Policeman’s Corner Meet the new guy: Constable Ken POOLE was successful in getting hired by Edmonton Police and left our employ at the end of June. We were fortunate to be able to hire Gary CLARKE who is a retired Winnipeg Police member and is building a permanent residence in Bel-Air. Hopefully, Gary will return for a few summers more. Welcome Gary and Christine. Aug. 9th at Idle Thyme. On Aug 9 th if you go to the Idle Thyme Restaurant at Traverse Bay Corner all of the tips will be given to the Children’s Wish for the VB Police bicycle ride to Winnipeg on Aug 20th. The funds raised will be used to build a water park in the Wish Child ‘s neighbourhood as per her wish. Aren’t kids great? They can teach us a lot about not being selfish.

Vilis Ansons Memorial Trophy

The recipient of the Vilis Ansons Memorial Trophy for 2014 is Boris Bachynski. In order to truly understand and appreciate Boris, we need to start at the beginning. You might wonder how Boris became tennis convenor in 2003? In 2002, our Victoria Beach tennis committee consisting of George Gilmour, Doug Hancock and myself needed to find a new tennis convenor as my 3-year term as convenor was ending. George and Doug were previous Victoria Beach tennis convenors, highly respected leaders in our tennis community and previous winners of the Vilis Ansons Memorial trophy. Our committee met and established criteria that the successful candidate for tennis convenor must meet. Some of the qualifications included experience, communication, motivation and the love of tennis. Our search ended in the consensus that Boris Bachynski was at the top of our list. Thankfully, Boris accepted the position of Victoria Beach tennis convenor. Over his three-year term, Boris had many accomplishments. His forte was having a vision of transforming our Victoria Beach tennis courts into a beautiful, well maintained and professional looking tennis club. Boris called this “beautification”. You only have to look around to see the many improvements that Boris made – the water fountain, freshly painted seating areas with roofs, plant barrels with beautiful flowers in bloom, the new tennis signage, and the major resurfacing of courts 3, 4 & 5 in 2005. Boris also ensured that all of the tennis equipment (nets, rollers, brushes) were in top condition. Boris designed and built the hanging, locking boards that cover the draw sheet boards that we use for all of our tennis tournaments. When Boris had a goal; neither hell nor high water was going to stop him. He worked tirelessly to achieve his goals. He also led by example – how many times did we see Boris with a paint can and brush painting the bleachers or with a hammer and nails replacing rotten floor boards, shingling the roof over our bleachers, planting flowers, or cutting down a tree adjacent to our tennis courts that was going to fall, damaging our fence. These were just some of the examples of the ongoing work that Boris took on. I was honoured to present Boris with the Vilis Ansons Memorial Trophy. Congratulations Boris! Ken Capelle

Get Ready for the Novelty Tennis Tournament!

August 16th and 17th

Well, it’s that time of year again! As we begin to wind down the tennis season at our beloved V.B. courts, I would like to remind everyone that this year’s Novelty Tennis Tournament will be held on August 16th and 17th. The emphasis of this tournament has always been FUN!

Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Please be advised that all entrants to the tournament must be Victoria Beach Club members and have their own shoe tag number. I look forward to an incredible weekend of great tennis, laughs and camaraderie! The Novelty’s

format is an entertaining finale to another spectacular summer at VB. Mark your calendars for August 16th and 17th. See you at the courts, Stino Siragusa 204-996-0121

Be Cool! Be Green! Walk for Water on Sunday, August 10th ! There’s still time to grab a pledge form at one of VB’s key locations (store, Moonlight, bakery, library, info hut at the gate, etc., as well at Saffie’s in Albert Beach) and take part. Remember, this annual event is held in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) and a cleaner Lake Winnipeg! You can walk alone, partner-up, tripleup -- whatever! Don’t worry about

having to bring in a large amount of $; every little bit counts! Seriously! Things will get underway at the VB clubhouse. Registration begins at 9:15 and the Walk begins at 10. There are 2 routes: 5 km and 2.5 km. (And, as an additional incentive, there will be a draw for prizes for the participants at the end!) If you’re not a walker, you can still support this event by being a pledger

