbers should be of adequate size (at least 4 “) and displayed in a location that is clearly visible from the street. The best ones are available from the East Beaches Resource Centre at the Senior’s Scene for $50.00. The green signs are reflective and are visible in the dark. Help EMO find your address in the dark. BRUSH – Each spring and autumn the Municipality hires a contractor to pick up the brush from in front of your property. During the summer months NO brush should be put out on the road allowances. The exact wording of By-Law 1569 was sent out with your tax bill. Thank you to those who are considerate and keep the area attractive. Please do not put your deadfall out on the streets. If a branch or two falls in your yard during the summer months, keep it on your own property. The next brush pick-up is AFTER THANKSGIVING. You may place you brush on the roadsides from September 4th to October 9th. BIKE STICKERS – Bike owners can improve their chance of recovering their lost or stolen bike by registering them with the Gate Information Office. A numbered sticker will be issued to apply to the frame of the bike. The Police are able to return a bike to its rightful owner when it is found. The cost of the sticker is $2.00 and they last for years. WATERCRAFT – When winds are high, Lake Winnipeg is a wonderful place to windsurf or kite board. Please remember that in Manitoba motor boats, water skiers, wake boarders, jet-skis, windsurfers and kite surfers must not operate within 100 feet or 30 metres of swimmers and the shoreline. Speed restrictions for all types of watercraft apply. In the RM of Victoria Beach, we do not have posted speed limits, therefore, the rule for unposted speed limits apply. That limit is 10km/h (6 mph) within 30 metres (100 ft) from the shore. This limit applies to all watercraft and apples everywhere in the RM. Please ensure everyone is safe. Reeve and Council

Dear friends and residents of Victoria Beach, As we all know, The Moonlight Inn Restaurant is a very special place. Going back 90 years, every person who spent their summers here as a child has shared the experience of meeting at the Moonlight. We all came for an evening ice cream, or an order of chicken fingers and fries, we all watched the cooler older kids socialize upstairs, waiting to be one ourselves, we begged our parents for quarters for the arcade, and for many of us it was our first job. This summer I, and my friend Ben Peterson decided to become the new Proprietors of this historic and important establishment. When we heard that the last tenants were leaving and that no one had yet applied to take over the reins, both Ben and I pondered the idea, having worked here in our youth. A week before the tender application was due I called Ben for his uncle Dan Suderman’s phone number to ask about his experience running the Moonlight for 20 years. Ben immediately asked me if I was thinking of running it and told me he was thinking the same thing. The idea seemed just perfectly crazy. We are now a month in and, as usual, the summer is flying by. We have been absolutely floored by the support everyone has given us, and we are working our hardest to provide you with the best food and experience the Moonlight can offer. We understand how important this place is to the community of Victoria Beach, and we are truly honoured to take on this responsibility. So thank you all for contributing to make this place magical by meeting at the Moonlight. We hope to see you here. Sincerely, Aaron Vincent and Ben Peterson with Dan Sudermann

VB Novelty Tennis Tournament 2017 August 19th and 20th

As we begin to wind down the tennis season at our beloved VB. courts, we would like to remind everyone that the Novelty Tennis Tournament will be held on the weekend of August 19th and 20th. FUNALICIOUS MUCH! Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Please be advised that all players must be members of the Victoria Beach Club and have their own shoe tag. We look forward to an excellent weekend of great tennis, many laughs and camaraderie. Please note that this tournament is a two day event. Please consult your social calendars and ensure that you are available for both days. Dropping out at the last minute makes it difficult and cumbersome for the conveners. That being said, please also let us know via the sign up sheets if you can only play either the Saturday OR Sunday and we will contact you in the event of a last minute dropout due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. Here are a few important notes for your information. • Sign up sheets will be posted at the tennis courts on Friday, August 11th at noon. • Sheets will be taken down at 5pm on Thursday, August 17th (or when the first 48 players have signed up). Please sign up early to avoid disappointment. The draw filled up very quickly last year. • Entry fee is $5.00 Please play before you play. We will hunt you down otherwise. • The Match committee will make up teams of 4 players. (Groups are highly encouraged to come up with a team name). Prizes will be awarded for originality. • Each entrant will play a total of 4 sets. (2 sets on Saturday and 2 sets on Sunday) • Matches will consist of pro-sets (first to nine wins; tie breaker at 8 all). All games will be “no-ad deuce”. • Winners will be decided by total games won. Losses will subtracted in the event of a tie. • The above format is subject to change due to inclement weather or number of entries.

