Eight at the Gate – “After the Ride”

Victoria Beach HERALD

Our Gran Fondo / Gran Colazione (Big Ride / Big Breakfast) may be over but there is still a lot of riding left here and away for our riders, Paul Bunyan Trail MN, Natchez Trace MS, Zion National Park UT, and locally Louis Riel Sr. Trail, Preston / Hart Trails as well as the Red River Skating Trail. We will continue riding at VB through the fall, adjusting start times to 09:00 in a couple of weeks and 10:00 after Labour Day. For further information contact Bob Marshall: cell 204 2614292, jmarsha@mymts.net and Face Book “eight at the gate”.

Winners of Belair Rd Climb, from left, Matt Glowacki (3rd) Lisa Mensink (1st) Matt Frost (2nd). Bob trying to stay ahead of 40 cyclists!

The line for seconds. Three grills, two chefs, one sous-chef and we still couldn’t keep up. Bruce just needs a couple more to use up the syrup on his plate.

Just a few bikes, spot the “Perogy Powered” Tandem.

It is always nice to have a doctor on the ride, two is even better.

Sadly, the days are getting shorter and Victoria Beach Club programs are drawing to a close. It has been another great summer! On behalf of the whole community I’d like to extend a huge thank-you to Suzy Cramp who has completed her term as President (and vicepresident and treasurer before that). She is thoughtful, decisive and seemingly always has the club on her mind! Her impact will last for years to come. If you see her out and about, please say thanks. At our Annual General Meeting last Sunday I put my name forward and was delighted and honoured to be elected as your Club President for the next two years. Most of the folks in this community are more familiar with my wife Nicole and my son Jack than they are with me. For those who don’t know me, I’m the tall guy that never makes it to the king’s side in tennis GVS! All kidding aside, I’m happy to step up and do my part to keep the club running as smoothly as possible. I have been

part of this community for 11 years now and with some guidance from the other talented members on the board, past presidents, and the rec director I expect I’ll do a good job. I’ll keep Suzy’s number really close! The reality is, it is the vast network of volunteers that really make this all work. Please get involved and stay involved if you can. There are lots are large jobs and lots of small jobs and they’re all important. If you’d like to help out and you don’t know what you can do, please reach out to anyone on the board and we’ll get you in touch with the right people. Over the coming weeks, the board and our conveners and rec director will be meeting to discuss what worked well and didn’t work as well this past summer as we plan for next. My email address is camp.clement@gmail.com and I welcome any questions and comments you may have. Please enjoy the rest of your summer! Mike Clement

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 92nd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. This being the final Herald of 2017 we take the time to thank the Victoria Beach Club for the opportunity to serve as editors of this venerable publication. We thank the members of the Club for buying the memberships that make this all possible and for allowing us to splash your images across the pages of our editions as you enjoy the many activities the club convenors work so hard to bring about! Mostly we thank our readers who trust us to bring you these pages weekly and have done so for the past six years! Until next year … Editors

Victoria Beach HERALD

~ Letters to the Editor ~ I have maintained the gardens at 7th and Arthur in memory of my father William (Bill) Brownscombe and at my own personal cost. The gardens bring great delight to many. I was very sad and shocked to hear that a neighbour caught a 65-year-old woman at 5:30 am this week who came with tools and a bag and was caught stealing the flowers in our garden. Early this season, our solar lights in the shape of hummingbirds that glow and change colour were stolen over night! I don’t want to post a sign, but please don’t steal the flowers they aren’t yours! #kindergartenrules Marina James, 202 7th Avenue The End of an Era A must-stop for may VB families over the years has been the Chorney farm north of East Selkirk. In the case of our family we have picked up our fresh vegetables and fruit from the Chorney farm for more than fifty years. Anton Chorney, once Manitoba Farmer of the Year, essentially left the marketing of produce to his wife. In more recent times Mr. Chorney turned over the vegetable business to his son Doug and his wife Michelle. Our children have fond memories of travelling to the field to pick corn when supplies ran out. The Chorney family has been very hospitable to our guests from places as distant as Japan and Mexico. Imagine a ten year old from Tokyo helping to steer a big green John Deere tractor! The vegetables were all “home grown” while most of the fruit was from “somewhere else.” As corn season arrived, the corn initially came from the USA, then Ontario, and finally it was Chorney corn … the best!! Doug Chorney has taken a position with the Board of Grain Commissioners. Michelle continues her work as a nurse at St. Boniface hospital. While Doug maintains his extensive grain operation, the vegetable business has come to an end. It will not be the same without Chorney corn!! The Yarnell Family Hi, my name is Aleta, I’m an eleven-year-old girl who has gone to every Art Thursday so far. I think that Art Thursday is a great activity for adults and kids alike. The art projects are so much fun to do. And the instructors are super nice and give great art tips and great techniques that I would never have learned otherwise. I think that it’s a great experience and a chance to meet new friends. Here are the activities that I’ve done so far: • Book folding: I thought that this had some really cool looks at the end but it does take a lot of patience. • Water colour: painting with Nancy-Lou Ateah I thought she had some really great tips on colour and painting. • Glass pendant making I thought that this was really fun to make and looks really pretty at the end but it does take a little while to get fired. So all in all the projects are really fun to make and they all are very rewarding. And after all there is no better place to do amazing art then our own Victoria Beach Clubhouse listening to the waves roll by, the sea gulls squawk and the leaves blow in the trees. It’s beautiful and perfect in every single way! Aleta Pollard

