HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Children’s Masquerade This year the Children’s Masquerade is on Saturday, July 16. We’ll get started at 10am and the location is the same – the Art Vincent Memorial at the Village Green. The sun always shines on the Masquerade but, in the unlikely event of rain, we’ll use the Clubhouse. That gives you a couple of weeks to come up with a fun costume. Assuming we’re organized enough, we’ll have prizes for Best Original costume, Best VB-themed and Best Group costume. The Masquerade isn’t just for kids either so we’ll also award a prize (and lots of glory) for the Best Adult costume. After the costume parade, we’ll have a musical performance by children’s entertainers Aaron and Kim Burnett. So come on down to the Village Green and check the show out. I’m sure you’ll have fun and maybe even learn a new dance move or two. Kristie and Doug Pollard

President’s Message

Happy Canada Day! The VB Club hopes you keep the kids up late to see a fabulous fireworks show at 10:45 July 1st. The best views for the show are from the Sailboat Beach or Redwing Park. Thank you to my husband Rob for organizing! This weekend is the weekend to get yourself a membership and registered for swimming lessons so you can be ready to go Monday morning when the 6 weeks of programming kicks off. Monica White, Darcie Reimer and Jen Campbell have been working hard to get the membership drive all organized. Please see inside herald for information on the membership drive and swimming registration process. Tamara Roehr and Alice Russell will be diligently setting everyone up for swimming lessons on Sunday from 10:00-noon at the clubhouse. This week’s activities include the regulars (yoga, fitness classes, bike hikes, bridge, movies, games, golf lessons, tennis lessons, etc) plus a few special activities. There are 3 tennis activities planned this week- Girls’ Tennis Day, Tennis Manitoba Day, Rogers Rookie Tournament and Teen Movie Night. There are not a lot of activities aimed just at the teens, so please respect that and only attend if you are over 13. There have been questions about the new yoga charge ($15/person for the season) on top of the regular membership fee. The reason for this new charge is two-fold. The first reason for the increase is the cost of the yoga program. The club has hired instructors that are travelling from

the city and in order to attract them and make it worth their while to spend the 3 hours in the car to teach the hour and a half class, we increased the rate they are paid. The second reason is that we have changed yoga from Tues/Thurs to Mon/ Wed/Fri due to the popularity of yoga so we have 3 classes rather than two at this increased rate. The fitness classes are now Tues/Thurs and there is not an additional fee to attend those classes. I must apologize for a mistake in last week’s President’s Report. I mentioned that our new treasurer, Dave Wilson, was following in the footsteps of his grandfather that was also the treasurer of the club years ago. Although Dave thought he’d get a kick out of it, I thought I should print an edit that it was his father not his grandfather. Oops! We’ve made another improvement to the clubhouse that will open up a bunch more fun activities to come this summer! We added a satellite dish. It has been tested with the new projector and the picture is awesome! We plan to air sporting events during the Olympics in August and will be sharing information on times that the clubhouse will be open for these viewings. We are also planning a special 30+ event/dance party to watch the last live Tragically Hip concert (advertisement will be in the next edition of the herald). The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime, Suzy Hester

VB Police Board Public Meeting Please come and join the VB Police Board at our upcoming Public Meeting at the East Beaches Senior Scene at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20th. Check out the RMVB website www. rmofvictoriabeach.ca, under the Police Board, for our upcoming Agenda or for past Agendas,

Minutes and our Annual Reports. This is your opportunity to ask questions of the Board and the Chief of Police. We look forward to seeing you. John Gow, Isabelle Brunel and Penny McMorris, RMVB Police Board

WELCOME TO DOCTOR KATHERINE KEARNS Again this year, we would like to welcome Dr. Katherine Kearns and her family to Victoria Beach. She will be with us for the first two weeks of the summer, living at the Doctor’s cottage 124 Birch Avenue. The phone number at the doctor’s office is 204-756-6305. Clinic hours are 9:30 to 11:30 and 5:30 to 7:30. On Monday there is one clinic only from 5:30 through to 7:30.

Council Corner

Happy Canada Day! Reeve and Council welcome you to the July long weekend at Victoria Beach and encourage you to enjoy it the fullest. Why not think about a trip to the golf course? It is in beautiful shape this year. You can usually play a game in 2 hours, so it does not interfere with too much family time. You do not need to book a tee time, just come along, drop a ball in the waiting rack (often there is no line up at all and you can just walk on). On a weekend the cost is $16.00. It is one of the best kept secrets in the RM. No doubt when you first arrived, you noticed the extension on the parking lot office building. That area is for parking scooters for our citizens with limited mobility. There are plug-in facilities so that they can be charged while the owners are away from the beach. Council is taking steps to comply with the new accessibility legislation mandated by the province. Over the winter Recycle Everywhere offered our community collapsible bags to keep at your cottage for gathering your recyclables. The bags take up about 1 square foot of floor space and stand about 30 inches high. They have handles on them to make them easy to carry. We ordered 1500 so there are enough for every household to have one. All you need to do is stop by the Information gate building during normal operating hour which are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and pick one up. Sign for it (we must send a record back to Recycle Everywhere). The bags are free for the taking. We hope they will make recycling more convenient for you. (And while not trying to sound like a broken record, our recycling is hand sorted. Please make the job of the workers easier by rinsing out your bottles and jars, removing the lids from plastic bottles and squashing them, and flattening your boxes.) Have a good summer Victoria Beach Reeve and Council

Swim Staff Bios:

Lanette Griffith Hello! I am excited to be back for another amazing year out at the cottage! I recently graduated from University of Manitoba with my Bachelor of Education. I will be working as a grade 4/5 teacher next year in Winnipeg. I am excited to spend time this summer jumping off the pier and I am looking forward to watching the Olympic Games out at the cottage with my family. My favourite Olympic sport is swimming (of course!)

