The 2025 Toronto Prayer Breakfast coincides with Shrove Tuesday, gathers local ministry and marketplace leaders at new Don Mills venue
After celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, the Toronto Prayer Breakfast is moving to a new midtown venue, as it gathers local congregational, para-church and marketplace leaders on the morning of Tuesday, March 4.
For decades, the Toronto Prayer Breakfast has taken place on the first Tuesday of March. This year, that tradition naturally aligns with Shrove Tuesday, a day marking the beginning of the Lenten season for many Christians.
The March 4 date is significant, as this year Christians of all stripes, Evangelicals, Catholic, Orthodox and others will all celebrate Easter on the same date. (Eastern Christians often hold Easter celebrations a bit later than Western Christians, owing to
their use of the Julian Calendar.)
This year the Breakfast will feature Keynote Speaker Richard Long. Richard is the Lead for Pastoral Engagement with Ottawabased One Way Ministries, and is the author of the book ‘The City-Wide Church: Unity that God Blesses.’ Leading worship will be Canadian recording artist and songwriter Martine Kelsey, who recently opened for CeCe Winans on her Canadian tour. Pastor Donnie Persaud will lead the Prayer segment of the event.
The 2025 Toronto Prayer Breakfast is jointly sponsored by the Canadian Bible Society and The Salvation Army, along with a number of local organizations.
This year, the Breakfast will serve a plated hot meal instead of the usual buffet to
allow attendees more time for fellowship.
“The Early Church devoted themselves to teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer,” says Christian Herald Publisher Fazal Karim, Jr., who serves as Chair of the TPB. He continues, “While the Bible does not command a city-wide Prayer Breakfast, it encourages Christian leaders to gather for prayer and fellowship. That’s what this gathering is all about.”
The year 2025 marks 1,700 years since the Nicene Creed, when Christian leaders convened in 325 A.D. to define the essentials of the faith. To mark the anniversary, this year’s TPB will include the recitation of the Nicene Creed.
Cornerstone Bookshop launches new store expansion
Cornerstone Bookshop, based in the Yonge and Finch area of North York, has announced they will be adding approximately 1,000 square feet of retail space to their store, by absorbing the retail unit next door.
The store expansion is a welcome announcement for Toronto’s Christian retail sector, which has seen numerous closures in the past decade, as online platforms have increased significantly. Online services can offer extremely competitive pricing, but having a local Christian store with knowledgeable staff to guide new believers to quality Christian books and Bibles is invaluable to a community.
Cornerstone’s renovation is scheduled to begin this spring, and will create a 14foot pathway leading to the new space.
www.cornerstonebookshop.ca
The new venue, Parkview Manor, located in the Don Mills and Eglinton area, is easily accessible by both car and public transit. Organizers expect this year’s attendance to be in the same 500-550 range as previous Breakfasts, but say Parkview Manor offers room to grow the event in future years. Doors open at 6:30 a.m., with the two-hour program beginning at 7:00 a.m. Tickets are $50, and a Table of Ten costs $450. At press time, there were already more than 400 confirmed attendees, with tables booked by local congregations, denominations, ministries, schools and businesses.
To purchase tickets or a table, visit www. torontoprayerbreakfast.com before Feb 28.
Christian Service Brigade helps your church establish a dynamic outreach ministry to the boys and families in your community.
Adam and Eve were created, body and spirit, by immediate and direct acts of God. Adam’s body was formed out of the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7; Genesis 3:19), and Eve’s from Adam’s body (Genesis 2:21-22). Neither arose from an animal parentage. In a few verses, the Bible declares to be false the belief that mankind developed through an evolutionary process from an ape-like creature.