Welcome to Dr. Wilson Le and Thank You to Dr. Belynda Salter-Oliver Dr. Wilson Le and his family have arrived to serve our community for the next two weeks. He will be with us until Sunday September 3, the latest date we have had service in years. Also thank you to Doctor Belynda Salter-Oliver for her return this summer. We hope that you and your family enjoyed your time with us. Council would like to thank the medical committee and the host of volunteers who clean the yard and cottage in the spring, who pick up medical supplies and bring them up to the lake, those who arrange to fix bikes, fill barbeque tanks, get holding tanks emptied, and, in general, make life easier for our visiting physicians. Volunteers will also close the cottage in the autumn and provide off season storage for valuables. Many people feel this service is valuable enough to give of their time. They deserve our gratitude. The clinic is open daily from 9:30 to 11:30 (except for Wednesday and Friday) and every evening from 5:30 to 7:30. The clinic is located at 124 Birch Avenue. The phone number is 204 756 6305. The last clinic will be Sunday morning, Sept 3rd. Please remember to bring your Manitoba medical card and some cash or a cheque in case you need to buy medication from the clinic. Reeve, Council and Medical Committee

VB Community Church It’s more than half way through August – ouch! It went so fast! All good things come to an end and it has been a good one. We’ve had some great speakers this summer, all giving us something to think about and we enjoyed having Jon Gooosen with us for the first time. Because this is the last Herald, we want to mention our ministers for the last two Sundays of the summer. On the 20th, we have Judy Whitmore -- Judy just retired as priest of St. Michaels Parrish and we welcome her. On the last Sunday, August 27th, we will have Oliver Meads from the Alliance Church with us. PLEASE NOTE: on the 27th we will have our ANNUAL MEETING at 9am before the 10:00am service. We welcome you to join us. Betty Hansford

The Anglican Parish of St. Michael VICTORIA BEACH

Please join us… all are welcome!

~ Beach People ~

Long time VB Golfers This intrepid golf group has been golfing together for over 40 years. Here they are meeting at Doreen Langdon’s for coffee after burning up the VB golf course on August 7. From l to r, Donna Thain, Sue Ackland, Sharon Torgerson, Patty Johnson, Kelly Torgerson, Joan Marshall, Kathy McKibbin, Fran Pollard, Doreen Langdon. What a party! Four generations of great friends and relatives gathered on August 5th to celebrate the upcoming marriage of two ‘beach kids’, Kristen Skelly and Jamie Thomas. The chic and gracious outdoor cocktail party was hosted by lifelong neighbours and best friends, the Tooley Family, with strong supporting roles from many Quintons, Patersons, Lloyds, Chipmans, Millicans, Grovers and Thomases. The many happy guests enjoyed beautiful platters of appies, oysters shucked fresh before your eyes and chilled champagne for the loving toast. There was even an unbelievable platter laden with dream cookies monogrammed in blue with either K or J . Pelicans drifted overhead through a perfect day of weather, while two kite sailors played in the surf below. Many thanks for the skill and effort in the creation of this wonderful event, and much love and good luck to Kristen and Jamie.

