The annual Victoria Beach Book sale will take place on Sunday July 6th from 1-3pm at the clubhouse! This is a great chance to stock up on your summer beach reads!! Some selections of books that will be offered are children’s, young adult, mystery, romance, science fiction, magazines and more! All of the money we raise goes directly to fund the running of the Library and to purchase new books! Please also consider donating your gently used books and magazines as well. Donations of books or magazines from home or cottage are welcome, please drop them off at the Library during open hours, or box your books and leave
them on the boulevard by 8:00 am on Saturday July 5th to be picked up with the Flea Market donations. No Reader’s Digest, Dictionaries or Encyclopedias please! We are also looking for volunteers: for set up (3pm Saturday July 5th) for help at the sale, and for clean up, so please consider volunteering for the VB Club in this way. The sale starts at 1pm, and again this year VB club members will be let into the book sale first, so wear your wrist bands! Thanks in advance for your support! Howdy VB kids! What a great first week! We had tons of fun and lots more to come. Here’s the plan for Week 2: July 7-July 11 The movies this week will be: July 8: Monster’s University-G 104 min July 10: Frozen-PG 102 min The bike hike will be to the Lost Lagoon As always, remember your helmets, sunscreen and a bathing suit and towel. There are lots of cool critters to look at, so don’t forget your net. We meet at the clubhouse and leave at 10:00 sharp on Wednesdays. Parents are always welcome! The craft this week will be twirled paper collages. Reminder-Arts & Crafts only run on Tuesday and is for all ages. We will have our first of 4 Teen events on Wednesday July 9. The first VB teen event is a movie night-the movie will be Hunger Games: Catching Fire PG13, 146 minutes. Movie starts at 9:00 PM in the clubhouse, all teens welcome! President’s Message Today we had our Staff Orientation meeting at the Clubhouse and I was so impressed with our staff and conveners that I decided to share my thoughts with you. This was my first time leading this meeting and I was thrilled to see all the kids and conveners present to get things off to a positive start. All the kids were also very glad to have reached this day because it means their school is done and they can focus on more important issues like summer, fun, and work! The kids looked prepared and ready for work – for some this will be their first work experience. This year the interviews were conducted by Tamara Roehr and Anndrea O’Connor for swim, Bryan Yagi for Tennis, and Bruce Sirrell for Rec along with Suzy Hester and me from the Board. We were very impressed with how well every applicant handled their interview – they were professional and focused. For many kids this was their first job interview and we did our best to make sure they had a positive experience. At the staff orientation meeting, all the conveners were well prepared with tasks, roles, schedules, rules, and of-course new staff shirts and hoodies. As everyone broke out into their

Your property tax and water service notices should have been received in the mail recently. Payment is due by Thursday, July 31, 2014. teams, I could see them all starting to talk and give ideas for the days and weeks to come. The Swim staff were quickly finished with their meeting and started to set up for swim registration taking place the next day. They were making posters, setting up chairs and tables, discussing challenges and experience from previous year to make the registration process easier this year - I was already starting to be amazed by these energetic groups. With the interviews and hiring all done, now the hard work starts – programs will have started and we get to see these kids shine in their roles. I am looking forward to seeing them around at all the activities and events. They do an exceptional job every year so please take time to say hello to them, get to know them, and thanks them for their commitment and enthusiasm – They are our future and our future looks bright indeed!! Our Building Inspector, Curt Beaudoin, will be in his office next to the Recycling Depot on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Permits are required for building and demolition and application forms can be downloaded from our website or picked up at the RM office in Winnipeg. Our brush pick-up and chipping program is winding down, slowed somewhat by the wet weather. Do not place any more brush out on the boulevards for chipping please. Bagged leaves will continue to be picked up on your garbage day. Mail-in ballots for the upcoming municipal election are available through the RM office. The Advance Poll will be held on Tuesday, July 15 at the East Beaches Senior Scene here in VB and at the RM office in Winnipeg, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Election Day is Friday, July 25th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at three polling stations: 1) East Beaches Senior Scene, #3 Ateah Road 2) VB Clubhouse, #99 Sunset Boulevard/Pier Road 3) RM office in Winnipeg, 303-960 Portage Avenue Your voice matters so please take the time to cast your vote at one of these locations. Doubles has been the mainstay of tennis activity at VB. It is a very social sport and, at times, very competitive, too. With this in mind, one of our resident experts is ready to help you hone your skills. On Wednesday July 9, Geoff Kirbyson will be leading us in his famous doubles clinic. Geoff will be illustrating proper court positioning, serve strategies, movement, and tactics, all of which are doubles specific. He will also be showing his winning ways of aggressive doubles, conquering the net, and what to do when you get there. I am sure I overheard him say, “It’s okay to hit your opponent with the ball, or at least aim at their feet”. It will be a very informative and fun clinic. So with doubles in mind, I have a quiz that will challenge your doubles IQ. Share this test with your doubles partner as tournaments are but weeks away. Doubles Quiz downloaded from Tennisone.com 1. Why are 80% of serves placed down the center in doubles? Answer: Center serve is more difficult for returner to hit crosscourt away from net man than a wide serve, where returner can hit-down-the-line or return crosscourt on same angle as the serve. Where should you place the return when the serve comes down the center on deuce side or ad side? Answer: Crosscourt away from net man is the basic return on both sides. 2. Why do you hit more crosscourt shots in doubles than singles? Answer: The net man stands in the way of the down-the-line shot. 3. Why is the serve down the center different for returner on ad court vs deuce court? Answer: In the ad court, the right-handed returner has an easier time hitting inside-out forehand than a right-handed returner in