It is claimed that fossils show the increasing complexity of life through time and provide intermediate examples along the evolutionary path. A favorite among evolutionists is Australopithecus, for which Richard Leakey and a fossil named Lucy are famous. Australopithecine are supposed to be our evolutionary ancestors. However, Leakey reported to have discovered in Olduvai Gorge, below Australopithecine remains, stone tool which are normally attributed to the creative abilities of man. This means that man existed at the same time as (and before) the creature which is supposed to have been our ancestor! Evolutionists claim that the co-existence of evolutionary branches is possible, as one branch gained ascendancy the other died out. In fact, the Australopithecine are merely fossilized apes similar to bonobos (pygmy chimpanzees), which are essentially the same size.
A disconcerting aspect of the claim for the evolutionary development of man is that it is based almost entirely on fossilized bones. Evolutionists seem to forget that:
1. There are very few fossils which are
purported to be human ancestors— bone fragments from fewer than 200 distinct individuals exist. It is futile to make the grand claim of human evolution on so little ‘evidence’.
2. A tremendous variety can be found within a single species. For example, full-grown horses can be big (almost 2m tall) and small (.7m tall). We all know of the variety that can occur among dogs, yet they are all dogs. So, the fossil bones of ‘pre-hominoids’ are likely individual variants of apes.
3. The majority of an organism’s biology resides in its soft anatomy which
“In a few verses, the Bible declares to be false the belief that mankind developed through an evolutionary process ...”
is not preserved in fossils. So, it is merely guessing to suggest that the ‘prehominoid’ creatures were developing human capacities.
Yet, evolutionists take a few bones fragments and conjecture a new species and
claim them to be missing links! The missing links will always be missing because there are no pre-hominoid ancestors to man. Despite this, the textbooks and the popular media continue to spout the same nonsense about man’s supposed ancestors with blaring headlines—note an example, “Homo Naledi, New Species in Human Lineage, Is Found in South African Cave” (New York Times, 2015-09-10).
Scientists steeped in the evolutionary paradigm attribute all human attitudes and preferences to evolutionary forces. They claim that man responds to inputs from his environment in a computer-like fashion or instinctively like an animal. For example, they claim that girls’ preference for pink is a result of early hominoid foraging patterns and that we find poetry beautiful because it stimulates certain parts of our brain. The silliness is obvious to anyone not wedded to the religion of Darwinism.
These claims have no resemblance to the reality in which human causation is more than passive responses to material stimuli, and they are supported by no empirical evidence which considers the complexity of man—man made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27), the highest order among all creatures; man, who is sin-stained but is still the most magnificent creature that came from the hand of God.

Last September, the historic Fourth Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization (L4) gathered 5,394 on-site delegates from 200 countries in South Korea, along with over 2,000 virtual delegates and more than 2,000 congress team members. Among them were over 185 on-site Canadian delegates and 140 online, spanning the "4 As" sectors: Academy (Theological and Educational), Assembly (Local Church Communities), Agency (Missions Organizations and Networks), and Agora (Marketplace, Workplace and Public Spaces).
Bringing together diverse voices from around the world, L4 focused on urgent gaps and opportunities in global mission. The congress created space for Canadian leaders to connect locally, regionally, and globally through collaborative sessions and canvases, exploring ways to release nextgeneration leadership, engage digitally, and strengthen intercultural collaboration.
by Bosco Tung and Joel Zantingh
A key culmination of L4 was the signing of the Collaborative Action Commitment (CAC), a pledge to strengthen partnerships, remove barriers, and mobilize every Christian—whether pastor, homemaker, educator, missionary, or marketplace professional—into God’s mission today. Many Canadian delegates affirmed that meaningful partnerships and collaborations across denominations and cultures are essential for the whole church effectively declaring and displaying Christ, together.
To build on the energy from L4, you’re invited to Mission Conference 2025: Living God’s Story, Serving God’s Mission on Saturday, March 29 at Light Presbyterian Church (6965 Professional Court, Mississauga). Rev. Dr. Christopher Wright will deliver three keynote addresses, and several
L4 delegates will be leading practical breakout sessions. Early Bird registration is $20 (includes lunch) until February 23, then $30 until March 23, and $20 at the door (no lunch).

