Once again, the Summer issue of The Estonian will feature the high school graduation photos that you submitted of your sons and daughters. We congratulate the Class of 2019 and wish the graduates much success as they take their next steps into adulthood.

ROB ESTES Dear Estes Team Members: These are exciting times at Estes, and I’m especially pleased about the initiatives underway that will help further shape our company’s culture. Estes’ new mission statement focuses us on providing service that allows our customers to focus on what matters most to them. One aspect of our mission statement that you’ll hear more about involves Estes’ core values or underlying principles. I’m sure you won’t be surprised that one of them involves having a family-inspired culture.

Our people are like family, and we support and inspire each other every day.

I believe that listening to each other makes a family stronger, and we’re listening to you and using your feedback to make decisions that improve the company. In fact, the entire organization is working together to strengthen our focus on employee engagement. By now, many of you have participated in meetings to review your teams’ Employee Engagement Survey results and discuss potential next steps. It’s by pulling together that we’ll make Estes an even stronger company than it is today.

Listening also helps ensure that we’re providing the best service and overall experience to our customers. As our Corporate Management Team frequently stresses, everything we do each day helps create a customer experience. And what we do to deliver a great customer experience is the most important element of our company’s success. Focused, effective employees create positive customer experiences, and everyone wins in the process.

In closing, I’d like to congratulate Estes’ 2018 Shops of the Year: Indianapolis, IN; Portland, OR; and Salt Lake City, UT. Dedicated to keeping our vehicles safe and operating effectively, our Fleet Services shops maintain high standards in multiple categories to qualify for this award, so it represents a considerable accomplishment.

We congratulate Line-haul Driver Robert Steve Beeler for his 20 years of safe driving. He’s pictured (above, right) with Dispatch Supervisor Steve Clifford.

After San Antonio, TX, Terminal Clerk Lisa Norwood experienced serious back-to-back emotional blows, her teammates — Combo Driver Kevin Kotara; Line-haul Drivers Eliseo Farias, Edward Flores, Edward Torres, and Richard Valdez; and P&D Drivers Cresencio Gonzales and John Turvin — put their Estes Spirit into action.

We also congratulate P&D Driver Roy Dunmore on his 20 years of service. He’s pictured (below, right) with Terminal Manager Barry Best.

First, Lisa had to rush to her father’s side after he suffered a stroke. But while she was away, she learned that her apartment had burned to the ground along with all of her possessions. “I was a complete basket case,” says Lisa. “And had it not been for these guys, I would still be homeless.

I cannot thank them enough!”

Williamsport, PA Reporter: Ashley Ward We hosted another successful Estes Driving School in December, and 14 students graduated (pictured below). Congratulations!

Vice President-Controller Brenda Garrett joined Estes in 1992. She originally worked in Fleet Services and Pricing before moving to Finance, and began her current role in 2017. We recently spoke with Brenda to learn more about her background as well as her viewpoint as a longtime Estes employee: The Estonian: What are your primary job responsibilities as Estes Vice President-Controller?

Brenda Garrett: I produce the financial statements each period, and I help maintain relationships with the banks Estes uses. Most of my work has to do with the general ledger. I set up and maintain both it and the chart of accounts. I also interact with departments such as Accounts Payable, Revenue Accounting, and Payroll to help them correctly post items to the ledger. My team deals with accounting for all banking transactions, which means we track all money coming in and going out of the company.

TE: What do you like best about working at Estes?

BG: It’s the people. There is an incredible group of people working here!

TE: How has the company changed since you've been here?

BG: The company's growth has been amazing. Estes was mostly in the Southeast when I started in 1992.

I remember hearing how Estes would never cross the Mississippi River. So much for that! And in the Corporate Office everyone used to know each other. Now we’ve

grown so much that I see brand-new faces each and every week.

TE: If you were to tell one individual “Thank You” for helping you become the person you are today, who would it be and what did they do?

BG: I’d choose my parents. Both have always been kind-hearted and supportive.

