Victoria Beach HERALD

About the Victoria Beach Herald One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 91st year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. BOARD PAST PRESIDENT Anil Kaul PRESIDENT Suzy Hester 756-3016 VICE PRESIDENT Mike Clement (204) 894-3142 SECRETARY Wendy Derksen 756-6515 TREASURER Dave Wilson 756-2757 DIRECTOR AT LARGE Leslie Sarchuk 756-2690

During the past few weeks we have had several occasions where the winds were high, perfect weather for windsurfers and kite-boarders. On one occasion, the kite-boarders were putting on a great show at Alexandra and King Edward beaches. Unfortunately, on several occasions the riders came within the legally allowed area of 30 metres of the shoreline and landed in an area where swimmers were playing in the waves. In Manitoba motor boats, water skiers, wake boarders, jet-skis, windsurfers and kite surfers must not operate within 100 feet or 30 metres of swimmers and the shoreline. Speed restrictions for all types of watercraft apply. In the RM of Victoria Beach, we do not have posted speed limits, therefore, the rule for unposted speed limits apply. That limit is 10km/h (6 mph) within 30 metres (100 ft) from the shore. This limit everywhere in the RM. Please play safely. In the spring one entrance to the sand cliffs was

barred off and large signs posted to warn people of the dangers associated with the Sand Cliffs. We are still seeing cars parked along highway 504 on the north end of the municipality. This means that some people are continuing to ignore the Bylaw that prohibits climbing on the sand cliffs and dunes. Please think before you go. Playing on the dunes is environmentally insensitive; it leads to erosion. It is extremely dangerous; a child was almost killed two years back when he was buried in a sand avalanche. It is illegal. Please stop this destructive behavior. And, speak out when you hear others planning to break this By-law. Finally, if you have not yet stopped by the Information booth and picked up your free recycling bin for your cottage, please do so. Recycle Everywhere gave the municipality more than 1000 collapsible bins; one for every cottage in the RM. Come and get yours. RMVB Council

A few tidbits to report on this week (after a 2 week hiatus): • As always, the 30+ dance sold out (a week before the event!) and it was a fabulous night organized by Doug Pritchard. During the week leading up to the dance, I heard from lots of VBers who didn’t get tickets. It would be great if we had a clubhouse large enough to accommodate the number of people that want to come to these dances, but we do not. The liquor permit restricts us to 270 people. A word of advice - if you know you want to go to the dance, buy your ticket when they first go on sale next year rather than waiting! • The 30+ Tragically Hip concert viewing is selling well even though it’s still several weeks away (August 20th). I have been asked a few times what it’s all about. Here’s the scoop - doors and bar will open at 7:00, concert (which will be their last) will air live via satellite on the clubhouse movie screen starting at 7:30, a DJ (sorry, we couldn’t afford a band when we only charged $10!) will play from when the concert ends until 1:00 am, and snacks will be served. Tickets are on sale at 324 Third (text Suzy @ 204-292-0397 if you want to check if someone is around before going by) and 214 Seventh. • The Olympics are on August 5th-21st. We will be airing events at the Clubhouse during that timeframe when other events aren’t already

occurring at the clubhouse. Your membership (or $5 day pass) gets you in. The Olympics will be on at the Clubhouse during the following times: o Monday, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun noon-3:00 o Wednesday 6:00-9:00 The clubhouse is too busy on Tuesdays to be able to air the Olympics. Bring a few dollars and buy a drink, chips and/or popcorn. • We’re still looking for volunteers interested in being Director at Large or Secretary. The secretary is responsible for taking minutes, co-organizing the Volunteer Appreciation Event, organizing popcorn machine and supplies and various other duties. The Director at Large is responsible for co-organizing the Volunteer Appreciation Event, applying for and managing grants for VB Club employees, being the Board representative on the VB Clubhouse Restoration Committee as well as various other duties. If you would like more information on either of these positions, please let me or another member of the Board know. “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”- Author Unknown The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime, Suzy Hester

