Piping on the Green On the fine evening of August 10, Stuart MacPherson, Keith Burr and Hayden Landolt played together on the Village Green and collected funds for the Children’s Wish. Keith plays with Army, Navy and Airforce Veteran’s band in Winnipeg. Hayden is 14, from Toronto, and plays with the 48th Highlanders. Hayden’s grandparents live on 6th Ave and he has been at Victoria Beach every summer since he was 4 months old. When asked by a passerby, “Isn’t there a noise by-law?”, our police chief replied, “Not for bagpipes!” Cathy Landolt

It’s hard to believe the activities at VB are coming to a close. It’s a time to reflect on what went well and what we might change for future years. Here are my thoughts and those of the community that have been shared with me: We have an outstanding group of volunteers on the Board, Executive as well as convenors of all of our cherished events. The time these volunteers give from their holiday time is truly extraordinary. I would like to make special shout outs to a few volunteers moving on (I apologize in advance if I missed you!): Leslie Sarchuk- thank you for your years as Director at Large where most notably you worked extremely hard to get as much money in employment grants as you could. Thanks also for your help on the Clubhouse Restoration Committee, for helping to organize the Volunteer Appreciation Event, etc., etc. Wendy Derksen- you did a great job keeping us organized, taking minutes, ensuring we always had popcorn, organizing the Volunteer Appreciation Event, etc., etc. Bryan and Lisa Yagi- I don’t play tennis (considering taking up over the winter though ‘cause it sounds like I’m missing out!) but I know from comments from the community that this duo has made a very significant contribution to our tennis programs. The biggest problem we have at the courts is that tennis has become so popular that wait times can be long. This is likely a direct result of the programming they have introduced to get beginners out and interested in the sport. It’s a good problem to have! Shauna Filuk and Jill Kirbyson have been our special events coordinators for the past few years and have ensured that all events were scheduled with a convenor without conflict. They are both extremely organized and helpful to all convenors taking on events. Cathy Carlson and Lindsay Stevenson are taking on these roles. Kevin Dube and Barb Pritchard- although they aren’t turning over the Herald pen yet, they have mentioned that they would like to do so after the 2017 season. Please give some thought as to whether you have any ideas of who could take over from this team that works so hard for our community to ensure we know what’s happening at activities (ie Did Jeff Hughes win the slow bike race again?), to ensure we see smiles of kids and adults of our community and to provide a venue for advertisers to make the community aware of the services they are able to provide to us. September long is late-ish this year as well as next year. Consideration is being given as to whether we expand

our calendar to 7 weeks rather than the 6 we ran this year. It would make a few of the weekends less manic! New events have been suggested which you can look for on the calendar next year – Ultimate tournament to name one. The flea market is a valued event by many and in order for it to continue, we need new volunteers to step forward to assist Lyndsi da Roza who for years has worked tirelessly alongside Joanne Gibson and Deb Covernton who are now moving on. This team has made tens of thousands of dollars for the Club over the years. The new wristbands seem to have been acceptedseveral people (ok mainly Dave Wilson) have shown me their tan lines from their wristbands. The smaller members improvised and used them as anklets which seemed to work fine as well. The August 20th 30+ Tragically Hip concert viewing tickets are sold out and have been for over a week. Doors open at 7:00. There will be a full bar. After the concert is done, a DJ will entertain us until 1 am. The net profit from the event will be donated to the Gord Downie Fund For Brain Cancer Research. There will be a donation box at the door if you would like to donate to this worthy cause. If you write a cheque, we will mail it in with our cheque, but you will get your own tax receipt. There is also a good chance we will be selling fun “concert T-shirts” commemorating the Hip Concert at the VB Clubhouse (still in the works), so bring $20 for one of those if you’re interested. There will be a few more days of Olympics coverage until the 21st of August. I don’t want to guess when we’ll be playing events on these last few days (this article is written a week in advance or print) - please check our twitter account (VBClubMB) for details (depends on what’s on when). The plan currently is to play noon3:00pm daily (other than Wed) next week and 6:00pm9:00pm Wednesday. Depending on timing of events, additional times will be added. Your membership (or $5 day pass) gets you in. The yoga program this year introduced a $15 wristband for the season per person on top of the membership fee. There wasn’t any noise when this new charge was implemented. Pam Beazley did a fabulous job organizing the yoga bands, the instructors and ensuring the program ran smoothly. The classes at times were very crowded, so we are discussing some potential changes for next year (i.e. 2 classes back to back with first being earlier than it is now) The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime, Suzy Hester

