Eight at the Gate

From the archives; left to right Nadine, Bob, Wendy (do I have my helmet on right), Mike and Marv From a small group of local riders and visitors from Canmore and Brandon we have grown to over 100 riders from Vancouver to Halifax. We are joined by riders from California, Florida, Switzerland and even from Saskatchewan. Rider profiles range from ex-Olympians, serious racers, downhill mountain bikers, roadies, triathletes, adventure riders, retreaded runners to beginners taking their first steps in a lifetime sport. We leave from the gate at 08:00 every morning and ride to Lester Beach via Hwy #59, Albert Beach, Pitt Rd, Traverse Bay Rd N/Hillside Rd and Lakeshore Rd. Group sizes vary, from two to twenty, weather permitting. The pace varies as well, with some riders training for serious competitions while others will ride at a “conversational” pace. For coaching, encouragement, equipment help and a great workout, join us! Contact Bob Marshall cell 204 261-4292 // VB 204 7568255 // email jmarsa@mymts.net. Find us on Facebook at “eightatthegate”.

President’s Message Welcome back to the beach! July is upon us and the sounds of the beach and the busy playground are music to our ears! My name is Sheri Hyra and I have held the position of Director at Large on the Victoria Beach Club Board for the last 2 years. It has been eye opening to see the workings of the VB Club from the inside out. Much of the planning occurs during the winter and spring months. From program planning, hiring, popcorn machine rental to who can deliver the industrial order of toilet paper, big and small tasks are taken on with enthusiasm. New projects such as online memberships are exciting, bringing board members, committee members and other volunteers together to bring new services to VB. Thanks to all who had a hand in this new endeavour! The July long weekend is an exciting time; the end of school and the beginning of summer. As the wheels get turning at VB, you may hear the knock on your door from the membership committee as they canvas the community selling memberships. Please wear your wrist bands proudly to all club activities. The membership fees help fund the programming made available over the summer. If you happened to purchase your membership online, don’t forget to pick up your calendar, wrist bands and tennis tags at the parking lot from 9am till noon on June 30 and from 9 am to noon on July 1. You can also purchase your memberships at the clubhouse during swimming registration on Sunday, July 1 from 10am to noon.

Victoria Beach HERALD

Do you need a beach bike? The bike auction is on June 30 at 1 pm at the police station. Tennis tags are available at the tennis courts anytime. You will need them for the doubles clinic and Girls’ Tennis Day coming up next week. As mentioned above, swim registration is on July 1 at 10 am at the clubhouse. By July 2, you will see our summer employees at various activities in their navy t-shirts. They are key in the delivery of the summer programming provided at VB. Some are new and some have worked at Victoria Beach in previous years. Feel free to say hi or ask them questions. They will be the ones keeping your kids busy this summer! Programming starts on the morning of Monday, July 2 so send your kids to games at the sports grounds and swimming lessons. Let the games begin! Looking forward, one of the big events of the summer is the 30+ dance on July 28. Tickets are now available from Geoff Kirbyson (204-7710973) or Suzy Cramp (204-292-0397). The theme is “Jamaica Me Crazy” and the band will be the same as last year (Hitboss). Tickets sell fast for this event! Of course the main attraction this weekend is the fireworks display, organized by Rob Hester. It will take place at 10:45 pm on Sunday, July 1. Be sure to scout out a spot with a good view. Best places to see the show are at Yacht Club Beach or Redwing Park. What a great way to celebrate Canada and start the summer! CONTINUED on NEXT PAGE

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 93rd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

The possibilities at VB are endless. Whether you love to be active and involved, or whether you prefer the quiet, relaxing life (or a bit of both!), enjoy your time here. It takes many hands, hearts and minds to make Victoria Beach run the way it does. Consider joining a committee or even the Victoria Beach Club board (my position will be open at the end of the summer!). If that’s not your thing, then smile and thank a volunteer. Have an amazing long weekend!

