Council Corner

Reeve and Council would like to take this opportunity to express our sorrow at the passing of Councillor Gordon Ross. In his two years on Council he worked tirelessly. He prided himself on never missing a meeting. He was a devoted to the community. He and his efforts will be missed. We would also like to remind you that taxes are due July 31st. While you still may pay your taxes by mail, the easiest way to pay is on-line, through your bank bill pay system. Most banks will do direct transfers to the RM. Please be careful and send your taxes to the RM of Victoria Beach. There are many similar names. Your water bill is also due. It was mailed separately in May with the mandatory boiled water notice. In case you have not heard, the Council meeting of August 2nd has been moved to the beach. It

will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Seniors’ Scene, 3 Ateah Road. With this change of venue, we will be providing 4 meetings at the beach once again this year. Did you know that the Victoria Beach office sends out important information via email? For example, the change of venue for the August 2nd meeting was sent out to all people who have signed up. It is rather useful to get this information in a timely manner, so we encourage you to go to the website for the Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach and register for this service. And finally, the Reeve and Council wish you a wonderful second half of the summer vacation period. Enjoy each day that you are able to spend in this wonderful location. REEVE and COUNCIL.

Thanks to Doctor Garth Campbell

The medical committee and council would like to thank Dr. Garth Campbell for his first week of service to the community of Victoria Beach. He will be with us until August 7. For anyone new to the area, the doctor’s cottage is at 124 Birch Avenue. The phone number there is 204-756-6305. This year, the Clinic hours are 9:30 to 11:30 and 5:30 to 7:30 Tuesday through to Sunday. On Monday there is one clinic only from 5:30 through to 7:30.

This service is available to everyone. If you live outside the vehicle restricted area, stop at the white information building and ask. The attendant will help you get to the doctor safely. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR MEDICAL CARD. The REEVE, COUNCIL AND THE MEDICAL COMMITTEE of the RM of VB

Victoria Beach HERALD

Congratulations to all the swimmers who completed the first session of Swimming Lessons at VB! And a big thank you to the Swim Instructors for making lessons fun. We’re hoping many of our swimmers are returning for session two. Second session starts Monday July 25 and there are still lots of spots available including some private and semi-private and the new Fit and Fun class. Come sign up at the Swim Dock any weekday morning between 9:00 and 10:30 with Lanette, our Head Swim Instructor. Swim kids learn all the stuff they do at city lessons plus lake safety and they make friends with other kids their age here at the beach. The 800 Meter Open Swim was quite an adventure! Congrats to all the swimmers who took part and braved the wind, waves and rain! This year there were 7 swimmers in the Individual Division, 7 teams of 4 swimmers each in the Relay. This was our second year of running the Relay and some of the teams came out with team colours. A number of teams came out decked out. The Olympic Spirit Award goes to Team Canada with runners-up Team Switzerland and Team Finland. Congrats too to the Swim StaffLanette, Cameron, Laura and Tess – for running a fantastic afternoon. And thanks to all the people who helped out with timing, set up, photos, etc.

Masters Tennis Results

Another VB Master tennis tournament has been wrapped up. This year we only lost a of couple hours to rain and thanks to the squeegee army we were up and running in record time. The tennis, despite all the wrapped knees and pills popped, was exceptional and played with great spirit. The highlight match for me was the mixed doubles semifinal, where despite Geoff Kirbyson’s comedic skills (who knew!) and his one arm push-ups (impressive!), he and Margaret Meulendyk were unable to get past the defending champs, Lisa Lucht and Francois Masse, in an amazing match that finished in a tie break. In another amazing turn of events, Elly Black managed to carry her inept partner, myself, into the third round where we ran into that ‘b..stard’ Bill Turk and his lovely wife, Jane (Elly’s words!) I’m going to thank some people now so pay attention. Without them this event would be much harder work. Firstly the amazing tennis kids. Smiling Katie, Deer-in-Headlights Josh, Laid-Back Stephen and Super-Competent (and smiley) Alex. Great job guys. Helping with the draw, I cannot thank enough Stuart Juzda, Stino Siragusa, Sophie Mcgoey and Elly Black. You guys made it fun. Volunteering during the event, John Heppenstal , Margaret Muelendyk, Peggy Ansons, Anne Manning, Rex Neuendorff, and Karl Ruban— you made my life so much easier. A huge thanks to those who brought me snacks and on Sunday just as my head was about to explode, I was handed a few um... “lemonades.” Interestingly, the grass got a lot greener after said

