IT IS TAX TIME. Just a reminder, taxes are due July 31,. After that date a late payment fee will be applied. This year, your water bill was mailed separately. It is due on July 30, not the 31st. After July 30th a late payment charge applies. For those who like to budget their expenses over a wider period, we would also like to inform you that your taxes can be paid in 12 monthly instalments. RECYCLING – This past week we recieved a letter from the recycling depot in Lac du Bonnet. They complained that for several years now they have been recieving used kleenex, paper towels and even toilet paper. Remember that our recycling is done by hand. These items belong in the garbage, not the recycling. ZEBRA MUSSELS –At the July 21 Council meeting Laureen Janusz of Manitoba Conservation & Water Stewardship came to update the community on zebra mussels in Lake Winnipeg. Last autumn when our swimming

docks were pulled out for the winter, zebra mussels were found attached to it. Those mussels froze over the winter and the dock could safely be put back into the water. But zebra mussels are here. Boaters need to take care. She explained that infant mussels have threadlike appendages that attach to solid surfaces such as docks, boats, and rocks in the water, but they also can attach to anything in the water. No boat should be moved from Lake Winnipeg into another lake without being thoroughly washed in hot water with a high pressure hose. As yet, we do not have facilities in the municipality to provide this service. It is up to every boater to be responsible and clean their vessel. Our water intake system is most endangered. We will have to closely monitor it over the next few years to keep the mussels from clogging the system. FINANCING FOR THE PUBLIC WORKS BUILDING – On Thursday July 23, we received word from the Municipal Board that they are not granting us approval for financing our Public Works building at this time.

Thanks to Dr. Joan Swain and Welcome to Dr. Garth Campbell Council would like to thank Doctor Joan Swain for her services this past week. We hope she enjoyed the experience and plans to come back again next year. At the same time we would like to welcome Doctor Garth Campbell. He will be with us from August 2 to the 22nd. We hope that he enjoys the Victoria Beach experience. For the benefit of newcomers to the beach, the Doctor’s cottage is at 124 Birch. The phone number at the doctor’s office is 204-756-6305.

There are 2 clinics Tuesday through to Saturday. Clinic hours are 9:30 to 11:30 and 5:30 to 7:30. On Sunday and Monday there is one clinic only from 5:30 through to 7:30. Thank you to Kathy Brydon and the Medical Committee for their effort to keep the Clinic supplied. Thanks also to the staff at the gate for helping to direct people who live outside the Vehicle Restricted area. RMVB COUNCIL

Letter to the Editor I walked up to meet my husband at the parking lot on Fri., July 24. As he drove up, a gentleman on a motorcycle pulled up beside him to tell him something was hanging down under the car. He’d obviously followed Vic to ensure he was made aware of it. He left as another gentleman came over from the direction of the parking lot entrance. It had been raining, and the ground was wet and sandy, but this gentleman (in his whitechecked shorts and blue t-shirt) got down on his back under the front of the car and replaced the tubing that had become disengaged. We did not even have time, ourselves, to figure out what to do. This gentleman’s name was “Derek.” And by the way, a lady came from her car behind us to see if there was anything she could do. You read about “Acts of Kindness” in the Winnipeg newspapers all the time. I’d like to acknowledge these three individuals and publicly thank them. This Community is known for lending a hand when one is needed. I’d especially like to thank you once again, “Derek.” Ruby Garden

To help clarify the history of tennis court attendants the following may be of assistance. When the tennis courts came into existence in the early 40s the first attendant was Reg Moir who happened to be in charge of the lumber yard located between Falls store and the butcher shop. Whatever happened to Reg, I am not sure but the tennis courts went into serious disrepair. In 1949 the VB Club hired its first two Sports Directors, Al Irving and Joe Donovan. They were responsible for repairing the tennis courts, looking after the evening dances, giving tennis lessons and golf lessons. Al and Joe had to dig up the courts and with the generosity of the VB Club spread several bags of shale, rolling and watering and managing the courts on a daily basis. The following year Al and Joe had to earn more money in order to return to University. From that year (1950) I have no idea who looked after the courts till now and from all reports Brian and Lisa Yagi are doing an outstanding job. Joe Donovan

VB Masters Tournament Recap

This year’s Masters Tournament went off as usual without a hitch … except for all the hitches. On Saturday the play was interrupted by a deluge for about 3 hours which is a big loss. We almost caught up on Sunday but we were thwarted again by Mother Nature with the rain starting again around 6 pm. We reconvened on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th.