A big shout-out to Tam Scott, VB’s dedicated public works person who grows the flowers we see around the Beach, nurtures them all summer long, and gives us the beautiful displays of colour we enjoy all season long around the community.

Congratulations to the Manitoba Men’s Canada Summer Games baseball team, including our grandson, Jordan Peck, playing center field, who won a silver medal on August 4th. A sold-out crowd at Shaw Park cheered on the home team in an exciting game. Way to go Manitoba! Garry and Diane Peck

Children “caught” by the VB Police wearing their helmets while cycling The Victoria Beach Police Helmet Wearing incentive program has come to a close for another season. Over the summer members of the Victoria Beach Police have been issuing Ice Cream certificates to children they have observed operating their Bicycles in a safe manner and wearing their Helmets. Under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act all cyclists under the age of 18 MUST wear an approved Helmet at all times while operating a Bicycle, a passenger on a Bicycle or riding in a pull behind Chariot. The following 27 children were “CAUGHT” by the Police wearing their helmets and all received a free Ice Cream from our friends at “Le Gouter” Restaurant. RMVB Garbage Pickup Summer Schedule

Door-to-door pickup is as follows: MONDAY - Albert Beach, all areas south of Arthur Road and west of Ateah Road, including Ateah Road TUESDAY - All avenues in Restricted Area north of Arthur Road including Sunset Boulevard WEDNESDAY - Municipal garbage enclosures in all areas. Garbage is to be placed in garbage bags and left in containers (preferably bear-resistant ones). Containers are to be placed in the front yard - not on the road allowance - by no later than 8:30 am.

PICK-UP IS FOR HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE ONLY.

TRAVERSE BAY LANDFILL: PTH#11 - 3 miles east of PTH#11 & #59 intersection. Summer Hours OPEN DAILY - 9 am to 5 pm. A pass is required, they can be picked up at the gate, public works, or the municipal office.

The Victoria Beach Police would like to thank Lise & Gerry Bourassa, owners of Le Gouter Restaurant and Saffie’s Store for their generous contribution to our Incentive Program. We couldn’t have done it without them. We would also like to thank Jeff, Heather & James at Alter Ego Sports for their kind donation and continued support of all things cycling at Victoria Beach. Plans are in the works for a bigger and better Incentive program in 2018. The “8 at the Gate” cycling club has already pledged a significant donation to purchase even more Ice Cream certificates, so with Le Gouter’s continued support we should be able to give away a whack of Ice Cream next summer. Members of the Victoria Beach Police will also be contributing funds to this Incentive next year. It saddens us to see many Children riding their Bikes at Victoria Beach and still NOT wearing a Helmet. Crashes can happen anytime and head injuries are very dangerous. Trust me, as I know from experience and my hospital stay last fall. Helmet wearing has been law for three years now. The only other option to gain compliance is Police enforcement! The fine is $63.10. Don’t get caught by the Police NOT wearing your Helmet! Parents you will be responsible for the fine and after a 3 year grace period it may be time to start enforcing this particular law in 2018. Wearing a helmet while cycling should be as natural to you as buckling up your seat belt when getting in a vehicle. Protect your Children from serious injury. Please get them a Bicycle Helmet and make them wear it! Submitted by – Sergeant Clyde Raven Victoria Beach Police – Bicycle Patrol Unit

The VB Swim Program

Another great season of swimming lessons is wrapped up at Victoria Beach! About 225 young people participated in swimming lessons, Bronze classes, the Fit and Fun class and the Babysitting Course. The program was managed this year by an exceptional group of instructors – our head instructor Cameron Russell and swim teachers Tess Poulton, Kayleigh Russell, Mariel Roehr, Katie Bloom and Sasha Shewchuk-Taylor. Plus we had some incredibly dedicated volunteers over the summer – Duncan and Dana. A big huge thank you to our teachers who braved rain, cold, waves and heat to teach our kids to swim and to be excellent role models at the swim beach/ dock and around our community. We all got together for lunch the other day and it was wonderful to hear these young people talk about their experiences as instructors – what they had learned and enjoyed and their excitement for the program and the progress individual swimmers have made. This summer we had 14 kids commit to the 6-week Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross. They took their exam at the Swim Dock to achieve their Bronze rank and their First Aid Certification. The First Aid certification was recently added and is a very good addition to a young person’s resume – First Aid training is required for many non-swim jobs including Rec Assistant positions here at VB. The Fit and Fun class was offered again this summer for teens who had finished their Red Cross levels but who were not old enough or not available to do the summer-long Bronze courses. These were particularly fun classes and the teachers led the kids in lap swimming, water polo, diving contests off the pier and other fun contests. We will definitely be running this course again next summer!

