The late nineteenth century was an age of great preachers, the greatest of whom was Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Though other preachers attracted large audiences or published collections of sermons and addresses, Spurgeon outdid them all. Although a Baptist, he remains highly influential in many Christian circles and is widely and deservedly known as “The Prince of Preachers”.
In 1865, the year after he preached the address in this leaflet, 25,000 of his published sermons were sold each week. Deeply rooted in both the Scriptures and Puritan writers, Spurgeon had a firm grasp of Christian doctrine and possessed a
remarkable ability to communicate biblical truths. Spurgeon preached the following sermon in June 1864, on behalf of the society that later became Christian Witness to Israel.