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 91st year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

ask. The attendant will help you get to the doctor safely. There is an occasional parking rate of only $2.00 to park your car and walk down. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR MEDICAL CARD. So once again, to thank Dr. Le and welcome Dr. Belynda SalterOliver. We appreciate your coming to Victoria Beach and sharing your skills with us. We have been so fortunate in the time of doctor shortages in remote areas to have the services of this wonderful team. Their presence here keeps the pressure off surrounding medical facilities. We hope to see you all again next year. RMVB REEVE, COUNCIL AND THE MEDICAL COMMITTEE

VB Doctor Thank You

After the thunder storm on Thursday evening of August 11, my kids headed out to go see The Force Awakens. They were excited for the last movie of the season before the drive back home to Calgary. However, on the last big hill toward the Clubhouse, my daughter’s foot slipped on her pedal and then the side of her leg was cut by the spikes of her big chain ring. Thanks to two dads - Gord and Mike for escorting her to the doctor. Good thing the office was still open till 7:30. Dr. Kearns was amazing with my daughter and sewed her up with 14 stitches. Dr Kearns worked well past her office hours as we were there almost 2 hours with all that was involved. Incidents like this is why we need our VB Doctors. Thank you Dr. Kearns and all our other doctors down here at the beach. Jill Kirbyson and family

6 August 19, 2016 Important Dates and Critical Information For Upcoming By-election

August 3 to September 1. The voters list is being up-dated by adding names of new owners, deleting those who are no longer eligible to vote and correcting other errors. Phone the office at 204 774 4263 if you need to wish to make changes or confirm that you are on the list. A person is eligible to have their name added to the Voters List if they are: 1) A Canadian Citizen and at least 18 years of age on Election Day; and 2) A resident of the local authority for at least six months prior to Election Day; or 3) A registered owner of land in the municipality for at least six months prior to Election Day. A maximum of two non-resident property owners per property may vote. Each of these voters must have written consent from a majority of the registered land-owners. Consent forms can be obtained from the municipal office and must be presented at the time of voting. (This must be done for each election.) August 22, 2016 is the first day to apply for sealed envelope ballot (a mail-in ballot). This is the only way people who are out of province during the election period can vote. A voter can phone the office to ask for a ballot to be mailed to them or they can request a sealed ballot in writing by mail, fax or email. What would normally happen is someone would call the office and municipal staff would either mail or email the application. The voter then must submit the application and legible photocopies of identification (a driver’s licence, medical card or passport that has an address). The office will then send a ballot with the appropriate envelopes to return it by mail. REMEMBER to be counted they must reach the RM office before 8 p.m. on October 7. August 26 to September 1, 2016 – Nomination papers are currently available. The papers will be accepted during regular business hours at the RM office during the last week of August. They can be submitted in person, by an agent or by fax. Ballots will be printed during the first week of September. September 9, 2016 is the first day to apply in person for sealed envelope ballot. If you will not be able to attend the advanced poll or the regular poll, you can go to the Municipal office on 303960 Portage Avenue on any working day and vote. Bring either a driver’s licence, medical card, passport or any other legally accepted ID. September 28, 2016 – Advance Polls will be located at the Senior’s Scene on 3 Ateah Road and the RM office 303- 960 Portage Avenue between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Please bring identification with you.

Victoria Beach HERALD

October 7, 2016 – Regular Polls will also be located at the Senior’s Scene on 3 Ateah Road and the RM office 303- 960 Portage Avenue between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Voters should bring identification with them to vote. Hopefully there will be a good turn out for the By-election.

