Welcome to the latest edition of Show Review UK. The weather is finally starting to pick up! We have had some awful weather the last few months haven’t we?! With the heavy rain causing floods all across the UK I really think the government need to plan a new way of protecting households who are vulnerable to these floods - the flooding has had disastrous effects on peoples lives.

In our March/April edition we have some fantastic reviews on some of the best exhibitions that were held at the beginning of 2014. The first half of the year is always busy in the exhibition industry, with the shows launching on a regular basis our directors were spoilt for choice.

Starting of this edition of the magazine is the Ideal Home Show at Christmas. This event was full of outstanding exhibitors who launched various new products and showcased their best sellers to the public. Our directors have singled out who they felt stood out at last years event.

Further on in the magazine is Interiors UK 2014. The event offered a great range of products and services from furniture, lighting and flooring down to the all important décor items. Exhibitors selected this year fully deserve merit for their performance at the show!

Next up is the Top Drawer Show. This year they launched ‘CRAFT’ which we felt was a complete success. There were new exhibitors launching at the new co-siding event who offered some brilliant and never seen before products - some of which we have selected in our ‘Best Selected Exhibitor’ category. Following the Top Drawer Show Review is the much anticipated Spring Fair International. The biggest event that our directors visit each year and it did not disappoint! With over 300’000 products to choice from, visitors were spoilt for choice. We were left in awe - and so will you when you see who we have selected this year!

Ideal Home Show at Christmas - Best Selected Exhibitors IT’S ALL SNOW BUSINESS AT IDEAL HOME SHOW AT CHRISTMAS! A festive filled programme, Pantomime Dames, over 700 first-rate exhibitors and a whole host of celebrity ambassadors and stars all led to a bumper packed Ideal Home Show at Christmas with record numbers for 2013.

The biggest consumer Christmas event in the UK smashed previous attendance records with over 90,000 visitors flocking to Earl’s Court during the 13th to 17th November 2013.

Visitors arrived to a snow-kissed Earl’s Court for an event launched in style by show ambassadors Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Lisa Faulkner, Gino D’Acampo, Olly Smith and Suzi Perry and panto stars of stage Paul Burham and Graham Hoadly, playing the Ugly Sisters with Bobby Crush as Widow Twankey adding to the festive fun.

Covering seven show sections including Interiors & Home Accessories, Food & Drink, Home Improvements & Outdoor Living, Fashion & Beauty, Technology & Gadgets, Gifts and Christmas Decorations, the show offered visitors the opportunity to tick everything off the Christmas list. Plus this year showcased some very special celebrity exhibitors including Peter Andre, TOWIE’s Amy Childs and Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Lang, who were out in force at the show for signings and product exclusives.

The Homes for Heroes appeal supported Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Family Accommodation Services, an essential service that enables parents of children requiring intensive treatment accommodation near the hospital so that children know that their parents are right beside them and celebrities and visitors alike showed their support in the thousands.

“This has been a fantastic end to the year for Media 10. The show

had everything you could want for Christmas and it is fantastic to see our visitors eating, drinking, shopping, skating and getting into the festive spirit”, said Media 10 CEO Lee Newton.

He continued, “Christmas should be about fun, fabulous and family and we are delighted at the mix this year. Fun and frolics with the panto dames, family and charity with the wonderful Great Ormond Street Hospital and of course our superb expert Ideal Home Show at Christmas celebrity Ambassadors. It was a truly spectacular event all-round.”

Rob Nathan, Marketing Director of Media 10 also commented ‘To achieve a visitor increase exceeding 10,000 people year on year is a tremendous result and testimony to the hard work and innovation of everyone that works on this event. It is particularly impressive when you consider the competition for live events at this time of year. Ideal Home Show at Christmas is not only the largest exhibition in the market but its visitor numbers exceed the cumulative totals of Good Food Show, Country Living Fair, Gadget Show Live and Spirit of Christmas combined. This event has rounded off a fantastic year for Media 10, which has seen visitor numbers increase on every single one of our consumer and trade events’.

In 2014 the Ideal Home Show at Christmas will be bringing festive cheer again to Earls Court from 19th-23rd November and for the very first time, the show will be heading North West with Ideal Home Show at Christmas taking place at Event City in Manchester on 14th-16th November 2014.

The Ideal Home Show will return to London at Earls Court with the iconic spring show, from the 14th – 30th March 2014.