The Babysitting course was really well attended by VB’s newest crop of babysitters. In addition to all the regular course curriculum, teacher Katie added lake safety and discussed scenarios babysitters are bound to encounter at the beach. Alice Russell and I worked together again this summer to convene the Swim Program. Alice, who has lots of experience managing competitive swim races, coordinated the 200 Metre and 800 Metre Open Swims. Big thanks to Alice and her crew of timers and helpers for making these events a big success. So another successful summer of swimming comes to an end and we’ll look forward to meeting you all again next summer at Registration! Alice Russell and Tamara Roehr

VB Yacht Club

On Sunday, August 6, friends and family across generation danced the night away at the VB Community Center and, in the process, supported the Victoria Beach Yacht Club, Junior Sailing and the Victoria Beach Community Club. Thanks to all for coming out! Thanks also to the Brock Street Bandits and the Sunset Soundsystem for playing all the summertime hits – next year, turn it up! The Spirit of this event is a reflection of the VBYC’s dedicated members, who turn out each year to set it up, run it, and then clean it all up again. Thanks to you all for your time and energy. See you next year! Chames Thomas

Please arrive Mondays at the clubhouse by 6:20 to play duplicate bridge. Cost to play is $1.00 and cold drinks are also sold for $1.00. Further to the Amazing Race

I was one of the lucky parent-volunteers for the 2nd annual Victoria Beach Amazing Race and I couldn’t agree with Sergeant Ryan more when he said that it was, “...a first class event by and for young people.” To see the fifty-plus kids sweating it out, riding, running, climbing, counting and collaborating their way through 4 hours of challenges - just for FUN - was to see VB kids at their best. A huge shout out to Andrew Kaul, who masterminded the entire event. Not only did he create the teams and plan each stage in detail, he put together the volunteer team, worked with the police and built in safety measures - right down to the “cooling off ” stations (i.e. sprinklers). How’s that for teen initiative? Here are some photos of the Amazing Day. Nancy Sarchuk

The weather cooperated for our 2017 Raffle Extravaganza and what a wonderful one it was! We surpassed our expectations and raised more funds than the previous year. The approximate proceeds to the VB Club was $6,200.00! Our sincere thank you to all of those who helped prior to and on the day of the event, to local businesses, artisans and cottagers for their gift donations and to those who gave monetary donations. Every little bit counted and we were grateful of the support. Our team has officially retired and looks forward to passing on many helpful hints to the next set of convenors! It is a rewarding experience and an opportunity to connect with our community. Sincerely, Angela Roehm, Tracey Popel, Yvette-MatousekWilson & Lori Edwards

Walk for Water With visions of blue/green algae dancing in their heads, over 200 lake lovers from Victoria Beach and surrounding areas, took to the avenues and paths of Victoria Beach, on August 13 and Walked for Water, in support of a healthy lake and the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF). With pledges from their families and friends, people of all ages, several babies and 16 dogs, met at the VB Clubhouse and set forth on a 2.5 Km walk to express their passion for “My Lake – Lake Winnipeg.” The LWF works to address the root causes of harmful algae blooms through research, public education, stewardship and collaboration. As an environmental non-governmental organization (ENGO), it relies on membership fees, grants, donations and proceeds raised through the annual Lake - A -Thon campaign and signature events. Walk for Water is the largest grassroots fundraising event held in support of a healthy lake. This year, VB’s Walk for Water raised over $21,000 (best ever!) to provide assistance for education and research projects which help restore and sustain the lake for the benefit of future generations. A big thank you goes out to all the walkers making the trek and to all donors who pledged support and helped to set a new record.