Cameron Russell Coming out of a solid year of school, I’m excited for my third summer of working with the VB crew. During my first year studying sciences at the u of w, I picked up Ultimate Frisbee and became a legend. Now that I’m one of the veterans of the staff, I’m hoping to set as good an example as my predecessors did for me. I’m looking forward to seeing all the new and returning swimmers and whipping them into shape.

Laura Conrad Hi I’m Laura and I’m very excited to be back for my second year as a swim instructor! I recently graduated from JH Bruns Collegiate and will be attending the University of Manitoba in the fall. I swam competitively for five years and so I am excited to pass on my swimming knowledge! I love going to the Sand Cliffs while I’m at my cottage! My favourite Olympic sports are swimming and track and field!

Season $36.00

Tess Poulton Hi, I’m Tess and I’m back for another great year of swimming! I’m entering grade 12 as the secretarytreasurer of Oak Park High School. I’m super excited to spend another summer at Victoria Beach, pier jumping and eating dream cookies. I love being active and participating in all sports. The Olympics are coming up, and besides swimming, I’m most excited to watch the hurdles. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick up on some technique to improve my own race. I hope to see everyone at the swim dock!

Kayleigh Russell Hi, I’m Kayleigh! I’m a French Immersion student at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate in Winnipeg. I’ll be going into grade 12 in the fall. I spent this past year teaching swimming lessons at the Rady JCC and I’ve been swimming with the St. James Seals Swim Club since the third grade. My favourite Olympic event to watch is diving and I’m really looking forward to being a part of the VB swim staff this summer!

I’ve been going to VB for as long as I can remember and it’s always been such an awesome experience and I can’t wait to have an amazing summer 2016!

VB Swim Program 2016 continued... Know medical insurance numbers for each registrant Bring cash or cheque book Know relevant medical conditions of each registrant (asthma, allergies, etc) Know expected date of arrival/ departure (see below) Bring your own pen or pencil (highly recommended) STEP 1/AREA 1 – Choose Your Classes Pick up a registration form and a swim program policy statement from the first table as you enter or from an instructor outside if you arrive early. Check out the big program schedule poster to find your preferred classes and see how classes are filling up. Please read the policy document THOROUGHLY, then complete and sign your registration form.

*Again, we are asking you to “know” your expected date of departure. Too often we have found that a child will suddenly greet the instructor with “Today is my last day!” Of course the instructor, not having known this, has not prepared a progress report, and is unable to complete one while teaching that day’s lesson. We hope to eliminate this problem by asking for this date in advance. The date is not intended to be binding. You are free to change your mind, though we will still require two or three days’ notice if you decide to leave earlier than your stated date. *If you cannot attend Registration Day, our Head Swim Instructor, Lanette Griffith, will be available for swimming registrations

and the purchase of VB Club Memberships daily at the Swim Dock from 9:00-11:00 am (at the Clubhouse if it is raining). The above fees apply. The base rate for Red Cross Swim Kids is $25.00 for three weeks or any part thereof. Please ensure that you have your copy of the VB Club membership form, medical insurance numbers and either cash or cheque payment. *Looking forward to seeing you on Swim Registration Day, Sunday, July 3rd from 10am – 12pm @ the Clubhouse. If possible, please use line-up time to complete your cheques. * As usual, we will do our best to have the various areas well labeled, but we rely on our experienced VBers to help anyone looking overwhelmed. Thank you in advance. *Please note that persons in default of payment from last year will not be allowed to register this year until their accounts are cleared by cash payment.

Victoria Beach HERALD

Victoria Beach Club – 2016 Membership The July long weekend is upon us and we are very excited for another fantastic summer at Victoria Beach! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. This year, we are pleased to offer six weeks of programming. You will be able to see the full line-up in the Calendar of Regular and Special Events (printed in PINK this year), which is provided with the purchase of a family membership. Membership Benefits The Victoria Beach Club, an organization of volunteers, sponsors and coordinates many of the recreational programs and events held during the summer in this beautiful lakeside community. The Recreational Programs offered include swimming, tennis and golf lessons, yoga, aerobics, mixed-bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen-nights and family recreation nights – just to name a few. Some of the Special Events offered are: Sports Day, Beach Events, the Sandcastle Building Contest, the Cross-Country Run, the Masquerade, the Dog Show, as well as open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer and volleyball. The Club is also responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the Recreation Director, the Recreation and Tennis Court Assistants, the Librarians and certified Swimming Instructors. A major source of revenue to provide these programs and events is the sale of memberships, and so to participate in the above programs and activities, a membership or day-pass is required. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach so special. Please support the V.B. Club by purchasing one or more memberships for your family and any visitors you may expect. To help the Club out even more, in addition to buying your membership, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Club (a tax-receipt will be provided for donations of $20 or more). Should you not need a membership, perhaps you could still consider making a donation to the Club, to help maintain the