Are You Practicing the Wrong Shot? 80% of recreational tennis games are over within three shots. Games consist of a serve, a return of serve and a ground stroke or volley. All games, unless you have an ace or a double fault, have a serve and a return of serve, and yet these are the shots that are rarely practiced. Every game has them so why don’t we practice them more often, as we do our forehands and backhands? So next time you are out practicing, include the shots that you will be hitting most often in a game, your serve and return of serve. c/o Tennis and Life Camp

Tennis Round Robin Results On July 20 our round robin winners were Dylan and his partner James Popel with a total of 17 points! And on July 24 our winners were Jon Falkenberg and his partner Bob Scurfield with a total of 16 points!

As of this writing only 3 matches need to be played. As challenging as this tournament was to run with the rain delays, it was an absolute pleasure to work with the people who make up this VB tennis community. Everyone stepped up to lend a hand, be available for their matches, wait around a long time for their matches to play and everyone did it with smiles on their faces. Within minutes of the rain stopping on numerous occasions there was a large smiling crowd of “squeegee-ers” drying the courts. The spirit of VB people is a fantastic thing to witness so thanks for letting me be a part of it. Many thanks are due my fantastic volunteers, Ellie Black, Margaret Meulendyk, Sophie Mcgooey, Cathy Finnbogason, John Heppenstal and the Court Attendants Cole, Ben, and Cara. You guys really had your work cut out for you! Also thanks to Stuart Juzda and Stino Siragusa for helping with the draw and Lorraine Cook for well...everything. And a big shout out to me! for making it to the semifinals of the mixed doubles. Contrary to the rumours out there, this result was due to my exceptional athleticism and tennis skills and not due to my partner Carol Forsythe carrying me. (By the way, if you want to visit Carol, she’s in traction in Pine Falls Hospital, visiting hours are 10 to 2!) That’s it for this year. Again, credit must be given to the VB tennis community for making this tournament a success. Thank you. See you next year. Cheers Steve Cook

Registration: 9:00 a.m. at the clubhouse Race Time: 9:30 a.m. sharp Short course: approx. 3km Long course: approx. 5 km Family relay: (4 members/extended family) Last year’s trophy winners please return them to the Johnson’s at 309 3rd or bring them to the Clubhouse on the 8th.

Heads up for Target Lesions & Lyme disease at VB

Last week my husband and I were surprised to find a target lesion on our 8 year old son Bennett’s arm. It’s not the height of tic season and, while our children endured daily tic searches in the spring, Lyme Disease is far down on the list of hazards I’m vigilant for during the dog days of summer. We were lucky this lesion was in a visible spot when Bennett was wearing short sleeves Sunday morning. We were also lucky to have an emergency room doctor from Winnipeg visiting us and who immediately called the pharmacy in Selkirk (open Sundays) to start him on antibiotics (not to mention amazing friends who stopped to pick it up for us on their return trip to VB that day). Antibiotics might not stop the development of Lyme disease in Bennett, but we know we got him started on the same day the lesion developed and thanks to quick treatment there’s a more than excellent chance he’ll be okay. There’s also a possibility he developed the lesion from something else, like the bite of spider or perhaps even something else altogether. Since Lyme disease has now risen to rates considered epidemic in Manitoba, any target lesion is now treated as if it could be Lyme disease. A target lesion that goes undetected and untreated, however, has a greater chance of developing into something serious if it has originated from a tic carrying the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. In light of the rising rates of this disease in Manitoba, rising rates of target lesions discovered on people at or visiting VB, and its potentially debilitating effects, I write here to encourage