INTERIORS UK 2014

Interiors UK 2014 - Best Selected Exhibitors VISITORS NUMBERS RISE AT THIS YEARS INTERIORS UK! INTERIORS UK, organised by UBM Live Built Environment, closed its doors last Wednesday following four days of good business as high calibre retailers attended the event from across the UK. Now in its 29th year, the show proved an even bigger draw for its latest edition with representatives from across key multiple, independent and contract retailers with Lee Longlands, Fishpools, Taskers, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Dreams, C P Hart, Zaha Hadid Architects, to name a few, all in attendance.

With over 500 brands exhibiting, an expansion on 2013, there was an extensive range of both high quality and relevant brands on offer, which too reflected in visitor numbers which were up 15.09%*yearon-year.

Event organisers UBM are world-renowned in delivering relevant audience figures which has culminated in an impressive 21,114 visitors* to the four day show.

Retailers from around the UK were pleased with the quality and variety of brands exhibiting as well as the comprehensive features at the event, giving positive feedback on the latest edition of the show.

Top Drawer Show - Best Selected Exhibitors HOME, TOP DRAWER & CRAFT ATTRACT RECORD NUMBERS OF BUYERS AND EXHIBITORS! London was the ultimate spring retail destination as the season of buying started in style at Top Drawer, Home and new launch, CRAFT, attracting record number of buyers and exhibitors. The three complementary events presented over 1,000 British and international brands and designer-makers for eager buyers of design-led homeware, gifts, accessories and craft. As the first event of the year, the shows provide an indicator for the outlook for 2014 and early signs are positive; visitor numbers enjoyed an increase against 2013 and trading was brisk; buyers across the board commented on the calibre of exhibitors this year and were inspired by the stylish, contemporary offering at the shows.

At Home…

New launches seemed to appear on every stand; Sebastian Conran introduced us to Universal Expert, his new collection of useful and beautiful kitchenware, Makers and Merchants unveiled their range of exclusive food and homeware products and catching everyone’s eye was the UK launch of the Martone Cycle and items from the new Spring/Summer collection from Alessi.

Established global brand, Bloomingville provided visitors with a top edit of relaxed contemporary homewares while Au Maison, Broste Copenhagen and Ferm Living satisfied the evident desire for ontrend elegant Scandinavian living.

As well as being an exclusive first chance to see the leading international brands, Home was the place to discover a wealth of new talent. Homegrown, the area of the show dedicated to up-andcoming designers, saw designer and printmaker, Fanny Shorter - winner of this year’s bursary - make her debut with a distinctive collection of detailed print work.

An eclectic and varied range of exhibitor demonstrations created a lively buzz at Home: from wine tasting with legendary chef Raymond Blanc to a screen printing workshop with graffiti artist Pure Evil on the Royal Doulton stand, which raised over £1000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust Charity.

In Top Drawer: The biggest ever Top Drawer made its mark this year with more new international brands than ever before. Exhibiting for the very first time were Millefiori, the pioneering Italian wellbeing brand, Bakker Made With Love, representing French style and design, popular Icelandic children’s brand, Tulipop and Matt & Nat, the vegan

handbag specialists from Canada, amongst others. Visitors were also delighted see the return of many leading contemporary brands such as Nkuku, Rice, Miss Etoile, Culinary Concepts and many more.

‘Spotted’ in Top Drawer welcomed 11 new and exciting design talents, who were expertly hand selected by independent design writer Charlotte Abrahams. In its 11th edition, exhibitors included Foldie, Studio Scrase, Helen Round, Meryn, Petra Borner, Wit Shop, Francesca Iannaccone, Rhian McLaren, Made In Dad’s Shed, Justine Ellis and Wick & Tallow.

CRAFT Launched: Brand new show CRAFT offered a rare opportunity for retailers to meet and source covetable one-off pieces from over 100 leading UK and international artisans and makers, including collectives of design groups such as Craft Northern Ireland, Emergents Makers and Handmade Japan. Each group nurtures new and existing craft talent and brought with them a handful of their most talented makers who offered their own interpretation of the handmade.

The launch was a resounding success, drawing a new audience of galleries, museums and collectors to the London buying event.

ATLAS & I, founded in 2011 by designer Sophie Kirkpatrick, who – finding herself strapped for cash having recently moved to London – came up with the idea of giving her friends and family original, personalised presents at Christmas.

Initially the gifts were created by hand cutting silhouettes of animals and pets from antique maps using old bits of wallpaper, cards and wrapping paper mounted in old picture frames.

Through word of mouth, orders started flooding in for bespoke pieces. In the Spring 2013 I flew to Ho Chi Minh City to meet with a number of different textiles cooperatives to discuss the manufacture of a small range of hand-embroidered bedding made of 100% pure luxury linen and a selection of beautiful hand stitched mulberry silk and velvet quilts.