cherished traditions of V.B. This year memberships again will be $50 per family (a great bargain for seven weeks of programming!). A single Family is defined as parent(s) and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters. If additional memberships are needed after the Membership Drive, they can be purchased at the V.B. Info Booth (at the Gate), at the Library or at the Tennis Courts during their regular hours. The family membership is valid for the whole seven weeks. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships can be purchased by cottage owners, as well as by renters, guests and cottagers in other beach communities – essentially, by anyone who wishes to participate in the V.B Club’s programs and activities. A membership also entitles you to voting privileges (one vote for each $50 membership). Please remember that wristbands must be worn to all V.B. Club activities and programs in order to participate. Each family member will receive a RED wristband upon the purchase of a membership. Note to Parents – please consider writing your child’s name on their wristband in case it is left behind at an event. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00 at the library and tennis courts. Where do I buy a family membership? The door-to-door V.B. Club Membership Drive will take place from July 1st – July 3rd. Over this weekend, volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($15 per person). To obtain your shoe tag, please take your membership application receipt to the tennis courts. We will also be selling the yoga memberships for $15 this year. Please take your membership form to your first yoga class to receive your purple wristband. We will also be selling memberships at the following times; Clubhouse, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am on Saturday, July 2nd Tennis Courts and Library, during their regular business hours Information Booth at the VB Gate, during their business hours (8:00 am – 8:00 pm), Clubhouse, from 10:00 am – noon on Sunday, July 3rd. Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be made payable to The Victoria Beach Club. The Victoria Beach Club will be offering daypasses again this year. These passes will be available at the Tennis Courts, Library, and Information Booth at the VB Gate during their regular hours, at a fee of $5.00 each, and will allow the wearer to participate in all Club activities and programs for the day, as if they had a seasonal membership. The passes are for individuals, and are valid for the date for which they are marked only; wristbands may be purchased in advance, but the dates will be written on the wristbands by staff at the time of purchase. The Calendar of Regular and Special Events will not be included with the purchase of day-pass wristbands. Volunteers are always needed for the Membership Drive! If you are interested please contact Monica at 204 461 1694. We are currently seeking 15 more volunteers for routes. Have a wonderful summer everyone and see you on the beach! Cheers from your membership team, Monica White, Darcie Reimer and Jen Campbell

Searching For the 200m Open Swim Trophy

~ BEACH PEOPLE ~ Annual VB & East Beaches Winter Picnic

February was the scene of another great time together in Mesa, Az. It was a perfect day & we had a rousing game of bean bag toss. There is a lot of completion for the coveted title & the winners were Ab Hansford & Heather Vate. They were presented with a plaque donated by Dan Sernyk. Many thanks to our gracious hosts Sharon& Glen Torgerson for having us in their home. Looking forward to next February! Betty Hansford The Wilson family would like to send our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all the volunteers and career emergency staff from Victoria Beach to Pine Falls to H.S.C. Winnipeg. On Sunday June 5th, we experienced a medical emergency at our cottage. All of the attending personnel were dedicated, attentive, and kept our family calm during this time. There are not enough words that can be said to thank all of these ‘heroes’. These heroes were an integral part in our wife/mom/nanny walking out of H.S.C. on Thursday June 9th.

After Keenan Teghtsoonian won the 200m Open Swim in 2015 he spent some time trying to track down the trophy that, unfortunately, was not returned to the event. He looked back at previous editions of the Herald to see that the 2014 winner was Dan Gibson. We do not know Dan and were unable to track him down to find the trophy. We would like to be able to bring the trophy to this year’s 200m Open Swim scheduled for Saturday July 16th. Dan, if you are out there, or if anybody knows where the 200m Open Swim trophy is located, will you please contact me at dtex@mts.net and I would be happy to pick it up. Thankyou in advance. Dave Teghtsoonian

Victoria Beach Yacht Club Update

Columbus set sail in 1492 to find a new route to the orient. He sailed off into the unknown with little more than a stout ship, some cloth sails and a keen sense of adventure. Unbeknownst to him he would make an important discovery, the new world. Although sailing technology has come a long way since then and your risk of getting scurvy is greatly diminished (we have lemonade!), the principles and sense of adventure endure. The following sailing school programming will be offered in 2016: • Youth and Adult CANSail: ages 14 and up 9am to 12 pm • Advance Optimist (Opti) CANSail: ages 7-13, 9am to 12 pm • Beginner Optimist CANSail: ages 7-13, 1pm to 4 pm All of the above programming will run concurrently on the following weeks in 2016: • July 4 – 8 • July 18-22 • July 25-29 • August 1-5 Spots are going fast so head to www.vbyc.ca to reserve a place today. Club racing happens every weekend with regattas on long weekends. We are always looking for crew so please come by the club on a weekend and express your interest and we will have you flying on a catamaran in no time. Due to last summer’s successful Yacht Club Dance on the August Long Weekend, we are happy to announce that we will be hosting the event again this year on Sunday July 31st. Keep an eye out for advertisements in the Herald and posted around the community later this month.