Answer: Standard poach is the net man moving to crosscourt to intercept crosscourt shot. In the reverse poach, the net man stands away from alley, inviting down-the-line shot, and then moves in “reverse” to intercept. 8. What is the advantage of serving from doubles alley vs serving from center line? Disadvantages? Answer: Advantage is it may be easier to direct the shot wide to returner, or, into the center, reaching returner’s backhand. Disadvantage is that it may be more difficult to execute standard down-the-center serving. 9. What is role of server’s partner when returner hits a good crosscourt return? Answer: Move into defensive mode, usually moving away from net, preparing to handle possibility of other net man’s volley. 10. Why is serve out wide on ad court more difficult for returner than serve out wide on deuce court? How is the server’s partner role different in these two situations? Answer: Wide serve to ad court goes to backhand of righthanded player, making it more difficult to hit effective crosscourt return than a wide serve to returner’s forehand on deuce side. 11. Where do you hit the first volley in serve and volley scenario? Answer: Crosscourt and deep, and then move closer to net. 12. When might you hit a drop shot return? Answer: When server is staying back and on weak 2nd serve. 13. Why is lob over net man’s head a better play when returning from deuce side than ad side (typically)? Answer: Lob over right-handed net man on deuce side places lob to this player’s backhand side, and most players can’t hit backhand overhead effectively. A lob to right-handed net man from ad side would allow net man to hit normal overhead. 14. In executing returns, what direction is your body facing? Why this is the best year for you to take up tennis If you’ve ever thought about playing tennis or seriously want to improve your game, this is the year to do it. We have it all here at VB. One of the biggest hurdles to playing tennis is that you need someone to play. You have to arrange games, rearrange your schedule, phone people, and then worry whether you’re good enough to play/ask this person. You might be asking yourself, “Why do I need all this aggravation and on my holidays yet?” At VB tennis we have the solution. This year you can play tennis six times a week without ever having to arrange a game or make a phone call. Just show up … Mondays and Fridays for adult round robins, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and now Saturdays, for GVS, or come
out on Fridays for something new, adult tennis drills. How easy is that? No need to plan, just show up. This is how you will meet new players with the same passion, or hesitancy, for tennis as you. This is where friendships will be formed and alliances made. A new acquaintance, a new hitting partner, a new doubles group. No pressure, no expectations, no commitment, only fun. For those who have been bitten by the tennis bug, one of the endless goals is to get better, much better. To hit the ball harder, to have more control, to be more consistent, to be better than your spouse so they will stop giving advice, or to beat that know-it-all in the next tournament. Again, we have the solution.
We are so fortunate to have a variety of excellent instructors to take your game to the next level. The always upbeat Robert Kennedy will be offering lessons on Mondays. Robert has lessons for children and adults of all levels and abilities, with small class sizes for personalized instruction. Once again we will be offering “Hit with a Pro” on Wednesdays. Each week will feature a different instructor. Geoff Kirbyson and Bill Serbin will both be offering doubles clinics. And returning from their European tour, are George and Kevin Kylar. The Kylars were planning to offer two consecutive Wednesdays of lessons to provide some consistency of instruction but I was just informed that their

flight will not be back in time for their July 30 date. However they will be here on August 6. New this year, beginning on July 11, is “Adult Tennis Drills”, on Fridays at 1:00. This free one hour adult hitting clinic will enable you to practice and hone your basic tennis strokes. Forehands, backhands, volleys, and smashes will be fed by the court attendants. With only eight people per court play should move quickly. To make perfect practice, perfect, I have invited two local pros each week to help guide players in their stroke mechanics. I have asked Geoff Kirbyson, Stephen Dubienski, Mike Lowdeyks, Alex Lesiuk, Bill Serbin and Robert Kennedy to each take two Fridays. CONTINUED on PAGE 8

