Get Set for the 2015 VB Bike Race Sunday July 26th Are you and your bikes ready for the annual Bike Race? This year’s race will be held Sunday July 26th at the sports field. Registration will start promptly at 9:30am, all kids aged 4-18 are welcome. Awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for boys and girls in the following age categories: • 4 & 5 year olds (short course) • 6 & 7 year olds (medium course) • 8 & 9 year olds (medium course) • 10 to 12 year olds (medium course) • 13 to 18 year olds (long course) If you are not familiar with the bike courses, not to worry - all the courses will be colour coded with signs along the road so even the youngest of riders can follow. More detail on the courses will be outlined next week. To keep things running smoothly, we would like approximately 13 adult volunteers on race day to assist with keeping the riders on track. Please call Todd Hyra at 204-782-8906 if you can help on race day. This year all riders must wear a safety helmet and we strongly suggest wearing proper clothing and footwear - loose gravel and pot holes can make the courses challenging and dangerous at times. Trophy winners from last year, please return the trophies to Todd or Sheri Hyra at 317-3rd Ave. no later than Friday July 24th. Look in the Herald next week for more information on the Bike Race and make plans to be at the sports field for Sunday morning. See you then. We look forward to a fun and safe race! Thanks Coordinators - The Hyra Family

Council Corner

Update on the Public Works Building Many of you are aware that last year our Public Works building was deemed to be an unfit work place. In the East Beaches magazine delivered to your door in May our Council news suggested that by now we hoped to have construction of the new building under way. (But that item was written in midMarch). As you can see, we are not there yet. We would like to explain some of the process. Council sought an engineering firm through a Request for Proposals process. This occurred in October 2014. Council then interviewed the 2 engineering firms who responded and chose HDK engineering. We asked about the benefits and drawback of a wood frame building verses a steel frame building. Council asked them to design a robust building, one that would stand up and perform for many years and be energy efficient The engineers and architects from HDK came to the beach in late November, met with the entire Public Works staff, discussed their needs, walked though the Public Works building, and completed a needs assessment based on equipment used and maintenance practices. In January a design was provided to Council by HDK. The drawings and specifications are available on the RM website. The building meets the new energy code for a Part 9 commercial building. One feature of the building is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) as well a boiler for the hydronics of the infloor heating. The ERV system, while

expensive, will pay for itself in savings on the electricity in 5.09 years at TODAY’s hydro rates. The total energy payback is estimated at almost $340,000 over 20 years at today’s rates. Because Hydro forecasts major rate increases, Council thought it prudent to be sure we were building a facility which had a payback to the taxpayers rather than huge operating costs. Council then asked that a Quantity Survey be done on the drawings, an estimate of how much it might cost to build that building. The estimate was almost $2 million dollars. This number was then placed in the Financial Plan which every municipality must provide for the provincial government each year. The Financial plan was advertised and was placed on our website. The building then went out to tender across Canada in accordance with the Municipal Act. A condition of placing a bid was a “contractor site visit at Victoria Beach. Sixteen firms sent representatives to the April meeting.. A total of six bids were received. Council, together with our engineering firm, opened the tenders and after some due diligence re experience and bid bonds etc. the low bid of $1,550, 000 was accepted. We next compared rates of various financial institutions, made a selection and sent the terms on to the provincial government for their approval. At present we are awaiting their response.

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 90th year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints ten issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadlines are end of day Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days.

Victoria Beach HERALD

Policeman’s Corner VB Police responded to 167 calls for service for the month of June, which included: 1 male arrested for Mischief and Public Intoxication. He was detained overnight in jail. 14 bear calls. Bears are looking for food. No food at your place = no bears either. 8 parking tickets… 6 traffic tickets and 3 warning tickets. 7 - 911 emergency calls. …and 4 thefts. We have our new radar units up and running, 2015 Genesis 2 multi-directional moving radar. The VBP applied for and received a grant for the purchase which cost $6,600.00 for the 2 units, $800.00 for the installation and $800.00 for training. The money came from the Criminal Property Forefeiture arm of Manitoba Justice. We can now monitor your speed coming OR going away from us. The new LGCA fines are out, set by the Province ( Liquor and Gaming Control Act ) Sec. 57(1) is “have liquor in public place” and the fine is $673.65 and that is not a typo. Sec. 63 is “ being a minor, possess liquor” . Same fine. $673.65 … Just saying… A handicapped pass is just that, for the handicapped. If you have one in the vehicle but the person who is handicapped is not in the vehicle that does not give you the rights appertaining to that pass. If you park and merrily sprint away to your golf game, you can be ticketed for improper use, have the pass pulled and… you may have taken the spot away from someone who truly needed it and thereby inconvenienced them. Shame. Stewart MacPHERSON VB Police Chief