Heaven is calling us collectively to our knees. How will we
This month’s issue is a bit smaller than usual, owing to my work on several other projects, including the 2025 Toronto Prayer Breakfast. After 30 years, I’m happy that publishing Christian Herald is still my mainstay, but every now and then I feel led by the Spirit to assist in other areas of ministry, and those calls have to be answered. The paper will be back to our regular size very soon.
More and more, we see the world navigating turbulent times, with people chained to the news cycle trying to decipher what exactly is going on. It’s in these times that Christians have an open door with their neighbours to share God’s peace, and influence their neighbourhoods and communities for Christ.
We seek a revival of Christian faith and values in our country, but revivals are most often borne out of a season of intense and unified prayer. Are we willing to join together and pray for our cities, provinces and

country? As one of the parties responsible for publicizing Christian events in the GTA, I have to say, we don’t seem to get a lot of event listings for city-wide prayer meetings that cross denominational lines.
But perhaps this is changing. The clarion call to prayer right now is deafening. We are about to enter a season of pre-Easter prayer and fasting (whether or not you formally call it ‘Lent’ is irrelevant. Everyone prepares their heart for Easter.) This year, all Christian traditions--Evangelicals, Mainline Protestants, Orthodox and Catholics--will commemorate Easter on the same date.
This is hardly unheard of, as the dates do line up every now and then. But then we have other prayer campaigns overlapping here as well. The annual 40 Days for Life, the prayer campaign to end abortion, overlaps with Lent this year. As does the an-

nual Prayer for the Muslim World initiative. PrayON, a campaign to pray for Ontario political leaders, has had to fire up their prayer campaign because of the early election call in the province.
Just after Easter, Ignite Prayer Toronto will take place, with a mandate to try to raise up 1,000 Houses of Prayer across Canada. Ignite Prayer is supported by numerous top-tier Christian ministries, including the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Alpha Canada, and more.
It feels like Heaven is intent on calling us collectively to our knees, perhaps in preparation for something that is coming.
The question is, how will we answer?
As Canadians struggle to manage the chaos around the world - whether it’s emanates from here at home, America, China, Ukraine, the Middle East or elsewhere - Christians need to be ready to provide answers. I know we’re already engaged, with food banks fighting hunger; divorce, grief and addiction recovery ministries; crisis pregnancy outreaches; child welfare helps, and dozens of other good projects.
But when the Spirit is unmistakably calling us as the Body of Christ into a special season of prayer, it’s important to answer. Even if that means setting ‘normal’ aside for a while and seeking the face of the Lord.
2084 and the AI Revolution, Updated and Expanded Edition: How Artificial Intelligence Informs Our Future
By John C. Lennox Zondervan

Mathematician and philosopher John Lennox believes that there are credible responses to the daunting questions that AI poses, and he shows that Christianity has some very serious, sensible, evidence-based things to say about the nature of our quest for superintelligence. This newly updated and expanded edition of 2084 will introduce you to a kaleidoscope of ideas:
• Key recent developments in techno-
logical enhancement, bioengineering, and, in particular, artificial intelligence.
• Consideration of the nature of AI systems with insights from neuroscience.
• The way AI is changing how we communicate, implications for medicine, manufacturing and the military, its use in advertising and automobiles, and education and the future of work.
• How data is used today for surveillance, thought control.
• The rise of virtual reality and the metaverse.
• The transhumanist agenda and longtermism.
• The agreements and disagreements that scientists and experts have about the future of AI.

Out of Hiding to Live as Your God-Given Essential Self
By Dr. Merry C. Lin Baker Books, 208 pages, Softcover
Finding our true selves has become the call of authentic living. But this is where we can get it wrong and inadvertently pursue the wrong things. Living out of our true selves isn't just about becoming--it's about unbecoming all the things we believed we had to be to be loved and rebecoming our God-given essential selves.