Best Spot on the Lot In 1996 Dr. Peter Duke, Carol Corona and Joyce Howe first started this raffle to help raise funds for the Doctor’s Office. The money was deposited in the already established “Victoria Beach Medical Trust Fund.” In 2004, after the FIRE that burned west of Ateah Rd., it was suggested that some of the raffle proceeds could be used for equipment for the First Responders/Fire Fighters. From then on the wording in the Herald and therefore perception of the “Medical Trust Fund” was that it supported all the medical/emergency needs of the community. The wording “Trust Fund” has made availability of funds difficult. So, at the July 21st Council Meeting the first reading of the bylaw to change the name to “Vitoria Beach Medical Reserve Account” was passed. As the present conveyor of the Best Spot in the Lot Raffle, I have made plans to meet with representatives of the V.B. Medical Committee, who assist with the running of the doctor’s office and the V.B. First Responders to ask what supplies and equipment they may need to best service our community. Tickets for this year’s raffle are on sale now. They are $2.00 each. The draw will be held Sunday, Sept. 6th at noon at the parking lot. 1st Prize: that prime parking spot reserved just for you 2nd Prize: 4 free taxi rides 3rd Prize: $50.00 gift certificate to Carol’s on Leon Tickets are available at the Parking Lot and I will be selling them on the Village Green on Sat. August 1st from 10:00 to 4:00. Betty Lodewyks

families to be aware target lesions can develop at this time of year and importantly to seek treatment if they find one. We’ve talked to our children about it, both now know what a target lesion looks like from seeing Bennett’s (a bulls eye rash), and if they ever see one while dressing they know how important it is to let either myself or my husband know. My deepest thanks to Dr. Jennifer Lewis, to the Doctor’s Committee who staffed our VB clinic where we assuredly would have gone had we not been visited by Dr. Lewis that day, to Kathy & John Bryden for picking up the prescription in Selkirk, and to all our friends at VB for their support and love. Eight at the Gate Bike Skills Workshop July 18, 2015 The event was run between showers on Saturday. We participated in bike handling games and skill building exercises including: foot down, grass track relays, stability run (straight line), retrieve objects (handy if you drop your cell phone), bunny hop and spray the dog that is chasing you. While the season will be half over by the time you see this there is lots of road to cover. We will of course continue our August Long weekend “Gran Fondo Gran Colazione” (Big Ride Big Breakfast) on the Sunday. Standard VB ride rules in effect: start at 08:00, hang on to the fast group as long as you can, then join Bob struggling back to VB for pancakes and mimosas. Some keeners will add a few hills and sprints along the way, no one keeps score but lots of bragging will occur after the ride. Reminder riders must continue directly to the breakfast; no sneaking home for a shower. We have riders participating in Gran Fondo events as well as MS rides. One of our riders just completed the Habitat Cycle of Hope, arriving in Winnipeg on July 18th after 1,600 kms and $220,000 raised. Our group has once again purchased bikes for the VB Club silent auction with the help of Walter Jozwiak of Lifesport on Pembina. Over the years these have been a popular draw so be sure to buy lots of tickets. We continue to welcome new riders. For further information contact Bob Marshall 204 756-8255, cell 204 261-4292 ( text also) email jmarsha@mymts.net or check us out on Face Book “Eight at the Gate”.