They pointed me in the right direction, but they also taught me to make my own decisions. I hope I make them proud.

TE: If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

BG: I’ve always wanted to learn sign language. I like the idea of connecting with those who may not be able to freely communicate with most people.

TE: What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

BG: Along with a large network of people, I assist animal rescues by transporting dogs — usually from southern shelters where they probably won’t make it out alive — to animal rescues up north. Please spay or neuter your pets. Adopt, don’t shop.

TE: How do you recharge?

BG: It’s by spending time with my husband, our sons, and our dogs. I also paint to relax, which is one of the few times I use the creative side of my brain. I get together with friends, and we pick a painting we’ve seen and try to recreate it. It’s interesting to see how different the paintings turn out — even though we’re all looking at the same subject.

Estes Express Lines has 68 stationary Fleet Services shops and three mobile shops that we categorize based on employee numbers — Large, Medium, and Small. Each year we evaluate these facilities for a place on our Shop of the Year list.

We identified the winning shops by evaluating multiple areas of production, including their quality of work. Other considerations included:

• Preventative maintenance on assigned equipment

• Internal audits of completed repairs and maintenance

• Warranty recovery

• Road call resolutions, including response times

Team Estes Needs Your Driver and Mechanic Referrals The transportation industry is experiencing a serious driver shortage. That’s why we need everyone to pull together and help us identify qualified drivers and mechanics to join our ranks. By referring candidates who get hired, you can help build Team Estes while also putting extra money in your pocket.

There are two ways to win with a driver or mechanic referral. First, you can earn up to $750 from the Driver/Mechanic Referral Bonus Program.

You get $250 at hire for your referral; $250 after six months, and $250 after one year — provided you are both still active employees at these intervals.

Navistar LT Sleeper Drivers: How to View Vehicle Information from Digital Readout

UNDER THE HOOD

The new Navistar LT Sleeper units allow you to view important information about the vehicle from the instrument panel digital readout. For example, all models will allow you to view rear axle weight readings. Others may also include features that allow you to view information like front and rear drive axle temperature, transmission oil temperature, and engine oil temperature.

Here’s a reminder about our top priorities for 2019. First, we need to improve our on-time service percentage. Do your part in keeping all shipments moving through the system to deliver them on time and in good shape. Next, let’s reduce claims through better handling, loading, and protection by using dock tools, load bars, beams, straps, wrap, rope, dunnage, air bags, and empty pallets. Let’s also control the language and accuracy of all entries on delivery receipts at the time of delivery, and correctly update the information in the system. Meanwhile, we must maximize efficiencies in everything we do.

Work at a good pace, produce a high quality product, make the most of trailer space, and plan your work to eliminate wasted time and effort.

Q4 Successes • F all — the peak season for many of our largest customers — was very busy. We persevered and provided a good transportation product into the start of 2019. You did a great job, and I thank you for your efforts.

• We’ve reduced our exception percentage from very high levels at the end of 2018 to more reasonable numbers. Exceptions are indicators of future claims, so fewer exceptions now will mean fewer claims later. Thanks for handling, loading, and delivering our customers’ products with care.

Q4 Successes • Coordinating with Sales, we improved the quality of our revenue in 2018 • We reduced our freight exceptions and improved the quality of our freight handling. There’s more work to do, but we’ve made good progress.

• We led the company with pre-appointing our inbound appointment schedules week after week. This reduces handling and speeds appointment freight to customers.

It’s never too soon to begin preparing for retirement.

That’s because careful planning now can make the difference between a comfortable retirement filled with the things you enjoy and one that’s not so rosy. Here are some 401(k) savings tips to help you achieve your retirement dreams:

• S tart saving as soon as possible. The sooner you start the better because it allows you to take advantage of the magic of compounding interest.

• L et company matching work for you. Estes will match 50 percent of every dollar you contribute up to 7 percent of your total pay. That’s literally free money!

