Meet Hermione Granger

Hermione Granger is an 11-year-old girl with bushy brown hair, and brown eyes. She is a first year student at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her best friends are Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. She is studious, a perfectionist, hardworking, and is usually at the top of her classes. She has excellent memory and can remember things by heart. Her hobbies include hanging out with her best friends and reading.

Hermione Granger is an only child of Rose and Hugo Granger- Weasley, who are both half-bloods.

They both work as dentists in London. They are supportive of her in regards to the wizarding world and her magical powers. Since she is far away for school, Hermione does not see her parents often except on occasion on holidays. She keeps in contact with her parents via owl post.

Hermione met her two best friends, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, on the Hogwarts Express before their first year at Hogwarts.

Hermione and Ron bicker often but they get over it fast. As the days went on, they became closer and argued less.

Hermione and Harry get along well as they have similar personalities . The three can be seen getting into trouble together often.

Growth and Development Middle childhood/ School age During this age, children start to enter the prepubescent stage.

They gain 4.5-6 pounds per year and grow 1-2 inches per year (Perry, Hockenberry, & Lowdermilk, 2014, p. 985). Hermione is growing as expected-- she is 105 lbs and 61 inches tall. Her permanent teeth has grown out except for her wisdom teeth.

Her body appearance is showing pubescent changes, where “body lines soften and round out” (Perry et al., 2014, 993).

Gross and Fine Motor Skills Hermione is at the end of the school age spectrum since she is 11 years old, so her fine motor skills are mostly developed. She is able to use a quill and writes well. She has the ability to use her hands to make potions and utilize her wand. Hermione’s gross motor skills are developing as well. She is able to walk with a strong gait.

Developmental Stages Piaget- Cognitive development: Concrete operations In this stage, children start to transition from perceptual conceptual thinking. They learn how to tell time, can process more complex information, able to see others’ perspectives and able to solve problems.

While at Hogwarts, Hermione along with Harry and Ron, try to solve mysteries that are occurring within the school. This shows her thinking beyond the surface by analyzing situations and finding the answers. She gets into arguments with Harry and Ron but by hearing their perspectives, they are able to forgive each other.

Erikson- Psychosocial Development: Industry vs. Inferiority In this stage, children achieve industry learn skills and knowledge that lets them “provide meaningful contributions to society” (ATI, 2016). They have a sense of accomplishment by having the “ability to cooperate and compete with others” (ATI, 2016).

Hermione demonstrates this by being studious in her academics. In class, she is usually the only one that raises her hand to answer questions. She has the highest grades out of all of her classmates. She feels accomplished when she does better than others in exams. She is focused in her studies because she wants to become an exceptional witch.

Kohlberg- Moral development: Conventional level In this stage, children start to develop the ability to “judge an act by the intentions that prompted it rather than just its consequences” (Perry et al., 2014, p. 989). They are able to comprehend the concept of treating others how they would like to be treated.

Hermione seems to have reached the conventional level. She thinks before she acts on anything. Her actions are made according to what she believes is right, despite the consequences of doing so. She treats her friends, elders, and even those who do not like her well. She follows along Harry and Ron as they roam around Hogwarts to solve the Sorcerer’s Stone even though they knew they could get into a lot of trouble.

Nutrition According to Mayo Clinic (2017), the daily nutritional guidelines for girls aged 9-13 include: ● ● ● ● ● ●

Calories: 1,400-2,200, depending on growth and activity level Protein: 4-6 ounces Fruits: 1.5-2 cups Vegetables: 1.5-3 cups Grains: 5-7 ounces Dairy: 3 cups

Based on these numbers, Hermione is consuming an adequate diet. She eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals that are provided by Hogwarts. She does not consume too much sugar but there are days where she indulges in sweets from the Honeydukes Sweetshop. It is important that she maintains a healthy diet because this age group is a major concern for obesity (ATI, 2016).

Feelings: Partially met- Hermione talks about her problems with her friends. Since her two best friends are boys, she does not fully disclose the full extent of her problems to them.

Family and friends: Met- Even though Hermione is away from her parents while she is at Hogwarts, she has a support system from her best friends Harry and Ron. She also goes to Ron’s family’s home during holidays, so she has a second family that welcomes her in.

Sex and sexuality: Unmet- Hermione has not started showing an interest in the opposite gender yet.

Drugs or alcohol use: Met- Hermione expresses no interest in drugs or alcohol with the exception of Butterbeer. It is a common drink in the wizarding world but has a low alcohol content.

Body image: Met- Hermione has bushy hair and rather large teeth but she never paid much attention to her appearance. She usually wears her school uniform under her clothes. Other than that, she dresses casually.

Teaching/Interventions Nutrition: Hermione’s BMI is within normal range and she is eating an appropriate diet. Sometimes she indulges in sweets so it is important for her to know her limits on sugar. She is in an age group where obesity is a big concern and it is where food habits start to form.

Interventions: - Teach Hermione healthy food guidelines from ChooseMyPlate website - Discuss the importance of not skipping meals - Be encouraged to limit her sugar intake

Physical development: Hermione is on track with her height and weight, but her body is still developing so it is crucial for her to maintain adequate diet, rest, and physical activity. Since she is going through puberty, it is also important for her to know the changes that will occur.

Interventions: - Emphasize the importance of getting 9 hours of sleep for proper rest - Provide Hermione educational materials regarding puberty so she will know expected changes - Teach Hermione the importance of engaging in one hour of physical activity a day

Social development: Hermione has two best friends Harry and Ron. She likes to excel in all aspects of her academics. She has been bullied by Draco Malfoy for her appearance.

Interventions: - Discuss the importance of engaging in appropriate and competitive play - Provide Hermione resources to manage peer pressure and bullying - Teach Hermione that she is not able to master all skills but to focus in what she can do and excel in that QSEN: QSEN states that a method to minimize risk of harm to individuals is to examine commonly used unsafe practices (2016). During a Quidditch match, Hermione sets Professor Snape’s robe on fire with her wand because she thought he was jinxing Harry’s broom.

Interventions: - Teach fire safety - Establish an evacuation plan in case of fire - Educate Hermione on safe magical practices with her wand