V.B. Club Membership Sales Going Strong! Membership sales have been a little different this year with a later door-to-door canvass, but we are delighted to report that sales are pretty much on par with last year’s. At this time last year, the Club had raised a total of approximately $38,000 through membership and tennis shoe-tag sales and donations. As of July 9th this year, the total was $36,465.15, broken down as follows: $23,150 memberships (463 memberships sold) $8,040 tennis shoe tags (536 shoe-tags sold) $5,275.15 donations Wow! Thank you to everyone who supported the Club through their membership and shoe-tag purchases and donations! We could not have done this without the generous donation of time from so many wonderful people. We had some extra helpers come forward after the submission deadline for the Herald, and we learned that there are a few people who have been helping with the canvass for years without recognition. So this week, we would like to recognize and thank Robin (8) and Soren (6) Wallace for helping their mother Heather canvass, Sam and Emily Brownell for canvassing in their mother Emily’s place when she had to be away, and Terry Angus, John Falkenberg, Peter Burnett and Jeff Hollins for canvassing along with their wives, this year and in the past.

For those in our community who do not yet have a membership and want to enjoy all the beach club programs, activities and services (including the Herald you are reading), fear not - you can still purchase a membership at: • The Library and Tennis Courts during regular hours, • The Information Booth at the V.B. Gate from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Whether you are just arriving to open-up your cottage or are visiting or renting for a short while, please remember that you and your children need your very own membership and wrist-bands (blue this year) to participate in the activities offered by the V.B. Club. The membership fees and donations are the primary source of revenue for everything the Club does - from Sports Day, Arts & Crafts and Movie Nights to bridge, aerobics and publishing the Herald! When you stop to think about it, is there any other place where you could keep your family active and entertained for several hours each and every day for up to seven weeks for a grand total of just $50? If you don’t think your family would make any use of a membership, please consider making a donation to support the Club that does so much to make our community so special! Donations can be made wherever memberships can be purchased. Thanks again to everyone who made the membership sales so successful! Please remember that the V.B. Club always welcomes new canvassers and very much needs one or two people to take the lead role on the Membership Team for 2016 - feel welcome to give one of us a call if you are interested. Have a great summer! Pamela Beazley (204-756-3682) Lise Simonsen (204-791-3852)

Sandcastle Results

It was threatening rain before we started, but apart from the odd drop as judging started, it held off, and the true, hot July sun even graced the prime construction hour from about 10-11! Contestants who had perhaps originally decided against coming therefore continued to arrive almost right up to the judging hour, and the competition got tougher and tougher. Thanks are in order to the rec assistants, Brendan, Tess, Sam and John, for all their help, as well as to Allysa Willison, to Abby Meadows, to Kirsty, Matt and James Cook, and to Annie MacRae. It wouldn’t have happened without you! The results of the non-competitive agegroup categories are as follows: 8 & UnderSmoothest and Most Prolific Animal: “ A Snake” by Stella, Will and Isla McCaig Best Designer and Best Construction Worker: “Seaside” by Aleta and Max Pollard Most Waterproof: “Sand Palace” by Curtis St.John 12 & UnderBest Action Model, with Birds’ Eye View Inset: “Volcano” by Eddie and Isla Partridge Best Political History & Urban Planning: “River City Blues” by Devin Botar, Nadir Botar and Roman Huculak Most Realistic, & Best Use of Live Theatre: “Shark Attack” by Richard, Jacob, Walter and Charles Chaytor Best Full-Scale Mission Plan: “Naval Convoy” by Easton Hyra, Travis Hyra, Keagan Armstrong, Scott Kosokowsky and Aaron Pattison (As judge of these categories I have to say that I am grateful I didn’t have to rank them. They each had amazing creativity, really good craftsmanship, and they were all completely different. I was blown

away! Thanks to all of you for sharing your enthusiastic backstories and challenges with me!) The results of the competitive categories were as follows:

Anything Goes 1. “Wack-a-Minion” by Branden, Cameron, Jeff and Laureen Lailey 2. “A FlipFlop” by Georgia and Chloe Wilson, Brooke Oxenforth, Caitlyn Willison and McKenna Larsen 3. “Brachiosaur” by Cohen and Simon Bedard

Swim Program News The VB Swim Program wants YOU!