COUNCIL CORNER Summer is coming to an end. Here, in the last Herald of the year, Reeve and Council would like to thank Barb Pritchard, Kevin Dubé and all others who help to prepare the Herald each weekend throughout the summer. It is a huge commitment of time and energy. The Herald is such an asset to the community. We know how much work is involved in preparing this valued piece of Victoria Beach culture. We appreciate being given the opportunity to write each week and share information that could be important to residents. The by-election is scheduled for Friday October 7. Polls will be held at the Seniors Scene on 3 Ateah Road and 303-960 Portage Avenue. Advanced Polls will be held September 28 at the same locations. Polls on both occasions are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is easy to keep in touch with what is happening in Victoria Beach when you sign up to receive emails from the office. Just go to the Victoria Beach website and sign up. There is never a reason to feel out of the loop. There are still a few cartons of Recycle bins for use in your cottage. You can go to the Information Office and sign one out. They are collapsible and compact (they take 1 square foot of floor space). Our pilot project, a scooter that is available for the use of people who have mobility issues, is under way. The scooter is stored in the new shelter attached to the parking lot office. Keys to the scooter are at the Information Booth. Stop by and make arrangements, if you are expecting a visitor who needs short term access to it. And finally, we hope that you have many opportunities to enjoy the beach in the autumn and we would like to wish you well over the winter months. And thank you for your support this past season. RMVB Council

Thank You to Drivers! A big thank you to all the vehicular traffic that leave plenty of space when passing me on the road. I am a regular cyclist working out on my road bike. For those of you not aware a road bike has very thin tires and if I am required to cycle on the shoulder, it greatly increases my chances of getting a flat. So many of you also slow down when passing me. I very much appreciate it and will attempt to give a wave in thanks. Debb Brethauer

Duplicate Bridge We had 10 couples out for our duplicate bridge on August 8th. Congratulations to Donna Thain and Fran Pollard who came in first E/W and Gail and Bob Henderson who came in first N/S. Please arrive Mondays at the clubhouse by 6:20 to play duplicate bridge. Cost to play is $1.00 and cold drinks are also sold for $1.00. Please support the Victoria Beach Club by buying a seasonal membership as we would not have bridge if it were not for the Victoria Beach Club. If you need a partner, call Ken at 756-3612.

A big heartfelt Thankyou to the jogger who stopped to help my aunt and uncle on August 5th. They are visiting from Germany and had a medical emergency when you stopped at 51 Bayview to give much needed assistance to them. You waited an hour in the rain to direct the ambulance to the cottage. Thank you so much and know she is doing well. She speaks often of your actions and thinks you are a Canadian and Victoria Beach hero. A big thank you as well to Dr. Garth Campbell for his care and humour. Dirk Graba

The last Herald!! It seems we just got the first one. We’ve had a great summer with various speakers from churches in and outside of Manitoba. Our thanks to all of you for bringing your messages. This Sunday we welcome Kathy and Ray Harris of the Salvation Army and Kris Taylor will be the final speaker of the 2016 Summer season. After the last service on August 28th our annual meeting will be held. At the end of the year our summer church donates to various charities which includes organizations here in the area and in Winnipeg. For those who like to sing, come around 10:30 to practice with the choir. We welcome you to join us on Sundays at 11 am.

Thank you for the Herald Online … For those of us who don’t get out to the Lake nearly as often as we’d like, or those who revisit memories from summers past, the Victoria Beach website has become a lifeline to all things V.B. We can now read our beloved Herald at work or check upcoming events from our classrooms with just a click of the mouse. Like all of our community events, this forum depends on steadfast volunteers. Many thanks to Chris Thomas for helping keep those near and far informed and connected. Visit the website anytime, anywhere at: http://www. victoriabeachclub.com Catherine Thomas

