VERSE of the Week: earth!.”(Psalm 96:1) Memorial Day Memorial Day is our nation’s reverent remembrance of the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces, paying the ultimate sacrifice for protecting and serving the people, government, and freedom of the United States of America. The purpose of Memorial Day is therefore solemn and significant When Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day (as Memorial Day was first called) should be observed on May 30, 1868, he said: “We should guard [the soldiers’] graves with sacred vigilance. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” Now picture the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery and the soldiers of the Army’s Old Guard who keep watch before that memorial night and

“Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the day, rain or shine, in heat or cold, every day of the year. That is “sacred vigilance.” How can we Christians, as citizens of the United States, honor the memory of those who have given their lives to serve our nation? We thank God for their dedication and sacrifice. We place wreaths, flowers, or flags at their graves. By our prayers for healing, generous gifts, and loving service, we show compassion for the surviving spouses and children, parents and family, friends and loved ones who continue to grieve and feel the pain of their loss. We confess our faith in God, the resurrection of the body, and the life of the world to come. And, with the help of God, we join those in our armed forces in preserving and working for peace so that war and bloodshed may cease to the ends of the earth. – Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) David A.