Yoga News

VB Swim wants 11 and 12 year olds to sign up for the Session 2 Babysitting course. The first session group is having a lot of fun together and learning good stuff. Second session starts July 27. Babysitting course runs Monday/Wednesday/Friday 1:30-2:30 at the Swim Dock. VB Swim wants a record number to come out for the 800 Meter Open Swim on July 25 at 2 PM at the Pier (come early to register). NEW this Year – put together a relay team of 4 swimmers and swim the course as a team. Individual swimmers will swim the race first and then we’ll do the relay. VB Swim wants you to continue to sign up for Swimming Lessons any weekday morning from 9:30-10:30 at the Swim Dock. At $25 per session lessons are such a steal of a deal that even if your child can only attend for part of a session they still get experience swimming in a lake (murky, sometimes choppy, etc.) and it is a great way for them to meet other kids their ages and for parents to meet other families as they sit together at the beach/swim dock.

It is wonderful to see so many people joining our new yoga instructors at 10:00 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Clubhouse. As Jordan wrote in an article last week, the classes and postures are accessible to students of all shapes, ability and experience. Instructors will give cues as to modifications and/or variations within the poses, so that each practitioner can tailor the practice to their own needs. Amelia and Jordan will continue to share teaching responsibilities, but Jordan will now generally teach on Tuesdays and Amelia on Thursdays. Please remember to bring a mat to practice on, water to drink, and a wristband to indicate your membership in the VB Club (due to the high number in attendance, we will be checking for wristbands at the door). In the spirit of peace and tranquility that is yoga, we also ask that phones be put in silent mode and that children not accompany their parents (older teens are most welcome to join in practice). Namaste. Pamela Beazley and Jenny Hasenack-Bru

Meet Some of VB’s LWF Volunteers

July 17, 2015

9

Here are some of the fantastic local people who volunteer for Lake Winnipeg Foundation: front row, left to right: Deanne McDonald, Walk for Water coconvenor 2014 and 2015; Diane Sallens, LWF Board Treasurer and lifelong VB resident; Ella Carmichael, lifelong VBer who swam many lengths in the lake as an early fundraiser; Janet Sampson, former board member who first brought LWF to the east side of the lake; Sandy McCaig, Walk for Water co-convenor 2014 and 2015; Mike Sampson, \Jack-of-All-Trades and our own MacGyver, holding a member of the generation for whom we must restore the lake Back row, left to right: Sheila Grover, former LWF board member and sous-chef; Sophie McGoey, French chef and mastermind of French Dinner fundraisers; Bill McDonald, former VB reeve and current LWF board member; Karen Paul, Brokenhead Wetlands link and wood engraving print fundraiser, Greg Thomas, all-round support and yearly Walk for Water volunteer. Thank you all for all you do.

Though the length of our Victoria Beach experiences may vary, the strength of our love for this wonderful beach community and its great lake does not. Lake Winnipeg is where we swim, fish, sail and paddle. We spend happy hours on its beaches, walking, building sand castles, soaking up the rays, visiting with friends and watching the sunset. And often, we just marvel over its vast expanse. Therefore when our beautiful lake shows obvious signs of deterioration, do we want to be a part of seeking solutions? You bet we do! And this is where the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) comes in. LWF got its start in a small way 10 years ago with a few individuals who were passionate about restoring the health of Lake Winnipeg. Since then, the group has grown considerably, attracting likeminded supporters and hiring dedicated, knowledgeable staff. It has been tremendously successful in raising awareness, educating citizens and policy-makers, and promoting good lake stewardship. LWF strives to make informed, science-based decisions and is making strides in the areas of research and monitoring. Lastly, it collaborates with dedicated organizations that work toward its concerns and goals. VBers and east-side lakers have been strong LWF supporters in years past, so we are asking for your continued dedication. We can win this. Please plan on taking part in finding solutions for Lake Winnipeg by supporting the Victoria Beach district’s Walk for Water event on August 9th. You can walk, pledge or make a donation. The Walk routes are 5km or 2.5km, stroller and dog friendly, leaving the