Sunset Bay Estates The east side of Lake Winnipeg features a new cottage/ home development in Grand Marais. Sunset Bay Estates was designed as an upscale beach development 50 minutes from Winnipeg. The development is comprised of over 160 fully serviced, treed 1/2 acre lots starting at $37,500. Sunset Bay Estates has several walking paths down to beach at Grand Marais, and is a 5-minute drive to Grand Beach. Lots have sold fast since the development was opened five years ago, partially on the strength of the VTB financing program that allows anyone to finance lot purchases through the developer. There are less than 50 lots left, with two of the three phases almost sold out. Phase 3 is now open, and playground construction is about to begin. Perhaps the most unique feature of Sunset Bay Estates is its brand new Municipal Low Pressure Sewer System. This state of the art system was put in by the RM of St. Clements to reduce pollution and protect Lake Winnipeg. It has the added benefit of making the development uniquely suited to year-round residents. While some owners are strictly summer cottage goers, the development is seeing more and more yearround homes with residents living full time, or Snow Birds staying in their Sunset Bay homes for three seasons. The owners of Sunset Bay Estates encourage cottagers to drive out the development – the turnoff is at Provincial Road 500 off Highway 12 across from the RCMP detachment. For driving directions, maps, and other information about the lots and building guidelines, see www.sunsetbayestates.com, or call 204-330-7077.

Family Games

Tennis Courts By Geoff Kirbyson Back in 1979 or ’80, a few Victoria Beach tennis enthusiasts had the crazy idea to double the number of courts in our community from three to six. The rationale was the number of players had grown so much that the wait times to get on the existing shale courts had become prohibitive. So, spearheaded by Ross Yarnell and Dave Drybrough, a fundraising campaign was launched and the dream of building courts 4, 5 and 6 was realized. Shortly afterwards, courts 1-3 were resurfaced and all of a sudden, Victoria Beach’s tennis community was buzzing. Since then, the senior tennis tournament has become the biggest tennis competition in the province virtually every year and with the addition of programming such as GVS, “Hit With a Pro,” junior clinics and other lessons plus the usual round robins, court time is at a premium like never before. In fact, for much of the 2016 season, it was all-too-common to experience wait times of one to two hours before you could get a court. In order to ease the pressure, players could arrive at 7 a.m. to play, an hour before the traditional 8 a.m. opening, and stay until way past sunset when they could barely see the racquet in their hands let alone the ball coming from the other side of the net. So, I believe the time has come to channel our inner 1979 and look at how we can expand our number of courts once again. There were 740 tennis members who played this summer plus another 200 or so who bought toe tags and didn’t play. Imagine the mayhem if those people had come out, too. The biggest tennis club in Manitoba is the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club, which has 11 courts and about 350 members. That’s about 32 members per court. The ratios are similar at other clubs around Winnipeg. At Victoria Beach, we have nearly 125 members per court. During all tournaments, the stands are jammed with fans, and during other times the number of people waiting to play has created an energy around the courts that has never existed before. Add in everybody hanging around the play structure

Tennis Courts continued... and stopping by en route to the store and bakery and there is no question that the tennis courts are the focal point of our community. I don’t know where all of the municipal property lines are but the time has come to investigate building at least two more courts and possibly three to accommodate both the current demand for courts and the future demand. I realize that it’s a short season but that’s all the more reason to have the facilities available during people’s precious summer holidays. Plus, how many more cottages have been built at Victoria Beach and in surrounding cottage communities in the last 35 years. The parking lot has been expanded several times in order to accommodate all of us. This population explosion will need to be dealt with in other ways, too, including the clubhouse and perhaps the Moonlight Inn. (How many five-year-olds lost their minds in the early evening ice cream lines this summer?) Of course, any expansion is going to cost a significant amount of money but it cost a significant amount of money 37 years ago, too. Imagine where we would be if we only had three courts? There are grants available through Tennis Canada and Tennis Manitoba which can be put towards expansions such as this. It’s also not unreasonable to raise the current rate of $15 for a toe tag, a fee that’s so low it’s beyond the point of ridiculous. For comparison purposes, a single person’s membership fee at WLTC is more than $300 for the summer while a round of nine holes of golf at the VB golf course is $14. There is talk that the foundation of the existing courts may need to be rebuilt in the next year or two as cracks are popping up too frequently. It could make sense from an economies of scale point of view to wrap all this work into one.