Victoria Beach HERALD

Where did it go? It is hard to believe that six weeks of tennis programming at VB is almost over for another year. For all the tennis players out there who have been bit by the tennis bug, either new or not so new, this article is for you. You know who you are. You are the ones who would rather be playing tennis than almost anything else in the world. You are the ones whose life has been truly altered by the game. For you, the VB tennis courts are a huge reason you are here. This article is a slightly updated reprint from last year. Although our tennis time at VB is coming to an end, it is our hope that this may help to keep the spark alive until our next season together. It has been a great tennis season with all those screaming forehand winners, those crisp unreturnable volleys, and service aces that made your chest and head swell. Those are the shots that keep us coming back for more, that one in a hundred shots, that exquisite point where the ball and racquet collide at the perfect spot in space, where they make perfect contact and the ball flies effortlessly to where it is intended. All you need to hit is one and you are hooked for life. All you need to do is hit one and you desperately want to hit another. It is that perfect effortless hit that makes us run around the court like crazy people trying to kill that yellow ball. However, for every one of those perfect shots, there are hundreds of shots that are not even close. There are hundreds of shots that frustrate us, depress us, make us feel inadequate, cause some to swear, stamp their feet, and even break racquets. The solution… get better. To get better we take lessons, practice, and play as much as we can. But now there is one more resource that we can access, the internet. Tennis sites on the internet are plentiful. These sites are usually built by entrepreneurial tennis coaches who are trying to expand their audience. Instead of giving a tennis lesson to a small group, they give a tennis lesson to the World Wide Web. These sites are very sophisticated with complete courses offered on anything you can think of related

to tennis, strokes, strategies, exercises, footwork etc. All have extensive video libraries of the top pros performing in super slow motion, usually with commentary. These sites are trying to convince you to buy their courses or video collections to improve your game. A forehand course will take students through the stroke, step by step, with practice drills. Some even offer free video analysis if you send in video of yourself. You don’t have to buy the courses to benefit from these sites as most have free resources that demonstrate the basic tennis strokes. To access these free resources or video libraries you are asked to subscribe by giving your email address. Once a subscriber, you then have access to their free material, which in some instances can be huge. They will also send free tips, lessons, videos and snippets of their programs to entice you to purchase their latest courses. Some of the more popular tennis sites are FuzzyYellowBalls. com, founded by Will Hamilton. By subscribing to this site you get access to an extensive free basic strokes collection. Hamilton has studied all the top players and has assembled the common elements of each player’s strokes. By copying these elements you can have a perfect stroke, be it a forehand, backhand etc. Now in the middle of a winter night you can see Federer’s forehand in slow motion and practice it yourself in the privacy of your own basement. I have broken many a light bulb and lamp mimicking that exact forehand. Of all the sites I am familiar with, fuzzyyellowballs.com has the best basic strokes collection and the best thing is … it’s free. Tennis One (tennisone.com) is a very large and popular tennis site. Hosted by Jim McLennan, Doug King, and others, this site has free resources, but it is hard to navigate. Introduced in 1996, it is showing its age. Doug King’s approach to tennis is unique, almost Zen-like, but worth a look. Onlinetennisinstruction.com is an up and coming tennis site. Hosted by Florian Meier, a high ranking German and US coach, this site has some free resources, but the main benefit of subscribing is the free tips sent to your inbox. Florian’s videos are well orchestrated with side by side examples of proper and improper stroke technique. These are but a few of the many tennis sites out there. Google or YouTube the area you are interested in and you will have plenty of options to choose from. I think seeing the stroke performed properly and then broken down to manageable pieces is an aid to any struggling tennis player with the desire to improve. So in the middle of winter, when the tennis courts are but a distant memory, log onto one of these sites, practice your perfect swing and put a few dents in the ceiling. Imagine that perfect contact, and be excited about tennis all over again. By the way, if you enter a site that has a lot of pictures of Anna Kornikova in skimpy tennis outfits, you are on the wrong site. See you at the courts! Bryan and Lisa Thank you to: Alex Lesuik, Mathew Heiman, and Geoff Kirbyson for volunteering their time to instruct Adult Tennis Drills this past Friday. Dwayne Lucht for installing the new net and posts on court 5. The Lesuiks for donating three boxes of practice balls to the VB tennis program Upcoming Events All programming will continue until August 15. Starting on Sunday August 10, the court attendants will be on duty from 8 am till noon. Please use the ball rack and chalk board for court rotation when the court attendants are not on duty. The Novelty Tennis Tournament takes place on August 16 and 17. Sign up early!

