If I were to influence healing through design I'd like to change how we, as a society and a practice, perceive and approach mental health, as I believe it is just as important as any other field of healthcare. In order to achieve this I would need to have a better understanding of how the best medical professionals in the world are diagnosing and treating patients with mental illness, and additionally I would love to explore how we as architects can design an atmosphere within a healthcare facility that respects the numerous mental health issues that exist in our world today. It seems to me that healthcare architecture has improved significantly in just about every sector other than mental healthcare. Understanding and treating mental illness in our society begins with how the medical field, and design of their facilities, addresses this incredibly important aspect of our lives.