A Book Review of Gerald Marzorati’s “Late to The Ball” (2016)

By John Stapleton

Can an aging adult learn to become proficient in speaking a foreign language, in playing a musical instrument, or in taking up a new sport? Gerald Marzorati’s certainly thinks so, and in his wonderful new book, “Late To The Ball”, published by Scribner, this former editor of The New York Times Magazine provides evidence for his belief by describing his attempt to become a nationally competitive American tennis player at the age of 61. The book opens at the 2013 Senior National Grass Court Championships of the USTA in which he competes in the singles section. Characterizing himself as a “serious novice” with six years of experience and a National Rating of 4.0, he is eliminated in his first match with scores of 0-6, 0-6. The book closes with his participation with a partner in the 2014 doubles tournament, and again his team is eliminated in the first round 2-6, 4-6, a result that provides him considerable satisfaction. Between the two tournaments, Marzorati’s undertakes a journey to improve his ability to play tennis, and in so doing, he confronts many questions about himself, his motivation, the effects of the aging process, his relationships with family, friends, coaches, and fellow players, and his mortality. Readers will find much to ponder in his responses to these questions. There is a lot of tennis in this book - entertaining descriptions of many of the author’s matches, insightful observations about the worlds of professional and amateur tennis including the children’s game, and very readable accounts of his struggles to improve his serve and backhand. I was particularly interested in how he struggled to improve. He put in many hours of practice, and he engaged in a rigorous conditioning program. However, of most interest are his detailed descriptions of his tennis camp experiences: (a) at Court Think in St. George, Utah where he receives a Dartfish video analysis of his swing, (b) at the Rick Macci Tennis Academy in Florida where he encounters the biometric analyses of Brian Gordon, and (c) at the innovative Tennis Congress in Tucson, Arizona which is the brainchild of P.J. Simmons, whose blog titled The Road to 4.5 Tennis has been so influential. Marzorati’s makes extensive use of the literatures of expert performance, cognition, and neuroscience, and he gives appropriate credit to scholars in these disciplines. The book would be better had a bibliography been included. With the winding down of the tennis season at Victoria Beach, our members are beginning to think of strategies to follow between now and next summer. “Late to The Ball” by Gerald Marzorati’s contains lots of worthwhile ideas as well as the author’s advice “to proceed with patience and good humor, tackle the new thing you’re in bit by bit, keep expectations low, and persistence high” (p. 10).

2016 Manitoba Summer Games Sailing

VB Volunteers and Sailors This year’s Summer Games, held every two years and based out of Steinbach, saw the sailing component being staged at West Hawk Lake from August 8th to the 10th. Victoria Beach sailors and volunteers were a major part of the event with 11 VBers at the sailing competition. There were 10 races held with the staging are off the main beach at West Hawk Lake with athletes staying at the Athletes Village in Steinbach and bused daily to the sailing venue. The sailing event was very successful and sailing received great coverage on the games website. All events at the games, as well as sailing, were represented by athletes from the 8 Manitoba regions, Westman, Eastman, Interlake, Winnipeg Gold, Winnipeg Blue, Norman, Central and Parkland. Our sailors represented the areas where they reside.