In this practical book, clinical psychologist Dr. Merry C. Lin guides you through a self-discovery process toward life-changing, daily transformation. Lin is the executive director of the Toronto-based Dr. Lin & Associates.

SEAFORD, Del. (BP) – Grace Baptist
Church Senior Pastor Larry Davis doesn’t believe you can be like Jesus unless you help the poor among us. “Even though He said we’d always have them, He didn’t say not to help them,” Davis said.
For the past four years, Grace Baptist Church in Seaford has housed homeless women during the winter in cooperation with Love INC.’s (In the Name of Christ) Code Purple outreach, sharing hospitality, the Gospel and agape love as the women accept invitations to Bible study, worship and fellowship.
On SuperBowl Sunday, Davis will baptize four women housed at Grace Baptist, where between five and 15 women seek shelter on any given night, he said. Statewide, homelessness in Delaware has increased 58 percent since 2020, according to the annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, numbering 1,358 one January night in 2024 in the state with a population of 1.1 million people.
Davis has linked Grace Baptist with Robert Craig Films and the upcoming theatrical release of “No Address,” a feature film aimed at spurring outreaches to house the homeless who numbered 771,480 nationwide in 2024 PIT counts, the Department of Housing and Urban Development reported in December 2024.
No Address will give half of its net profits – from the film, a companion documentary “Americans With No Address” already streaming on several platforms, the novel “No Address” including an audiobook, a study guide and a soundtrack – to churches and other nonprofits involved in helping the homeless who register on the film’s website and pass vetting, Robert Craig Films CEO Jennifer Stolo told Baptist Press.
“For us, it’s important that we give back 50 percent of the net profits back to these organizations that we’ve partnered with across the county,” she said, “because they’re doing the real work and we just want to honor them.
“Our plea is just tell as many people as possible to go to the movie. The more people that go to the movie, the more that
by Diana Chandler
we can give back.”
Once the churches receive the funding, she said, “we just know that we’ve identified more than 1,200 nonprofits – churches and organizations – that are doing amazing work. And so whatever we’re able to give back to them, we just know that they will do good work with their homeless ministries.”
[Churches may apply for the grants at www. noaddressmovie.com/the-big-5-giveback.]
“This isn’t just a movie,” Stolo said. “This is a movement.”
Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Ashanti joins the cast that includes Emmy Award winner Ty Pennington, Beverly D’Angelo, Lucas Jade Zumann, William Baldwin and Xander Berkeley, among others in the film slated to run Feb. 27-March 5 in theaters nationwide.
Inspired by true events, the film follows individuals who experience homelessness for a diversity of reasons, based on a screenplay that has won dozens of awards at regional and local film festivals the past few years, Stolo said.
Robert Craig Films hopes to call people to action in the fight against homelessness.
“If we leave the theatre unchanged,”
she said, “we’ve missed the point. And so, that’s not our goal. The hope is that this film inspires people to see the homeless not as a problem to fix, but as people to love.
“And I think so often there are just so many stereotypes. And we really want to break the stereotype of homelessness,” she said. “The reality is many people experiencing homelessness are veterans, many of them are families. We see a rise in seniors now in homeless shelters.”
While the 2024 PIT count for the those who were homeless on Jan. 24 yielded 771,480, Robert Craig Films promotes the number of 2.8 million homeless in the U.S., half of them children. Stolo and other representatives gathered the number in research that included visiting cities with the largest homeless populations and meeting with leading agencies addressing the problem.
“The numbers are staggering,” she said. “It’s not the stories we think they are when we walk by someone on a corner. Many of them never thought they’d end up on the streets.”
In Seaford, Davis is supporting the film in hopes that the truth of homelessness will inspire compassion and ministry among churches nationwide.
“If someone is blessed enough to work with this population,” he said, “they will quickly realize that there’s many people that landed in a situation of homelessness and it could have been them. It’s the loss of a job, not being able to find a job, going through a divorce or a bad family situation or a situation of abuse” with no other family nearby to help.