THE ANNUAL VICTORIA BEACH SAND CASTLE CONTEST – 2014 EDITION Well, another successful year for the annual Victoria Beach sand castle contest! This year, we had well over 200 people participating or cheering on our sculptors! It was a beautiful day, and the weather cooperated providing much fun and entertainment! The beautiful and imaginative creations were in seven categories this year, creating angst for the judges who attempted to score based on the design and engineering of the creations! In the “8 years and under” category, where children under age 8 sculpted beautiful creations with no help from adults or siblings older than 8 saw “ Octo the Octopus” winning for the Best Skill at sand shaping, created by Maggie Sirrell. Kaehla and Emma Johnson and Bella Kraus created “Princess Castle”, and winning the prize for Best Luxury Real Estate! Branson Miller created “Branson’s Fun Land” which won a prize for the Best Wet day at the beach! Alexis Marchand won Best Stone and Sand Construction, with a “social Pyramid” and Will and Jamie Ahrens created “Castle City” winning the prize for Best City Planning. In the “12 and under” category (also no help by anyone over age 12), four prizes were awarded: Best Blend of Old and New was won by Travis and Easton Hyra and Aaron Pattison, who created “Modern Medieval Castle”. Best attention to Detail was won by Olivia and Lucy Fast, Kate, and Maryse Champagne in their creation of “summer cruising motor boat”. Jackson Sirrell and Benji Hoole’s creation of “The Hole” won the prize for Closest to China! And last but certainly not least: Jack Clement, Ryland Nechwediuk and Xavier Champagne won for Most Impregnable Fortress with their “Castle of Fortune”! In the “Traditional Sand Castle” category, always a favorite, we had many entries and a hard decision for the judges. The creators winning first place were: Riley Hughes, Jillian and Erin Doiron with their creation: “Labella”. Second place went to Lori, Greg, Avery and Blake Edwards for their rendition of a “Mayan Temple”, and third to “Dragon’s Castle” by the Chaytor Family (Ilsa, Richard, Walter, Charles, Mike and Wendy). Other excellent creations were “Hogwarts” by the Surcon Family (Annabella, Bennett, Garett and Jennifer) and “Destroyed Castle” by Stephen,