VB Clubhouse at 10 AM to beat the heat. Registration begins at the Clubhouse at 9:15. There will be draw prizes and treats for all. Posters are up and pledge forms are available at all VB outlets as well as at Saffie’s in Albert Beach. You can also register online at lakewinnipegfoundation.org For more information or if you would like to volunteer, contact one of VB’s Walk for Water co-convenors: Deanne McDonald (204756-2911 or cell 204-232-2656 deamcd@mymts.net) and Sandy McCaig (204-756-8855 or sandy.mccaig@gmail.com). LWF office convenor Stephanie Brick can also answer enquiries regarding sponsorship or other Walk questions at 204-956-0436 or events@ lakewinnipegfoundation.org

Summer Yoga at VB ‘Tantric Hatha Yoga’ classes are grounded in an ancient teaching that is often referred to in yoga texts as ‘Advaita’. Advaita is a word that means non-duality in English. Non duality means not separate. Not separate means infinite love. There is only love and there is only consciousness. The ego is a fear mechanism designed to keep the human animal safe. You are safe if you are reading these words and that awareness of the truth is the awakening of your own heart. During Jordan’s classes, you will be withdrawn from your ever day life story to drop deeply inside your heart and ask the profound soul question “Who am I?” The asanas (yoga postures) in the practice are a celebration of health, a surrender of the mind to love and an expansion of conscious bliss through your cells. Each yoga class is 90 minutes long and is fully accessible to students of all ages, and of all shapes and sizes. The postures are accessible to everyone. Please bring a yoga mat to class. Water drinking is also an important ritual in the practice and designated water breaks are built into the spiritual template of the classes. It’s an honour to share this practice with you. Let’s build community. Let’s uncover our true kind Self together with the ancient wisdom of Tantric Hatha Yoga. Thank you, Jordan Bellan, Yoga Instructor

Well, summer is in full swing and so is the VBYC. Our first week of sailing school ran July 6-10. The enthusiasm of the new sailors may only be eclipsed by the coaches and it is great to see interest from all ages. As we like to say, you are never too young or too old to sail. The weeks of July 13-17; July 2731; and August 3-7 remain and a few spots are available, go to www.vbyc.ca and follow the link to sign-up. On Sunday, July 19th, the VBYC is again hosting a Sailor’s Derby where dinghies/ boards sail to various locations in the bay, draw a numbered poker chip and after 5 locations the highest total wins the derby. Sailing begins at 1:00 PM with a deck barbecue at 12:00 PM with dogs/burgers and drinks supplied by the Yacht Club -- Eat first then sail. We had 25 participants last year, this year we hope to have more. How about getting that sailing machine out on the water and fill the bay with sailing dinghies, boards and whatever you have that is wind powered. This is a fun event for all, how about coming out. We need crew for weekend racing! If you have ever wanted to cruise over the waves on a Hobie Cat please come down to the yacht club before 10am or get in touch with

8 at the Gate - Why We Ride

Because it is fun! Beer, Einfeld’s cinnamon buns, I hate my wetsuit, Riding is a great anti-depressant and weight loss pill combined, Don’t have to keep score or book tee times, Did I mention beer? VB Country Market

Rainy day with Alanna & Anita No rain last week. Do you have your Stump Stove? Need a “hostess” gift? Have you enjoyed the delectable baking and nutritious granola supplied by Alanna and Anita? Back for a second year, these two friends are clearly happy to bring their talents to the market. Joining them are the vendors who are spacing out their time here. And what a surprise to see the new veggie van from St. Georges! Every week is a different experience. Not only are the vendors changing it up, but visitors come from far and wide! Volunteers are working to get the Sports Club finished, so do stop in to see the new facility and have a bite to eat or a coffee at the Coffee Stop, open Friday and Saturday mornings. Tell your friends: “Meet me at the Market”. For information, of volunteer to help, contact Margaret at 204-756-2181. See you there! Open 10-1 pm Saturdays in July and August.