The classes for sailing were the Laser Radial male and female 17 and under, Windsurfing 17 and under and Optimist male and female 15 and under. The sailors from Victoria Beach competed very well and medals were taken home from our athletes. Medals were won by Molly Ingenmey with a gold in Laser Radial female, Tomas Green with a silver in Optimist male and Alex Martin with a silver in the Laser Radial male category. Ella Russell finished 5th in Windsurfing. James Thompson finished 4th in the Laser Radial male, both just shy of a medal. The volunteers at the event were Chris Aldridge, Race Officer, Willie MacDonald and Brent Green on the water doing Mark Set, Ginny Beauchemin and Jona Green on the signal boat recording and race timing and Gary Albl managing the Windsurfing races. The athletes all deserved the recognition they attained by always having good sportsmanship, great camaraderie and being a very close knit team. They competed well and some event winners were not decided until the final race of the series. Congratulations go out to all of them and they all have bright futures in their sailing endeavors. Congratulations to Ella Russel, on the podium right, who participated in the PowerSmart Manitoba Games in Steinbach last week. She participated in both Windsurfing and Mountain Bike Events. She took the Bronze Medal in both the Long Course and Short Course mountain bike events. This week marks the end of the VB Herald issues for this year but not for our riders and their various events. There should be about a dozen of our group participating in the Banff Gran Fondo on August 20. Hopefully the temperature will be above freezing this year. The VB Police Children’s Wish Ride goes on the 24th of this month. Contact Clyde Raven at the VB Police Office if you wish to donate to this worthy cause. Our riding group was featured on the intro to the “GCN Show” August 9th. You can check it out on YouTube “Global Cycling Network” We will continue to ride even as the days get shorter and we lose some riders returning to their winter homes and work. WHERE IS EAST BEACHES? You won’t easily find “EAST BEACHES” on a Manitoba map. It is more of a concept of an area defined geographically between the lower end of Lake Winnipeg and Hwy. 59N, sometimes reaching a little more easterly to St.Georges following the Winnipeg River, or southeast to include Thalberg and Gull Lake. It mostly stretches from Elk Island to Patricia Beach. It has been used by a number of groups to foster the idea that despite administrative boundaries of governments, we can only

benefit from working together and supporting each unique community. Names such as East Beaches Senior Scene, East Beaches Animal Rescue, East Beaches Resource Centre, or East Beaches Regional Complex Inc. all convey a sense of the larger community. Rural communities thrive on volunteer support. The success of these types of organizations and their events depend on community participation and encouragement. EAST BEACHES SENIOR SCENE NEWS As the summer of 2016 drifts into a pleasant memory, we at the Senior Scene can reflect on another busy, productive and fun summer. Besides the many regular programs offered to both members and non-members, we also hosted a catered family reunion, RM Council meetings, a craft sale and are looking forward to hosting a wedding and special anniversary reception. We have completed a back door ramp, a new automatic door system for the rear of the building, a handicap washroom in the basement and upgrade the basement lighting. We are completing a lounge/games room in the basement and have received a federal grant to replace the main hall hardwood floor and increase the heating/cooling capacity of the main hall. We still have one major community event in the fall, the 6th annual Fall Supper. This event is open to everyone so if you are planning to be at your home or cottage on Saturday, September 24th and would like to avoid cooking, then why not bring your family to the Senior Scene. There will be two sittings, the first at 5:00 pm and the second at 7:00 pm. The cost is $15. Tickets will be available at the VB Store, Senior Scene and Saffie’s Store. This is a sell-out event so get your tickets early. Finally, if your summer vacation is coming to an end, rather than getting down, think wistfully about next summer and our major fundraising event, a gala Lobster Fest. What better way to start off a new season, than to meet with old friends over a glass of wine and a scrumptious lobster meal. This is another sell-out event, so mark June 10th on your calendar and watch the local bulletin boards for ticket availability.

VICTORIA BEACH POLICE “PEDALING FOR WISHES RIDE”

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2016

Our 7th Bi-annual event is now only days away. All the long training rides are coming to an end and all our participants should now be tapering and resting up for our big 130 km cycling journey. The jerseys have arrived and look spectacular this year. Speaking of our participants, they are also now in the final stages of their fund-raising efforts but it is still not too late to contribute. Please consider a donation to our cause - The Children’s Wish foundation, which grants the wishes of children ages 3-17 coping with high risk, life threatening illnesses. See any participant or member of the Victoria Beach Police to donate. Donations can also be made at the Information Booth. For a donation of $20.00 or more you will be mailed an official tax receipt. We are sending out a challenge to all “8 at the Gate” members. If you are not participating in our event you should be donating to one of your fellow club mates who is doing this event. If you are not donating to someone you should be ashamed of yourself. A bit of History regarding our Bi-annual event: The ride started back in 2004 when Victoria Beach Police Officer (Now Winnipeg Police Detective) Lindsey Stevens got together with his colleagues and Chief MacPHERSON to start a similar fundraising initiative put on by the Winnipeg Police “Cops for Kids” Bicycle Relay team. With the support of the “Cops for Kids” team