I found a workshop in the countryside that employs around a dozen local women. They are all highly skilled artisans and every piece is finished with great attention and care. They were delighted to work with my designs to create a unique product at an affordable price. The range combines classic luxury with a contemporary twist. Our linen is a very soft, light and fluid material, with a rich and luxurious feel, and as it is absorbent it keeps moisture away from your body, so it’s lovely to sleep in. Large Ceramic Vessels by Moyra Stewart...

These large ceramic vessels are hand built and fired by the Naked Raku technique. This new range of “Lewisian Gneiss” dishes, urns and vessels take their inspiration from the ancient rock found on the west coast of Scotland. Ceramic Artist, Moyra Stewart has been hand building her large ceramic vessels for more than 30 years, in London and Canada before returning to her native Scotland.

Now back in production from her studio in rural Fife, Moyra’s award winning large designs have been exhibited at The Royal Scottish Academy and Galleries across Scotland. Bringing her beautiful, one of a kind, pieces to Craft and the South for the first time, Moyra hopes to attract interior designers, stylists and galleries looking for new original work, perfect for signature pieces in contemporary and classic interiors.

Naked Raku is a highly labour intensive process, each piece being fired individually in an outdoor kiln, extracted at high heat and smoked in a covered container to achieve the rich crackle and dense black lines. The multiple layers of slip and glaze are laboriously rubbed off when the piece has cooled. Norman Yap Ceramics: Thrown Stoneware and Porcelain...

Penny Price: Designer & Maker of High Quality Furniture!

Norman is a British studio potter who throws bowl, bottle and vase studio forms in either porcelain or stoneware.

His forms are simple but striking and gain their final identity from the choice of clay, form and embellishment.

Penny Price is a professional furniture designer/maker and trained at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College where she obtained a BA Hons degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship. For a time she worked with other makers before setting up her own business in 1999. Penny is particularly interested in movements such as Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Bauhaus and Art Deco and often uses these features in her work.

Stoneware work is thrown from clay stained with oxides, which then bleed through the matte blue green glaze, resulting in one off pieces. The black glaze picks up flashing from the gas flames, adding movement and dynamism. The work is raw glazed and once fired in reduction to 1225C. Porcelain pieces are subjected to surface treatments highlighting the whiteness and feel of fired porcelain. Glazed work features brilliant, fluxing glazes in blue green celadons and copper red that flow down the work. New work however features carving and gouging, resulting in dramatic textures and exciting translucency when near a source of light.

Designing contemporary furniture that is based on traditional methods of construction and finishing she believes that furniture must have a sense of proportion, balance, elegance and little over elaboration. Her work has simple clean lines, delicate curves and this is often enhanced by fine inlay work. Individual pieces are tailor made to a client’s specifications and requirements resulting in furniture that offers them a lifetime of joy and pleasure.

Norman is also a writer and editor and produces London Potters News. He sits on the councils of London Potters and the Society of Designer Craftsmen, both charities sharing the objectives of promoting and supporting excellence in British craft. His work is sold in galleries in England and Scotland and he shows regularly at major exhibitions.

From design to conception each piece is produced to the highest levels of craftsmanship using quality materials. Penny approaches her work with enthusiasm and she has a passion for wood because of its versatility and tactile qualities. Whether working for private clients or trade it is important that their decision to commission a piece should be an exciting experience.

Visitors were impressed by the quality and variety of product on display, with the bar being raised year-on-year as Spring Fair exhibitors pulled out all the stops to inspire and define retail buying for the year ahead. Gregory Olley, director of independent contemporary furniture store Beadle & Crome, commented;

Spring Fair International 2014, an i2i Events Group exhibition, opened its doors on February 2 2014 at The NEC, Birmingham, welcoming over 66,500* retail buyers, including more than 5,250 from overseas, a 2 per cent increase on last year’s show. They came to view over 300,000 new product launches from 3,000 exhibitors across 13 different market sectors.

“We come here every year and really enjoy it, there is a very nice mix of products and suppliers, it is our favourite UK show, I can’t actually fault it. The quality has definitely gone up and up since we started coming eight years ago. We noticed from the pre-show literature that there are some really fantastic contemporary products here and we’re looking forward to seeing them on the stands. At Spring Fair you can find great suppliers who are keen to work with independent stores, there is a fantastic selection here to choose from, with a lot of cross-over buying opportunities. We find it very inspirational”.