As an added bonus of sorts, if you bring your video capable smart phone or tablet, we will have a court attendant film your strokes during the drills. This will enable you to see what minor adjustments might be needed for you to hit just like Roger or Maria. And you can view it all in the privacy of your own cottage. If you don’t believe it when the instructor says you are continually making two overhead loops with your racquet before you hit your forehand you can actually see it for yourself. Imagine that! But this comes with a warning; after I saw my strokes on film for the first time, I was depressed for a week. And to make matters worse, why is my tongue always hanging out the side of my mouth? I can see tennis drills being very popular for all levels of ability. When it comes to technique we all need pointers or a different point of view, because part of the fun of tennis is trying to get better. Since this will be a free clinic, we will restrict instruction to a limit of 16 participants on two courts. I think this could really be fun for everyone. So, for these reasons, if you‘re thinking of taking up tennis or want to seriously improve your game, this is the year to do it. Because at VB, we have it all. But there is still one more reason for you to start playing tennis at VB. By starting now you will have one year more. Yacht Club News I hope everyone enjoyed some Canada Day festivities and had some time to reflect on why we are fortunate to call this place home. We are surely fortunate to have the Lake and all the joy that it brings for VBers, such as the many events and activities the VBYC has planned. Here’s what you need to know: There are still spots available in our CanSail sailing schools, they will run weekly beginning July 14th for four consecutive weeks. Our experienced instructors are Sail Manitoba certified and love to make sailing fun. Spots are limited and are on a first come first served basis so book your or your child’s spot now. Once again, a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Community Club and to pass on your treasures that are in good condition and need a new home. Last year, our Victoria Beach Community raised a record breaking $3,320 for our clubhouse and all its diverse programs. As your flea market conveners once again this year, we hope that everyone, both new and experienced will again support this important VB Community Club event. “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick ups, set up, etc. between 8 am and 10:30 am … the earlier, the better. LWF’s summer Lake-a-thon season is heating up!
Golfing, walking and stand-up paddle-boarding are just some of ways Manitobans will be showing their lake love this summer. All three activities are part of Lake-a-thon, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign. Lake-a-thon events take place in communities across the province all year round but things really ‘heat up’ during the summer months, when LWF’s signature Lake-a-thon events bring people together to have some fun and help support our work. This summer’s first official Lake-a-thon event is Golf Fore Water 2014. Now in its fourth year, this annual golf tournament is being held on Tuesday, July 15, at Larters at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club in St. Andrews. It’s a full, fun-filled day that includes 18 holes of Texas Scramble golf, lunch, a putting contest, and a dinner with prizes and a silent auction. You don’t have to be an expert golfer to participate; newbies and weekend duffers are welcome, too! Golf Fore Water has a Victoria Beach connection; John Heppenstall, the LWF volunteer who created the event and continues to organize it, has been a VB cottager for years and spends much of his time on or around the water. In fact, John’s love for Lake Winnipeg and VB was one of the reasons he decided to get involved with LWF. Like many who have had the opportunity to experience cottage life, he’s witnessed the lake’s declining health. John channelled his concern into action; his commitment and determination to help restore and protect Lake Winnipeg by supporting LWF is truly inspiring. Lake-a-thon 2014 continues into August with another signature summer event, Walk for Water. Pledged community walks take place in four lakeside communities; collectively, they represent the largest grassroots fundraising event in support of a healthy Lake Winnipeg.
Victoria Beach’s 2014 Walk for Water will be the community’s seventh. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 10. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse, and participants can choose to walk either the 5 km route or the 2.5 km family route. Walk for Water is a great way to get some exercise, hang out with your neighbours – and be part of the solution. Plus, it’s fun for the whole family – including the dog! As a special treat this year, plans are underway for a kids’ event to be held in the lead-up to the VB walk at which children will have the chance to work together on a craft project. Details are still being worked out, but the hope is that this collaboratively created work of art will be unveiled at Walk for Water! Each year, Manitobans from all walks of life support the Lake Winnipeg Foundation by organizing their own fundraising activities. This summer’s first independent Lake-a-thon event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, when Hardcore Surf & Paddleboard Company will host a series of stand-up paddleboard sprint races at Grand Beach, with proceeds raised going to LWF. All paddling abilities are welcome, and participants will have the chance to win their very own paddleboard and carbon fiber paddle! Whether you take part or just watch from the beach, this is sure to be an exciting event. If you’re looking for a day trip destination this summer, consider heading over to Grand Beach. Hi everyone! I’m Cleo and I’m excited to be spending another super summer in the sun. I love to swim and as some of you may know I also love doing crafts! As always, I can’t wait for tie dye! DANIELE Hi everyone, this is my second year as swim instructor at VB! I just graduated from SJR and I’m going into engineering at the U of M. I like playing ultimate frisbee and soccer and my favourite stroke is back crawl. Can’t wait to see you all again this summer!
SPIRO Hi, I’m Spiro. I am going into grade 12 at Linden Christian School this fall. I play defense on my high school hockey team. I spend my summers at the lake. My favourite swimming stroke is the elementary backstroke. Looking forward to a great summer at the swim dock!