The Tennis Tradition at Victoria Beach

The August Long Weekend has become a major event in the summer life of Victoria Beach as cottagers and families gather from throughout Canada, the United States and abroad in a large informal reunion. For many years one of the central events of this hectic and exciting weekend has been the annual Victoria Beach Open, one of the largest tennis tournaments in Manitoba. By 8 A.M. on Saturday morning, players are busy warming up on the six modern tennis courts nestled on the edge of the Village Green and the three days of intense competition is on! The journey to this contemporary recreational and social event mirrors the history of the resort community of Victoria Beach. When the Victoria Beach Company began to develop the cottage area after the railway arrived in 1916, the Company’s vision for the resort always included the development of recreational opportunities for their growing and captive audience. Not only were the early cottagers looking for things to do on warm summer days, there were the guests at the Pinehurst Inn on Pier Point who didn’t have to worry about the daily chores involved in sustaining the cottage. Tennis has a strong tradition in Manitoba. As early as 1881 the Winnipeg Lawn and Tennis Club was established in what is now downtown Winnipeg. By 1920 this organization was ensconced at its Roslyn Road location and there were a number of other tennis clubs located throughout Winnipeg. So, when Frank Sprague, the highly energetic manager of the Victoria Beach Company, launched the arduous work of developing the golf course in the early 1920s adjacent to 8th Avenue, the laying out of a tennis court in that location seemed a logical complementary use. Build it and they will come. The first reference to the tennis court at the golf course location emerged in the “Victoria Beach News,” precursor to the Herald, in June 1926 when editor John Conklin noted that the tennis court “has been refitted with new tapes and the clay leveled to perfection. This year the Victoria Beach Company has taken over the work of keeping the courts in shape and invites lovers of the racquet to patronize them. So far there has been little use made of the courts.” Apparently this more remote location at the golf course was not attracting many players. By the following year, the tennis facility at Victoria Beach was on the move. By 1927 the use of what is now known as the Sports Field had been abandoned by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Once again Frank Sprague saw an opportunity and a new tennis court was laid out on the platform of one of the former Air Station buildings and made accessible to the members of the recently formed Victoria Beach Club. This new and rather unique location was considered more convenient and spacious than the golf course locale and use picked up. In those early years there weren’t any organized tournaments. In fact the first reference to a tennis tournament at Victoria Beach came in 1930 when the neighborhood “Cavemen’s Tennis Club “announced that they were holding their annual tournament at the Rice Courts at the spacious corner of 4th avenue and Alexander. That same year plans were taking shape to develop a “municipally owned” tennis court on Victoria Beach Company land “north of the end of the rails”. This ambitious plan included not only a tennis court, but a badminton court and a bowling green as well. Clearly, the tennis platform’s annual cost of $75 to

maintain was generating popular support for a more long-term racquet facility. The big excitement in the summer of 1932 was the opening of three new shale tennis courts at their present location just beyond the rail line terminus. Built and funded by the Victoria Beach Company, this was an ambitious project, particularly during the Depression. A work crew first had to remove massive stones and raise the area three feet with loads of gravel and cinders provided by the railway. The next step was laying down the shale which had to be meticulously leveled and rolled after being generously soaked by the courts’ new water system, supplied by a high pressure tank adjacent to the courts. On July 30 1932, Manitoba Premier John Bracken officially opened the new tennis courts in the presence of a large gathering of visitors and residents. After a few well-chosen remarks, the Premier stepped onto the court and played the first game in a series of exhibition matches involving the four top ranked players in the province. That event marked the beginning of the annual tennis tournament at Victoria Beach. In those days, however, “entries may be made on the arrival of Saturday’s train, at 3:10 PM”. This also marked the launch of a more formal role for the Victoria Beach Community Club as they took on responsibility for supervising the use and maintenance of the courts. Murray Borrowman, appointed to be the first tennis court attendant, was kept busy supervising the players whose fees ranged from $5 for the season to the casual player who handed over 35 cents for daily use. Young Borrowman also had to regularly water the shale courts and ensure the gate was locked every evening. In 1936 a shelter was added to the tennis courts to make the wait more comfortable. While tennis would wane in popularity during the World War Two era and in the postwar recovery years, it would ultimately enjoy a resurgence in the 1960s and major facility upgrades in the 1980s which we are still enjoying today. The game of tennis is woven into the fabric of the Victoria Beach experience and today, there is no better way to enjoy it than to wander down to watch the talented players engaged in the Victoria Beach Tennis Open.