Welcome to Doctor Carry Martens-Barnes We would like to welcome Dr. Carry Martens-Barnes back to Victoria Beach. Council Corner

Unionization of Public Works Staff As most of you are aware, in the winter of 2016-2017 a new public works building was erected providing new, clean, heated facilities for our public works employees. Our Public Works employees decided to follow the example of employees in the neighbouring RM of Alexander and approach the Operating Engineers of Manitoba, Local 987 to act in their interest. Notice was given to Council in February 2017. The Association of Manitoba Municipalities executive came to a council meeting shortly afterward. They strongly advised us to hire lawyers to negotiate the first contract as none of us are experienced negotiators and a first contract effects a community for years to come. Negotiations began in the summer. Our CAO, Assistant CAO and one lawyer met with the team from the Operating Engineers of Manitoba and a representative from Public Works to formalize the terms and conditions of employment, the benefits and the wage scale. Any of you involved in union negotiations know this is a slow process. It went on through the autumn and winter. The parties were unable to reach an agreement. On May 22, 2018 the matter was presented at the Labour Board where a first collective agreement was imposed on the parties. A one-year contract is now in place. Our Public Works employees are now members of the Operating Engineers of Manitoba, Local 987. The negotiations were prolonged, and we have incurred large legal bills, but we needed professional advice. Our CAO and Assistant CAO were diverted from their other duties for much of the winter. WEBSITE INFO - For the past two years the RM has been encouraging you to subscribe to our email alert system E-News. Please visit our website at rmofvictoriatbeach.ca to sign up for your E-News. Book Sale

The summer is just getting started, but maybe there’s still some spring cleaning to be done at your cottage! We don’t judge! In fact, we welcome with open arms any and all books hanging around from last season or seasons long gone! Make sure to pass on the power of organized words, ideas, and information to your fellow VBers by donating your books to the Victoria Beach Club Book Sale. The sale will be at the Clubhouse on Sunday, July 8th from 1-3 p.m. The profits will go towards the improvement and stocking of the VB Club Library, as well as various other VB Club initiatives. The Flea Market team will be collecting your books that are ready for new hands along with your Flea Market donations. Please make sure to put out the items before 8 a.m. in a secure container like a box or a plastic bag. Remember to be mindful of the weather so that if it’s rainy, you can cover your donations accordingly. We would appreciate a clear separation between Flea Market and Book Sale donations. Last but not least, we’re putting out a call for volunteers! If you have some time to spare on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for set-up or after 3 for clean-up, then come on down to the Clubhouse! New and returning volunteers are welcome. Extra hands make light work! Thank you for supporting the Victoria Beach Library!

Resident Council Meeting Report Below the Herald presents a summary of the VB Council meeting held on June 19th at the Senior Scene. More detail can be found on the RM of VB website. After introductions and usual agenda items, the focus for the evening was directed to a new Contractor, Tim Maunder, of Janus Municipal Solutions, previously an instructor at Red River Community College. A Level 4 Water Plant Operator with over 30 years of experience as a Level 4 Water Plant Engineer. For the 50 plus in attendance, Tim, of Janus Municipal Solutions, explained what he found: a decaying and patchwork system, and how the system was failing on multiple levels due to deterioration, age, inferior repair parts, etc. Although recent staff concerns were on the minds of those in attendance, it was clear that the RM was not in compliance with many Government regulations and guidelines that have been put in place over the past several decades. Workplace Safety and Health, and other Regulatory bodies require the RM to be registered, and to pull permits to dig, which could not be located. No maps were found to enable tracing leaks and this made pressurizing difficult. Property owners were assured we will be in compliance as quickly as possible. His full report on the challenges facing the RM for its water treatment, will be placed on the RM website. With the threat of huge fines, and more legal engagement, change of how this system is maintained will be set right. And it comes with a cost. A list of these costs was presented by Council in the Public Works report, with no further discussion. Other large expenditures, such as legal fees, were discussed when Councillor Buchanan presented a Resolution to require Council to have the use of lawyers approved on an issue by issue basis, given that the CAO cannot exceed his authorization cap, but has not been directed otherwise. This Resolution was ultimately tabled, to determine the impact on currently on-going issues. Councillor Buchanan presented a list of fees that took this