Victoria Beach HERALD

“lemonades” were scoffed! Thank you, you awesome criminals! And of course I can’t thank my lovely wife enough, Lorraine Cook who kept me upright and nourished and who did many other behind the scenes tasks. This was my last Masters Tournament as Convener, it’s been a blast. I’ve met so many amazing people and seen first-hand the Victoria Beach spirit at its best. I’ll of course be available to help out the next intrepid volunteers who step up. Congratulations to all the winners, runners up, and everybody who participated. It’s been my pleasure to serve you all. Cheers, Steve Cook

Yacht Club News

Victoria Beach Yacht Club sailors James Thompson, Molly Ingenmey, Tomas Green had a great showing at the Sail West Regatta and Laser Canadian Championships in Gimli 2 weeks ago – Molly was Top Under 18 Laser Radial Sailor and Tomas was Top Optimist Sailor. This is one of the premiere regattas in Canadian dinghy sailing and features competitors from across the country. Congratulations Molly and Tomas for winning in your respective classes – thanks for making VBYC and prairie sailors proud! Our club was also well represented by Chris Aldridge, Jona Green, and Ryan Van Berkel who volunteered their time and expertise to make the event a fantastic experience for the sailors. It should be noted that both Molly and Tomas grew up taking sailing lessons at the Yacht Club and are now among the top sailors in the province and country. Molly is also the Head Instructor at VBYC along with instructors James Thompson and Tallon Sparks. James, Molly, and Tallon are super knowledgeable about sailing and are super fun. Both adults and kids can have a blast in sailing lessons whether the goal is a future Olympic medal or just to learn a fun new skill and enjoy the water. We have one more week (August 1-5) of lessons available - CanSail for adults in the morning and Optimist in the morning and afternoon. Spots are limited so register today at www.vbyc.ca or drop by the Yacht Club. There’s been lots of action at the Yacht Club this summer between sailing lessons, weekend racing, and just hanging out and enjoying the sun and the new BBQ. We have welcomed a bunch of new members this year as everyone starts to realize that VBYC is the place to be! Come down to the club and see what all the buzz is about. We are always happy to show prospective sailors around the club – you might even find yourself out for a sail or crewing in the weekend races. Sailors, non-sailors, adult refreshment and canned beverage enthusiasts, music lovers, and dancers are eagerly anticipating THIS SUNDAY’s Yacht Club Dance. The Brock Street Bandits will play all the summertime hits, the Sunset Soundsystem DJs will keep the jams going between sets, and the Commodore will probably have his hair done really nicely. World famous limited edition VBYC t-shirts and koozies are available for purchase along with modestly priced drinks – cash only, no ATM. The party gets underway at 8pm on Sunday, July 31st at the VB Community Centre by the sports field up the highway. All proceeds benefit the VBYC, junior sailing, and the VB Community Club. Tickets are selling fast so cast off your lines, shake the reefs out of your sails, and set your course for the Parking Lot or the VB Store to secure yours for $20. There could be a few left to buy at the door but don’t risk it! Anyone who was lucky enough to get a ticket to last year’s event will tell you that this is not one to miss. See you on the d floor.