Children’s Fishing Derby - Saturday, July 12, 2014
The annual Children’s Fishing Derby will be held Saturday July 12th from 10 am until noon at the VB Pier. Last year we had perfect weather to go along the most action in recent memory. Over 60 fish were caught by an excited crew of young anglers. Let’s see if this year we can top 70! All anglers 12 and under are invited
to join us on the pier for some fishing fun. Don’t forget your VB Club wrist bands for admission. Just a quick reminder that all Manitoba fishing regulations apply, one rod per angler and all barbs must be pinched. This will also be our last year running the derby so if anyone is interested in

Above average rainfall raises Lake Winnipeg water level Editor’s Note: The following is text from a June 23rd Manitoba Hydro news release kindly sent to the Herald by Karin Boyd. Manitoba Hydro is advising the public that water levels on Lake Winnipeg are expected to rise seven inches in the next month as a result of above average rainfall. People around the lake and downstream on the Nelson River should be aware that levels are expected to remain high for the remainder of the summer. The Lake Winnipeg drainage basin has experienced extraordinarily high levels of rainfall this spring and flows on all tributaries, including the Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and Red rivers are above normal. The Winnipeg River watershed, for example, has received 50 per cent more rain than average resulting in record flows into Lake Winnipeg. Manitoba Hydro is continuing to maximize water flows out of the lake. Additional outlet channels constructed as part of the Lake Winnipeg Regulation project allow up to 50 per cent more water to flow out of the lake and into the Nelson River. Manitoba Hydro will continue to maintain maximum outflows until high levels subside as flood protection for Lake Winnipeg. Despite this action, the level of Lake Winnipeg is currently 715.2 feet above sea level and is expected to peak at 715.8 feet by the end of July. River flows into the lake are at approximately 224,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 50 per cent higher than

The Lake Winnipeg Regulation project was constructed in 1976 to reduce overland flooding around Lake Winnipeg and to regulate outflows for hydropower production. It included the excavation of three channels to increase the amount of water that could flow out of Lake Winnipeg and construction of a control structure at Jenpeg on the Nelson River.

100 Summers of Victoria Beach By Geoff Kirbyson
It’s not a Delorean and there’s no flux capacitor but Shelia Grover and Greg Thomas have created a time machine. And just like the 1985 Hollywood blockbuster Back to the Future, the long-time Fifth Avenue residents are able to transport readers to days of long ago with their just-released book, “100 Summers on Lake Winnipeg – A Resort History of Victoria Beach.” It is, in many ways, the sequel to “Looking Back 50 Years With the Victoria Beach Herald,” which was published in the mid1970s, but this coffee table book is much slicker and easier on the eyes. It’s difficult to imagine how much research went into crafting such a comprehensive history of the most famous gated community in Manitoba. While it will unquestionably appeal to anybody who has owned or rented a cottage here, it would also serve others well, for it explains some of the place’s well-known quirks, such as the bicycle culture. The photographs, some of which are a century old, are fascinating. And because much of the scenery in them is so familiar, readers will undoubtedly scan the pictures in search of an old friend or neighbour or be amazed at how some undeveloped parts of V.B. became hubs of activity many years later. Sometimes it’s enough to put a face to one of the names that have long been synonymous with Victoria Beach, such as Ateah or Conklin. But as much as there is to recognize, 100 Summers also documents many long-forgotten elements of Victoria Beach and confirms stories that have been passed down from generation to generation during long walks along the avenues. For example, there’s the 1953 fire that destroyed the Victoria Beach Inn near the pier, the discontinuation of rail service to Victoria Beach and Grand Beach in 1962 or the 1917 construction of the Victoria Beach School (on the site of what is now Redwing Park). And did you know V.B. used to have an Royal Canadian Air Force airfield or that the annual masquerade has been going on since before the Great Depression? If you aren’t inclined to sink into your hammock to read about Victoria Beach’s origins and progress through the decades,
there’s enough here for a quick read in the sidebars alone, which cover things such as the Victoria Beach Cemetery, the shopping services available from Eaton’s (ask your parents), the origins of the biffy, berry picking, summer jobs, Einfeld’s Bakery and the Moonlight Inn.

Cleanup on Aisle … We can leave when Jamie gets his bike turned around. Group leaves at 08:00 every morning. New riders welcome. We ride through Albert Beach, Hillside and down Lakeshore Road to Lester Beach about 40 kms with some longer rides added. We maintain a moderate pace, rolling average 25 km/h and up as season progresses. Some of our more fit riders tack on a couple of hills for an added challenge.