Scot and Ken Mitchell. In the “Animals and Creatures” category, we had fabulous entries from the following gifted scultors: Anika Farrell, Sarah, Rachel, James and Catherine Watson, Sage and Emery Stapleton, Sam Marchand, Piper Hughes, Laura & Sarah Stelmack, Olivia and Rayna Schuster; Sandy Wang, Brenda, Sallie and George Friesen; Tess Poulton, emma den Haan; Alexis, Jenny, Mike & Colby Bru, and Julia Beazley. In the “Most Decorated” category, we had three fabulous entries, with first place going to Troy and Shane Martin for their rendition of “The VB Pier”. A second place tie was between Lauren Zacharias, Meagen Thornton and Fiona O’Byrne who created “the Sacred Tree” and Andrew Zacharias who created “thingy Cabob”! All very creative structures! The Superstructures was, as usual, very difficult to judge. It was a close race, but first place went to Gabrielle & Sophie Guindon, Joseph & Kai Anderson and Jenica, Emily & Madison Kelly for their creation of “Spitz!” A close second went to Amy & Paige Edwards, Josh & Kai Peacock, Ines Bedard and Cara Brown who created “The Giant’s Foot and the Sea Monster”! Last, but not least, was the “Anything Goes” category, we had a record 10 entries!! This was very hard to judge, but first place went to the creation titled “Moonlight Inn Pizza” by Georgia, Chloe Wilson, Brooke Oxenforth and Caitlyn Willison. Second Place went to “Olaf at VB” and Third Prize went to the creation of “Babies in Rocketships”. Entrants in this category were: Mike and Kiefer Culliford, Wesley Nelson & Gavin McLennan, Jenna, Christine and Mya Oakley, Hanna Lee, Ryan and Alanna Kaser; Grace, Malcolm, Daryl & Christine Smith; Linnea Kosokowsky, Dana Poulton, Hilary, and Paige Robson, Annika Falkenberg, Jack Denttaan, Aidan Pattison, Abi Popel; Ella, Sadie, Tallulah & Sean Brown; Stella, Will and Isla McCaig, Sullivan Cushing; Jessica, Declan and Dave Preston, Jill Kirbyson, Trevor, Karissa & Declan Bowden, and Andrew Kaul, Riley Dyck, Zinnia Popoff, Megan O’Leary and Jack Filuk-Scott. 8 at the Gate

The 8 at the Gate riding group celebrated its tenth year of riding and fifth year of the Gran Fondo – Gran Colazione on Sunday Aug. 3. We completed the usual 45 km group ride to Lester Beach, winding up back at Marshall’s for pancakes, mimosas and fellowship. Thirty-four riders turned out with at least half a dozen of our “regular” riders missing for various reasons. A scorching pace was set by Daniel Russell*, Gord and Tom Mahwinney and Scott Stephanson, along with some imports from Grand Beach for the “l’Echappée” group. “le Péléton” maintained a fast pace as well (30 to 35 km/h), and “le Gruppetto” enjoyed the conversation and scenery that the other groups could not, due to lack of oxygen, sweat in eyes or HR monitor issues. We were especially honoured by the late arrival of Ella Russell* (*no relation but following in the fast wheels of) gold medal winner of the beach bike race medium course. Get here earlier next year and there might even be some pancakes left for you, Ella. We will continue to ride through the fall, meeting at 08:00, switching to later start times as the weather cools. A number of our riders will be participating in major events: VB Police Children’s Wish Ride, MS Biking to the Viking as well as Banff and Whistler Gran

Thank you from East Beaches Animal Services

It had been a busy month prior to our raffle, but all the hours were worth it as EBAS had a very successful auction fundraiser. Thank you to all those who faithfully come out every year and support us by purchasing tickets. Thank you also to the businesses and individuals who donate every year. Thanks to Lise and Jerry at Saffies’ Store and the RM of Victoria Beach for always generously allowing use of their space. Last, but not least a huge thank you to our small, but dedicated group of volunteers who give of their time every year to make this fundraiser possible allowing EBAS to continue helping the lost, abandoned and abused animals in the east beaches area. A list of winners and our great friends who donate to our auction will be posted in various locations throughout the community. Also visit us on Facebook for list of winners and info on any animals that are up for adoption. You can also call Sandra at 756-3117 or Carol at 756-8657.