Victoria Beach HERALD

For the Sake of Our Lake, Support the Walk on Sunday, August 7th The Victoria Beach and district Walk for Water is an annual fundraising event in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF), an organization devoted to finding solutions that will improve the health of our beautiful lake. Please consider being a part of this important effort and bring along a couple friends! Registration will begin at the VB Clubhouse at 9:15 AM and the Walk will start at 10. Following the Walk there will be a prize draw for participants plus freezies! (Also, as they register, each participant will receive a Walk for Water T shirt!) Pledge forms are available at all key VB locations, at the Senior Scene, at Saffie’s in Albert Beach, online at lakewinnipegfoundation. org AND a pledge form has been inserted into every copy of this issue of the Herald! Also, pledge forms, information about the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, and opportunities to help the cause will be available at the LWF table situated alongside the VB Club Raffle on the Village Green on Saturday, July 30th from 10 till 4. Stroll over for a chat! Participants: be assured that whether you bring in $20 or $200, your walking out of concern for Lake Winnipeg in solidarity with other like-minded folks will be both very significant and hugely appreciated – and it’s also fun and good for you! (Remember that there will be two routes to choose from: 2.5 km and 5 km.) However, to those who cannot walk for whatever reason, know that you can still support this worthy event/cause by signing a walker’s pledge form or by simply making a donation to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation in support of the VB Walk for Water. Donations of $20 and over will receive a tax receipt. GET SET FOR THE 2016

VB BIKE RACE SUNDAY JULY 31st We are all geared up for another fantastic bike race. Weather permitting, registration will start promptly at 9:30am Sunday morning down at the sports field. Kids ages 4-18 are welcome. All registrants must have their membership wrist bands to register. In order to keep the competition fair, all bikes with gears will be taped at the registration table. Awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for boys and girls in the following age categories: 4 & 5 year olds (short course) 6 & 7 year olds (medium course) 8 & 9 year olds (medium course) 10 to 12 year olds (medium course) 13 to 18 year olds (long course) All the courses will be colour coded with signs along the road for the riders to follow. The course colours will be identified to the riders the day of the race. We are looking for 13 volunteers to be out on the course to make sure the riders stay on track. Please call Todd Hyra at 204-782-8906 to volunteer. Short Course - starts at the sports field, up Sunset to Arthur, follow Arthur to 8th Avenue at the parking lot, down 8th Avenue only to Centre Street, follow Centre Street to the Village Green turning onto Gibson Street then down to the sports field finish line. Medium Course - starts at the sports field, up Sunset to Patricia, follow Patricia to 8th Avenue, down 8th Avenue to Gibson Street and all the way back to the sports field finish line. Long Course - starts at the sports field, up Sunset all the way to the end where it meets up with 8th Avenue, then up and down 8th Avenue to Gibson Street and all the way back to the sports field finish line. Note of caution to pedestrians and casual bike riders Sunday morning 10am to 11am, please yield to racers along the course paths noted above. All riders must wear their safety helmets, plus proper clothing and footwear (closed toe shoes). Loose gravel and pot holes can make the courses challenging for all riders, so please ride with control. Important, parents please explain the following information to your riders: At the finish line all riders will be given a numbered popsicle stick to mark their order, this number does not reflect their category placement. The popsicle stick must then be handed in at the registration desk for a final tally of the winners in each of the age categories. Trophy winners from last year, if you haven’t already returned the trophies, please return them to Todd or Sheri Hyra at 317-3rd Ave by Friday July 29th. Good luck to all participants. Have fun and race safe! Coordinators The Hyra Family

Do you have faulty feet? We have had a number of good articles in the Herald by Brian Yagi on the importance of fair play in tennis. This article concerns itself with foot faults. A foot fault is a rule violation which means that the server’s foot/feet is/are on the court surface before the racquet contacts the ball. Moving one’s feet onto the court (including the baseline) brings one closer to the net and magnifies the area of the court that is being served to, thus giving an advantage to the player who breaks the rule. The reason that the rule is broken is basically ignorance. We don’t know what our feet are doing while we are trying to hit the ball. To know whether or not you are committing a foot fault is quite simple. Have someone observe you when you serve. If you are stepping/shuffling onto the court before hitting the ball, there are two ways to correct the problem. One is to change your service motion (difficult). The other is to move a few inches or centimeters back of the baseline. This will result in a bit of loss in the impact of the serve, which is reason why we try to start our motion as close to the line as possible. By giving accurate line calls and serving according to the rules we respect our opponents. We may still commit a foot fault on occasion but they will not habitual and do little to affect the outcome of the game. Stuart Juzda