Come out and try the sport of sailing. You might not discover a new world but you will discover a challenging sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime.

The Brokenhead Wetlands: Wild Orchids and More!

Local interpretive trail now open

By Karen Paul The grand opening the Brokenhead Wetlands interpretive trail on June 22 featured poignant messages about caring for wetlands, the many gifts of Mother Earth, sharing traditional knowledge, and the legacy we will all leave for our grandchildren. Chief Jim Bear, wearing a stunning hand-made vest depicting a yellow lady’s-slipper orchid along the trail, referred to the wetland project as a symbol of partnership and sharing in this year of reconciliation. In 2007, Debwendon Inc., a non-profit partnership of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation, Manitoba Model Forest and Native Orchid Conservation Inc., was formed to develop the trail, located within an ecological reserve. The province provided $1 million towards construction and ongoing maintenance is funded through a private donation by Eugene Reimer to the Winnipeg Foundation. The project is an example of sustainable development through eco-tourism. The self guided, wheelchair-accessible trail features 1.6 km of floating boardwalk that meanders through a balsam fir forest, a white cedar bog and a rare fen. Interpretive signs highlight the importance of this extraordinary wetland, and the biodiversity of the area which includes orchids, carnivorous and many other rare plants. Great bird sightings have been reported. Four nodes feature the cultural significance of the wetland to the local Ojibway and what it can teach us about Purpose, Respect, Balance, and Interconnection. For some 300 years, the Ojibway have collected medicinal plants, tea berries, and cedar from this area, a place of great cultural significance. Band members are keen to share their living classroom to foster appreciation of the how richly biodiverse wetlands capture and filter runoff before hitting our lake. 70% of southern Manitoba’s wetlands have already been lost. “The Ojibway teach us . . . that everything alive is interconnected and has a purpose to fulfill; we need to respect that purpose to maintain a balance in the world.” The trail is located 1.2 km south of the Hwy 12 turnoff to Beausejour on the west side of Hwy 59. Access to the trail is free. It is open daily from 8 AM to dusk until October 31st. Picnic tables, benches and toilets are available. Allow about two hours for your visit. No dogs please. Call Karen at 204 756 2527 (VB) if you are interested in a group guided tour from Victoria Beach. Visit debwendon.org for more information on visiting the trail and ways to support it.

Our 7th Annual cycling event will take place on Wednesday August 24th 2016, starting at the Gates at 7 a.m. Our 130 km journey down historic Hwy 59 concludes at the Travelodge (East) in Winnipeg. Our event is an important fundraiser for “The Children’s Wish Foundation.” If you enjoy cycling and like having fun please plan to join us!

CLASSIC MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT OUR “RIDE”

Don’t you have to be an elite cyclist in fantastic shape to do 130 Kms? The simple answer is no. If you can cycle at a pace of 20-25 kms per hour for an hour at a time you can do this ride. We break once an hour and ride as a group. We also take a lunch break at Skinners. Participants should have a Road or Hybrid Bicycle and do some distance training before the ride. The “8 at the Gate” cycling group offers great training rides and advice. Isn’t it difficult to raise the required minimum $600.00 in donations? It is actually easier than you would think. For a donation of $20.00 or more donors receive an official tax receipt. If you have any friends or family members that work in business, corporate donations can add up fast. Our event is for a great cause and many people are happy to donate. In most cases all you have to do is ask. Our event is a guaranteed good time! Just ask any of our former participants. Everyone who has ever cycled in our ride raves

about it. Some of the hi-lights of our day are - accomplishing the distance with a great group of people, enjoying lunch at Skinners, experiencing a non-stop Winnipeg Police full escort through downtown Winnipeg, enjoying a fantastic pool party at the Travelodge, and partaking in a delicious celebration dinner. Not to mention the chance to win incredible prizes provided by Alter Ego Sports! PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT OUR ENTRY DEADLINE IS JULY 4TH. ENTRY FORMS AND THE $75.00 ENTRY FEE MUST BE RECEIVED BY THIS DATE. YOU WILL THEN HAVE UNTIL RIDE DAY TO RAISE YOUR REQUIRED $600.00 IN DONATIONS! This year will be your best tennis year yet. All the programming for adults is still in place, the same as last year. You can still play tennis six times a week without having to arrange a game or make a phone call. Just show up. Mondays and Fridays for adult round robins. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, for GVS. Wednesdays, Hit with a Pro. How easy is that? No need to plan,