VB Novelty Tennis Tournament 2015 August 15th and 16th

Well, it’s that time of year again! As we begin to wind down the tennis season at our beloved V.B. courts, I would like to remind everyone that this year’s Novelty Tennis Tournament will be held on August 15th and 16th. The emphasis of this tournament has always been FUN! Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Please be advised that all entrants to the tournament must be Victoria Beach Club members and have their own shoe tag number. I look forward to an incredible weekend of great tennis, laughs and camaraderie! The Novelty’s format is an entertaining finale to another spectacular summer at V.B. Check out next week’s Herald for more information and mark your calendars for August 15th and 16th. See you at the courts, Stino Siragusa (204) 996-0121

Children’s Masquerade 2015

A record 128 kids came out to the Children’s Masquerade last weekend. It was hot and humid but all of the kids were patient and well-behaved. Especially impressive were the kids who stayed in costume, even if their costume involved plastic – Jelly Bean bags, Fisherman, Patio Lanterns, just to name a few. Once again, it was hard for our judges to identify the best in our three categories. But after extensive consultations, we decided that The Dalai Lama (Parker Ateah) was the Best Original Costume. The best VB-themed Costume the Annoying Crow (Aislin Pritchard). Note that Aislin has owned this category the last two years. The Best Group Costume was the VB Paper Dolls. The final Moonlight gift certificate was won by Patrick Yarnell as the Boat for his pirate kids. A special salute to our youngest participants. If you were there early you saw 5-month old twins John and Garrett Dawson who

were dressed as Thing 1 and Thing 2, (accompanied by their sister Brynn, the Cat in the Hat). The feeding of young twins has its own schedule though, so they had to sneak out before the parade. Welcome to VB boys! Thanks to our favourite musical couple – Kim and Aaron Burnett – for entertaining us. Thanks also to our many volunteers who make this event run so smoothly: Tess Poulton, Fran Pollard, Beth Pollard, Amy Edwards and our Rec Assistants Brendan and John. Finally, a big thank you to our daughter Aleta who added kids face painting to the event this year. The designs you painted were amazing! It was a pleasure once again to host the event. Hope you had fun and we’ll see you again next year! Kristie and Doug Pollard

2015 Victoria Beach Junior Tennis Tournament Results

The annual tournament was a huge success with 128 matches played in two days! We had over 80 Juniors come out and 35 Parents join us for the parent/child matches. It was hot and muggy but we’re not complaining because the rain held off just until we were finishing up the finals! We would like to thank the Yagi’s for their guidance and the tennis attendants for their help. Thank you to the parents and friends for cheering everyone on, and to all the players who worked hard! See you on the courts! Anndrea 0’Connor, Brad Nechwediuk, Phillipe Champagne, Lisa & Derek Zeilstra Please note: the winners from the under 18 categories are eligible to play in the VB Open Tournament on August long weekend.