• Vanguard recommends contributing 12 to 15 percent of your pay (including company match). If you can’t afford that much now, then work your way up to it. Every dollar you contribute toward your retirement helps.

• I f you’re getting close to retirement age, consider making catch-up contributions. There are limits on the amount you can contribute, so be sure to consult with a tax professional to ensure that your contribution falls within IRS guidelines.

Our Corporate Strategy’s Customer Perception pillar is about to receive a significant boost through a major overhaul of Estes-Express.com, our primary company website. The extensive changes will impact everything from the site’s functionality to its look and feel. Featuring a cleaner and more modern design, it will be easier to navigate and compatible with mobile devices. Our customers will also have better access to resources and data, which will lay the foundation for future enhancements to the site.

An extensive project like this requires collaboration from multiple departments and individuals across Estes.

Customer experience is the overall impression that customers form when they engage with a company in any way. For Estes, it could be anything from a phone call, the condition of our trucks on the road, or the freight’s condition at delivery, all the way to the professional dress and demeanor of our employees. Our goal in 2019 is for all customers to have a great experience with Estes.

What this means to you as an Estes team member is both simple yet incredibly important. That’s because everything you do each day helps us create a customer experience, so YOU must be GREAT every time you interact with a customer. We must handle our customers’ freight just as if they were there watching everything we do. Every time we answer the phone or an email, that customer interaction must be great.

We all know that not everything will go smoothly with every shipment in our system. But when things go wrong and a customer contacts us for help, it’s our time to shine and turn things around. In the end, that customer must have an overall positive experience.

SAFETY & R ISK MANAGEM ENT When It Comes to CBD Oil, Just Say No

There has been a lot of interest lately in cannabidiol (CBD) oil. This extract from industrial hemp, a plant within the cannabis family, is non-intoxicating and touted as the answer to several medical conditions. We have begun receiving calls from employees asking if it’s OK to use CBD oil. In response, I would like to share a cautionary tale I recently read about a driver from another company.

John Doe was a veteran New York state truck driver who lost his job after being duped into believing a Denver distributor’s claims that their CBD oil was THC-free. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the substance responsible for the psychoactive effects of hemp and marijuana. Drivers with THC in their systems are guaranteed to fail a drug test, which Mr. Doe knew.

He began taking CBD oil to treat shoulder pain from an accident earlier in the year. About a month later, he failed a random drug test and was subsequently fired. Mr. Doe had tested positive for a “marijuana metabolite” at almost double the cutoff concentration limit. He was then required to submit to additional toxicology screenings, but they also revealed unacceptable levels of THC. At the time of his firing, Mr. Doe and his wife were earning over $150,000 together as a team. He has since been unable to find a job because his dismissal resulted from a failed drug test.

Mr. Doe has filed a lawsuit against the CBD oil distributor for falsely advertising their product as THC-free. However, the manufacturer says that their CBD oil is tested multiple times during the manufacturing process and stands by their claims to be THC-free. As you can see, this story comes down to a he said, she said argument, and the case is still being decided in the New York State Court System.

When you consider taking CBD oil, please think about this story. Also, keep in mind that in January 2017, the Drug Enforcement Administration published a rule that classifies any product derived from the marijuana plant as a Schedule I controlled substance. This means that these products will result in a failed drug test. Also, Schedule I controlled substances are specifically banned by the Department of Transportation.

So, when you think about taking CBD oil, the simplest thing to remember is — DON’T! The chances of something going wrong are too high. And as always, Think Safety, Act Safely!

ONTARIO Leaders across Estes have been meeting with their teams over the last few months to share their teams’ survey results and develop action plans.

The primary way they’ve done that is by listening to employee suggestions concerning their teams’ lowest scoring items. Once managers have developed action plans, they’ll share them with their teams and provide progress updates throughout the year.

MANITOBA Late last year, SASKATCHEWAN Estes teammates participated in our first employee engagement survey. Its purpose was to help us better understand how engaged our employees are, what we’re doing well, and where we can improve.