Proceeds Support the Victoria Beach Doctor’s Office and First Responders

I was asked again this week, “Where are the AEDs?” Now, some of you are probably asking, “What is an AED?” AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. They are portable electronic devises that diagnose life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and then treat them through defibrillation. AEDs are designed to be used by a layperson and can be highly effective if used quickly during a cardiac arrest. Victoria Beach is equipped with several AEDs and they are accessible at the following locations: VB Clubhouse (when unlocked, swim instructors have access) - inside front entrance, on right VB Tennis Courts - ask court attendant Victoria Beach Community Center - inside front doors on right, next to the kitchen door VB Fire Dept - one in Fire Rescue Unit, one in Water Rescue vessel and one in Medical First Responder Unit VB Police Dept. - in Police Vehicle Knowing the location of the nearest AED, calling 911, and applying knowledge learned from taking first aid and CPR courses could help save a life. The “Best Spot on the Lot” Raffle raises money for the Victoria Beach Medical Assistance Fund. These funds are used to purchase equipment for the Doctor’s Office and our First Responders. The tickets are $2.00 each and the draw is Sunday Sept. 4th. First Prize is free reserved prime parking for 2017 season. Second prize is 4 free taxi rides. Third prize is a $75.00 Gift Certificate to Carol’s on Leon. Fourth prize is a Gift Package from Tiffanie’s Beauty Salon. Tickets are available at the Parking Lot and Tiffanie’s Beauty Salon on Ateah Rd. I will be selling tickets on the village green on Saturday, July 30th from 10:00 to 4:00. Come see me. Each year the Summer Winds Family Music Festival gets bigger and better and this 10th Anniversary event was the best yet. The 1st kids’ bicycle parade was a sight to behold with a lot of effort going into decorating their bikes. The lucky winners are 1st prize Carolina & Diana Corona for Miss Pinky, 2nd prize Summer Winds Bicycle (could the parents please contact Nancy 204756-3749 to confirm their son’s name) and we will congratulate him in the next issue, 3rd prize Isla Scurfield for Mini Flower Pot. Thanks to Police Chief Stewart MacPherson for leading the parade. The children’s tent was a popular favorite enjoyed by kids of all ages with face painting, crafts, amazing balloon artists, etc. The creative volunteers do a wonderful job and kids come away decorated to the nines, with tulle barrettes, skirts, hula hoops and all kinds of fabulous balloon creations. And SMILES. Big smiles. And what festival doesn’t have delicious food? As usual, the talent was great, but one of the best things about the festival is that it gives local youngsters and oldsters an opportunity to shine. The singing, dancing and playing was

fantastic. A little rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of those who came to see the headline bands – a little something for everyone, culminating in a super show by Colin James. And, as all good things in Victoria Beach, enough cannot be said about the tremendous efforts of all the volunteers and dedicated sponsors who make this huge event possible. Without their support we would be unable to have an annual SWFMF. Planning for next year’s festival will begin almost immediately and continue all winter and spring to ensure an epic 2017 Summer Winds. Look forward to seeing you there. Yacht Club Dance Hurricanes aren’t usually an issue on the Canadian Prairies but VB Yacht Club forecasters have reason to believe that a convergence of several systems could create a significant event at Victoria Beach in the next few weeks. Tropical Storm Fraser Frasier is on a northerly track from its current location at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and, if models prove accurate, the remnants of the storm could reach the Lake Winnipeg area in the next few weeks. Berks ‘Bilgewater’ Trembles, Head of Marine and Social Forecasting, also expressed concern about a low pressure system that’s been languishing near the shores of Lake Ontario in the past few weeks. Hurricane Quinny is lazily moving around with no particular cause or direction, but models indicate the possibility of it moving west and strengthening. Trembles said the models are not powerful enough to predict what might happen if Frasier and Quinny converge at Victoria Beach simultaneously. Scientists were overheard whispering about ‘The Sunset Soundsystem’. A team of experts has been dispatched – The Brock Street Bandits have assured local authorities that rock music and dancing will be enough to confine the event to a designated area. Jonathan Tall Tide, VBYC’s Head of Lubrication and Fuel Services, has ensured that copious amounts of adult refreshments will be available for purchase. The Oliver Pollard design team will have limited edition Victoria Beach Yacht Club shirts and koozies on hand to keep you warm and your beverage cold. Batten down the hatches and join the party at the VB Community Centre at the sports field off Hwy 59 on Sunday, July 31 after 8pm. This was a hot ticket last year, so sheet in and set your course for the Parking Lot or VB Store to pick up a ticket for $20. All proceeds benefit the Victoria Beach Yacht Club, junior sailing development, and the VB Community Centre.