and the W.P.S. Bicycle Patrol Unit, the V.B.P worked hard to get this very worthy fundraiser off the ground. Since that time it has grown to be an important fundraising event for The Children’s Wish Foundation, having set a record with $30,000 donated in 2014. The grand total raised over the previous six events is over $100,000. I am also very excited to announce that we will have a V.I.P. special guest riding with us this year. My good friend and a previous participant Chief Devon Clunis of the Winnipeg Police Service will once again be joining us for this year’s ride. Chief Clunis who is “very recently” retired from the W.P.S is a veteran rider with the W.P.S. “Cops for Kids” Bicycle Relay team and I have had the pleasure of riding all over North America with him on our many W.P.S. tours. He is one special person and as nice a guy you will ever come across. Residents of Victoria Beach are welcome to come up to the gate to meet Chief Clunis and wish the riders well as they depart on their epic cycling journey at around 7:20 a.m on Wednesday the 24th. Flea Market 2017 in Jeopardy Sadly, we are at the end of programs and special events for 2016. We will be heading back to our winter homes, some in Manitoba, and others farther away. Our VB calendar is put together and printed in the spring so it is ready for the membership drive. Looks like we will not be including a Flea Market for 2017. Our previous convenors, Deb Covernton and Joanne Gibson, have all the Flea Market duties organized in a binder to share. Lyndsi da Roza is willing to co-convene, but needs a local partner as she lives in Vancouver. A clean-up convenor is needed for next summer too. If you would like to see this event continue, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Shauna: 204-941-0077 Jill 403-807-1784 Lindsay 204-990-6475.

Walk for Water 2016 Really Delivers! It was a ‘Gold Medal’ victory for Lake Winnipeg. This year’s Walk for Water raised $19,319, surpassing last year’s mark. A huge thank you goes out to all walkers, pledgers, donors, supporters, sponsors and friends and volunteers who made this possible. With your time, advocacy and generous support, you once again have demonstrated how strongly we in Victoria Beach and East Beaches area feel about having a healthy lake. We Love Our Lake. See you next year on the starting line. Sandy McCaig

Beach People Rebecca & John Elliott from Mesa, Arizona have really enjoyed their time at 218-7th Ave. Long bike rides, tennis, walks, no mosquitoes, and visits to the city to view Assiniboine Park, the Legislative building, CHRM and more. We’ve had fun teaching them to play cribbage, and having some friendly Canada vs USA rivalry during the Olympics. Enjoy the rest of your time here at VB-- who knows-- you may want to come back and buy --oops, rent next year! Americas

Long time summer residents Murray and Isabel Auld had a love affair with Victoria Beach. As a 9 year old boy, Murray first experienced Victoria Beach with his family, who travelled by train from Regina. He was smitten. Isabel and Murray spent their honeymoon at Victoria Beach in September 1942, the first car to reach the beach by driving in the ditches after roads were washed out that year. After renting cottages for many years, they bought their Sunset Ave. log cabin in 1960. Victoria Beach was a constant in their lives. Murray passed away in September 2015, and

Isabel in March 2016. Murray’s 100th birthday was on August 16, 2016. Sincere appreciation to the special neighbours, friends and generations of the Ateah family who contributed so much to Isabel and Murray’s enjoyment of “the camp.” The Auld family continues the summer traditions that Isabel and Murray began over 70 years ago. Wearing your Helmet Pays Off! Sergeant Raven, the Victoria Beach Police Bicycle Patrol and a very special

Isabella, Caroline and Georgia Stewart with Sergeant Raven My children and I were riding down Ateah Road, and we were stopped by Sergeant Clyde Raven who noticed our helmets (including our baby’s oversized one!) and rewarded the children with ice cream certificates for The Moonlight Inn. My daughters Georgia, Isabella and baby Caroline were absolutely over the moon. Our family rule has always been that we ALL wear helmets while cycling as our brains and skulls are too precious not to protect. I was so grateful that this reward and the police noticing the good and right things we do will only further incentivize my children (and me!) to wear our helmets. Thank you to

thank you to The Moonlight Inn. Ali Stewart