Victoria Beach HERALD

just show up. And again, this is where you will meet new players with the same passion for tennis as you. There is no pressure, no expectations, no commitment, only fun. For those who have been bitten by the tennis bug, one of the endless goals is to get better, much better. At VB we have the solution. We are so lucky to have a variety of excellent instructors to take your tennis to the next level. We have tennis lessons with the always upbeat Robert Kennedy. Robert has lessons for all levels and abilities, children and adults, with small class sizes for personalized instruction. This year Robert will only be available August 2. Once again, on Wednesdays, we are offering “Hit with a Pro”. Each week a visiting tennis professional will give small group Lessons. This year we are fortunate to start off with Jared Connell. Jared teaches at Taylor Tennis Club and is the high performance coach with Tennis Canada. Jared will be hosting a doubles drills clinic on July 6. Space for the lessons will be limited to 8 persons per session so sign up early. By the way, this year we are asking that you pay as you sign up. Doubles players, novice and advanced, can take advantage of Geoff Kirbyson’s Doubles Clinic being held on Wednesday, July 13. Geoff is one of the most winningest doubles players at VB and always has great tips to share. On July 26, we are excited to have Emerson Gusmini returning to VB. Emerson, who was a top level coach in Brazil, teaches at both Winnipeg Winter Club and Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. Also, on July 26, the Babolat representative, Darryl Manchulenko, will be hosting a free demo day where you can demo the latest racquets from Babolat. On August 3rd and 4th George and Kevin Kylar will be hosting two days of lessons. Sign up for one day if you like, or sign up for both days to get back to back, no nonsense instruction from Mr. Tennis. With George’s vast teaching experience, he will quickly pinpoint weaknesses and immediately get you hitting correctly. All three tennis pros are Tennis Canada Certified Level 3 coaches, the highest in the province. On Tuesday, July 26 we are offering “Adult Tennis Drills”.

Continued on Page 19

Victoria Beach HERALD

Best Year continued... This free, one hour, adult hitting clinic will enable you to practise and hone your basic tennis strokes. Balls will be fed by the court attendants to two lines of players. To make perfect practise, perfect, three of our local top players will help guide you in your stroke mechanics. This was extremely popular last year so signing up early is recommended. Something that was offered, but not taken advantage of last year, was videotaping of your tennis strokes. If during adult drills, you bring your video-capable smart phone or tablet, we will have a court attendant video your strokes for you. This allows you to see the minute adjustments that might be necessary for you to hit just like Federer. And you can view it all in the privacy of your own cottage. The two major technical advances in sport coaching are internet lessons and video analysis. Both have been pioneered by the golfing industry but are now being adopted by tennis. These could be a real benefit for tennis players. Always an important focus at VB is youth tennis programming. New last season for children 4 and up was “family tennis”. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:15 p.m.-7:15 p.m., court #1 was set up with three mini nets and low pressure balls for use by kids and their parents in a kid friendly atmosphere. What’s better than playing tennis with your child or grandchild? Kid-sized racquets are available to borrow. There should be no waiting, and the best thing is that you’ll be finished in time to make the movie at the clubhouse. For children ages 5-6, 7-9, and 10+, VB Tennis Club offers two free weekly tennis lessons from our Tennis Manitoba trained court attendants. These lessons have become very popular with up to 50 kids in each age group. One problem with dealing with such a large group is the wide variation in abilities. This year we will sub divide the group according to ability and assign each group to different instructors. This way we are hoping that the lessons can be better suited to individual skill levels. Also this year we will be offering two Rogers Rookie Tournaments

July 1, 2016

19

for kids aged 5-11. The first tournament will be July 7th, and will be run by a Tennis Manitoba instructor and our court attendants. The second tournament will be on Thursday, August 18, and run by a Tennis Manitoba instructor. The tournaments are part skills development, part fun activities, and part low competitive games, all done in a fun atmosphere. If your child is at a higher level or is ready for a bigger challenge, we are offering three, four day tennis camps during the week of July 1114. There will be three levels: intermediate, intermediate/advanced, and advanced. Each camp will be one hour in length, between 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. It is great to see the progress these juniors make in one week, and as you watch them play, you know that in 10 years, they will be the players competing for our VB trophies. These camps will be taught by local sports psychologist and tennis pro, Stephen Dubienski. So, with all of these activities and lessons for every age and level, I hope you’ll agree, that summer 2016 is going to be your best tennis season yet.

Victoria Beach Club Multi-Prize Raffle Saturday July 30 10-4 pm

Dana Poulton Hi, my name is Dana Poulton and I will be entering grade 10 at Oak Park High School. My family and I have been coming to Victoria Beach for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved participating in all the activities Victoria Beach has to offer. Of course, one of my favourites was volunteering in the Library. This year I’m thrilled to be one of the Victoria Beach Librarians and look forward to helping you find the perfect summer read. See you in the Library!!!