budget line well beyond its limit set for the year, with 7 months to go. The CAO explained the high use of legal assistance, citing the long negotiations for the first Union contract with Local 987 of the Operating Engineers, a Human Rights challenge, and the usual land transfers, personnel issues and other RM business. The rest of the agenda was followed with little discussion, with one exception. A letter listing many grievances was sent to Council, which had apparently spread throughout the community via email, the modern version of a telephone tree. Reeve Hodgson was clear that it required a response and rebuttal explanation and this should be put on the RM website for all to see. A motion to do this sparked some debate, questioning why a response to a piece of correspondence sent to Council should end up on the website, when it was not known how, how many or which constituents would be aware of it in the first place. A Recorded Vote was requested. Councillors McMorran and Buchanan voted against the response being published, declaring further they did not want their names to appear in support of the contents. The Motion was carried.

Hi, my name is Lexi Verrras, I’m going into grade 11 at Linden Christian School. My family has been coming to Victoria Beach my whole life. VB YOGA We are excited to welcome everyone back to the VB yoga program this summer! First of all, a big thank you to Pamela Beazley for all her efforts over the past few years convening and setting up the wonderful new yoga program at the clubhouse! We are grateful not only to have so many classes available, but also to have the opportunity to practice with a variety of skilled instructors. The yoga program at VB has personal significance to me, as it was started in the mid 70’s by my grandmother, Dorothy Gregory. A long-time cottager and later a resident of Victoria Beach; she led classes, workshops and retreats with the assistance of her daughter Ruth Gregory and long time student and friend, Jane Carroll. Jane eventually took over teaching for Dorothy in her later years. It feels pretty special to be a part of my grandmother’s yoga legacy here at VB as a third-generation yoga instructor. I am truly happy to be helping out with the yoga program this year, as it means a lot to be able to contribute to the ever-growing VB yoga community and to carry on what my grandmother Dorothy started some 40 years ago! This summer you will experience 9 different instructors; all highly trained and have achieved different levels of mastery in their own unique ways. Information about who will be teaching and the style of class you can expect will be featured in the Herald each week. July 2nd and 4th we will have Savannah Luff leading the practice. Savannah has been teaching yoga for over a decade at studios, festivals, workshops and retreats. She blends her knowledge of movement, breath-work and meditation with authentic storytelling and humour. Each class is unique and approachable for all yoga levels. Keith Macpherson will be back July 6th and will lead 2 classes. Following classes, he will have a brief talk and book signing on mindfulness. Keith is highly trained by some of the world’s best teachers in various styles of yoga, including Moksha, Hatha, Vinyasa, Power and Yin. He embraces both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga and incorporates intention setting and mindfulness into his transformative classes. Keith’s class is suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced, and you can expect to hear some beautiful live music during the class! You can buy your yoga wristband as an add-on to the regular VB club membership for $15 or at the door before yoga class. You can also do a drop-in class anytime for $5. Mairen Kops

