As decided at the first session of the Conference of the Parties, Working Group I met under the chairmanship of Ms. Cosima Hufler (Austria) to consider agenda items 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, 6.6 and 6.8. It held 20 meetings, from 18 to 28 October 2010, and adopted its draft report (UNEP/CBD/COP/10/L.1/Add.1) at its 20th meeting, on 28 October 2010. ITEM 5.1.

INLAND WATERS BIODIVERSITY

2. Working Group I took up agenda item 5.1 at its 1st meeting, on Monday, 18 October 2010. In considering the item, the Working Group had before it notes by the Executive Secretary containing a progress report on the thematic programme of work (UNEP/CBD/COP/10/20) and the in-depth review of the programme of work on the biological diversity of inland water ecosystems (UNEP/CBD/SBSTTA/14/3). It also had before it a draft decision on inland waters biodiversity contained in the compilation of draft decisions (UNEP/CBD/COP/10/1/Add.2/Rev.1) based on SBSTTA recommendation XIV/2 on the in-depth review of the programme of work on the biological diversity of inland water ecosystems. 3. Statements were made by representatives of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (on behalf of the African Group), Egypt (on behalf of the Arab Group), the European Union and its 27 member States, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Thailand and Switzerland. A representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations also made a statement. A further statement was made by the representative of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. 4. At the conclusion of the discussion, the Chair said that, taking into account the views expressed, she would prepare a text for consideration by the Working Group. 5. At its 9th meeting, on Friday, 22 October 2010, the Working Group took up a draft decision on inland waters biodiversity, submitted by the Chair. Statements were made by the representatives of Algeria, Australia, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (on behalf of the African Group), Ecuador, the European Union and its 27 member States, Jamaica, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Peru and Turkey. A statement was also made by the representative of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. /… In order to minimize the environmental impacts of the Secretariat’s processes, and to contribute to the Secretary-General’s initiative for a C-Neutral UN, this document is printed in limited numbers.