Get Out of the City and Explore Beach Cottages at the WAG’s 10th Annual Home Tour The Winnipeg Art Gallery is celebrating a decade of the Home Tour by taking the annual event to Victoria Beach on Sunday, August 7, 2016. The tour will feature some of the most interesting cottages and modern lake homes along the shoreline of the beautiful beach. Organized by the Associates of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, this fundraising event supports the WAG and its mission to help people see and experience more through art. The self-guided tour allows entry into eight cottages, accessible by foot or bike. Whether a summer getaway or an all-season residence, these retreats are inspired, including designs by some of Winnipeg’s most accomplished architects. The 2016 Home Tour highlights cottages built anywhere from 1917 to 2016. The oldest residence is one of the first buildings in Victoria Beach, located at 219 Sunset Blvd and known locally as “The Maclean Cottage. Designed by Paulson Construction, the classic handcrafted home features a steeply pitched roof and remarkable views. Another original cottage, built in 1925 at 313 First Ave, is a charming example of Tudor Revival style. 21 Bayview, designed by Cibinel Architecture and completed this year by Dyson Construction, is both the newest lake home and recommended starting point for the Home Tour. This chic and comfortable lakeside retreat combines cedar shingles on the exterior, fir interior woodwork, and a cast concrete stairway to the mezzanine. The 2016 Home Tour will take place at Victoria Beach, on Sunday, August 7, from 10am-4pm. The tour route, including estimated walking times, is provided in the guidebook and online at wag.ca/hometour. Tickets are $45, with proceeds supporting WAG programming. Space is limited, so reserve your spot at wag. ca/hometour or in person at the WAG, and Saffies General Store in Victoria Beach. The WAG is grateful to the Winnipeg Free Press for supporting the 2016 Home Tour.

Victoria Beach Police and The Moonlight Inn Team up to Reward “Helmet-Wearing” Cyclists Are you aware that under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act, Bicycle Helmets are now mandatory for every cyclist under the age of 18? It doesn’t matter if a cyclist is riding a bike, a passenger on a bike or riding in a pull behind chariot, everyone under 18 years must wear an approved Helmet at all times. The Highway Traffic Act governs all roads, including the roads in our Restricted Area. It also doesn’t matter if you are cycling to the Beach, the Moonlight Inn, the Playground, or the Bakery; you must be wearing a helmet. The fine for not wearing your helmet is $63.10. The cyclist can be fined as well as a parent for allowing their child to ride a bicycle without a helmet. To try and encourage Helmet wearing in Victoria Beach members of your Victoria Beach Police Bicycle Patrol Unit along with the Moonlight Inn have teamed up to provide a fun incentive. For the rest of the summer Bicycle Patrol Officers will be on the look out for children wearing Helmets and riding their Bicycles in a safe manner. Bicycle Police Officers may randomly reward a Helmet wearing child with a certificate for a FREE Ice Cream (Provided by our friends at the Moonlight Inn). Children are not to approach Bike Officers to show their helmets and ask for a certificate. They must be selected by an Officer to be eligible for the Free Ice Cream. At the end of the season all winners of the Free Ice Cream certificates will be entered into a grand prize draw to win a $50.00 gift certificate from our good friends at Alter Ego Sports located at 1605 Pembina Hwy. Phone: (204) 475-4908. Alter Ego Sports are also the main sponsors of the V.B.P. “Pedalling for Wishes” ride, which will take place on Wednesday August 24th. Members of the Victoria Beach Police service would like to gratefully acknowledge Joyce and her entire staff at the Moonlight Inn for their generosity regarding this Helmet incentive program. Their kindness and caring have made this summer program possible. We would also like to thank Jeff, James, Heather and all their great staff at Alter Ego Sports for their kind support as well. Victoria Beach: A Place Where Kids Can Be Seen AND Heard To me, one of the greatest things about Victoria Beach is that it has been built as a place for our youth to indulge, explore and grow. The avenues are free of cars, activities abound day and night – both athletic and creative -- and otherwise luxurious and out of reach opportunities like tennis courts and a golf course lie inexpensively in wait, to be accessed by all. It is the one and only place I know of where kids are to be both seen AND heard. How I wish it were like that everywhere else and how much better the world would be, if so. As many fellow VB’ers know, I am an abstract visual artist. On the Canada Day long weekend this year, I had the pleasure of exhibiting in the Kingston Art Fest, exhibiting my artwork there for the first time. A week later I would be heading to my beloved Victoria Beach, so it was already much on my mind as the countdown was on! One of the things I noticed at this three-day event was how many times a parents’ agenda did not include that of their kids. Parents not interested in art quickly pulled away their kids who had bolted into my booth, OUT of my booth, quickly followed by a terse “Come on, there’s lots of other things to see yet!”. You see, my artwork is bold and colourful and it is full of primary colours. So, it is a bit of a magnet for the younger ones. To compound the situation, I was placed by the kid’s activity area/playground so the young ones were quite plentiful in coming to me. But while the kids saw a visual playground inside with me my abstract artwork, many of the mom’s and dad’s didn’t have the time for me or my art. They wanted to answer their latest text message, or send an Instagram or snapchat picture or look at the purses, jams, clothes, soaps, jewelry, knick-knacks or hit the food area, music band stand or the beer tent. Except for seven-year-old Richard. And, for Richard’s parents. Early Saturday afternoon, young Richard confidently came into my booth and studied each painting inside. His parents stood silently by -- outside the tent -- and let him. As did I. Finally, I asked “what do you think?” Richard smiled. Then his dad gently whispered...”there was no way he was going to walk by these...” Needless to say the floodgates were opened and this astoundingly articulate little man with his strong British accent had lots to say! Richard and I talked about what we saw in each painting and his parents patiently and lovingly stood back for a good 15-20 minutes and let us. (They got involved too, but they clearly wanted this to be about me and him and the art.) Eventually his parents interjected that he painted too and then we looked at all the paintings he’d made at school and at home on their smart phone. Another ten minutes passed. Eventually the parents said it was time to move on as “Andrew has to talk to other people too”. I said not to worry, but they insisted. I then thanked them all for the time they gave, ME. Before going too far, the father quickly came back, shook my hand again and said “Thank you so much. We just moved here from England this week. My wife and I -- and Richard -- have no friends or family here. We don’t even have a home yet as we are trying to find