VB FLEA MARKET

Saturday, July 7 • 12:30pm–2:30pm Victoria Beach Clubhouse

Welcome back to Victoria Beach… our happy place! Once again, here is your opportunity to donate to the Victoria Beach Club by gifting us your treasures. Last year, with the help of our VB Community & all the Volunteers we had the most successful Flea Market ever by raising over $3800 for our Victoria Beach Club. As the new flea market convener last year, I was overwhelmed & privileged to have so many members of the community come out & support this important VB Club event. The success of the Flea Market begins with Volunteers who can provide their own trucks to help with the early morning pick-up followed by Volunteers for unloading, setting-up, sorting, pricing & to work at the Flea Market event in the afternoon. Our Sunrise Set Up: If you are willing to join us early in the morning, please “Come on Down” to help with pick up, unloading, sorting, set-up & pricing items as this all starts at 8:00 am … the earlier you can come the better, as we are in desperate need of your help. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself & your area of expertise… antiques, artwork, electrical, furniture, linens, pricing, sporting goods, toys, etc... but please take note that DUE TO SAFETY, ALL Volunteers between 8:00am– 12:30pm (whether or not accompanied by an adult) MUST be of teenage years 13+ with NO EXCEPTIONS. Children 12 and younger are more than welcome to volunteer at the event from 12:30pm-2:30pm accompanied by their parent. If you are a Volunteer with a truck, please contact Joanne Parker Gibson at 204-891-1602 or jparkergibson@icloud.com by Friday, July 6th to register as you’ll be assigned a special gate pass & then on the Saturday please feel free to bring a buddy or crew and pick up your assigned route. A very important reminder to only put out your donated items in front of your property on Saturday, July 7th between 5:00am - 8:00am. Unfortunately, donations put out on the avenues Friday evening disappear and never make it to the Flea Market which then prevents us from receiving your fabulous donation. If you have items to donate in advance please email: lyndsidr@telus.net Also, very important if you are donating items for the Flea Market & the Book Sale please keep them CONTINUED on NEXT PAGE

in a SEPARATE box/bag and label them either Flea Market or Book Sale. Also, please note we can ONLY accept small electrical appliances that are CSA approved. Unfortunately, we can NOT PICK UP: life jackets, mattresses, sofas, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, BBQs and please … NO clothing or broken items! Environmentally Friendly Clean Up The Clean-up from 2:30pm-5:00pm is always a challenge after the Flea Market. We are looking to have as many unsold items donated to other organizations. Aside from the Spence Street Thrift Shop, the other charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas cannot make the trip to pick up items at the end of the day. We are looking for volunteers with a truck or van to help with the clean-up. You may take the items to a charity of your choice or drop them off at the skate building next to the VB Community Centre on Hwy 59, which will be open after the flea market until 5:00pm as the Merry Makers are hosting a rummage sale in the fall. So if you can help us out with the environmentally friendly clean up so no unsold items end up in the landfill please contact Jennifer Engbrecht who is one of our Clean-up Conveners at jennifersings@ mymts.net. Once again, I hope you’re all looking forward to this year’s Flea Market & I’m confident with the ongoing support and encouragement of our wonderful VB community, our 2018 VB Flea Market will be a resounding success for our Victoria Beach Club! Mark Your Calendars!!

The 2018 Victoria Beach and District Walk for Water in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) is happening on Sunday, August 12. As usual, registration will begin at 9:15 AM at the VB Clubhouse, and the 2.5 km Walk will start at 10. All ages are welcome! (Keep in mind that participants from outside the area will be allowed free parking in the VB lot that morning.) The LWF continues to speak out on behalf Lake Winnipeg on such issues as potentially harmful agricultural and municipal sewage treatment practices that threaten the health of our lake. At the same time, the LWF is energetically involved with projects that can improve Lake Winnipeg’s health. Recently, for example, it has been (and continues to be) hard at work recruiting and training volunteers for the Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network. So far, these “citizen scientists” have collected thousands of water samples from over 75 sites across Manitoba. Their aim is to identify phosphorous hotspots so as to

help address our lake’s problem with harmful algae. Please plan to support Lake Winnipeg by supporting this year’s Walk for Water either as a participant or as a donor. Pledge forms for walkers will become available during the first week in July at several Victoria Beach locations, at Saffie’s in Albert Beach and online at lakewinnipegfoundation.org. (If you choose to donate to the LWF either by cheque or online, please indicate that your donation is being made in connection with the 2018 VB and District Walk for Water.) *Please note that persons in default of payment from last year will not be allowed to register this year until their accounts are cleared by cash payment. *Again, we are asking you to “know” your expected date of departure. Too often we have found that a child will suddenly greet the instructor with “Today is my last day!” Of course the instructor, not having known this, has not prepared a progress report, and is unable to complete one while teaching that day’s lesson. We hope to eliminate this problem by asking for this date in advance. The date is not intended to be binding. You are free to change your mind, though we will still require two or three days’ notice if you decide to leave earlier than your stated date. *If you cannot attend Registration Day, our Swim Staff will be available for swimming registrations and the purchase of VB Club Memberships daily at the Swim Dock from 9:00-10:00