Davis is excited for those he will baptize Sunday at Grace Baptist.
“They laugh a lot,” Davis said of the women. “They’ve grown spiritually. They all now have a study Bible the church has given them. I joked with a friend recently that Seaford will have the most biblically educated homeless population in the country.
“These people will know the Bible and they will be able to share the Gospel on the streets or whatever situation they find themselves in.”

Angel Studios has added The King of Kings to its 2025 slate, releasing on April 11, 2025 exclusively in theaters, just in time for Holy Week and Easter. Inspired by a Charles Dickens’ short story, the film is created by South Korea’s Mofac Animation and is the directorial debut by Seong-ho Jang .
The King of Kings stars top-tier Hollywood voice talent including Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley.
In today’s corporate business world, ‘what’s in it for me’ dominates many conversations involving change. Yet, the Bible teaches us servant leadership, opposing this self-centred ‘me first’ attitude, is what we need to learn. Taking care of others as our focus will help us to become a light shining in a dark place.
What is encouragement? Amy Vezina tells us that it’s impacting someone, to give them support and hope in what they want to achieve. It’s not always positive. Sometimes it simply provides a new perspective on a decision or situation. It requires stepping outside one’s comfort zone.
While it’s sometimes speaking positive uplifting words, encouragement also includes a commitment to read God’s Word, lead with integrity, ignite hope, and at times it means helping someone see things through a spiritually discerned set of new lenses.
As a twenty-year-old, Amy recalls working at a restaurant and serving a couple who built Friday date night into their schedule. But their window of time was always tight--merely one hour. Amy noted that they always ordered the same drinks and meal, so she began to get their order placed ahead of time, so that it was ready upon their arrival.
One day they noticed her engagement ring, and that led to a conversation about
by Nancy Kingdon
her future career and marriage plans. Amy learned that the lady was CEO at a large insurance firm. When she handed Amy her business card and invited her to apply for an upcoming job opening, leadership doors opened that resulted in a job, and within six months a promotion to a higher management level.
Feeling blessed, Amy talks about “paying it forward”. Now she consciously tries to encourage those she works with or supervises, always looking for ways to help them flourish as leaders, better equipped to serve others in their circles of influence.
That gift of having others to serve is one of the greatest benefits of being an encourager. In Amy’s life she is currently experiencing this blessing through being a facilitator for a CCBF ‘BIZ group’ in the Waterloo area and a leader for ‘Bright Believers’.
Another benefit is the expanded capac-

ity to trust God, and experience a confidence that God is always in control. For example, during COVID days, Amy recalls how so many around her seemed filled with fear and trepidation.
But she was told ‘there’s something different about you!’ That difference, she realized, was her faith and dependence on God. She believed God was in control, and trusted Him, which caused her to not feel afraid. Somehow that set her apart from many around her.
Amy’s two book recommendations are: Ed Mylett’s The Power of One More, plus a soon-to-be-released book by her mentor Richard Magnussen, entitled Go Big.
Amy’s offer of practical advice on this concept of encouragement is two-fold. First, focus on the Bible and what it teaches us. Did you know that the Bible is a love letter from God to each one of us? If I got a love letter from that special one I love most, I’d memorize it! God’s Word not only teaches us to know God better, it brings delight into our soul, as we increase our trust in Jesus, and grasp the depth of His love for us.
Secondly, find a mentor. Mentorship is highly under-rated. We need someone mentoring us and as business leaders, we need to become mentors, too. When times of discouragement come, as they no doubt will, it is of great value to have someone who cares enough about us to pray for and
with us, strengthening us with hope and encouragement that is biblical, and Christfocused.
