The Midfield Satellite Concourse With major events coming to Los Angeles like the Superbowl in 2022 and the Olympic Games in 2028, LAX is making massive improvements to alleviate congestion and make the airport experience more seamless and receptive to large crowds. The Midfield Satellite Concourse is just one piece to that puzzle. This new development will house 12 new gates at the airport, with potential to include as many as 15. The building is not directly connected to any established terminal, but passengers will access it through an underground tunnel that will begin at Tom Bradley International. There are several LAX Coastal Chamber members that are involved in the construction of this new satellite concourse. Corgan is the lead design firm for the project, and the construction is being done through a joint venture with PCL and Turner Construction. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield will be in charge of the food, beverage, and retail locations that will be going into the Midfield Satellite Concourse. Once completed, this will be a 750,000 square foot building with similar oceanic and aquatic themes that Tom Bradley already has in its design. While Tom Bradley was built to depict a wave, the new Midfield Satellite Concourse will be reminiscent of an ocean swell. The tunnel that will be connecting Tom Bradley with the new terminal will include video panels and an audio system to play music or other recordings. David Kim, senior project manager said, “The concept was the waves cresting and breaking on the beach so you have a somewhat of an under-the-water feel down below. 28 | www.laxcoastal.com