2018 Rec Staff Bios Hi my name is Julia and I will be your head rec assistant this summer! I am currently 19 years old and I just finished my second year of university. I am working towards a BFA at the University of Manitoba and hopefully in the future become an animator for Disney! I love to dance and participate in group workout classes. In the summertime I really enjoy reading a book on the beach, hanging out with family and friends and creating artwork. I am looking forward to another amazing summer at VB! Hi, my name is Jack Menec and I am very excited to be a Rec. Assistant this year! I am 16 years old and just finished grade 10 at St. Paul’s High school. I’ve grown up at Victoria Beach, attending Rec. activities, swimming, making friends and enjoying the summer for longer than I can remember. I play hockey for the Fort Garry Flyers, rugby for the St. Paul’s Crusaders, and I’d also say I’m a pretty decent fisherman too. Seeing my beauty of an older brother Parker as a Rec. Assistant has always made me want to be a part of the program as well. I am very excited for my first year and look forward to seeing everyone at the coming events this summer! Hi, my name is Karissa Bowden and I’m very excited to be a Rec Assistant again this year! This fall I will be going into grade 12 at Kelvin High School. I am a competitive dancer at Kickit Dance Studio, where I am also an assistant teacher. In my spare time, I enjoy sketching and photography. Some of my favourite things to do at VB are going on bike rides, getting treats at the bakery and spending time at the beach with a good book. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great summer!

Hi! My name is Tia Davison and I am very excited to be returning for my second summer as a Rec. Assistant. This upcoming fall I will be going into my final year at Shaftesbury High School and am looking forward to graduating with the class of 2019! I love playing both indoor and outdoor soccer and enjoyed being the libero on Shaftesbury’s varsity volleyball team. I had a blast last year being on the Rec. Staff and I learned quickly that the VB kids have quite the aim when it comes to throwing dodgeballs! If we haven’t met yet please don’t be shy and come say hi! I can’t wait for another fun-filled summer at Victoria Beach and am looking forward to seeing everyone participate at the activities! My name is Linnea Kosokowsky. I’m going into grade 11 at St. Mary’s Academy this fall. In the city, I love to play soccer and the piano. I’ve been going to VB my whole life, and it’s my favourite place! I love to play tennis and go for bike rides. My favourite item from the bakery is a pecan bun. I’m super excited to meet everyone and to have an awesome summer! Hi, my name is Andrew Kaul and this will be my first year being a Rec. Assistant. I just finished grade 11 at St. Paul’s High School and will be returning there for my grade 12 year. I have been coming down to Victoria Beach since I was a kid and grew up doing all the Rec events. Growing up I loved participating in all the events like sports day, sand castle building, bike race, junior tennis tournament, and all the teen events. My favourite parts of summer are to spend time with friends, playing lots and lots of tennis, and going to the beach. I am very excited to start a fun-filled summer with everyone! 2018 Rec Staff Bios Hi, I’m Dana Poulton. I will be entering grade 12 at Oak Park High School as incoming co-president in the fall. I love playing all different kind of sports and mainly just being active. I have been coming down to Victoria Beach for as long as I can remember and have always enthusiastically participated in all the activities Victoria Beach has to offer. Some of my favourites included arts and crafts, sports day, movie nights, and games where we played my all-time favourite game of world domination. My favourite memories from summer were all from when I was participating with the Victoria Beach Club activities. I’m looking forward to another wonderful summer filled with trips to the bakery, pier jumps, beach days, tennis games, and this summer the opportunity to be a rec assistant. I hope that I can help make your summer as special and memorable as mine are, here at Victoria Beach. See you at the games field!