the right one to buy.” He pointed out that “in what was a very tough week for us all, this last half hour made them all feel very welcome and happy to have made the choice to come to Canada.” Yeah, I admit...I felt good -- choked up even -- as I watched them walk away on this, the Canada Day long weekend. The next morning, right at 10 a.m. as we all open our booths for the day, guess who shows up? Yes, Richard and his family. Richard eagerly thrusts a very cool piece of paper art/sculpture and says “look what I made!” Of course, I made it sound like it was the best thing I’d ever seen. But the truth is it was extremely well done and I didn’t have to pretend. His dad said that they were invited to a barbecue that night before, by a new work colleague, and that all Richard could do was tell everyone about me and my artwork. As well, that he needed to make something too. He said Richard spent part of that night and then got up early in the morning to finish it as he “JUST HAD TO SHOW ANDREW!” before I went back home to Toronto. We then spent more time talking and I said “Well, you now have a friend in Canada, Richard. Keep watching my website and see the new things I create, and now that your dad has my business card, you keep sending me what you make. Then, I will see you again in person, next summer.” He said it was a deal. I again shook all their hands and wished them an amazing summer. As they walked away I thought to myself that I had no doubt that young Richard will somehow make a mark on this world because of his parents’ generosity of their time and their ability to see him and explore what he sees. The point to sharing this story is that it is in moments like this that it really is so utterly, blatantly obvious how dramatic and meaningful an effect we can have when we take the time to acknowledge what a child wants. To SEE what a child is seeing. Then, to find it within ourselves to be attracted to what a child is attracted to and taking the time to indulge in it. With them. It’s not always all about our own busy world and our own busy personal work agenda’s or getting wrapped up in what we want and how the time is always ticking to do a bunch of “other” things. We have something special here at Victoria Beach that allows us a special opportunity to reconnect with our kids. Take the time to breathe, embrace and indulge with your kids whether you are a parent or an uncle or aunt, or a godparent or a close friend. Not only will it make you feel good, but I can assure you that the child that gets to experience life with you, in this way, will come out further ahead and they will have far more to offer the world, than those pulled away from it because there is so much YOU needed to do instead. Summer is here. Breathe it in, embrace it and slow down. Turn off your cellphone. Enjoy that getting the internet down here is a hassle. Use up every minute of all that precious extra time we have here to share with these wee ones, that we don’t otherwise get, for the other ten months of the year. The pay-off now and for the many years to come is certainly worth it. Here is to wishing everyone a wonderfully indulgent Canadian summer at Victoria Beach. A place that is built for the child and the child in us all. Take the time to look. Together. Andrew Stelmack