As the largest and most important retail trade event in the country, Spring Fair serves as a crucial barometer for the economic health of the sector. What has been widely billed as the most successful show in years revealed a clear upswing in the home and gift trade, and billions of pounds worth of transactions will be carried out as a direct result of participation in the show.

Exhibitors were also happy, with Paul Hooker, commercial director of Joe Davies saying: “It’s been a fantastic show, we’ve been extremely busy every day. We have 7,500 products in our range and we launch 2,500 at Spring Fair, it’s a very important show for us. We’ve had everyone from small independent retailers to good department stores buying from us here.”

The upswing is being driven by a number of key factors, including an impressive commitment to new product development by Spring Fair exhibitors, teamed with a sharpened focus on consumer-driven trends and a clearer understanding of changing buying patterns from our nation of shopkeepers.

Speaking at the close of another successful edition of Spring Fair, managing director Louise Young commented: “There was an incredibly positive and upbeat vibe at the show this year, reflecting both the fantastic quality of product being launched and a welcome return to buoyancy in the retail trade. We saw a strong upswing in particular of Home Interiors & Furniture and Greetings & Stationery companies choosing Spring Fair as their UK showcase, and it’s great to see those market sectors performing so well after a few challenging years. The positive atmosphere on site at Spring Fair is supported by major industry research carried out by the Local Data Company on behalf of the show at the end of 2013 that shows a dramatic uplift in retail optimism.

Particularly strong product categories at this year’s show included design-led home interiors and furnishings, outdoor living items, contemporary gifts, seasonal decorations, general giftware and British-made product. Expert trend presentations from WGSN and Tom Mirabile, contributing editor for Pantone View and SVP, Global Trend & Design for Lifetime Brands, provided Spring Fair visitors with an overview of key emerging trends, as well as insights into what drives consumer spending habits and earns consumer loyalty.

Along with tens of thousands of independent retailers, senior buyers from the biggest multiples, supermarkets and department stores,

Stuart MacPherson’s Shortbread – Bringing you a taste of the Scottish Highlands!

It was only just over 2 years ago that Stuart MacPherson decided to use an old handwritten recipe that he had found in his greatgrandmother’s recipe book to produce favours for his sister’s wedding. The resulting shortbread received so much praise from the 300 guests that a number of orders were placed and the business was started in his home kitchen.

Initially, the business supplied mainly private buyers in the USA but, over the past 12 months, a number of US stores have been successfully selling the complete range of products. This now includes 7 flavours in a range of regular packs – 50g to 160g – the Standard and Special Occasion Tins – 320g – and a Variety Park of all 7 flavours. Custom orders, Christmas Specials and Favours are also available on request.

This year, it was decided to present the range of products to the UK and European markets and the Spring Fair 2014 was the event chosen to do this. Yet again, the comments on the taste, texture,

Imagerisense is dedicated to awaken I was born in the Holme Valley, Yorkshire. From a young age I was inspired to paint by the magnificent moorland countryside around me. Plan B: Retro Artwork, Bold Colours and Daring Designs!

Launched at the Spring Fair, Plan B is a new vintage and street wear inspired accessories brand currently offering various styles of bags and wallets. With bold eye catching colours we hoped we would attract buyers looking for something different and new to stand out in displays. We were right! So far the brand has had a phenomenal uptake and we are already expanding the range with new designs and products and have a very exciting year ahead.

The force behind the brand, Heather, graduated in 2013 with a degree in Maths from Glasgow University convinced when she started that Finance was the job for her. However after four years of Maths she felt her flair for creativity calling and changed track completely. Not all skills from her Maths degree have gone to waste though.

Learning to solve problems by thinking outside the box has really shone through in the ‘Plan B’ designs with the first collection being right on trend for 2014…she’s great with a calculator too!

Jewellery & Watch Birmingham - Best Selected Exhibitors Brands & Buyers Enjoy A Successful Jewellery & Watch Birmingham Jewellery & Watch Birmingham, organised by i2i Events Group, closed its doors on Thursday February 6th following five days of good business with brands and buyers reporting a high caliber and successful show that saw over 20,000 people through the doors of halls 17 and 18 at Birmingham’s NEC. Buyers from all of the UK’s major jewellery retailers and department stores including Beaverbrooks, Fraser Hart, Swag, Fenwick, John Lewis, House of Fraser and many key independents were out in force for the five day show which took place from 2-6 February.

The rebranding of the show as Jewellery & Watch Birmingham, to emphasise the importance of the watch market, was well-received by buyers and brands alike and the show’s exhibitors overwhelmingly reported a successful show spent writing lots of business.