Farewell to David Hurst David Hurst’s dad bought the property at 333 Sunset and built the log cottage on it in 1928-the year Dave was born. He has spent at least a part of every summer here since. On Saturday, July 26, 2014 his neighbours and closest friends bid him a fond farewell. Mike& Trudy Tritt, Mark & Melanie Tooley, Bill Pope (minus Elizabeth, who was whale-watching in Churchill) Don & Lynne Paterson, Bill & Mary Duff and Deb Covernton entertained Dave at Paterson’s next door. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful brunch by participating in preparing, donating, serving, and of course, eating at the table featuring an exquisite centerpiece grown by Bill and arranged by Mary Duff--they should go into the business!! Father Bill asked a blessing for David and said Grace. Mike proposed a funny and sentimental toast and presented Dave with a copy of “100 SUMMERS ON LAKE WINNIPEG” autographed with a special message by the authors Sheila Grover(also a former close neighbour) and Greg Thomas. Each of us had written a personal note in the book to say goodbye and remember us at VB. Some nostalgia, tall tales and reminiscences with and about Dave. Another toast, this time with special toasting beverage from

and by Bill Pope, followed by a round of “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow’. Melanie Tooley served her delicious “ Best Wishes Dave “ cake. Dave thanked his friends warmly .To top off the party, we commandeered a Chinese tourist (who was lost) to take the attached picture of us on Dave’s front deck. For the last time. We all hate to see him leave and will miss him dearly. Good wishes and good luck, David Hurst!

Trooper Rocks the Summer Winds Festival

Thousands of local beaches residents and Manitoba area fans came out “For a Good Time Not a Long Time” as headliners Trooper, and the Neil Youg’uns and Luciano electrified the newly expanded stage at the Victoria Beach Sports Field. While funds are still being tallied with this important fundraiser for the Victoria Beach Community Centre, everyone who bought a ticket, worked, and/or donated to the event are the true stars as they ensure the continued growth and success of this annual festival. Everyone had good time indeed, as no major incidents were reported over the two days featuring 11 acts and some Kodak moments including an autograph session with Trooper, as well as the return of the Neil Young’uns tribute band and Jamaican Reggae star Luciano who was backed by a stage packed with musicians and singers. Brandon’s Until Red took the stage for the first time along with local favourites The Buster McCoy Band, The Blackout City Kids, Rubber Soul, The Lucky Stones, and The Crooked Fifth who performed an upbeat unplugged session during a brief rain shower. Returning young stars Dylan and Jessie Thomas kicked off the festival. The Summer Winds Family Music Festival Committee extends a huge thank you to the dedicated army of volunteers, as well as nearly 50 Festival sponsors including partners Greenback Hunter and Fishing Guide Services of Victoria Beach, Manitoba Culture Heritage and Tourism, Edmond Financial, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, D.G. Cameron’s Leisure Liquidators, and the RMs of Victoria Beach and Alexander. For a full listing of sponsors, great Festival photos and more, go online at summerwindsfest.com. See you all next year!

Super Soccer Sunday, August 10th It is time for the annual V.B. Soccer Tournament taking place at the Sports Field on Sunday, August 10th. We will kick-off the day with the Kid’s Division (7 to 10 years) at 9:00 A.M., followed by the Youth Division (11 to 14 years) and finally the Open Division (15 years and up), starting at approximately 11:00. The goal for the day is fun and participation. Teams will consist of a keeper and five players on the field with a minimum of two members of the opposite gender on the field at all times. You may have as many substitutes on your team as you like. Individuals who do not have a team need not worry, just sign up (early) and we will find a team for you! It is important to note that bare feet or running shoes will be acceptable footwear for the day, absolutely NO cleats will be allowed! We encourage you to bring water and sunscreen. Please submit your team name, division category and roster no later than 6 P.M. on Saturday, August 9th (no exceptions!) You can call either Stino or Rex at the numbers listed below, or feel free to drop off your submission at 311 2nd Avenue. Are your playing days over but still love the game? Why not come down and volunteer to referee a game or two? We appreciate anyone interested in refereeing to come down to the Sports Field on Sunday to help out, or give Stino or Rex a call. If last year’s champions could return the trophies to the Sports Field on the day of the tournament that would be greatly appreciated! See you on the field!