Victoria Beach HERALD

The Amazing Race, VB Style

Victoria Beach on a hot summer day is the perfect place to compete in an Amazing Race. Last week, four teams of kids ages eight to 13 swarmed the avenues on bikes on their ambitious quest. The race consisted of 13 challenges, submitted by parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Questions ranged from the easy (such as the price of minnows at the store) to the trickier (how many ladders are there on the tall pier- lots!). Each team had a ‘ghost’ assigned to them, an adult who was only there to look out for the kids’ safety. Halfway through the race, the teams met at the Sports Ground to compete in their choice of a three-legged race or wheelbarrow race. Then they were off again to find crow feathers, sing O Canada in French and English at the bandstand and answer skilltesting questions about VB. After tossing lawn darts, the kids raced down to the beach to swim and feast on hotdogs, chips and happy face cookies, followed by the presentation of a trophy to the two teams tied for first. Thanks to Maddie for creating the beautiful trophy. Special thanks also to John Grover who stood in for Olympian Jon Montgomery from the Canadian version of the popular show. He explained the challenges and the rules and kept everyone on task. Thanks John, you rock! Special thanks to Neiko, Great Dog of the North, who led us in a rousing good howl. Cousins from across Canada included Liam and Mischa, Piper and Riley, Jillian and Erin, Patrick and Calum and friends Maeve, Kaden and Maddie. It was great fun for all three generations, making memories at VB. See you at next year’s Amazing Race! The Grover Family

Eight at the Gate – Gran Fondo Gran Colazione

The day started out damp and breezy for the annual Gran Fondo Gran Colazione (Big Ride / Big Breakfast). The 35 riders at the start competed for the coveted six pack of Leffe beer for the men’s division and the bottle of Astoria Prosecco for the women’s points races. Daniel Russell took the hotly contested men’s with a clean sweep of the seven stages, while Twila Cuthbert and Sharla Mawhinney disputed the event for the women’s, with Twyla taking the final. There was some discussion over the location of start/finish lines for the women’s event and as swimming and running were not involved it took a while to decide who the eventual winners were. After the ride everyone gathered at Bob and Joan’s for blueberry pancakes and mimosas. Lots of great conversations and catching up took place. For those who are into numbers 192 +/- pancakes were devoured. Special thanks to all who participated, brought fruit, syrup and mimosas. Special thanks to Chris Archer who once again paced me up the Hillside Hill (yes Patrick – speed bump) and back to the group.

We continue to ride daily leaving the “gate at 08:00. For information contact Bob Marshall local 204 756-8255 cell 204 261-4292 or email at jmarsha@mymts.net. You can also find us on Facebook at “eightatthegate.

Ladies VB Golf Tournament Results What a great tournament and turnout! We had 117 golfers so we are pleased to beat the men’s tournament attendance of 48! The course was in the best shape ever thanks to Karl and his staff. We appreciated the support of the indoor staff, Ramona, Lissa, Barry and Ian for their help too with the registration etc. I think the best part of the day was hearing team-mates cheering when you landed in the trap! As Bruce Eyford said, he has never heard that before! However, that was one of our fun contests so it was a good thing to land in the trap to win a prize! The wind-up at the new Victoria Beach Community Centre was very enjoyable with lovely refreshments provided by the Merrymakers and the wine by Kathy and Laith Gagnon. It was great to have the opportunity to mix and mingle in such a comfortable setting. Thanks to all of you for making this so wonderful for us. Hear Ye, All Who Love Lake Winnipeg! VB’s Walk for Water Is THIS Sunday, August 7th!! Whether you’re a walker or a non-walker, there is still time to support this important event and the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF), an organization dedicated to finding ways to improve the health of our lake. Let’s band together and help get rid of that destructive algae! Walkers: Pledge forms were inserted into every copy of last week’s Herald (July 29th). Take a look; it might still be there. Pledge forms are also available at all of VB’s key locations plus the Senior Scene, Saffie’s, and online at lakewinnipegfoundation. org --- and please don’t worry about having to bring in a large amount of $; every single bit truly counts! (Note: (a) Participants who have to drive to VB will be allowed free parking on the morning of Aug. 7th. (b) Walkers are asked to bring along their own bottle of water.) Rain or shine, registration will begin at the VB Clubhouse at 9:15 AM, and the Walk will get underway at 10. Between 9:15 and 10, volunteer members of VB’s Walk for Water Team and members of the LWF staff will be present to chat with everyone, answer