Athlete Development for Tennis

It’s supposed to take 10 years and 10,000 hours of training to reach top performance. This rule has many parents wondering if their children should be participating in one sport year around. Luckily, researchers have created Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), a framework for advancing “physical literacy” (the mastering of fundamental sport skills in a wide range of situations). Some general findings from the LTAD suggest 1) athletes should not participate in any one sport for more than 6 months without a break, 2) most sports do not require year-round participation (referred to as specialization) until after the age of 12 and 3) training requirements depend on the type of sport, maturity level of an athlete, and the mental skills required. Whether parents want to help their child progress into elite sport or to foster a physically active lifestyle, the LTAD provides guidelines for appropriate athlete development. According to research, tennis is a late specialization sport with an early initiation requirement. This means that children should be introduced to tennis between the ages of 6 and 10 but do not need to train only in tennis until after the age of 12. In fact, it is recommended that young tennis players participate in sports such as basketball, soccer, swimming, hockey or any sport that involves throwing or striking an object. Participating in tennis alone will not develop coordination abilities equally and can contribute to: • One-sided and inadequate overall athletic preparation • Lack of development of basic movement and sport skills • Overuse injuries • Muscle imbalances • Early burnout • Early retirement from training and competition Athlete development also depends on the maturity level of the individual. Children mature at different rates and ages, (1011yrs. girls, 12-13 yrs. boys) and it usually take three to four years to complete. However, some mature early and others up to 4 years later,

creating advantages and disadvantages in sport. Late developers have a longer period of time to develop physical literacy, but are often beaten by their early maturing peers. Many kids who mature later become discouraged by the lack of success and drop out. Early developers tend to have more success in the early years primarily because they are bigger, stronger, faster and more skilled. However, tracking of “outstanding” performers in elementary schools found that only 25% were still outstanding in later years, suggesting that early success does not predict later success. So, late maturers may have greater long term potential if they continue in sport. Mental training is critical for athlete development because handling success and failure often determines the player’s motivation. As athletes progress, mental training demands move from basic skills to complex skills which are then tested in increasingly difficult competitive environments. Here’s an example:

Tennis Fundamentals Stage (Females 6-8 yrs, Males 6-9 yrs: Orange Ball) At this stage, players in a competitive stream could play between 8-10 hrs a week max (includes 2 hrs of physical training) with at least 8 weeks off per year. Games should include 6-10 tournaments per year using ¾ court. The recreational stream athlete could play up to 2 hrs/week with other sports/physical activity around 5hrs/week. is to provide opportunities to learn something new and have fun with friends. Basic concepts of relaxation and imagery can be introduced in fun ways. Positive self-talk and simple focusing activities can be started by encouraging athletes to try again after mistakes and keep a positive perspective. Children’s experiences, perceptions, thoughts, and feelings should be acknowledged. Basic rules and ethics should also be introduced (e.g., calling lines fairly, keeping accurate score). Parents can help by asking; Was it fun? What did you learn today? What did the coach say? and by highlighting any positives from training and competition. Tennis Learn to Train Stage (Females 8-11 yrs; Males 9-12 yrs: Green Ball) At this stage, players in a competitive stream could play between 10-18* hrs a week max. (includes 6 hrs of physical training) with at least 8 weeks off per year. (*18 hours is generally only used for 12 yrs. old in the National Program). Games should include both singles and doubles with 8-15 tournaments per year. The recreational stream athlete could play up to 3hrs/week with other sports/physical activity around 4hrs/week. Mentally, basic principles of goalsetting are incorporated into training along with an emphasis on effort and responsibility. An awareness of the demands, pressures, and competitive nervousness are worked on. Athletes should develop focus skills that allow them to CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