Your advocacy sends a strong message that we at Victoria Beach value and love our lake and want to join forces to make our lake healthy once again. This event is only possible with assistance of a cadre of volunteers, supporters and sponsors. Thanks to: The organizing committee; Deanne McDonald, Sheila Grover, Janet Sampson, Brenda Hearson, Kathryn Dompierre, Karin Boyd, Susan and Matt Hall and Sandy McCaig. A special thanks to; Bob and Kathy McInnes, Joan Dawson, Cliff Fox, Linda Dart, Susan Flanders, Duncan McCaig, Betty Lodewyks and Debbie Capar on registration; Gail Henderson, Lisa Yagi, Barb Degan and Mary Stapleton at the T-shirt table; Linda Fox and Linda Kliewer at the draw table and Erin Keating assisting with the Children’s draw; Kathleen Grover on sales; Janet Sampson at the door; Sheila Grover, Matt and Susan Hall on music with support from the Rec. and Deanne McDonald, organized a beach lantern craft, on the theme of Lake Winnipeg, during which, the kids created lanterns, which were proudly displayed at the Walk. Way to go kids – our most enthusiastic ambassadors for a healthy lake! Thanks also to the LWF staff; Marlo Campbell (Communications Director), Carolyn Townend (Summer Outreach Coordinator) and Alexis Kanu (Executive Director), who provided ongoing office support. A big hand goes out to the VB Reeve, Brian Hodgson who officially kicked off the event and Greg Thomas, our amiable MC and strong Walk for Water and LWF supporter. Several businesses, individuals and families supported our Walk through their generous donations to the LWF. Thanks to the following businesses: Lakeside Surveillance (Sandra and

Block Party

Great day for volleyball! We had a good turnout of 8 teams on the recreational side. There were two round robins. On one side Team Tess edged out the Net Ninjas to get to the semi’s. On the other side the Block Party stormed through without dropping a match, Team Tess took on the Block party in the final with Block Party winning in straight sets. It was a great match. Congratulations all players, it was fun to watch. On the Competitive side there was a Round Robin with the two Sandy Bay teams coming out on top. Spikelops had beaten the Hawks in the Round Robin but the Hawks came back in the final in three tight sets. Sandy Bay Hawks get the five peat. Great match! Dig Circus and Bloody knees battled for third and fourth. It was a tight 3 sets as well, but the Bloody Knees came out on top.

Victoria Beach’s Walk for Water is just one of several LakeA-Thon fundraisers happening throughout the summer in the East Beaches. Several Manitobans have supported the LWF by organizing their own events. Saffies General Store in partnership with LWF opened The Beach Exchange on Saffie Road, with information, activities and events designed to learn more about the lake. Saffie’s annual ‘Beats on the Beach’ (pie auction and local live music) was held on August 12. Robin Jewers sold her unique VB cards throughout the summer. Kelly McCaig sold Canadian flags on Canada day. Even the younger generation got into the act; Alexis and Colby Bru, Piper Hughes, Jessica and Declan Preston and Paige Edwards set up a lemonade stand and jewellery sale at the Village Green, raising $140.00; Isabella, Georgia and Carolyn Stewart had a lemonade and cookie cart and the Grover grandchildren, Misha and Erin, sold freezies. Thanks for all your innovative ideas and being part of the solution through the giving of time, skills, donations and promotions. Together, we can make the changes required for a clean, healthy Lake Winnipeg and surrounding watershed. Thanks to everyone for making this year’s Lake-A-Thon events so successful. See you next year on the starting line to ‘ Save the Lake.’

The Youth Soccer tournament was a big hit this year with several teams in two age classes all vying for Soccer supremacy at VB. In the younger division the two final teams were crowned as co-champions after playing over ten “overtime” periods without a goal. The weather was great, the soccer was even better and everyone had a great time.

2018 VB Police Pedaling for Wishes Century Ride

Attention all Road Bike Cyclists. Plans for our 8th Bi-Annual event next summer are well under way. We are shaking up our popular ride by making some significant changes. Our Bi-annual ride raises funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation. Our goal each event is to raise enough money to provide at least two Wishes.