Sports Day 2015

As usual, we were so lucky to have a fabulous group of dedicated volunteers to pull off another fun-filled (and very, very hot) sports day. In fact I would bet that Allison Guest and Karen Mitchell have been the longest running volunteers ever – they were recording the names of all the winners long before we ever became involved. I don’t know how we would survive sports day without them. If you see the following people on the avenues, please extend your appreciation for all of their hard work. Rhys Mitchell, Bill Mitchell, Doug Mitchell, Karen Mitchell, Cathy Finnbogason, Dave Finnbogason, Allison Guest, Doug Guest, Elly Black, Carol Falkenberg, Linnea Kosokowsky, Scott Kosokowsky and of course, Bruce Sirrell and all the rec assistants. Book Sale a Big Success

The VB Club Annual Book Sale, held on July 5 at the Clubhouse, was a success on all fronts. Thanks are in order for all you did in each of the four ways we requested your help! Here’s our thanklist: 1. Donating: Thanks to all of you who together donated a huge number of books—more than we expected! It’s also worth noting that we got very, very few books that were unsalable (falling apart, mildewy, or unusably obsolete). That’s a real treat, and because of it, even the ones we didn’t sell will be desirable for the Children’s Hospital Book Market. 2. Volunteering: Every time we thought we might need another pair of hands, they appeared. And all those that appeared seemed blessedly capable! You saw a lot of volunteers at the sale itself, but many others also put hours of work into setting up and sorting, as well as boxing up leftovers and cleaning up. As newbie convenors we regret to say we overlooked the need to take names. Because of this oversight, we won’t be naming most of those to whom we are giving thanks, for fear of missing too many, but you know who you are: our friends, our families, those stalwart VB volunteers who always show up time and again whenever they are needed, and of course many of the terrific rec staff. Thank you all so much! We would, however, like to mention by name the several former convening families who helped us out so very generously when we sent out a call for expert help and guidance a month or six weeks ago, and continued to help right to the end: the Poultons—Darcey, Tess and Gord; the Meadows—Carolyn and Emily; the Guests—Allison and Sarah; and Dawn Garvie.

3. Buying: Thanks to all who bought books (and quite a few of you who donated over and above your tab)! We raised over $1,300 for the VB Club and Library. 4. Enjoying: Thanks to all who attended for helping to make this a positive community event! It proved to be a bustling, smile-filled afternoon, with summer friends reuniting over casual book-browsing, interspersing questions and answers about the winter past with book recommendations and referrals. Moreover, the entry and payment lines were full of only lovely and pleasant people, even when a bit jammed up! Now the pleasure really begins…Enjoy your new summer reading! And don’t forget: you can continue that relaxed bookbrowsing experience every day at the library! Check your membership package (or the library window) for hours. Learn to Compete By Adam Naylor in Strokes and Strategy Your volleys are crisp on the lesson court but are limp come match time. You manage to learn how to come over your one-handed backhand and really crack it except when the club championship rolls around. After hitting basket upon basket of second serves you find great rhythm but only to push, chop and double fault on game day. According to Adam Naylor of Ivan Lendl International Junior Tennis Academy, lessons and clinics are valuable to the development and enjoyment of one’s tennis game. They provide safe venues where new techniques can take root and confidence can begin to grow. Nonetheless, they say, it is not unusual for newly learned skills to hide when it’s time to play “for real.” This reality can prove to be both a challenge in confidence and patience. Follow these five steps to learn to compete with great success. 1. Take lessons with a learning mindset When learning, it is not so much about where the ball lands as it is about how it was struck. For at least the first half of lessons and drills, commit to caring about technique and ball flight. At the end, worry about where they land. Too often we get “confined by the lines,” judging goodness of an effort by the “in” or “out” call. 2. Practice, practice, practice Get out and do some quality repetitions on your own to reinforce the lessons learned in clinics or with teaching pros. When wise cues are being shouted at you from across the court, new strokes look pretty good; how do they work out when the cues must come from within? 3. Re-evaluate your self-evaluations As you move from the lesson court to the competitive arena, notice how you are evaluating your performances. Is it the scoreboard or your strokes and effort that define your success? Create a game plan for the day with a few simple “keys to success” from your learning in lessons. Allowing the process of playing to guide you will lessen some stress and lead to quality play. 4. Play with perspective Learning anything new and worthwhile in life requires some discomfort and a fair test of time. Remember, one point doesn’t lose a tennis match. Abandoning new techniques after a few lost points or games is walking out on your potential. 5. Trust…get into “play mode” “Thinking” is terrific when trying to learn and make sense of new strokes and strategies. When it is time to compete, the stress of play can short-circuit our deep thoughts. Making technical changes midmatch and assessing if you are playing well or poorly is not time well spent. Choose to play with trust, reacting to shots and filling your head with targets. Save the analysis for later in the clubhouse. Let these five steps be the path from the lesson court to competitive play. You may find yourself stepping back now and again, but committing to each will allow learning to stick, potential to be realized and true enjoyment to take place on the journey.