My name is Abi Popel. I attend St. John’s Ravenscourt School and will be going into grade 11 this upcoming fall. Ever since I was a kid I had wanted to be a rec assistant, and this year I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be one! I have been vacationing on lake Winnipeg my entire life and bought a cabin in VB 6 years ago. I hope that this summer will be one of the best ones yet! My favourite things at VB include jumping off the pier and going to movie nights with my friends. I hope all of you have a fun and relaxing summer, can’t wait to see you at the events!

Long time cottage owner George Heffelfinger died peacefully on June 13 in Victoria BC. He was predeceased by his wife Jane in 2011. He will be remembered by old time cottagers for his beautiful rock garden, erudite articles about natural history in the Herald, and banjo hootenannies on the deck at 337 Sunset. Other memories include an ill-fated trip down the Red River on the SS Nutamis where they were stranded on a sandbar and had to be rescued by the coast guard, (Paul Grover and Tommy Rathwell), and adventurous weekend treks to outlying areas(Manatowagan) with pal Cec Grover and their combined broods in the back of Sam Ateah’s truck. The Grants, the Axworthys, the Grovers, the Westburys, the Knoxes, the Duffs, and so many more, count among special friends in the VB community. Lisa, Amanda, Park and their assorted offspring will be in residence at the cottage in both July and August.

Obituary

Bruce Edward Purdy

June 19, 1936 – February 20, 2018 After a long seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s, Bruce is at peace. Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Donna Thain, daughter Leanne Van Bergen (Phil) and two grandchildren, Derek and Amy to whom he held great pride. Predeceased by his first wife, Jacqueline in 1995, his parents (Louise and Ralph Purdy) and his brother Warren. Bruce was a graduate of Fine Arts from the U of M and spent his career working for two advertising firms as production manager (Foster and McKim). In retirement, he pursued his creative skills making pottery, working with stones and refinishing furniture as the illustrious “Male Stripper” of Victoria Beach. The best place to be, for Bruce, was Victoria Beach and as a member of the Ateah family, he spent every summer there. As a teenager he helped Uncle John with the mink ranch and later, the Parking Lot. In 1972, he had his own cottage built at Wanasing Beach. In 1955 Bruce played on the school curling team representing Manitoba in the Canadian Championship in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He skipped his own curling team at the Wildewood Club for many years. Golfing and cycling were other sports he enjoyed. Bruce and Donna enjoyed travel across Canada, USA, Europe, and New Zealand, as well as taking several cruises. Thanks to the caring staff of SouthEast Personal Care Home, his home for the past year. Donations, if desired, to the Alzheimer Society would be gratefully accepted. A celebration of life will be held 11:00 am, July 14th at the Senior Scene in Victoria Beach.

Sign up begins July 3 for the VB Ladies Golf Tournament Come play, mingle, and make new golf buddies on your favourite beach course. The 2018 Ladies VB Golf Tournament is Wednesday, July 25 this year, with sign-up starting July 3 at the golf course. Enter soon as the draws (8:30 AM and 11:30 AM) to this popular and relaxed nine-hole event fill up quickly. With limited space, registration is open only till noon July 23. All participants must be 18 and over, and payment is required at registration (non-members also pay $15 green fees). Create your own team or sign up as a single; it’s a great way to meet new friends. This year’s tournament fee is only $20 — an excellent deal as it includes a prize-filled wind-up party at the Victoria Beach Community Centre on Hwy 59, with delicious treats from the Merry Makers. And yes, there will be wine. The golf tournament committee is currently soliciting donations for prizes and silent auction items, which can be dropped off to any of the organizers below, or at the golf course up to July 20. Donors are, as always, gratefully acknowledged at the event and in the Herald online and in print. All proceeds from this fun beach event go to three local causes this year — our own V.B. Community Centre, Nova House Inc. and the East Beaches animal shelter. Don’t forget to tuck a little cash away to compete in the putting contest, and enter our silent auction — it’s shaping up to be another year of great stuff from our local sponsors.