Eight at the Gate

Another perfect riding day at Victoria Beach. We had a near record turnout again for our annual event. Riders of all levels, from a former Olympian to a “third time on a road bike” participated in our group ride and breakfast. Instead of riding for sprint points we had prizes for the “Advanced” group (top of the hill at Belair Rd), taken by Lisa Mensink, second place “Frosty Matt” and third place “Tall Matt”. “Senior Matt” was in the “Advanced Conversational Group” and did not contest for the sprint. Sorry, Lisa, all the prosecco was consumed. Hope you enjoy the Innis and Gunn beer! We are not sure who ate the most pancakes. There is still lots of riding left this season, so please join us. For information contact Bob Marshall 204 261-4292, jmarsha@mymts.net or Facebook “eightatthegate”.

Volleyball Tournament Saturday, August 12th Please register your team for the volleyball tournament with Lisa Lucht at (204) 999-4715, call or text. Call before Friday August 11 at 6 PM. Teams have 6 players and must have 2 female players on the field. There is a Recreational and Competitive side. We start at 9 AM but will wait for players participating in the cross country run. We could use some help setting up the nets, if you are available please come a little early and help us. Thanks! Lisa Lucht and Sophie McGoey

Cross Country Run Saturday August 12th Are your runners dusted off and do you have your singlet from high school – if so you are a perfect candidate for the Cross-Country run. The event is open to all regardless of age and speed! The short course is approximately 3 km and the Long course is approximately 5 km. There is also the Family Relay for 4 family/extended family members. Last year’s trophy winners, please return your trophy to the Johnson cottage at 3093rd Avenue or bring the trophy to the Clubhouse at time of registration. Registration: 9:00 am at the clubhouse, start is at 9:30. See you there! Shannon Grace and Paul

She works on a small budget but always comes up with new and unique contents. We had a mix of old and new members this year. Outgoing are Heather, Laureen, and Sally. Patti Ulrich and Teresa Johnstone are the 2 remaining committee members. Thanks to all of you for working hard behind the scenes to make this such a success. Like any endeavor, the harder you work beforehand correlates with the success and enjoyment of the day. See you all next year – the last Wednesday in July. Thank you to everyone who came out to support this new event. Close to two hundred enthusiastic people filled the Clubhouse and showed off their expertise in subjects ranging from Canadian history to book cover designs to bird calls (who knew that a woodpecker sounds like a musical birthday card?). The profit for the evening will go towards the Clubhouse renovation project. Just as all VB events rely on the help of volunteers for their success, this one was no different. Thanks to the rec kids for setup and takedown, Julia and Jaxin for staffing the bar, Lori Cechmanek, Brian Hyska, and Evelyn Russel for selling tickets, and Bruce and Dana Sirrell for going out of their way to be available and so willing to help. Beach People Mesa

February was the scene of another great time together in Mesa, Arizona. It was a perfect day and we had a rousing game of bean bag toss. There is a lot of competition for the coveted title and the winners were Jim Young and Nettie Stople. They were presented with a plaque donated by Dan Sernyk. Many thanks to our gracious hosts Sharon and Glen Torgerson for having us in their home. For a long, long time I’ve yearned to go back to the happiest time in my life…summers at Victoria Beach at my grandmother’s cottage. I had the opportunity to rent a cottage for 2 weeks in July and, luckily picked the 2 weeks that enveloped all my

favourite memories. I was so excited to learn that we arrived on Sports Day, my favourite event and that Sandcastle Day and the Children’s Masquerade were also being held in the weeks we’d be there. We left Edmonton a few days early so we could pick up the grandchildren in Saskatoon and get to Victoria beach in time for sports day. I didn’t really know what to expect, not having been here for 55 years. I was my granddaughter’s age in 1964, the last time I was here. I was sure that technology would have come a long way in that time. My memories include an outhouse, walking to the pump to get water, one of the Ateah’s delivering ice for the ice box, and wishing my mother would hurry up and get the fire started to warm the cottage up in the morning. It didn’t take long to discover that not much had changed at all. We arrived at the parking lot to find that was exactly the same as I remember. We had some time to kill till our cottage was ready so we walked from the parking lot to the Moonlight Inn where we were meeting our host. I was afraid I wouldn’t remember where everything was, but when we arrived in the clearing, there was the store, the bakery and the Moonlight Inn – just as I remembered them. As we were walking in, the smell of the trees brought tears to my eyes. The memory of the smell of Victoria Beach was overwhelming. It wasn’t the only time that day that brought tears to my eyes. Everywhere we went and everything we did invoked memories of 55 years past. In the 2 weeks we were at Victoria Beach we met so many nice people – people we ascertained I took swimming lessons with when I was 9. People who lived next door to us on 6th Ave. One lady who walked us to the cemetery who’s mother gave me my swimming tests each summer. People who happily helped me remember the most wonderful time of my life. Thank you to all of you who crossed my path. Lorna McDonald P.S. Almost forgot the most pleasure my sister and I had while here – feeding the chipmunks just like we did 55 years ago.