The 800 meter swim race was a great success last weekend! Congrats to all the swimmers who took part! This year there were 11 swimmers in the Men’s Division, 10 in the Women’s Division and 6 teams of 4 swimmers each in the Relay. The Relay was new this year and lots of people told us that we should definitely include it again next year – but that we should make it a family relay! Who’s up for the challenge!! Congrats too to the Swim Staff- Lanette, Cameron, Tess and Laura – for running a fantastic afternoon. And thanks to people who step up spur of the moment to volunteer with timing – Lori Edwards, Gord Poulton and Alice Russel and to Darcy Poulton and Kevin Dubé for taking pictures. It’s so great to see the Victoria Beach community spirit alive on race days! The Pier is full of people cheering on the swimmers – not just their own friends and family members but every swimmer. The 200 meter and 800 meter swims are races but even more they are another great way for the community to come together, for beach people to enjoy the sport of swimming and to get some great exercise and for everyone to HAVE FUN! Please take the time when you see a Swim Staff in their turquoise t-shirts to say a thank you and to give an encouraging word. They are doing a great job at the swim beach and the dock with our kids! Our Lake Needs You!! Join the effort to make our beautiful Lake Winnipeg healthier by taking part in VB’s Walk for Water on August 9th. This annual event/campaign in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and the important work it does will start out at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse. Registration will begin at 9:15 and the Walk will get underway at 10. There are 2 routes from which to choose: 2.5 km and 5 km, depending upon your fitness and energy levels. (How’s that for inclusiveness?!) So, for the sake of the lake, do come down to the VB clubhouse on August 9th and bring along some friends and/or relatives and/or kids and/or your dog! But know that whether you walk alone or with others, and whether you bring in $10 or over $100, your participation will be tremendously appreciated. However, if you’re not able to walk for whatever reason, you can still support this event by signing someone’s pledge form or by making a donation to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation. Pledge forms are available at all key VB locations and at Saffie’s, AND one has even been inserted into every copy of this issue of the Herald! Also, pledge forms, information about the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, and opportunities to donate will be available at the LWF table situated alongside the VB Club Raffle on the Village Green (across from the bakery) on Saturday, August 1 from 10 till 4. Interesting Facts from the Senior Open The following information is based on the Senior Open trophy plaques. Ladies Singles Susan Spence has won this event more times than anyone, seven in all. Kim Willoughby is a close second with six wins. Kelly Irving first won this event in 1977 and then went on to win it four more times, the last being in 2010. That’s 33 years between her first and last win. Now that’s staying power! Men’s Singles Grover Trophy Don Bushuk claims the most wins (8) in this event. Stephen Dubienski and Geoff Kirbyson are tied for second place with six wins each. Like Blondie and Dagwood and Bogart and Hepburn, there have been many successful pairings in VB tennis history. Some players chose a different partner each year while others like a familiar face. Either way, it always proves for interesting matches. Ladies Doubles The longest lasting and most successful partnership in recorded VB tennis history is that of Sally Lawler and Susan Spence who have hoisted the trophy together nine times. Linda Suderman and Susan Quinton have also proven to be a dynamic duo by winning this event eight times. Men’s Doubles Leaholm Trophy Stuart Juzda and Clint Harvey share the honour of winning this event in the year of its inception, 1965. The winningest team in this event is that of Don Bushuk and Scott Irving, who can claim six wins, the first being in 1980. With four wins each, the teams of Mike Lodewyks and Stephen Dubienski, Jamie Dawson and Geoff Kirbyson, and Patrick Millican and Geoff Kirbyson, can all claim their share of the glory. Mixed Doubles C.J. Wingate Memorial Trophy The winningest pair in this event is the sister-brother team of Jill and Geoff Kirbyson. Their proud parents were able to snap pictures of these champions five times. In addition to his success with his sister, Geoff has been the common denominator in a total of eight winning partnerships. His first win was in 1985 with Leah Mitchell and his most recent win was in 2010 with his eighth partner, Kelly Thompson. Margaret Meulendyk has won this event twice. The first time was in 1987 with W.M. Vincent and then 24 years later she won it a second time in 2011 with Tom Brown. Keep on playing, Margaret!

V.B. Club Membership: Fun is in Full Swing! The summer at V.B. is in full-swing, and Club Members of all ages are enjoying the many different elements of the summer program. Check your blue calendars for regularly occurring and upcoming events. If you have just arrived at the beach and have yet to purchase your membership, you can buy them at three places: the Tennis Courts and Library during their regular hours, and between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm at the Information Booth at the V.B. Gate. If you are visiting or renting at the beach for the first time, you might be wondering what the V.B. Club is all about and what your family would get for the $50 membership fee. Well, settlein for a few minutes, because the list is long. The V.B. Club Membership provides you with a complete family entertainment package for the entire seven-week season! First, you will receive a blue V.B. Calendar featuring all of the AMAZING events offered, and with it matching blue wristbands for each of your family to wear to EVERY beach event or activity. The next step is to register for children’s swimming lessons and/ or to purchase a season-long tennis shoe-tag for $15 – both of which require proof of V.B. Club Membership (you will be given a copy of your Membership Application). Then, start planning the rest of your week(s) with your calendar in hand! Every morning there are active programs for both children and adults. For the youngsters, there are organized Games on Mondays and Fridays, Golf Lessons on Tuesdays and