The East Side Pickle Ball League The East Side Pickle Ball League got off to a slow start in May at the new V.B. Junior Tennis Tournament Results The 2016 edition of the VB Junior Tennis Tournament was a great success! By the numbers, we had 120 games played over 2 scorching hot days by 82 juniors (and 38 parents). The heat was tough, but our kids and their families were tougher! Gallons of cold water, bags of ice, hats, sunscreen and the occasional well-timed pier jump kept competitors cool enough to compete. Kudos to all players for their hard work, skillful tennis and admirable sportsmanship. Thank you to Bryan Yagi and the tennis attendants for helping us stay organized at the kiosk, friends and family for coming out to cheer, and to Kick It Dance Studio for donating all of the Gatorade.

84% of WOMEN MISSING BENEFITS OF SPORTS The following is an excerpt from a new study that finds severe gender inequality for Canadian women in sport. March 7, 2016. Canada may be a sport-loving nation, but when it comes to access to sport for Canadian women, it has a long way to go for the win. The report, entitled Women in Sport—Fueling a Lifetime of Participation, highlights the severe gender inequality for Canadian women in sport, and is the first of its kind, pairing data and research from academic journals and peer-reviewed articles with primary research obtained from national surveys and the analysis of four years of female sports media coverage. Among its key findings: • 41 per cent of girls between the ages of 3-17 years do not participate in sport— and this jumps to 84 per cent in adult women; • Entering adolescence, sport participation drops by 22%, and school sport participation drops close to 26% • By ten years of age, if a girl has yet to participate in sports, there is only a 10% chance that she will be physically active as an adult

Victoria Beach HERALD

• Only 24 per cent of all Athletic Director positions and 17 per cent of all head coaching spots in the CIS are female; • Only 38 per cent of senior staff and 29 per cent of board members are female, among national and multi-sport organizations; • A review of programming data from Canada’s primary national sports networks, concluded that of approximately 35,000 hours in programming in 2014, only 4 per cent went towards the coverage of women’s sports, with over half of that percentage covering women’s professional tennis and the Sochi Olympics; • Only 5 per cent of the total area of top national print media sports coverage researched was dedicated to women; • Only 24 per cent featured any coverage of women at all; • The representation of women in sport commonly centers on femininity, rather than highlighting their athletic accomplishments. What you can do: • Schedule time for sport and recognize its importance for physical, mental, and social health; • Help girls’ confidence in sport by focusing on fundamental movements such as kicking, running, jumping, and catching before introducing sport-specific skills; • Encourage girls to join and continue to play, coach, and officiate a variety of sports from youth into adulthood; • Support elite female athletes by attending and watching events and by following them on social media; • Promote female sports news stories that focus on athletic skills, healthy living champions, accomplishments, and profiles of positive role models; • Encourage the “next generation” of female sports enthusiasts by supporting an environment that is diverse, welcoming, and fun. At VB we have held Girls Tennis Day for the last 12 years. Our last two head tennis positions were filled by females. Although there are fewer females than males playing in tournaments, female participation in our programming is extremely high. At VB we provide opportunities for everyone to participate in a positive and encouraging environment.

thank you: to John Heppenstall and Allan Morrish for organizing and hosting another fabulous VB Senior Tennis Tournament. Despite the large entry, and the absence of Greg Loader, the tournament went off without a hitch. to Matt Heiman, Geoff Kirbyson and John Blair for teaching Adult Drills on July 26. to all the participants in the Senior Tournament who gave us three days of entertaining tennis. to Andy Boehm from the local police force for using his radar gun to measure the fastest serves at the VB Senior Tournament. Not all contestants could participate but, for those who did, the most accurate serve was Lisa Lucht and the fastest serve was a three way tie at 111 mph between Matt Heiman, Brian Forsyth and Mike Lodewyks.