VB Library is Opening Monday! Hi everyone, and welcome back! Hope you all had a fantastic year! The time for relaxing on the beach with a good book is finally here again. The library is opening on Monday July 4th, and this year’s librarians are Grace and Dana. Books can be checked out for two weeks at a time. The cost for taking out books is 25 cents for children’s and 50 cents for adult books. If you return you books on time you will receive half of what you originally paid! You will need a wristband to check out books, so make sure you bring it with you when you visit us at the library. There are still quite a few overdue books from last season, so if you could return those before you take out any new books that would be great. You can return books during our hours of you could drop them off through the slot on the library door. Library hours for the upcoming season are as follows: Monday 11am-12pm and 7-8pm Tuesday 10am-12pm Wednesday 11am-12pm and 7-8pm Thursday 10am-12pm Friday 10am-12pm Saturday 10am-12pm Sunday 12pm-1pm Hope to see you all this summer! Two Organizations Connected in Caring for Lake Winnipeg

The Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) and Victoria Beach’s Walk for Water Team salute Debwendon Inc., the non-profit partnership responsible for the construction of the impressive Brokenhead Wetlands Interpretive Trail, which celebrated its grand opening last week. This trail, approximately a 20 minute drive from Victoria Beach, will give people the opportunity to view the botanical wonders that flourish in the vast Brokenhead Wetland Ecological Reserve. Debwendon’s values and goals are totally in sync with those of the LWF: both organizations recognize the importance of preserving

our wetlands (which, among other beneficial functions, purify water before it enters Lake Winnipeg), and both organizations consider wetlands areas to be enjoyed – not exploited. You too can show that your environmental values and goals are in sync with those of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the health of Lake Winnipeg, by supporting VB’s annual Walk for Water, a fundraising event exclusively in support of the LWF. This year’s Walk will take place on Sunday, August 7. Registration will begin at 9:15 at the VB Clubhouse; the Walk will start at 10. Once again, there will be 2 routes from which to choose: 2.5 km or 5 km – and treats and draw prizes will follow the Walk! Pledge forms will be available during the first week in July at all key Victoria Beach locations and at Saffie’s in Albert Beach. They are also available online at lakewinnipegfoundation.org. Though walking the Walk is fun and invigorating, it certainly is not the only way you can support this important event. You can pledge $ to a walker (or 2) or you might choose to simply make a donation to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF). (If you select the latter, please indicate that your donation is being made in conjunction with VB’s Walk for Water event.) For more information, contact Deanne McDonald (204 756 2911 or deamcd@mymts. net), Sandy McCaig (204 756 8855 or sandy.mccaig@gmail. com), or Breda Vosters , LWF’s Summer Outreach Coordinator (204 956 0436 or events@ lakewinnipegfoundation.org)

Tennis Etiquette

Of all sports, tennis is famous for its etiquette. While sticking to a bunch of rules about how to behave on a tennis court might sound stuffy and old-fashioned, tennis etiquette actually makes the sport more enjoyable and will make you more fun to share a court with. The most important thing is to HAVE FUN and relax when playing tennis! It’s a game, and should be enjoyed as such. Here they are as I see it. Avoid loud grunting, yelling, or loud talking when playing. It can be very annoying and uncomfortable for others and never swear. Don’t interrupt games on neighboring courts for any reason. Wait until a point is over to walk past a court or retrieve a ball. If a ball rolls into your court from an adjacent court, stop rallying if you have not begun to play. Return the ball immediately. If you are in the process of completing a point, and the ball disturbs either you or your opponent, stop playing immediately and call a “let”. Replay the point. If you are able to play on, return the ball as soon as the point has been completed. Our courts do not have individual entrances. So it’s necessary to walk across a court to get to yours or to get off your court. When preparing to enter the court, please wait quietly at the gate, with your partners, until the players on the courts nearest the gate have finished a point. Then, quickly go to your assigned court, ensuring that you are not moving behind a court where a point is in play. If you are playing Doubles, the four players should enter and exit together, if singles two. Wait until the point is over then move quickly along the fence line to your own court. Make sure you completely close the gate so the gate does not become a hazard or balls roll out. Servers should keep the score throughout the game. The server should announce the score at the start of each game and each subsequent point in each game. If the ball is out or it’s a fault, call it immediately and clearly.

Victoria Beach HERALD

You are supposed to call all balls that bounce on your side of the net. Never call a ball on your opponent’s side of the net unless your opponent asks you for help in deciding on how to call it. Make all line calls promptly and accurately; never challenge a call made by your opponent or partner. In doubles, you should not call balls wide if you are on the far sideline and your partner is closer to the ball. Most likely, your partner has a better angle to judge whether it landed in or out, so rely on your teammate’s judgment. Similarly, let your partner make the call if you are receiving a serve and your teammate is standing near the service line. He has a better angle to see the ball, and you should trust that he will make the right call. Close calls. If you cannot clearly tell whether your opponent’s shot is in or out, it’s in. You must be 100 percent sure you’re making the correct call, so the benefit of the doubt goes to your opponent if there’s any uncertainty on your part. This are some of the basic rules of tennis etiquette that we should all follow.