Thursdays, and a Bike Hike on Wednesdays (check the Herald for the destination) – all led and supervised by our enthusiastic Recreation Assistants or Tennis Staff. For adults, there are aerobics classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and yoga practices on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Adults can then test their brain fitness on Mondays and Wednesdays with some bridge, and kids can have more fun with Arts & Crafts on Tuesday afternoons and movies on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in our wonderful old Club House – and the whole family can have some fun together with Family Recreation on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. In between, you might want to fit-in a tennis lesson – offered by age-group each day by our excellent tennis staff (children need just a wrist-band, not a shoe-tag, for these lessons), or a trip to the library to select a book or visit with our friendly and knowledgeable librarians (and be sure to check out our huge selection of new books for every age this year). And those are just the regular activities offered each and every week! You will also want to get to some of the Club’s not-to-be missed Special Events – like the Children’s Masquerade, the Dog Show, Sandcastle Building or a Sports Tournament (Sports’ Day, the Fishing Derby, a Bike or Swim Race). That list is so long, it takes up half the page of the calendar! Is there any place else in the world you can keep your family so busy and active for $50 a week – let alone for seven weeks?! CONTINUED From PAGE 22 This year, the Club is offering a day-pass for your guests or for those who are here for just a short time. These are available where memberships are sold, and for $5 will allow a person to participate as a Club member with tennis privileges (the Club day-pass also replaces the tennis day-pass). Staff will mark the bright orange day-pass wristband with the date of use at the time of sale. Please remember that the revenue from membership sales is the primary funding source for all of this programming. Your financial participation is essential to keeping all of these traditions going! If you don’t think you will use a membership, but want to support the Club, please consider making a donation anywhere memberships are sold. You will receive a tax receipt (and a calendar) for any donation of $20.00 or more. Thanks again to all of those who help with membership sales – canvassing at the beginning of summer or throughout the season. We are looking for one or two people familiar with the beach to head-up the Membership Team next year. It is a great way to meet people and support this terrific community! Please call us if you are interested in doing that, or if you would like a canvassing route for the July long-weekend sales-blitz next year. Have a great long-weekend everyone! Loverboy Rocks Victoria Beach

Torrential rain and a tornado warning didn’t stop thousands of beach residents and local fans from packing the Victoria Beach Sports Field for the 9th Annual Summer Winds Family Music Festival on July 17th and 18th. Headliner Loverboy electrified the stage with their 80’s classics including “Working for the Weekend” and “Turn Me Loose”. In total the festival delivered 13 acts over the 2 days including the alt-rock sounds of Yes We Mystic, an ode to Johnny Cash with Cold Hard Cash, and traditional Japanese drummers Fubuki Daiko. Along with music there were children’s activities, beer gardens, and food trucks. Summer Winds continues to be the most important fundraiser

for the brand new Victoria Beach Sports Club. It is thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, and fans that this fundraising event is made possible every year. “It’s so inspiring after nine years to see our new Community Centre standing next to the festival grounds,” said Festival Co-Chair Glenn Halgren. “It’s a symbol of what can be accomplished when great people come together each year.” The event would not be possible without the support of Greenback Hunter and Fishing Guide Services, Edmond Financial, and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. Halgren encourages everyone to keep the Summer Winds spirit alive by supporting all the sponsors as listed on www.summerwindsfest. com throughout the year. “Summer Winds has created a wave at the beach. Each year it gets bigger and better” says Halgren. Bigger and better it was indeed. Next year marks the tenth anniversary for the festival and big things are going to be happening to mark this important year. Visit Summer Winds at www.summerwindsfest.com or follow them on Facebook for up-to-date news and information.