Down the Middle Solves the Riddle

Where is the best place to put the ball in doubles? Placing it down the middle often solves the riddle of where the ball should go. By hitting down the middle, you put the ball over the lowest part of the net (6 inches lower in the middle than at the sides). You give yourself lots of court to hit into and you often confuse your opponent since they may not be sure who should take the ball. Finally, hitting down the middle doesn’t open up the court and gives your opponent less angles to work with. Remember – down the middle solves the riddle. c/o Tennis and Life Camp

VB Ladies Open Golf Tournament

Wednesday, July 29, 2015 The annual Ladies Golf Tournament is on Wednesday July 29th with some new and fun twists! There will be 2 draws 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM with a “Golf Wind-up” from 3 to 5 at the new VB Community Centre on Hwy 59. Prizes, draws, and a silent auction will take place at the centre while participants visit and enjoy some refreshments including an array of appetizers catered by the Merrymakers in a more comfortable setting. After the tournament, walk or ride down the “Fore Evergreen” trail to the Wind-up at the centre. If you don’t live in the restricted area, remember that there is free parking at the trail entrance. However, if you do live in the restricted area, Karl has kindly agreed to store your clubs at the golf course so you can then pick them up on your way home from the wind-up. Sign up starts July 1st at the Golf Course, so first come, first served. Cost per person is $15.00 plus green fees $13.00 (if you are not a member of the VB Golf Course).

In honour of the opening of the new Victoria Beach Community Centre, we have chosen to donate all proceeds from our tournament to this facility which we are so lucky to have within our East Beaches community. Any prize donations would be greatly appreciated and they can be dropped off at the golf course. So sign-up individually or as a foursome for a day of fun, food, and festivities... and oh yes, golf too! Submitted by 2015 Organizing Committee, Heather Willoughby, Laureen Johnstone, Sally Lawler

Memorial Service

Warren Ralph Purdy passed away in Winnipeg on March 13, 2015. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Sunday, July 26 at 1:30 at the Senior Scene on Ateah Road.

Dr. Grant Benningen

The beach lost a little bit of it's color July 8th with the passing of our dear friend Dr. Grant Benningen. His tremendous height, deep mellifluous voice and nearly waist length ponytail made him easily recognizable in the avenues, but it was his wit and kind, giving nature that made him unforgettable. He spent his medical career tending to the needs to many of the less fortunate in Winnipeg's core area, yet tended to countless musical stars of our times too. People like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Kenny Shields, and Tom Cochrane just to name a few. He was that kind of person, good to all "from the outhouse to the penthouse." After a dire prognosis of just eight weeks to live in May of 2014 he was able to cheat the inevitable by a full fifty two weeks more, and I mean full! This was in no small way due to the determined efforts of his amazing wife Audrey, who insisted upon Grant seeking whatever treatments were available and all the while putting his needs and care well above her own. All of us who know them as a couple are grateful to her and indeed downright inspired by her unflinching commitment. We love you Audrey! Audrey and Grant, as mentioned, used that last 12 months together to the fullest. There was of course visits with the children and grandchildren but there was plenty of travel too. Jamaica, Florida, and even an extended road trip to B.C. Together they packed a whole lot of living into their remaining time together with Grant in relatively good shape. When all treatments were exhausted and the unavoidable approaching they retreated to the place Grant loved best, the place that took him from childhood through manhood, his beloved Victoria Beach. When his time came, it was a peaceful closing with Audrey right there by his side. He was a man of few words, who found that there were many people wanting to hear them, He was a child of this beach, and while a traveller, always knew those travels would bring him right back here and just in time to set out on his next journey.... Graham Cameron simply one of many, many, many friends

Children’s Masquerade Remember that the Children’s Masquerade is coming up next Saturday July 25. We’ll get started at 10am and the location is the same – the Art Vincent Memorial at the Village Green. The sun always shines on the Masquerade but, in the unlikely event of rain, we’ll use the Clubhouse. So dig into Grandma’s tickle trunk and put together your costume. Assuming we’re organized enough, we’ll have small prizes for Best Original costume, Best VB-themed and Best Group costume. If anyone wants to take us up on it, we’ll even

offer up a prize (and a considerable amount of glory) for the Best Adult costume. If, however, you decide you’re too old to dress up we hope you’ll still come down to enjoy the show. Aaron Burnett, our favourite musical entertainer, will be playing once again and no one is too old to try to keep up to the Purple People Eater! Kristie and Doug Pollard