Council Corner

This summer Council implemented two experiments. Firstly, ratepayers were allowed to pay their taxes at the Information Office. 50 people took advantage of this added service. Second, Council rented two mobility devices (Scooters) and made them available for rental from the Information Office. We hoped to make movements easier. This initiative proved extremely popular. This community is unique. While statics show that in most places 3% of the people do over 90% of the volunteer work, here we have far more people involved. Council would like to thank all those people who step forward and work for the betterment of our community. For close to 100 years the Victoria Beach Club has provided swimming lessons, arts and crafts, sports, and special events for children and teens; tennis for all ages and published the Herald. There are also all the volunteers who help at the Yacht Club, the Victoria Beach Community Centre, the East Beaches Senior Scene and Resource Centre, and the churches on Pine and Saffie Roads. Many people offer their time and expertise on the Accessibility Committee, the Shoreline Advisory Committee, and Medical Committee. Each area also has a cottage owners’ association that forward concerns from their area to council and work collectively to clean up their piece of the beach. What would our community be without you all. A special Thank you to Lynne Kimmelman, (while acting CAO), and Brad Patzer, our Fire Chief, and EMO Coordinator, for collecting the $170,000 owed to the municipality since 2014 for diking. Board of Revision – If you wish to question the tax assessment of your property, you must notify the office at (204) 774-4263 before September 25. The Board will meet on October 11. Election – The next municipal election will be held in July 2018. Now is the time to think about either running for Council or encouraging your neighbour to run. Consider serving your community. The next Council meeting is September 5, at the Seniors’ Scene 3 Ateah Road at 7:00 p.m. See you there. Reeve and Council

First off we plan on providing our participants with a greater challenge. A true “Century” ride of 100 miles (161 kms). The distance is only about 31 Kms longer than our usual ride but the Century distance is the marathon distance for cyclists. If you are looking to add a “Century” ride to your list of accomplishments please consider our event for next year. We ride as a group and finish as a group. Our event is NOT a race! Another significant change would be our route. We are hoping to do the 100 miles over a looped course that would have us start and finish at the South Beach Casino. Negotiations are currently under way with South Beach to have them sponsor and host our event. A tentative date for next year’s ride would be Thursday August 16th 2018. We are hoping South Beach will host our celebration dinner and provide room options at a special rate for riders (and family members) wishing to stay at the hotel the night before or after the event. Their facilities would allow us to still have our post ride pool party etc. If you are a returning participant or interested in riding with us please keep this date in mind. If you know someone who might be interested in this event please let them know. Next year’s event will be capped at 40 riders so please enter early to avoid disappointment. Watch for further information in next year’s Eastern Beaches Guide and early issues of the V.B. Herald. For further details please contact me on the Victoria Beach Police line or via e-mail at: info@ravenscustomkeepsakes.com Sergeant Clyde Raven – Victoria Beach Police Bicycle Patrol Unit

Wednesday Bridge

When Warren Buffet was asked what he liked most about bridge, the Oracle of Omaha replied that he enjoys the game for the intellectual stimulation. “It’s neither relaxing nor tension filled … just a good mind exercise. In this game you will never see the same hand twice, you can play a hand every seven minutes every day for the rest of your life, and you will never see the same hand...you will see a different intellectual challenge, it’s the best exercise for the brain.” His brain has been stimulated to the tune of billions of dollars! Join us Wednesdays at 1:15 pm and STIMULATE your mind! Winners were: 1. Linda McMillan 3510 2. Judy Hodgson 3100 3. VB Novelty Tennis Tournament 2017 - August 19th and 20th As we begin to wind down the tennis season at our beloved VB. courts, we would like to remind everyone that the Novelty Tennis Tournament will be held on the weekend of August 19th and 20th. FUNALICIOUS MUCH! Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Please be advised that all players must be members of the Victoria Beach Club and have their own shoe tag. We look forward to an excellent weekend of great tennis, many laughs and camaraderie. Please note that this tournament is a two day event. Please consult your social calendars and ensure that you are available for both days. Dropping out at the last minute makes it difficult and cumbersome for the conveners. That being said, please also let us know via the sign up sheets if you can only play either the Saturday OR Sunday and we will contact you in the event of a last minute dropout due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. Here are a few important notes for your information. • Sign up sheets will be posted at the tennis courts on Friday, August 11th at noon. • Sheets will be taken down at 5pm on Thursday, August 17th (or when the first 48 players have signed up). Please sign up early to avoid disappointment. The draw filled up very quickly last year. • Entry fee is $5.00 Please play before you play. We will hunt you down otherwise. • The Match committee will make up teams of 4 players. (Groups are highly encouraged to come up with a team name). Prizes will be awarded for originality. • Each entrant will play a total of 4 sets. Tennis Wrap-up