• God strengthens us. Amy shares the life verse she chose for her baptism, which is: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 NIV
• You are not alone. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV
• Hope brings joy and peace. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 NIV

Cheers, it’s 2025! You’ve entered onequarter of the way into the 21st century. How do you feel about the problems and possibilities ahead? I feel a bit nervous but excited. And, I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore. I evaluate the past year in December and make intentions for the coming year. Yes, I intend to eat better, exercise more, and be more patient! During my daily routine, I sat secluded in my home office around 5:30 a.m. with my Bible, journal, and Yeti mug steaming with Jehovah Java. Surfaced from a warmed soul, here’s what I intend for 2025: to form and fuel my life and leadership with the Lord’s Prayer. I launched the New Year with one request, “Lord, teach me to pray” (Luke 11:1).
Lord, Teach Us to Pray
As a Spirit-ual leader, Jesus led with prayer. “Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples’” (Luke 11:1). Remarkably, the sole item the disciples asked of Jesus was for him to teach them to pray. Do we learn to pray from our theological schools and churches? Fred Hartley asks, When Jesus built His church, He built a praying church. What kind of church are you building? When Jesus made disciples, He made praying disciples. What kind of disciples are you making? Jesus announced, “My house shall be called a house of prayer [not preaching]”—the residence of God’s presence. Too many churches are houses of singing and sermons but not prayer. We
by Roger Helland
approach and access his presence by prayer.
Matthew 6:9-13 contains a longer version of The Lord’s Prayer. Here’s Luke’s shorter version of what Jesus taught,
2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread, 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
(Luke 11:2–4, ESV)
We can and do recite the Lord’s Prayer verbatim, particularly Matthew’s version. However, its words serve more as a model with a clear structure and themes depicting the kind of prayer and focus for a life of prayer. What Jesus modelled, his followers asked, and Jesus taught unveiled a central discipleship practice for us—Kingdom prayer.
Kingdom Prayer
God-focused private and public Kingdom prayer fuels Spirit-ual life and leadership. Don’t begin your prayer with a finite focus on us armed with a shopping list of requests. Begin with an infinite focus on the Father and his name. We tend to first look inward with a human focus. We often mutter comforting, venting, or wishful prayers devoid of faith, fervour, and Scripture and expect
ence—his kingdom come through his rule and reign without rival as King—in my life and the world. God’s Kingdom arrives wherever the King is present with heaven’s life-giving characteristics released on earth. In heaven, there’s no sin or sickness, division or death. Heaven radiates shalom—peace, wholeness, well-being.
Paul wrote, “The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 14:14). Jesus taught, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. . . how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who [continually] ask him!” (Luke 11:9, 13). I’ll pray for the Holy Spirit regularly.
nothing to change (Jon Tyson of Church of the City, NYC). Theologian Augustine taught the essence of sin is incurvatus in se—a Latin phrase for “curved inward on oneself.” It describes a gravitational turning inward on self rather than outward on God and others. Listen to the prayers we often pray, curved inward on ourselves. Kingdom prayer starts outward with God and then moves inward with us.
To “hallow” his name is to treat God as holy and revered. God’s name reflects his magnificent identity, reputation, character, and capacity. Let’s pray, “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” (Psa. 34:3). In 2025, I intend to praise God my Father, housed in heaven, radiant with stellar perfection and power. I resolve to honour his lofty name first—his colossal person and reputation—as holy. And pursue holiness like a hound after a hare, so I’ll walk in a manner worthy of the Lord as his image-bearer (Heb. 12:14; Eph. 4:1; 2 Cor. 3:18). God’s holiness and name are elegant.
I intend to pray for God’s manifest pres-
“Too many churches are houses of singing and sermons but not prayer.”
My posture will be open arms and upraised hands—in magnificent surrender. I’ll pray for a raging river of renewal to flood the church and revival in Canada. I’ll pray for God’s dominion to invade Congress and Trump, the House of Commons and Trudeau. I’ll pray for God to end the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars. And, through fervent and unceasing prayer, I’ll “seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually (Psa. 105:4).
In 2025, I intend to dive deeper into devotion to Kingdom prayer. I’ll cover another section of the Lord’s Prayer in the next article.