Wow! What a fantastic summer of events so far! What an amazing group of volunteers we have to convene our events – both regular events and special events. We have some new convenors this summer and still our events keep running no problem. Shauna and I have been your Special Events convenors for 3 years and we are happy to pass on our duties. We recruited Lindsay Stevenson for this summer to learn the role. And, as of Sports Day, we have found her a new partner – Cathy Carlson! Thanks ladies for volunteering to keep our programs going. This job involves organizing volunteer convenors before the season and getting the calendar ready to print. AND it involves asking new people to take on events. Not easy!! So, if you are ready, please contact us and help keep the Flea Market going. We need someone to partner up with Lyndsi and also to head up the clean-up as Lorraine Cook is retiring after many years. If we don’t find a volunteer, we will not have this event and it can be tricky to find volunteers before the summer starts. So, talk to your friend and come on board‌you can do it!! Volleyball Tournament Reminder The volleyball tournament is a fun event taking place Saturday August 6th at the Sports Grounds. We have a recreational side and a competitive side. You must have at least two female players on your team. Please register your team with Lisa at 204-999-4715 by Friday August 5th. Lisa Lucht and Sophie McGoey

VB Novelty Tennis Tournament 2016 August 13th and 14th As we begin to wind down the tennis season at our beloved VB. courts, we would like to remind everyone that the Novelty Tennis Tournament will be held on the weekend of August 13th and 14th. FUNALICIOUS MUCH! Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Please be advised that all players must be members of the Victoria Beach Club and have their own shoe tag. Brenda and I look forward to an excellent weekend of great tennis, many laughs and camaraderie. Please note that this tournament is a two day event. Please consult your social calendars and ensure that you are available for both days. Dropping out at the last minute makes it difficult and cumbersome for the conveners. That being said, please also let us know via the sign up sheets if you can only play either the Saturday OR Sunday and we will contact you in the event of a last minute dropout due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. Here are a few important notes for your information. • Sign up sheets will be posted at the tennis courts on Friday, August 5th at noon. • Sheets will be taken down at 5pm on Thursday, August 11th (or when the first 48 players have signed up). POLICEMANS CORNER At 05:02 hours last Saturday, a cottage owner called VB Police stating that there was a large male on his deck with a screwdriver in his hand, banging on the door, telling the cottage owner to open the door. There was another large male standing “6” at the fence gate. Both were dressed in dark clothing. The male was informed that the Police had been called and were on their way. Police response time was 12 minutes. People are reminded that we do live in a resort community but there ARE wild animals here and there ARE people lurking around, bent on doing crime and taking what is not theirs. This is said not to scare but to inform and remind. The VB Police are here for you 24-7 and we service a small area which makes our response time very quick. DO NOT open your door to strangers and LET US KNOW right away, not the next day when you spot us cycling or walking about. It is now mandatory Province wide that anyone under 18 years of age must wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. Some feel they are exempt when at the beach but this is not so. An example of why it is important to wear a bicycle helmet AT ANY AGE occurred recently. While riding with her husband, a 63-year-old female fell off her bicycle and hit her head, knocking herself unconscious for several minutes. She sustained a nasty gash to the back of her head which bled profusely and required medical attention. This can happen to anyone at any time so please be prepared and ride smartly. I have noticed that skiers have started wearing ski helmets and now it is unusual to see a skier / boarder not wearing one. The VBPolice in conjunction with the Moonlight Inn have embarked on a reward program for youngsters wearing bicycle helmets. See article in Herald # 6 page 28. Stewart MacPHERSON

VB Community Church Thanks a lot to Paul Boge for once again bringing the message. And it’s nice to see beach people back to renew old friendships in the congregation. Next week we will have Murray Henderson with us again - his retirement is to our advantage here at VB. See you Sunday! Betty Hansford