23

Well, another fabulous summer of tennis has come and gone. The Novelty Tournament is about to begin this weekend, at it will mark the official end of tennis programming at our beloved Victoria Beach courts. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to convene the courts this summer. As you know, the numerous volunteers are what makes Victoria Beach the incredible place we all love. This year, we were very fortunate to have a group of hard working volunteers who helped keep things running smoothly over the last seven weeks. Thanks to Margaret Meulendyk, & Jane and Bill Turk, for their hard work running this year’s Masters Tennis Tournament. As well, thanks to Andrea O’Connor, Brad Nechwediuk, Derek & Lisa Zeilstra and Philippe Champagne for the ongoing commitment in running the Junior Tennis Tournament. Also, thanks to the intrepid duo of John Heppenstall and Allan Morrish for their work in putting together a fantastic Senior Open Tournament over the August long weekend. Finally, thanks to Elly Black and Brenda Vielhaber for their dedication in making the Novelty Tournament a great way to end our summer season. Special thanks to Mike Lesiuk for picking up or order of highly sought after glasses and transporting them from the U.S. border. Our tennis family relies on these people and others to make it such a special place. Many thanks to all who helped out removing wasps nests (Ernie and Tam), running the clipboard and tournaments and keeping the matches running smoothly. Your efforts are all greatly appreciated! We would also like to take time to thank our tennis staff who worked very hard all summer handling the kiosk, planning and executing lessons and GVS and for their overall dedication and effort into making our courts such a great place to be. This year’s crew included Josh Taillon, Sami Hester, Jared Siragusa, Sam Drybrough, Sasha Taylor and Ben Kilbrei, along with assistant tennis-head Alex Kirbyson. Last, but certainly not least, we would like to extend a special thank you to our Head Tennis Attendant, Jenna Cech-Manek, for her contagious spirit and exuberance. Her energy in lessons, and GVS and her all around genuine care for others has been truly inspiring to witness. Both of us relied on her experience and we thank you, Jenna for taking care of all the behind the scenes activities. We are sure to have missed some people along the way, but rest assured, your time and commitment to our tennis membership is greatly appreciated. See you next year, folks. Stino Siragusa and Rex Neuendorff

Art Thursday

Thursday afternoons this year were a little busier in the Victoria Beach Clubhouse! Dozens of people crowded around tables to be creative and learn new skills at Art Thursdays. It started off with a bang as attendance was over fifty for the first week and climbed steadily to over seventy people each week. The instructors were delighted with both the turnout and the enthusiasm of the attendees who were represented by all ages and levels of skill. As the season winds down I would like to thank the program leaders who made Art Thursdays special for seven weeks of programming: Nancy-Lou Ateah Laura Epps Hilland Sophie Saboureau Leanne Purdy Peggy Lawler

Roxie Ateah Melissa Julia Wilson Steven Boyd Julia Beazley

I look forward to presenting this series of programs next season where VB’s creative souls can come and discover their inner artist! If you would like to teach a program next year you are more than welcome. Looking for donations of crafting materials for Art Thursday! Any extra art supplies. Just send me an email to artthrsdays@shaw.ca. Barbara Pritchard

A message from your VB Librarians It’s been another one for the books! Summer at V.B. is wrapping up once again which means Avery and I have a final request for those who have used the library’s services this year and in summers past. While you are folding your tie-dye shirts for the season and unplugging all of the fans in your cottage, please take a minute to see if you have any library books hiding on your shelves. The library is officially closing on Sunday, August 20th, but we will be accepting books through the slot in the door during the off season. This year, the library tried a new summer contest. We sent young and old alike out in search of the total number of cat stickers around the library. It was 16, in case you were wondering. The prize was five-cent candies and the competition was steep. Our goal was to encourage exploration of every corner and every genre in the library. Congratulations to the winner, Eloise Lamont. Eloise guessed on the second-last day of the competition and was one of our youngest participants. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our loyal, fun, and hardworking regular volunteers Izzy, Zinnia, Alex, Kiera, and Eric. Thanks also to the ten or so committed young people who have spent their Friday afternoons discussing good stories, eating tasty snacks, and learning about leadership at our weekly book club. It has been a blast and half working as your librarians this year. The best part of summer coming to a close is knowing that in ten short months we will all be back. From our shelves to your shelves (literally!), Hundreds of sandy books stamped by Rachel Beazley and Avery Edwards