Unbelievably Brilliant Changes for VB Tennis All programming will now start at 11:00 a.m. This will create additional prime time for the morning players and will further move activities to when the courts are less crowded. This will be consistent throughout the week to make your planning for the rest of your day easier. Remember it is all about you. We have also kept activities on Mondays and Fridays to a minimum to free up court time for those whose work schedule enables them to enjoy long weekends during the summer. Due to the heavy demand for courts, we will try a new court accounting system at the kiosk in an effort to be more precise when predicting when your court will be available. If wait times for a court are longer than 45 minutes, we will tweet on vbtennisclub and then tweet again when they are less than 45 minutes. On the VB tennis calendar you will find superscript numbers1 after an activity. These will indicate how many courts will be used for that activity. This way you can see how many courts are available for free play. We now have a dog’s water dish for our best friends. Unfortunately, still too small for Roscoe. Sorry, no recycling bin yet; we are still working on it. Hoping these changes will help everyone.

VB Club Tennis Rules Good sportsmanship, courtesy and fair play are expected from players at all times. Shoe tags, shirts and non-marking tennis shoes must be worn at all times. Maximum playing time is 30 minutes for singles and 45 minutes for doubles when other players are waiting for a court. Non-members must pay a daily court fee of $5.00. Members will be given priority for court time from 8am to 11am. Any player who is abusive to a tennis court attendant shall have his/her playing privileges suspended by the VB Club Executive. Members who do not abide by the club rules may have their membership revoked. RULES WHILE COURT ATTENDANTS ARE ON DUTY Players will sign in with court attendant, providing their names and shoe tag numbers. No player presently on the courts can sign up for another court time. Players on a court cannot extend their time or sign up for another court until they have been bumped by another group. If you are not present when your name is called for a court, you may lose your place in the rotation and have to sign up again. Children need only a wristband, and not a VB tennis shoe tag, to participate in VB tennis lessons, Rogers Rookie tournaments, and pro lessons. All children must have a shoe tag, or purchase a day pass, if they wish to play on court. Children must be members of the VB club and have a shoe tag to play in the VB Junior tournament

charitable organizations and we loaded two more vehicles. As a result of these last minute efforts, a number of local not-for-profit organizations benefitted from many of the items that were not sold. We are very pleased that the Spence Street Thrift Shop is once again willing to come to Victoria Beach and is sending a small van to be loaded with appropriate items for their store.

VB FLEA MARKET

“Reuse, Renew and Recycle” SATURDAY, July 9th 12:30 pm–2:30 pm at the Victoria Beach Community Clubhouse Once again, here is a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Community Club and to pass on your treasures that are in good condition and need a new home. Last year, our Victoria Beach Community raised over $3000.00 for our clubhouse and all its diverse programs. As your retiring flea market conveners this year, we hope that everyone will continue to support this important VB Community Club event. Last year ten terrific truck driver teams came to help with the early morning transport and over 111 committed volunteers arrived to begin the challenging job of setting up, sorting, pricing and selling treasures. Later in the day, many volunteers returned to help our charity and clean up teams find new homes for the remaining articles. A very special thanks is extended to all of these wonderful VB volunteers especially the seven caring charity van volunteers, our clean up crew, our dedicated VB recreation team, our generous VB business sponsors, our friends at the VB Herald, the RMVB Council and our VB Public Works staff. Every effort was made last year and will be made this year to “Reuse, Renew and Recycle” and to avoid sending valuable items to the dump. The Formidable Clean Up is still our greatest challenge at the Flea Market. Unfortunately most of the charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding area are no longer able to make the trip to pick up our larger treasures, especially the charities that are trying to care for refugees arriving in Manitoba. If anyone at Victoria Beach could acquire a large moving van for us, we would be most appreciative. As well, we need more volunteers who would be willing to deliver unsold treasures to a charity of their choice in Manitoba and/or help us load the cars that our guest charities have provided. Last year we helped load two small vans for our guest charity – The Spence Street Thrift Shop, an inner city agency that offers pregnancy and family support services in Winnipeg. Additional volunteers stepped forward to help salvage items for other