CONTINUED From Page 23 connect with what they are doing and get the most out of their training and performance. Imagery and positive thinking are taught to develop confidence and motivation, while energy control (relaxation and activation) can be used to manage intensity and emotion. Work ethic, responsibility, and passion for sport should be established as athletes begin recognizing that hard work and a good attitude lead to improvement. Parents can help by encouraging athletes to reflect on their performances by asking; what did you do well? What can you improve on? What was most fun? and instruct athletes to visualize at least one thing they did well in training or competition to build confidence. The next three LTAD stages require athletes to specialize in tennis alone. It is during these stages when private coaching, strength

conditioning, nutrition, and biomechanics could be included. Mental training will now shift to advanced skills such as competition planning, and managing pressures and expectations of performance. Although it might take 10,000 hours to become an elite athlete, parents should consider how maturity level, sport type, and mental training demands can influence success and failure for athletes under the age of 12. She has been coming to VB for 18 years with her husband Tim Richardson (VB family cottage dates back to 1959).

Tennis Reminder The following is taken from the VB Tennis Rules poster displayed on each of the two tournament draw boards and on the kiosk. • Players will sign in with court attendant, providing their names and shoe tag numbers. (all members must be present and give their shoe tag numbers) • No player presently on the courts can sign up for another court time. (this includes GVS) • If you are not present when your name is called for a court, you may lose your place in the rotation and have to sign up again. (court attendants will try to give you an estimated wait time; however, if someone drops out, all the times advance and if you are not present you will lose your place in the rotation) • Good sportsmanship, courtesy and fair play are expected from players at all times. (All members, adults and children, should familiarize themselves with the rules of tennis etiquette and ensure that they are followed at all times.)

Membership As we cruise through the avenues of our own piece of paradise, we hear the hustle and bustle of the community. Kids playing, some having water fights that we may or may not have been caught up in, and others shaking off the sand from the day at the beach. The community coming together for another year of adventure and relaxation. Bringing new and old friends together. Kids forming lifelong relationships and carrying on the legacy of those before them. It is the sound of laughter, chatter and the beautiful sights and sounds of nature that surround us. This is membership. This is Victoria Beach. Annual VB Pedalling for Wishes Ride On August 24th, 2016 the 7th Bi-Annual Victoria Beach Police “Pedaling for Wishes Ride” will take place. This marathon bike ride is in support of the Children Wish Foundation which grants wishes for children with a life-threatening illness. The bike ride starts at the Victoria Beach gate and ends with a police escorted ride through Portage and Main with a grand finish at the Travelodge on Fermor Road in Winnipeg. Riders that participant in the ride raise money through donation or sponsorships. A booth will be set up this year in the village green on Sunday August 1st from 12:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon to explain the ride and collect donations. Support of any size will be gratefully accepted. Let’s work together to grant some deserving children their wish. The more money raised the more children we can help. In 2014 the ride raised over $30,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation and granted several children their dream wish. This year’s ride is dedicated to granting the wish of a special 5 year old named Hope. Within moments of her birth, Hope struggled to breathe. She was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit where she was intubated (tube down her throat) to help her tiny body get oxygen. A few hours later she was transferred to another hospital

in Winnipeg and barely 24 hours after her birth was flown by air ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. She was diagnosed with Pulmonary Atresia with Atrial Septal Defect, a serious congenital heart defect that is often diagnosed before birth, but in Hope’s case did not show up in any of her fetal scans. While in Edmonton, Hope underwent PDA litigation and then had open heart surgery to put a central shunt in her chest. Several days later she had to undergo the procedure again to revise the shunt because it had clotted. Hope responded very well after the second surgery, and by the time she was 5 weeks old she could go home with her family. Although she lives with very low oxygen levels, she always seems to have more energy than her mom and dad! Hope hasn’t decided yet what her Wish will be, but is having a lot of fun thinking about all the possibilities. She has some really great ideas - like taking a rocket ship up to see the moon (but only if Queen Elsa from the movie Frozen can come too), and meeting a “real, live unicorn”. Help us grant Hope and other children their wishes! Donations can be made at the information booth at the gate, next Sunday in the village green or to any participating riders.