Buyers were pleased with the quality and variety of brands exhibiting at the event, giving positive feedback on this must-attend event in the jewellery and watch buying calendar.

Sara Usher director of Jenny Jones Jewellery in Manchester commented: “We always enjoy this show and this year is the same.

We have picked up a couple of new brands and seen lots of interesting things.”

There was also a strong presence of members from the CMJ, Holden Group, BJA and NAG in attendance at the show as Jewellery & Watch Birmingham continues to grow and strengthen its relationship with these key partners and associations.

Acclaimed jewellery designer Fei Liu, who returned to exhibit for the first time since 2008, said he had a great show. “We have had lots of enquiries and I secured a great new stockist on the first day,” he said. “It was a prestigious retailer that I have been trying to reach for ages so I am really pleased.”

Ian Latham of watch brand Bering Time added: “We are having an amazing show. We are currently UK watch brand of the year and we have had lots of buyers coming to see us. I think that the economy is starting to pick up and this is definitely reflected in the mood of the show.”

Such was the success of the show that the organisers i2i Events Group have seen a big upswing in demand for exhibition places at the eagerly awaited Jewellery & Watch London show taking place in June and over 70% of exhibitors have already booked even bigger stand and promotional packages for Jewellery & Watch Birmingham 2015. Booked brands include many companies that have been doing business at the event for many years including Domino who, in 2015, will have exhibited there for 25 years and Brown & Newith who have been at the show for well over 20 years.

Commenting on the success of this year’s Jewellery & Watch Birmingham, Driscoll said: “Jewellery & Watch Birmingham surpassed all our expectations this year and there has been a fantastic response from brands and buyers who attended the show.

Pure London AW/14 - Best Selected Exhibitors BUYERS AND BRANDS PRAISE CHANGES AT REFRESHED PURE LONDON Pure London, the premium event for progressive fashion buyers, drew to a close on a high today (February 11th) as brands and buyers praised the changes made to the show this season.

Buyers from this country’s top retailers were out in force at the show with the likes of Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, House of Fraser, Fenwick, John Lewis, Atterley Road and Asos all visiting the show along with many of the UK’s top independents including Strut, Press of Primrose Hill, Coco Boutique, Sunday Best and The Dressing Room.

The reaction of the buyers and brands to the changes at Pure London implemented this season was overwhelmingly positive with the re-editing of womenswear and the re-positioning of the catwalk, back to the centre of the show, being welcomed.

Following extensive investment from parent company, i2i Events Group, Pure London worked on re-editing the show this season, re-zoning womenswear into three distinct sections; Allure, Aspire and Agenda alongside the existing Spirit and footwear and accessories areas.

As a result of these changes, the show attracted a lot of new brands many of which had never shown at Pure London before. This was especially true in Agenda, the more premium section of the show, which proved to be a big hit with buyers.

Katie Stamer-Smith buyer at Atterley Road said: “The show looks more premium downstairs than in previous seasons. This is definitely our favourite show due to the groupings of the brands and the spaciousness in the halls.”

Deryane Tadd owner of award-winning boutique The Dressing Room in St Albans added: “You can immediately feel the difference when you walk in. This season it has been a really positive experience, I love the catwalk and the new feel of the show.”

Brands exhibiting at the show for the first-time were also full of praise for Pure London this season.

Charlotte Woods sales manager for Innocenza Agency, which brought its Ilse Jacobsen, Stella Nova and Gestuz brands to the show this season, said: “There has been a wonderful selection of buyers and a steady flow, and we are extremely pleased with the position of the stand.”

Awa Malina-Stelter, co-owner of Ema ét Malina added: “The separation of the brands is a brilliant concept and the space is very good and spacious. There is a good variety of international buyers, and we would definitely recommend this show to other brands.”

Press also praised the show this season. Catherine Meimoe fashion and beauty manager at the Evening Standard said: “I love the new edit and this is, by far, one of the best tradeshows I have been to this year.”

In addition to the re-edit Pure London also strengthened its partnership with UK Trade Investment (UKTI) this season in a bid to help showcase more emerging British brands and designers at the event. As a result of this, international buyers present at the show increased this season, with countries including Japan, Australia, France, Germany, Italy and Russia all represented.

Commenting on the success of this season’s show Julie Driscoll portfolio director for Pure London at i2i Events Group said: “The reaction to Pure London this season has been phenomenal and demonstrates that we are the show for the industry and we understand what the industry needs.