Annual VB Pedalling for Wishes Ride

On August 24th, 2016 the 7th Bi-Annual Victoria Beach Police “Pedaling for Wishes Ride” will take place. This marathon bike ride is in support of the Children Wish Foundation which grants wishes for children with a life-threatening illness. The bike ride starts at the Victoria Beach gate and ends with a police escorted ride through Portage and Main with a grand finish at the Travelodge on Fermor Road in Winnipeg. Riders that participant in the ride raise money through donation or sponsorships. A booth will be set up this year in the village green on Sunday August 1st from 12:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon to explain the ride and collect donations. Support of any size will be gratefully accepted. Let’s work together to grant some deserving children their wish. The more money raised the more children we can help. In 2014 the ride raised over $30,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation and granted several children their dream wish. This year’s ride is dedicated to granting the wish of a special 5 year old named Hope. Within moments of her birth, Hope struggled to breathe. She was immediately taken to the neonatal intensive care unit where she was intubated (tube down her throat) to help her tiny body get oxygen. A few hours later she was transferred to another hospital in Winnipeg and barely 24 hours after her birth was flown by air ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. She was diagnosed with Pulmonary Atresia with Atrial Septal Defect, a serious congenital heart defect that is often diagnosed before birth, but in Hope’s case did not show up in any of her fetal scans. While in Edmonton, Hope underwent PDA litigation and then had open heart surgery to put a central shunt in her chest. Several days later she had to undergo the procedure again to revise the shunt because it had clotted. Hope responded very well after the second surgery, and by the time she was 5 weeks old she could go home with her family. Although she lives with very low oxygen levels, she always seems to have more energy than her mom and dad! Hope hasn’t decided yet what her Wish will be, but is having a lot of fun thinking about all the possibilities. She has some really great ideas - like taking a rocket ship up to see the moon (but only if Queen Elsa from the movie Frozen can come too), and meeting a “real, live unicorn”. Help us grant Hope and other children their wishes! Donations can be made at the information booth at the gate, next Sunday in the village green or to any participating riders.

Best Spot on the Lot Raffle Proceeds Support the Victoria Beach Doctor’s Office and First Responders I was asked again this week, “Where are the AEDs?” Now, some of you are probably asking, “What is an AED?” AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. They are portable electronic devises that diagnose life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and then treat them through defibrillation. AEDs are designed to be used by a layperson and can be highly effective if used quickly during a cardiac arrest. Victoria Beach is equipped with several AEDs and they are accessible at the following locations: • VB Clubhouse (when unlocked, swim instructors have access) - inside front entrance, on right • VB Tennis Courts - ask court attendant • Victoria Beach Community Center - inside front doors on right, next to the kitchen door • VB Fire Dept - one in Fire Rescue Unit, one in Water Rescue vessel and one in Medical First Responder Unit • VB Police Dept. - in Police Vehicle Knowing the location of the nearest AED, calling 911, and applying knowledge learned from taking first aid and CPR courses could help save a life. The “Best Spot on the Lot” Raffle raises money for the Victoria Beach Medical Assistance Fund. These funds are used to purchase equipment for the Doctor’s Office and our First Responders. The tickets are $2.00 each and the draw is Sunday Sept. 4th. First Prize is free reserved prime parking for 2017 season. Second prize is 4 free taxi rides. Third prize is a $75.00 Gift Certificate to Carol’s on Leon. Fourth prize is a Gift Package from Tiffanie’s Beauty Salon. Tickets are available at the Parking Lot and Tiffanie’s Beauty Salon on Ateah Rd. I will be selling tickets on the village green on Saturday, July 30th from 10:00 to 4:00. Come see me. Railway Centennial: Sharing Memories of the Beach In the spring of 1916, the Canadian Northern Railway announced that the two new lake resorts of Victoria Beach and Grand Marais (Grand Beach) were ‘ready to open for the season’ on Saturday, June 17th. It has been 100 years since Mr. Osborne Scott, the passenger agent, opened the new railway station at Victoria Beach and the first train steamed in. At that time, there were less than a dozen buildings here, consisting of a small store, a post office, a scattering of cottages and the Pinehurst Inn at Pier Point. To recognize our railway centennial, we invite you to join your fellow lakers to share stories at the Art Vincent Memorial Stage on the Village Green, where the train used to roll in. This informal event will take place beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 14th. We can reminisce about early years, travelling to the beach on the train and anything else that people care to share. We will have some interesting historic photos to present to you. Another 30+ Dance Done and Dusted

I would like to thank all who attended. The toga theme worked exceptionally well - a number of cottages lost bed sheets with a few found on the beach and in the bushes the next morning. I would like to specifically thank those who assisted in the planning and operation including Suzy Hester, Diana Jones, Shannon Johnson, Lyndsay Stevenson and Paul Wiebe. In addition, the outstanding assistance of Bruce Sirrell and his Rec staff (I would still be cleaning without their support), Joyce and her team from the Moonlight Inn, Chris Chipman / Steve Dubienski for the fantastic food and of course Russ Psooy and the Lemon Swishes. Theme pending on next year’s gig. Douglas Pritchard