Victoria Beach Police and The Moonlight Inn Team up to Reward “Helmet-Wearing” Cyclists

Are you aware that under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act, Bicycle Helmets are now mandatory for every cyclist under the age of 18? It doesn’t matter if a cyclist is riding a bike, a passenger on a bike or riding in a pull behind chariot, everyone under 18 years must wear an approved Helmet at all times. The Highway Traffic Act governs all roads, including the roads in our Restricted Area. It also doesn’t matter if you are cycling to the Beach, the Moonlight Inn, the Playground, or the Bakery; you must be wearing a helmet. The fine for not wearing your helmet is $63.10. The cyclist can be fined as well as a parent for allowing their child to ride a bicycle without a helmet. To try and encourage Helmet

wearing in Victoria Beach members of your Victoria Beach Police Bicycle Patrol Unit along with the Moonlight Inn have teamed up to provide a fun incentive. For the rest of the summer Bicycle Patrol Officers will be on the look out for children wearing Helmets and riding their Bicycles in a safe manner. Bicycle Police Officers may randomly reward a Helmet wearing child with a certificate for a FREE Ice Cream (Provided by our friends at the Moonlight Inn). Children are not to approach Bike Officers to show their helmets and ask for a certificate. They must be selected by an Officer to be eligible for the Free Ice Cream. At the end of the season all winners of the Free Ice Cream certificates will be entered into

a grand prize draw to win a $50.00 gift certificate from our good friends at Alter Ego Sports located at 1605 Pembina Hwy. Phone: (204) 475-4908. Alter Ego Sports are also the main sponsors of the V.B.P. “Pedalling for Wishes” ride, which will take place on Wednesday August 24th. Members of the Victoria Beach Police service would like to gratefully acknowledge Joyce and her entire staff at the Moonlight Inn for their generosity regarding this Helmet incentive program. Their kindness and caring have made this summer program possible. We would also like to thank Jeff, James, Heather and all their great staff at Alter Ego Sports for their kind support as well. Paint Nite Victoria Beach

This is your big chance!! Wow! What a fantastic summer of events so far! What an amazing group of volunteers we have to convene our events – both regular events and special events. We have some new convenors this summer and still our events keep running no problem. Shauna and I have been your Special Events convenors for 3 years and we are happy to pass on our duties. We recruited Lindsay Stevenson for this summer to learn the role. And, as of Sports Day, we have found her a new partner – Cathy Carlson! Thanks ladies for volunteering to keep our programs going. This job involves organizing volunteer convenors before the season and getting the calendar ready to print. AND it involves asking new people to take on events. Not easy!! So, if you are ready, please contact us and help keep the Flea Market going. We need someone to partner up with Lyndsi and also to head up the clean-up as Lorraine Cook is retiring after many years. If we don’t find a volunteer, we will not have this event and it can be tricky to find volunteers before the summer starts. So, talk to your friend and come on board… you can do it!! Kids Fishing Derby

It was a blustery morning for the anglers on the pier at the 2016 kids fishing derby. The strong winds and high waves washed over the south end of the pier leaving only the lower north end for the kids to set their hooks and cast out to the calmer waters. Forty of vb’s finest anglers participated in the derby and caught a total of twelve fish over the two hours from 9am to 11am. Maggie Sirrell lead the derby off with the first fish being caught at 9:10am. Luke Bushuk won the mystery ice cream round and Jordan York won the lucky loonie round. Winning anglers by category were: Biggest Fish 1st place Maggie Sirrell 22.5 inch pike 2nd place Troy Marten 13.5 inch sauger 3rd place Evan York 13 inch sauger Smallest Fish 1st place Luke Bushuk 8 inch perch 2nd place Zach Hulme 11.5 inch sauger 3rd place Prim Bargen 12 inch sauger Jordan York 12 inch sauger Most Fish 1st place Prim Bergen 2 fish Luke Bushuk Maggie Sirrell 2nd place Charlsey Goetz 1 fish Troy Marten Zach Hulme Jordan York Evan York Congratulations to everyone who participated.