There are two large charitable organizations that could not pick up from Victoria Beach on the day of our flea market, but would welcome donations of our unsold household items to their large warehouses during the week. They are Centre Flavie-Laurent450 Provencher Blvd. open Mon.to Fri. 8:30 am-3:30 pm and Sat. 9:00 am-noon and Oyate Tipi Cumini Yape – 606 Selkirk Ave. open Mon. to Fri. 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Another charity, Hands of Hope (204 261-8607) has a smaller warehouse and fewer volunteers, so they’d like people to phone them before delivery so that they’ll be sure to have a volunteer to meet them. These three organizations give the items away to needy people, rather than selling them. If you might be willing to take a van or carload into the city on a day of your choosing, please contact Mavis Whicker for additional information at mwhicker@mts.net or at the beach 756-2894. As well, if you are willing to join the Formidable Clean Up Crew, please contact Lorraine Cook at growingupgreat@gmail.com and/or join us at 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm on Saturday, July 4th at the Clubhouse Our next Flea Market challenge is the Sunrise Set Up. If you are willing to get up early in the morning, just “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick ups, set up, etc. between 8 am and 10:30 am … the earlier, the better. Hopefully a few more volunteers will join us earlier this year, as it can be a little frightening being Home Alone at VB Clubhouse in the wee morning hours. Volunteer group photo is still planned for 12:00 noon. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise –pick up trucks, antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc. Volunteers may arrive to help anytime after 8:00 am on Saturday morning and are free to stay as long or as little as you like. If you have a pick up truck, please contact Deb Covernton at 7563505 to register as you will need a special entrance pass. Bring a partner or a crew if possible and pick up your assigned route sheet so that we do not miss anyone. Remember to bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew. We’ll supply the latex gloves for those volunteers who are sorting our treasures. VB Community outside the restricted area who wish to have items picked up, please call Deb with your address and we will try to accommodate you. Please put your articles out by 8 am Saturday morning, July 9th. Regretfully articles put out on Friday evening often disappear. Please note that the Flea Market will only accept small electrical appliances that are in good working order and CSA approved. Please box your books and label separately for the book sale on Sunday. The following items will NOT BE PICKED UP: life jackets, mattresses, sofas, love seats, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, electric fry pans, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, building supplies, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, gas BBQs and please … no dirty or broken items and sorry, no clothing! If you have a questionable treasure, please call Joanne at 891-1602 for advice before Saturday. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Ladies VB Golf Tournament Sign-up Starts July 5 The annual Ladies VB Golf Tournament is on Wednesday, July 27th with sign-up starting on July 5 at the golf course. Do not delay since the draws (8:30 AM and 11:30 AM) fill up quickly. Registration fee is $15.00 per person plus green fees ($14.00) only if you are not a member of the VB Golf Course. All participants must be 18 and over. If you compared this to any other golf tournament entry free, this is an incredible deal! You can sign-up individually or as a team. The idea is just to mix, mingle and have fun! Payment is required when you register. Like last year, we will hold the “Golf Wind-up” at the new VB Community Centre on Hwy 59. Prizes, draws, and a silent auction will take place at the centre while participants visit and enjoy some refreshments including a complimentary glass of wine and an array of appetizers catered by the Merrymakers. Wind-up is from 2:30-4:30 PM. Like last year, we have chosen to donate all proceeds from our tournament to the VB Community Centre. It’s exciting to see the building progress over the winter and to know we played a small part in that! We certainly would be most grateful for any prize donations to add to our silent auction in support of our fundraising portion of the tournament. Your donation can be dropped off at the golf course, anytime. Last year we introduced a committee approach for organizing this event with each of us committed to a 3-year term to help share the workload. I would like to welcome Diane Eyford this year to our committee, which includes Laureen Johnstone, Sally Lawler and myself. Submitted on behalf of the 2016 Organizing Committee, Heather Willoughby

V.B. Club Fitness & Yoga 2016

The V.B. Club has planned another action-packed fitness schedule this year, and there are a few important changes to note: 1. Due to the increasing popularity of yoga, it will now be offered three times a week in the Clubhouse, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while Aerobics or Total Body Conditioning (TBC) classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All classes will begin at 10:00 a.m. as usual; yoga practices will be 90 minutes in duration, ending at 11:30 a.m., and the Tuesday/Thursday fitness classes will be 60 minutes long, ending at 11:00 am. 2. In order to continue to provide highly qualified and experienced yoga instructors, the V.B. Club will introduce a yoga wristband for $15 for V.B. Club Members. This yoga wristband, like tennis shoe-tags, can be purchased from your canvasser along with a membership in the V.B. Club and purchasers will be given a purple yoga receipt; the wristband itself can then be

picked up at the Clubhouse during Swimming Registration or during the 15 minutes prior to any yoga class with presentation of the purple yoga receipt. Yoga wristbands can also be purchased just before any yoga class, provided that a copy of your V.B. Club Membership application is shown (either the pink or yellow copy, which will be returned to you). For purchases at yoga, please bring either a cheque made out to the V.B. Club or exact change. Day-pass holders can also participate in yoga, and these can be purchased at the Clubhouse just prior to yoga classes as well. Please bring a mat, towel and water bottle to all classes. For TBC classes, you may wish to bring your own tubing band – although Julie will have extras, sometimes there aren’t enough for everyone in attendance. Please wear your purple yoga wristband for all yoga classes and either the purple yoga wristband or red V.B. Club wristband for other fitness classes. VB COUNTRY MARKET IS BACK FOR A 3RD YEAR!

You don’t know what you might find on any Saturday at the market. Some of your favorite vendors have signed on for the whole summer, while others are going to “test the market” and come only a few Saturdays to see how it goes. This year, a second market garden producer, Braman’s Greens, joins The Veggie Wagon, Greg with his Organic produce, and the returning Junior Entrepreneurs. We have Norwex, Aggassiz Honey, Wild rice, preserves, patio & yard décor, sewing, knitting, photographs … lots of gift options for your friends and yourself! Home based businesses are thriving and we have several gals bringing lotions, potions and creams. Apparently VB cottagers like to eat healthy, be healthy (and smell good)! There is always room for more. Contact Margaret at 204-756-2181 or mmurrayhaddad@gmail.com for registration and Market guidelines. Plan to visit often, so that you don’t miss out on the specialty and unique products and décor that only comes to you here. The Victoria Beach Community Centre benefits. You get to shop and perhaps stop for breakfast in a relaxed way that only happens here at the lake. SEE YOU AT THE MARKET!
