This building is classified as a martyia, otherwise known as building to honor a martyr This building honors Saint Peter’s martyrdom and was built on the “supposed” site of it.
Symbolism
This building exhibits a central plan within a circle. This building is also incredibly symmetric It’s floor plan has radial symmetry, and is strongly influenced by the Parthenon as many other buildings were during it’s time of construction. This building contains sacred geometry. Its circular plan and radial symmetry was symbolic of the perfection and eternity, a direct allusion to God
Aesthetic
The Tempietto’s exterior has columns of the Tuscan order Inside of the building, one will find a hole in the center of the floor This hole is where Saint Peter’s cross supposedly stood. This creates a dialogue about Saint Peter, and the great impact he had on Christianity The perfection of this building further highlights his devotion to God, not only by being a follower of Christ, but by being the first Pope.
